CLIMBING EQUIPMENT“D” Size Ordering Bashlin Belts
M4 Bashlin Belts Sizing:
Proper sizing is one of the most important considerations in the
1. purchase of a lineman’s tool belt. An improperly sized belt is
2. uncomfortable and may cause an accident or injury.
3. Bashlin tool belts are measured by the ”D” size, which is the
distance between the heels of the D-rings.
www.americansafety.com
All Lineman’s tool belts must be ordered according to the “D”
size.
To Find Your “D” Size:
1. Locate the point where the heel of the “D” ring should rest. As
the photo illustrates, this is approximately 4” down from the top of
the hip bone.
2. Begin to measure from this point. Measure around the buttocks
to the same point on the opposite side.
3. When a properly sized tool belt is worn, the “D” rings will point
nearly straight ahead and the tongue adjustment will be in the
center holes. The tongue buckle section is sized in relation to the
“D” measurement. There are normally nine holes in the tongue, 1”
apart, allowing 8” of adjustment.
To properly size the Padded Rest-A-Back or Hip-Grip tool
belts, add 2” to your standard “D” measurement.

CLIMBING EQUIPMENT
M18 Bashlin Gaff Inspection & Maintenance
Inspection & Maintenance
To get the best climbing performance from your Bashlin climbers,
the gaffs must be sharp, with the correct shape and dimensions.
Improperly maintained gaffs can cause cutouts, accidents or injury.
Here are the basic techniques of correct gaff maintenance:
1. 2.
A. Sharpening Bashlin Gaffs
E.
B. Place the climbers in a vise as pictured. Wood blocks are used
C. to protect the shank. The bottom of the gaff is up and exposed,
making it easy to file and make the proper cuts. The goal of
D. correct sharpening is to hone the 2 edges on the underside of the
F. gaff as indicated (1), all the while maintaining the “chisel point” on
the tip of the gaff. (2)
G.
A. Hold the 6” mill bastard file with both hands. Lay the file on the heel of
www.americansafety.com the gaff and draw it forward in a flat level cut. Follow the shape of the
gaff over the tip, maintaining the chisel point.
B. Finish by making similar strokes with a sharpening stone.
Using the Bashlin No. 5 Gaff Gauge to determine the shape
and dimension of a Gaff.
Bashlin’s Gaff Gauge is the only tool that can be used to
accurately measure Bashlin Gaffs. By using it, the user can
measure the length, width and thickness of all 12,14 and 16 series
pole gaffs. This gauge is only to be used on the 1-5/8” number 14
pole gaff.
It will not correctly measure the 2-1/2” tree gaffs.
C. Length - Place the gauge under the gaff as indicated by (C). It will
measure correctly from either side of the gauge. The tip should
rest beyond the last line indicating a length in excess of 1-1/4”.
D. Thickness - Using the side of the gauge marked with a “T”, insert the
gaff in the larger, then the small area of the opening. The gaff
can be inserted with either the underside or the ridge resting on
the gauge, but it must lie flat. If the gaff is correct thickness,
the tip will rest either between the two lines or between the edge
and the line, depending on which area of the “T” is being used.
E. Width - The width is measured by inserting the gaff into the larger, then
the smaller square holes on the side marked with a “W”. Once
again the gaff must lie flat on the gauge. If it is correct width,
the tip will fall between either the edge of the gauge and the first
line, or between the two center lines, depending on the hole the
gaff is inserted into.
F. Tip Contour - The tip of the gaff is inserted into the cut-out section of
the gauge, as indicated. If it is correct, the contour will follow
the outline of the gauge. This is the correct “chisel point” that will
allow optimum performance of the gaff.
CLIMBING G. Gaff Point - There is a tiny hole in the gauge. Place the hole over the tip
EQUIPMENT of the gaff. If the point can be felt through the hole, the gaff has
a needle point. A needle point may not perform properly and is
prone to breakage. The gaff should by removed from service.
Reshaping a Gaff
This must be done only as necessary and with great care. The
goal is to file away just enough steel in the gaff to allow it to
fit properly in the gauge. This is done by making even, round
cuts on the sides, and flat cuts underneath. (The same stroke
as sharpening.) This maintains the correct gaff shape. Never
file the ridge on the back of the gaff. When the gaff is properly
dimensioned, it can be returned to service.
