Ceo Picot and Moss is a proudly South African family business that has been synonymous with time since 1919. We are part of the fabric of South Africa. We weathered the storms and shared in the joy of South Africa’s transformation into an inclusive democracy. And now it’s time to take the next leap into the future because we
simply do not crack under pressure!
Today Picot and Moss with its two sister companies Architects of Time and Microtel, are responsible for the distribution of many of the world’s luxury watch, jewellery and eyewear brands in Southern Africa.
As proud South Africans we look for opportunities to support, participate and contribute to our country and her people. To that purpose we support worthy community driven initiatives launched by some of our
country’s heroes and sporting greats to uplift communities in need.
None of us are immune to the current situation but we have each other. Let’s all use this time as an opportunity to search out an opportunity to help our country and our people so that we can emerge on the other side stronger than ever.

BACKGROUND
Johannesburg born and bred David is both an astute businessman and a humanitarian. Over the last 40 years, he and his wife Jenny, not only built Picot and Moss into one of Southern Africa’s most successful luxury merchandise distributors but have also consistently used their exclusive brands to add value to the lives of many South Africans.
David is respected in the industry as an accomplished businessperson where his knowledge of the luxury goods and retail industries is highly valued and sought after. But what really sets him uniquely apart is the value he places on family, people and his country.
In his free time, David enjoys playing golf, poker and has a love-hate relationship with gym.
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE BUSINESS OF WATCHES?
After I qualified as a CA, I did a 5-year stint at Tiger Wheel & Tyre, ( an interesting experience, I can assure you!), before I branched out on my own to follow my passion for all things time and watches. My experience as a child in the family business ignited a desire in later years to re-acquire and re-ignite the company that had become dormant. I finally achieved that goal in the mid 80s when I was
able to buy the name and begin trading as Picot & Moss.
As luck would have it, at around the same , my brother-in-law was on holiday in Hong Kong and I needed a watchstrap. One innocuous telephone conversation asking him to get me a strap, was the catalyst the company needed. I started selling and distributing watch straps and even attended the Basel Fair to buy straps from various suppliers. I remember being very wary, scared even, to go and have a look at the watch pavilion! But, in 1989, we made it into Hall 1. Watch heaven they call it. It was also the year that our hard work ethic and determination landed us our first watch brand, ENICAR a very old Swiss band named after its founder (in reverse) Jean Jacques RACINE. We saw this as destiny because Jennifer’s first watch, a gift for her 18th birthday was an Enicar.”
Rado, from the Swatch Group followed. But the Picot and Moss team always had their sights set on the edginess and elegance of TAG Heuer. It took two years to get an appointment, but Jenny and I eventually got the big meeting with TAG Heuer in 1991 and I suppose the rest is history.”
Gucci followed, then Calvin Klein, IWC, Jaeger, Zenith and Hermes. The Swatch Group valued our leadership to the extent that they asked us to partner in a joint venture
to manage their entire portfolio of brands. We did that for about 8 years. Bulgari is our latest acquisition and the future is wide open.
Your first timepiece?
The very first watch I was given did not last long. I was 9 years old and my parents were in Switzerland. I so badly wanted a watch. A package was delivered to our house postmarked Switzerland. Overwhelmed with excitement, I tore open the box. I knew it was a watch, they heard my plea. In fact, it didn’t contain one watch, it contained 6 watches... all made of chocolate! Tasty, but it didn’t quite get me ticking!
WHAT AS THE LOCKDOWN MEANT TO YOU?
On a business front the lockdown has been a challenge with limited to no sales whilst overhead expenses remained the same. As a company, Picot and Moss needed to make decisions that forced a restructure of our thinking and an attitude to shift to the new normal. Like many companies, it means looking towards technology and exceptional customer service to meet the needs of customers today and tomorrow. On a personal note the lockdown has been a gift of a lifetime. It has given me hours and hours to spend with

my family, Jen, Alex our daughter, and our new granddaughter, Georgi. Day after day, I cannot believe how lucky I got. This has to be the true definition of quality time.
THE FAVOURITE THREE WATCHES IN YOUR COLLECTION?
The only watches I really collect are vintage. My favourite would have to be my original blue dial Monaco as worn by Steve McQueen in the movie Grand Prix. I also managed to acquire an original blue dial Carrera. Lastly, although a timepiece not a watch, there is a Baby Ben that I still use to this day.
WHAT DO THESE PIECES SAY ABOUT YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE?
I suppose they talk to my love of sport, the value I see in quality items, my fanatical attention to detail, and finally, they probably illustrate my attachment to and respect for history.
THE ONE WATCH YOU’LL NEVER PART WITH?
Undoubtedly my original blue dial Monaco.
What are your thoughts about buying online?
Unless you can establish that you are dealing with a website that is authorized by the brand consider it will the most dangerous purchase you can ever make because :
• You could be the receipt of stolen products (and seen to be funding organized crime).
• Worse the product may be the result of an armed robbery and your purchase may be confiscated, by authorities.

The rebirth of an Icon. The new Alpine Eagle sports chic timepieces are the result of a state-of-the-art reinterpretation of the St. Moritz, the first watch created in 1980 by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele.
Contemporary, refined and assertive are just a few bold traits of the new Alpine Eagle timepieces, crafted using an exclusive, ultra-resistant and light-reflecting metal named Lucent Steel A223.
This Chopard proprietary alloy is partially composed of recycled stainless steel. CHRONOMASTER REVIVAL “SHADOW”
The Chronomaster Revival “Shadow” takes it monochromatic colours from a 1970 prototype that had a large case in black-coated steel.
The Shadow has a look often found in sports watch, but it’s an effective, functional look. And Zenith was smart with the details, streamlining the dial for a clean, stark look. The outer seconds track and date, for instance, have both been done away with, and the tachymetric scale has been simplified.
The Shadow is a blend of modern and vintage elements. The 37 mm case is in micro-blasted titanium. Created by using extremely tiny beads for the blasting process, the result is a grained but smooth surface.
Overall the Shadow is a good piece for someone who likes the A385 case shape, but wants a clean, modern style instead of a faithful vintage remake.

In the Endeavour Tourbillon Concept, H. Moser & Cie. has managed to extract the essence of this complex mechanism: the movement is housed in a 42mm white gold case and the focus is all on the flying tourbillon whose cage is enhanced using aerospace aluminium. This reduces inertia and improves isochronism and accuracy.

Black is the new gold in this high tech ceramic creation of the ground breaking Zenith Defy El
Primero 21.
But this time, ZENITH is achieving a new record as the world’s most accurate series-made chronograph. Beating at the impressive frequency of 360,000 vibrations per hour and thereby reaching the rate of 50 Hertz, it runs 10 times faster than the original El Primero. And as if this was not enough, this new chronograph movement, certified by Time Lab, drives a hundredth of a second display with one rotation per second.
That basically means that the central chronograph hand performs a full turn of the dial in one second, a truly masterful watchmaking achievement
All of this is made possible thanks to the movement’s dual architecture. El Primero 21 is equipped with two independent escapements; one for the watch and one for the chronograph. For such an accurate and powerful watch one needs a proper power reserve! It is split into two distinct parts, 50 hours for the watch and 50 minutes for the Chrono. This is why the movement has 2 independent barrels, resulting in 2 independent sources of energy. You can find the power reserve indication at 12 o’clock.

existence: the Red Carpet Collection.
This year, Caroline Scheufele, Co-President & Artistic Director of Chopard and initiator of its Journey to Sustainable Luxury, has decided to celebrate the environment, along with its flora and fauna, by choosing ‘Nature’ as the main theme of the collection.

hese words by Monsier Dior shed light on the reason why the Dior Grand Bal collection is reminiscent of the magical swirling of a ball gown, in tune with the cutting-edge “Dior
Inverse’” calibre.
This one of a kind movement, developed by Les Ateliers Horlogers Dior in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in association with Soprod manufacturer showcases its functional rotor deliberately and audaciously placed on the front of the dial. The true significance of style in horology can be found in the metiers d’art, transforming the watch dial into an artist’s canvas and this is particularly visible in the Dior Grand Bal Collection of timepieces.
The Grand Bal “Miss Dior” takes us deep into the heart of Christian Dior’s garden with its oscillating weight embellished with precious petals encrusted with diamonds: a real example of the refinement that prevails in the ateliers of the greatest couturiers.
The lining of the strap as well as the pink or blue sapphire crystal case-back are details only known to the wearer.
