N2 Bashlin Harness Sizing & Video

FALL PROTECTION Bashlin Harness Sizing
& RESCUE
Harness ANSI ASTM Requirements - Bashlin’s harnesses meet
or exceed the ANSI and ASTM requirements for Fall Protection.
This includes the proposed ASTM revision of the F887 standard
specifying the minimum requirements for resistance to electric
arc. The standard 10,000 pound test nylon webbing used in
Bashlin Harnesses will endure an ARC flash of 50 cal/cm2, and
the harness will still pass the drop test outlined in the ASTM
specification. For complete information, including test reports,
contact your American Safety representative.

Sizing Bashlin Harnesses - The Bashlin harness is sized
according to the torso of the individual. This involves measuring
the height and the chest, then finding the correct size on the
chart, according to the style of the harness. Height is the first
consideration. However, if the chest measurement is too large for
the corresponding height, move to the larger size. If the chest
measurement is too small for the corresponding height, choose
the size dictated by the height.

Harness sizing chart by style.

E. I. Harnesses
F. • Read, understand, and follow all of the instructions included with the
harness or affixed to the harness prior to use. Do not use equipment
J. without proper training. (B)
• Check all buckles and closures for correct alignment, and that pass
G. through buckles are mated properly. Tuck excess webbing into the elastic
bands on the harness. This reduces the possibility of hooking the material
www.americansafety.com on an object, causing an accident. (C)
• The harness must be sized properly to perform correctly. Refer to the
sizing instructions. Do not use an improperly sized harness. (D)
• The harness back attachment is to be positioned between the shoulder
blades for peak performance during an arrested fall. Correct positioning
of the back attachment will also keep the straps from falling off the
shoulders during normal weather. (E)
• Wear the harness tight. It must be tight enough that the buckles hold
the material properly and will not disengage accidentally. A loose
harness is hazardous, and may not perform properly to arrest a fall.
• Avoid exposing the harness to substances or environments, such
as petroleum products, excessive heat, or prolonged sunlight that
will degrade the material or cause the friction buckles to slip.
• Nylon webbing melts at 400 degrees Fahrenheit and will begin to
degrade at lower temperatures. Remember this when working around
heat. Any nylon harness exposed to damaging heat must be removed
from service. (F)
• A harness storage bag, Bashlin #10HB or #10BM, will protect the
harness from most mechanical or chemical damage, and prolong the
life of the harness. (G)
• Altering this harness in any way voids the manufacturer’s warranty.
• The average useful life of a full body harness is 2 years from the
in service date or 3 years from the date of manufacture, which ever
comes first.
Inspecting Your Bashlin Harness
This harness must be inspected prior to every use. Remove this
harness from service if you notice any of the following:
1. Safety hardware which has electrical burns, cracks, or deformities.
2. Strength members which are worn, cut, abraded, or have suffered

chemical or thermal degradation. (H)
3. Sewing or splices which are torn, cut, or have broken stitches. (I)
Maintaining Your Bashlin Harness
Caring for this harness is easy and will take very little time. Please
observe the following instructions for best results:
• (J) Cleaning should be done with a mild soap and water. We suggest
placing the harness in a mesh bag (Bashlin #10HBM) and then in a clothes
washer on a gentle cycle, or you may simply hand wash with soap and
water. Never use a petroleum-based cleaner, as it will degrade the nylon.
Dry the harness by hanging; do not place in a clothes dryer.
• (G) Storage should be away from the sun, but with enough ventilation so
that the nylon does not mold or mildew. Do not store close to heat which
will dry the nylon.

N8 Lanyard & Anchorage Tips

FALL PROTECTION 1. Lanyard & Anchorage Tips
& RESCUE 2.
Tips For Use, Inspection, Care, and Maintenance of Lanyard,
2. 4. Anchorages
3.
6. • Read, understand, and follow all the instructions included with or affixed
5. 9. to the lanyards and anchorages prior to use. Do not use this equipment
8. 10. without proper training. (1)
7.
• Never punch holes in woven nylon material.

• Verify that the connector on the end of the lanyard is proper for
attachment to the harness or anchorage.(2)

• The average useful life of Bashlin anchorages and lanyards made of
synthetic material is 2 years from the service date or 3 years from the
date of manufacture, whichever comes first.

Lanyards
• Do not lay or drag lanyards on the ground. This is a proven method of

exposing the product to mechanical or chemical damage.

• Never connect 2 lanyards together to make a longer lanyard. (3)

• Carry an attached lanyard either on the shoulder, or in some other
manner that will keep it out of the way, and not be a tripping hazard when
walking or climbing.

• Never put knots in rope or webbing lanyards as this will decrease the
strength by as much as 30%. However, looping lanyards and harnesses
is an approved method of lanyard attachment as long as it is done per
Bashlin instructions. (4)

• Never connect a lanyard snaphook into web loop, directly onto a
horizontal lifeline, or around an anchor and back onto itself. (5)

• Never attach more than one lanyard to a “D” or “O” ring.

• If a lanyard is to be connected directly to a web loop, use a locking
carabiner designed for that purpose. (6)

Anchorages
• Select an anchor point that provides adequate strength per OSHA

requirements and will limit the pendulum motion and free fall distance.
The ideal point is directly overhead and positioned to limit the free fall to
2 feet or less.

• The location of the anchorage must not allow contact by the worker to a
lower level, or the ground during an arrested fall.

• Do not use nylon web anchor slings around structures with sharp edges
unless provisions are made to keep the edge from cutting the sling. (7)

Inspecting Lanyards and Anchorages
These products must be inspected prior to every use. Remove them from
service if you notice any of the following:

1. Safety hardware which has electrical burns, cracks, or deformities.
Snaphooks must operate easily and smoothly. They close
completely and lock. (8)

2. Strength members which are worn, cut, abraded, or have suffered
chemical degradation. (9)

3. Sewing or splices which are torn, cut, or have broken stitches. (10)

Care of Lanyards, Nylon Anchorages
Cleaning - Any cleaning is done with mild soap and water. We
suggest placing the lanyard in a mesh bag (Bashlin #10HBM), then, in a
clothes washer on the gentle cycle, or you may simply hand wash with
soap and water. Never use petroleum-based cleaners, as they will degrade
the nylon. Dry the lanyard by hanging, but do not place in a clothes dryer.

Storage - Store in a pouch or compartment away from the sun. Do not
store close to heat, as it will dry the nylon and degrade the material.

N14 FALL PROTECTION & RESCUE

Lifehook® Fall Protection Systems

FALL PROTECTION A. The L-Series Lifehook® anchor is a key component of a
& RESCUE personal fall arrest system for training unqualified pole climbing
apprentices. These devices are pole-top mounted anchors that
have a 360° rotating davit. Full circumference mobility provides
complete fall protection to the climber as they move up, down, and
completely around the utility pole.

A. The lightweight L55 davit rotates quickly and predictably to remain
B. aligned above the climber to prevent a dangerous swing fall.
The SRL attachment point on the L55 is offset several additional
inches over competing products. This assures the line remains
behind the climber’s center of gravity and safely distances their
body from impact with the pole. The open, low-profile davit design
is also less susceptible to prevailing winds.

The installation bracket of the L55 has been designed to reinforce
the upper section of the utility pole. Under repeat fall arrest force,
Lifehook® products will not require ongoing adjustments to remain
level. There are two standard bracket sizes to choose from, and
custom size brackets are available by special order.

Tested Minimum Strength: 5,500 lbs.
Mounting Location: Top of Pole

B. The Lifehook® FB-Series anchor is a key component of a
personal fall arrest system for training unqualified pole climbing
apprentices. The heavy-duty FB6 is the second generation of
our original patented design. The Lifehook® FB6 features a 250°
rotating davit to provide compliant fall protection to the climber as
they move up, down, or around a 2/3 range of pole.
This anchor is unique in that it can be easily installed at any height
on a utility pole with a span between six and nine inches. The
main mounting bracket features a provision to prevent the bracket
from shifting side to side on the pole when under load. The
main bracket and davit of the anchor are furnished permanently
assembled for safety and strength.

The FB6 davit rotates rapidly, smoothly and predictably with
rated bearings on a solid axle of high tensile steel. Specific high
grade materials used in the construction of the FB6 assures
longevity and durability to rival competing products. The main
safety advantage of our design provides Lifehook® products with
a better ability to follow and remain above the climber to prevent a
dangerous swing fall.

The FB6 can also be used in tandem with another Lifehook®
system for applications where two climbers (instructor and trainee)
must be on the same pole. This is a safer alternative to competing
two-man systems whose climbers must share the same axis of
rotation where the movement of one climber can negatively affect
the other climber. Using Lifehook® systems in tandem
succeeds at meeting minimum strength requirements for
two attached workers while providing each climber with
an independently rotating davit.

Tested Minimum Strength: 5,500 lbs.
