JONATHAN BURKE Welcome to Laguna College of Art + Design.
President
Laguna College of Art + Design Since its founding in 1961, Laguna College of Art + Design has remained located in
the vibrant coastal arts community of Laguna Beach. Yet, our reputation extends well
beyond the sage-covered hills and scenic shorelines of our beautiful and historic city
that has attracted artists for more than a century. Today, our state-of-the-art campus
connects you to a far-reaching creative community comprised of leaders in the industries
of arts and entertainment.

Pursuing an LCAD education will place you among the most talented students and
instructors of art and design. Whatever your major, you will receive the highest caliber
classical arts education in small and intimate classes with faculty, facilities, and resources

STUDENT LIFE LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

LCAD strives to maintain a close-knit community and
we are committed to providing you with personalized
attention. Our dedicated staff provide a variety
of student services geared toward making your
experience at LCAD one that is positive and enduring.
Each year, our Student Activities Coordinator plans
student elections for the student government, Rush
Night, community breakfasts, a Halloween costume
contest, Major Wars, pet therapy, a bonfire at Aliso
Creek Beach, and much more.
LCAD’s Student Services office also provides
individualized tutoring and counseling.

within the boundaries of some of Southern California’s last Blizzard
undeveloped and protected coastal canyons and bordered

As one of the world’s first all-laptop and wireless campuses, LCAD has been a leader in
collegiate technological innovations since the turn of the twenty-first century. And this
kind of pioneering is evident in every LCAD degree program. Our ongoing investment
in innovative tools and technologies helps to ensure that your path to success will
remain obstacle-free.

17OUR CAMPUS

SAFETY LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

LCAD is located in Laguna Beach, one of the safest
cities in Orange County, CA.
LCAD is committed to the safety and security of its
entire community. Each semester, LCAD Campus Safety
presents a Safety 101 orientation for all new students
and, throughout the year, offers several Campus
Safety workshops to all LCAD students. General safety
tips also are sent to the entire student body via email.
LCAD Campus Safety is sworn to maintaining safe and
secure living, learning, and working environments
for the entire campus community.
All LCAD facilities receive frequent patrols by a
Campus Safety Officer in a marked Campus Safety
vehicle, and Campus Safety Officers are available
as parking lot escorts during all regularly scheduled
campus hours.

Our historic Main Campus is site to most of our
courses in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Illustration,
and Liberal Arts. Here, you’ll find our Dennis and
Leslie Power Library, our Writing Lab, Student and
Career Services, one of three campus IT Helpdesks,
a Fabrication Lab, indoor/outdoor student lounge
and courtyard, and Nina’s Park, where you’ll often
find yourself unwinding and enjoying the tranquility
and beauty of our stunning natural setting.

FINE ARTS STUDIOS

With a history of some of Southern California’s greatest
figurative artists teaching or studying within the
walls of our Fine Arts studios, these highly adaptive
spaces offer you not only controlled balanced light
that allows for a range of dynamic studio practices
and compositions, but also amazing pedigree. No
matter what your major is, you will take studio courses
like Fundamentals of Drawing here, and if you are
a Fine Arts student, you will take classes like Group
Composition, where you will draw or paint from live
draped and undraped models.

DENNIS AND LESLIE POWER
LIBRARY

Located on LCAD’s historic Main Campus, the Dennis
and Leslie Power Library is the intellectual heart of
the College. Our library plays an integral role in
supporting instruction in the visual arts and, whatever
your major, places the best possible resources at your
fingertips. The Library offers a range of community
events throughout the year and always provides
you a safe and comfortable place to study, to seek
knowledge, and to gather with other members
of the LCAD community. In addition to serving as
home to the College’s historic archives, our library
encourages your intellectual discovery and inspires
lifelong learning through its wide-ranging print and
electronic resources.

BIG BEND LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

LCAD’s Big Bend campus is home to our Visual
Communications classrooms and computer labs for
Animation, Game Art, and Graphic Design + Digital
Media. Our goal is to help you become the best in
your field, and that’s why facilities like our Big Bend
classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art tools
and technologies. Gifted students from around the
world come to LCAD to achieve their fullest potentials
as artists, leaders, and global citizens, and Big Bend is
where they take their first footsteps toward becoming
industry leaders.

CINTIQ LAB

Our Cintiq Lab provides a seamless transition
between the classical drawing, painting, and
sculpting skills you’ll learn in your Foundation
classes and the creation of art in the digital world.
Eighteen student workstations with high-definition
Cintiqs and a teaching computer connected to a
digital projector allow your entire class to follow
along with your instructor. Whether creating CG
models, coloring animated scenes, painting textures,
or life drawing, working with a stylus directly on the
screen offers an intuitive experience so you can
focus on doing your most creative work unhindered
by technical  limitations.

DOWN-SHOOTER LABS

Creating a convincing animated performance
requires careful timing and spacing of images down
to 1/24 of a second. Our two Down-Shooter Labs
provide Animation students with professional tools
to make high quality pencil tests of their traditionally
animated scenes, work on CG animation, or take
their films to final color. The Down-Shooter Labs are
dedicated student workspaces, so, during regularlly
scheduled hours, you will have unrestricted and
uninterrupted access to the equipment you need
to bring your work to life.

SUZANNE CHONETTE SENIOR STUDIOS20

LCAD’s Suzanne Chonette Senior Studios is
a modern, 5,400 square foot facility featuring
light-filled, well-ventilated studios and
workspaces designed to meet your special
needs when you’re a senior from any of
LCAD’s undergraduate degree programs.
Depending on your major, as a senior,
you’ll spend time here either working at
your own private workstation or in your own
private studio.

21SOUTH CAMPUS

SOUTH CAMPUS LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN

South Campus is LCAD’s latest addition and stands emblematic of our dedication
to ensuring that you enter the professional world prepared for the demands of your
creative industry. If you are a Graphic Design + Digital Media student, you may find
yourself utilizing a portion of this space as your senior studio workspace. If you take
classes in Extended Reality Design (XDR), you’ll find yourself spending time in our
new AR/VR lab with state-of-the-art green screen and VR room. There’s also a studio
for drawing and painting courses. And no matter what your major is, you may find your
work exhibited here in LCAD Gallery 805.

XRD LAB

LCAD’s Extended Reality Design (XRD) Lab is our newest and most advanced offering.
While other institutions focus on AR/VR research, LCAD’s XRD Lab provides a rare
resource for AR/VR education and experimentation. The space features our new 
AR/VR lab with state-of-the-art green screen facilities where you not only create in
AR/VR, but also help to innovate within this burgeoning field.

STUDENT HOUSING

Welcome to LCAD’s student housing, a small, modern suite complex
that accommodates you and up to 56 other students in well-appointed
residences. Our on-campus housing is located just three quarters of a
mile from our Main Campus and is just a short walk to downtown Laguna
Beach’s shopping, dining, and beachside boardwalk. Supervised
by the Assistant Dean of Students and Resident Advisors, the LCAD
Housing experience promotes communal living and provides you
more than just a fun and convenient place to live. It provides you a
place in which to learn, to grow, and to make a difference.

Our Off-Campus Housing Coordinator will assist you in your search for
off-campus housing. The coordinator will provide you with listings of
houses, apartments, rooms in houses, guesthouses, and other rooms
for rent in Laguna Beach and its surrounding communities.

CAREER SERVICES

As an LCAD student, you will benefit greatly from connections
with our industry leaders and our educational partners. These
high-level connections facilitate your access to key internships
and employment  opportunities.

If you are a student of our Visual Communications programs, LCAD
hosts an annual Industry Open House, an event that places your work
before the eyes of creative industry leaders. And if you are a student
of our Fine Arts program, our one-of-a-kind Professional Mentoring
Program will pair you with member galleries of Laguna Beach’s First
Thursdays Art Walk who will guide you through the fundamentals of
exhibiting your work in a professional arena and will educate you in
the business of operating a gallery.

We know what it takes to make you a successful artist or designer
who is equipped for the current demands of your respective field.
Because of our notable commitment to preparing students for the
rapidly changing demands of the creative arts industries, it is very likely
that you will be offered employment and/or internship opportunities
even prior to graduation.

93% of our 2016 graduates surveyed currently are working
full-time, with 79% employed in their chosen fields.

Character animation is the art of creating not only motion but LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN
also emotion over time. Whether working with paper, pixels,
or puppets, LCAD Animation majors are skilled at shaping
compelling, frame-by-frame performances that inspire viewers
to accept that the characters on screen are alive with genuine
thoughts and sincere emotions.
Our Animation program is dedicated to training exceptional
storytellers who understand the entire process of filmmaking
from script to screen.

LCAD’s Drawing + Painting program is distinguished by a LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN
philosophy that is grounded in classical artistic traditions.
This integral aspect of our Fine Arts department will be the
driving force behind your success.
Our Fine Arts curriculum was crafted carefully to provide you
the most effective learning experiences that will result in the
acquisition of skills you need to accurately portray still lifes,

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS LCAD is one of only a few dually accredited
institutions committed to developing highly skilled
DRAWING + PAINTING representational figurative artists who graduate
prepared to enter the competitive art market. To
ensure that you are prepared for the challenges of
a demanding and competitive art world, you will
be exposed to the business side of professional art
practices, including marketing and presentation.

LCAD’s Drawing + Painting alumni are accepted

LCAD is unique in being one of only a handful of LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN
accredited colleges to offer courses in figurative
sculpture that focus on classical techniques with an
emphasis on multi-figurative compositions.
As a student of LCAD’s Drawing + Painting major,
you will have the option to pursue a degree with
an emphasis in sculpture. The Sculpture Emphasis
will teach you the mold making and casting skills to
produce ¼ life-size to monumental-sized sculptures
that convey contemporary narrative themes. Our
sculpture curriculum is based in classical techniques
and will prepare you to enter the competitive field
of sculpture by gaining commissions, exhibiting as
a gallery artist, obtaining public grants, applying to
residencies, or branching out into the entertainment
and special effects industries.
