Mundy’s Mill High School
Advisory Committee Minutes
Name of Committee: Career Technical Agricultural Education Department
School Year: 2015-2016 Date: October 22, 2015
Recorder: Laura Kinchen
Introductions:
Mr. Griffin called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.
Introductions of both the CTAE teachers and the advisory committee
members took place.
1.0 Role and Responsibility of Advisory Council Members
Mr. Griffin discussed the role and responsibilities of the Advisory Council
Members. We reviewed the CCPS Advisory Committee Fact Sheet.
We discussed and reviewed the mission statement, short terms goals and
long term goals. We asked the members to provide us with feedback and
suggestions in regards to the mission statement and goals. All members
were in agreeance with the mission statement and goals.
2.0 CTAE/CTSO at MMHS
Kelsey Chanthraboutda and Jasmine Cambridge gave the FBLA
Presentation.
Jennifer Rodriguez gave the DECA Presentation
Ms. Kinchen discussed the BCS and FBLA updates. We teach cross
curricular with FBLA so students learn skills in classroom and are able to
compete at RLC, SLC, and NLC. The competitions help students see the
real world experiences and focus on social skills, soft skills, presentations
skills, etc. in preparation for the events.
Some the community service activities that FBLA participates in: item
drive for families in need, making cards for nursing home residents, faculty
appreciation, Pick an Elf.
BCS now offers 3 pathways for students 1 business and 2 IT. She
discussed the EOPA’s for each pathway and how the credentials for
passing these tests can be used for students looking for jobs.
Mr. Dobbins and Mr. Cliett discussed their individual IT pathways. Mr.
Dobbins talked about the EOPA for his 3rd level course which will make his
students more marketable and competitive in the global market.
3.0 Resources and Opportunities for MMHS CTAE Students
Ms. Bradwell stressed that the purpose of the advisory committee is to
collaboratively work together. It’s not just a meeting and then we leave.
We need the council members to be actively involved in our school to
become part of MMHS to help our students. Also to provide opportunities
for our students.
The involvement needs to be active and ongoing; we want by-in into our
school and our students
We stated that we desperately need opportunities for students to job
shadow to truly see what jobs involve before they make career decisions;
in real life situations.
Advisory council members need to spread the word to other companies
and other people in their office about providing jobs, internships, and job
shadowing opportunities for our students.
Mrs. Bradwell also discussed Bill 766 which replaced the old youth
apprenticeship bill. Now students need to earn 750 hrs instead of 2000+
and the students no longer have to be paid in the apprenticeship.
Mrs. Bradwell also discussed house bill 402 which is currently in the
works. It gives companies worker compensation for employees who are
16+ years old instead of 18+.
Next year WBL will be a major part of CCRPI; no longer will it earn school
‘extra credit points’ it will be mandatory. Students will have to either
participate in WBL pathway or complete a capstone project; WBL will be
much easier for our students.
There are currently 69 students in WBL. We can lose K-Weight funding
because we are not in the guidelines; we are over the limit from where we
should be.
The Governor has a task force called High Demand Career Initiative. He
has companies go around to schools to see the skills needed to fill the
jobs we have available in Georgia. Georgia currently has a shortage of
skilled employees because employees are lacking the skills needed to
meet the needs of the job so instead of hiring Georgia residents they are
having to look for employees outside of Georgia. The Governor wants the
residents to have the skills needed where Georgians can fill the jobs. He
sent out a survey to businesses and industries asking what skills and
positions were need. There were 165 companies that responded and the
biggest need were in: mechanical engineering, IT, Software
Development, Programming, and Business. The main skills needed
based on the results were: soft skills, work ethics, project management,
problem solving, and teamwork.
4.0 Industry Certification
Mr. Dobbins informed the committee that we are currently going through
Industry Certification and explained IC. He stated that SHRM & the DOE
set the standards and will evaluate us based on those standards. He
provided the committee with the website we are using to post our
documentation and mentioned that Mrs. Kinchen is the chair. He stressed
the importance of the advisory committee involvement based on Standard
3.
Mrs. Kinchen discussed the importance of the advisory committee during
Industry Certification and provided the committee members with the April
28, 2016 date for our final visit. She told the committee that throughout
the year they would need to be involved and will be expected to discuss
their involvement with the BCS/FBLA programs during the final visit.
5.0 Advisory Committee Feedback/Suggestions
Jasmine Cambridge suggested that we use Google Drive or Apple
Calendar as a committee to share dates/ideas easier.
The suggestion was made by Chuck Thomas and Jasmine
Cambridge to have a workshop for students where
industry/business representatives come in and teach soft skills and
provide hands-on training for students. They need to learn about
POS system and customer service prior to starting a job.
Mr. Thomas stated that kids are losing the ability to communicate.
They would rather text than pick up the phone and have a real
conversation. Because of this, they can’t talk/express themselves
in interviews. He stated that mock interviews would be a good idea
to help students become more confident and comfortable when
speaking.
Mrs. Griffin stated that students need to research the
company/business prior to going in for an interview. That way
when the potential employer asks questions the student will be able
to respond. They need to prepare for the interview and not just
show up.
Mrs. Adamason suggested we send out a survey to see what time
works best for all industry/business representatives so maybe we
will have more people show up.
Kelsey Chanthraboutda suggested we have resume and cover
letter workshops during an early release/advisement day. That way
we can reach the entire student body and not just CTAE students.
Mrs. Canty suggest that we work with English classes to identify
students that truly want/need to learn about certain skills/topics
related to work and pull them out as needed to provide them with
that help. That way even if they don’t have a CTAE class where
this is taught they can receive help.
Mr. Davis stated that if the career development could start in middle
school it would have a great impact on students. That way when
they enter high school instead of just starting the process we can
continue from middle school.
Mrs. Adamson asked if our software is up to date and if we needed
any other supplies
Mrs. Adamson also asked why MMHS only has 3 programs where
most other high schools have 5. We stated that several programs
we used to have were closed/done away with (Ag Science,
Automotive, and Healthcare)
Mr. Davis said that we need to bring more people in the school to
show our kids that people want to be involved. Our kids need to
see professionals to see who/what to achieve towards
6.0 Schedule date and development of agenda for next meeting
Next meeting date is February 26th at 5:00 p.m.
We will further discuss the MOS Certifications and EOPA’s
Meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m. by Mrs. Kinchen
