BIRD BOX SUMMARY Bird Box by Josh Malerman is a haunting and gripping novel that plunges readers into a world ravaged by an unexplained and deadly phenomenon. Set in a postapocalyptic landscape, the story unfolds amid a pervasive sense of dread and uncertainty, where the simple act of opening one's eyes can lead to madness and violence. The protagonist, Malorie, finds herself navigating this terrifying reality while pregnant, as the mysterious force, ominously referred to as "the Problem," spreads relentlessly across the globe. Forced to adapt to the ever present danger, Malorie joins a small band of survivors who cling to their waning humanity in the face of overwhelming chaos. Together, they embark on a journey of survival, cloaked in darkness and guided by their heightened senses. Central to the narrative are Malorie's struggles as a mother, tasked with protecting her unborn child and later her two children, Boy and Girl, in a world where the slightest glance can spell doom. As she grapples with the relentless threats lurking in the shadows, Malorie must confront not only external dangers but also the internal demons that threaten to consume her. The novel unfolds through a dual timeline, alternating between Malorie's perilous river journey with her children and the earlier days of the outbreak, where society unravels amidst escalating panic and paranoia. Through Malerman's masterful storytelling, themes of fear, survival instinct, isolation, and sacrifice are woven into the fabric of the narrative, exploring the depths of human resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. 03 May 2024

CHARACTER STUDY- MALORIE NOAH S, OKLAHOMA 04 Malorie is a character shaped by the harsh realities of a post apocalyptic world in the story “Bird Box” by Josh Malerman. As a mother, her primary concern is the safety and well being of her two children, a responsibility she takes on with fierce determination. She's a survivor, good at navigating the dangers that lurk around every corner, and she's willing to make difficult decisions to ensure the survival of her and her family. While she may appear unemotional and guarded, Malorie's stoic facade belies a deep well of fear and vulnerability. The trauma of her past weighs heavily on her, shaping her interactions with others and fueling her relentless drive to protect her loved ones. Despite her fears, she possesses a resilience born of necessity, adapting to new challenges and confronting adversity with unwavering resolve. Trust doesn't come easily to Malorie, as she's learned the hard way that betrayal and loss are constants in her world. Yet, beneath her wariness lies a flicker of hope, a belief that there's still goodness to be found in the darkness. It's this hope that sustains her through the darkest moments, driving her to keep pushing forward, even when the odds seem insurmountable.

SUMMARY ONE OF US IS BACK "One of Us Is Back" by Karen M. McManus is the third installment in the "One of Us Is Lying" series. In this gripping novel, McManus continues to explore the lives of Bayview High School students. The story picks up after the events of the previous books, with the aftermath of Simon's death still casting a shadow over the students. The book starts out as every character going through their own ways through life after the incident that put Jake in jail. He almost killed Addy, his girlfriend at the time, and many others. As well, he set a bomb at a party where the friends group was having. Soon after, Jake is let out of jail and will have a new hearing to plead not guilty. When the group starts seeing him out in public, things in Bayview start getting weird. In the other books Simon has died but in “one of us is Lying” it reveals that he was the master mind to all the tricks that people in Bayview thought were from Jake. Jake was a bad person to people but he didnt do the tricks like the billboard. Simon was behind everything from the beginning and no one knew he was even alive. Nate, Phoebe, Jake, Cooper, and Addy are all coming back together to break down the lies they have been told. 05

The relationship between Addy and Jake Addy is the one closest to Jake because they were in a relationship. In the beginning of the relationship, they were seen as the perfect couple in their high school and that they would be together forever. During the relationship Jake would push Addy around, be manipulative, and possessive. He would make her do things she didn’t want to do and pushed her out of her comfort zone. She always stayed by his side no matter what, so that led him to take it for granted for what he would do to her soon. When she realized that he isn't what she wants be became violent and threatened her. Jake first got caught with murdering one of her friends. He kidnapped her and was going to kill her the same day as her friend. When she kept fighting back, he then would try to make her take the fall for it so he wouldn't go to jail. When she escapes him he goes missing for a while but plants a bomb in one of her friends party which almost kills everyone at the party. When he is finally put in prison she feels at peace for once until she finds out hes getting out soon. She doesn't understand how he could be let out so early when he didn't finish his sentence. Slowly the group of bay view starts seeing him around more and Addy is paranoid because she thinks he might attack her again. ISSUE 01 November 2025 06 06

In "Admission" by Julie Buxbaum, Portia is arrested due to her involvement in her daughter’s college admissions scandal. This scandal involves wealthy and influential parents bribing college officials or cheating on standardized tests to secure admission for their children, like Portia was doing for Chloe, just to get into a prestigious university. Portia's arrest likely stems from her desire to ensure her daughter's admission to a top-tier university by any means necessary. Her actions reflect the intense pressure and competition surrounding college admissions, particularly among affluent families who are willing to go to extreme lengths to secure spots for their children. Portia's arrest serves as a pivotal moment in the story, forcing Chloe to confront the consequences of her mother's actions and reevaluate her own values and ambitions. 09 PORTIA’S SCANDAL May 2024 ISSUE 01
