CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1: INTRODUCTION OF PRACTICAL TRAINING
The internship is a fundamental platform for anyone to gain a wakeup call in an actual
workplace. Thus, Ala 3371: Landscape Architecture Internship is a good opportunity for
Landscape Architecture students to learn, to gain experience and also to make preparation.
Landscape Architecture Internship is a compulsory course for all student in Bachelor of
Landscape Architecture. It is a requirement to fulfil this course in order to complete the degree
and also graduate from the university as landscape Architecture student. There was no
restriction was given whether student want to work for government agencies or private
organisation. Students need to undergo the training at the chosen company for 16 weeks which
started from 22 February 2021 until 11 June 2021. During the internship, we will be monitored
by a company supervisor that had been selected to assist us in completing the given tasks or
projects.
People learn through experience, and a real life is full of different kinds of experiences.
We will meet many difficulties and obstacles, and with experiences and knowledge we are
expected to be able to encourage and complete the cleansing process. Experience may be a very
valuable thing in life because we need to be brave in taking risks. It is also not something that
we create easily, but we need to feel through it. By doing my internship in an actual workplace,
it helps me to understand and find out myself from different angle. It also helps me to regulate
and develop my attitude and behaviour in handling different sorts of people and situation.
I took this internship course with my pleasure to grab the golden opportunities to
apply theories and knowledge that I have in real working life setting. Through learning at
campus, I learned about theories but by doing practical training, I learned the practicality
10
approach on dealing with a real world. Although it was not that much, it still has good results
in some aspects of my life. In some ways, I also even had learned that I am still lacking as
an individual and employee.
During my almost 4 months of internship, I want to actively contribute to the
company’s objectives by applying the knowledge I obtained during my education
environment at the same time, I want to uphold the vision and mission of the company in
realizing its objective of establishment.
I chose SKA Landscape Architects as my host company for me to complete my
internship. I have a few reasons onto choosing this place to do my practical training. First
of all, my rent house is nearby to the office. Thus, it would be much easier for me to go to
work only by walking that only take 4 minutes to arrive. Secondly, I wanted to have a full of
excitement and experiences period of internship by exploring there myself. The environment
was such a lot different and new me. Perhaps, all the experiences while having internship in
SKA Landscape Architects will be beneficial in future.
11
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF INTERNSHIP
The main objective of internship is to expose students in real industrial and working
environment besides of providing them with vast experiences. Furthermore, this internship
gives chances to student for applying their acquired knowledge and skills during the study at
the campus in the occupied situation.
In addition, students can develop their critical thinking and new skills at the companies
that they are attached to through the “hands-on” activities. Critical thinking is vibrant in the
real life situation as it help to solve any unpredicted problems arise which require the students
to make on-the-spot decisions that can affect the desired outcome. Other than that, internship
is highlighting on morals and professionalism such as punctuality, work manner, team spirit
and trustworthiness which can help to build up the positive character of the students.
Besides, the industrial training make a good relation for both IIUM and the practical
companies involved as they shared the social obligation together. Internship is one of the
mediums for IIUM to identify industries’ current needs, hence improving any weaknesses
discovered. As a result, the university will be able to strengthen its curriculum and produce
the proactive alumni that required by the industry. The main objectives for the student to
perform practical training is to give them working experience with specific task that was given
by an organization. Other objectives of practical training are as follows: -
i. To fulfil the degree in IIUM
ii. Apply knowledge learnt in class
iii. To build students confidence after graduation
iv. Improve both soft and hard skills
v. Improve communication and management skills

CHAPTER 4: PROJECT
4.1 THE MARK AT CHERAS
One of the main projects I worked on was a project at Cheras. The Mark at Cheras is a
leasehold property located along Jalan Cemara 1 in Taman Bukit Segar, Cheras, Selangor.
This is a 28 storey and a 30-storey building with around 400 units. The Mark is an almost
completed development which already shows its full potential located on the top of the hill
but the development of this project abandoned by the developer before. Thus, SKA
Landscape Architects took over this project in term of designing the landscape area. SKA
Landscape Architects were responsible in designing landscape for three level which are the
landscape area for ground floor, level 8 and 9.
Figure 1
On my first day of internship, my supervisor assigned me to make a table of shrub quantity
that consist in ground floor plan based on plan that provided by the developer by using
AutoCAD. I had to make the area for shrub and hatch the area by using different pattern to
differentiate the species of shrub. Later, I had to calculate the area of the shrub by the species
as shown in Figure 1.
19
Figure 2
Figure 2 shown the result of ground floor plan in A1 size paper layout after transfer the
softscape plan of shrub. The overall landscape masterplan includes the softscape element
include shrub, tree and turfing plan.
Figure 3
Later, my supervisor assigned me to check all the drawing that emailed by the
developer as shown in figure 3 in order to get the suitable construction detail for the
hardscape detail plan. I had to choose the drawing that suitable for hardscape detail of
hardscape element in ground floor, level 8 and 9.
20
Figure 4
The next task for me were to produce three sectional elevation plan of ground floor, level 8
and 9 using AutoCAD software. The section of the building already provided by the
architect. Then I had to use and add the softscape element on that three floor as shown in
figure 4.
Figure 5
Figure 5 above illustrated the result of section elevation on A1 size paper layout. Each
species of the softscape element need to be annotate properly based on landscape masterplan.
21
Figure 6
Figure 6 illustrated the hardscape element construction detail of concrete seating, integrated
playground, seamless rubber flooring and reflexology path that I had to prepare.
Figure 7
All the hardscape detail needs to compile in one A1 paper size as illustrated in figure 7. All
the detail needs to arrange accordingly so that the scale of the drawing was proportion and
can be read easily by the contractor.
22
Figure 8
My supervisor assigns me to design the external landscape work area to comply the comment
by MPAJ. They request to have some hardscape element to be provide at green area. I had
to sketch it manually to give draft idea of the design and email it to the client and others
consultant that involve in this project as shown in figure 8.
Figure 9
After the design idea confirmed and accepted by the clients, I had to transfer the manual
sketch drawing into AutoCAD to make a proper plan that in scale and proportion as
illustrated in figure 9.
23
Figure 10
After preparing the external landscape work plan, I had to prepare documentation of bill of
quantity by using Microsoft excel. This documentation consists of estimate price for
hardscape and landscape components of ground floor, level 8, level 9 and area for external
work as shown in figure 10.
Figure 11
Based on figure 11, the bill of quantity divided into two section which are estimate price for
softscape and hardscape work. This documentation needs to convert to pdf as this bill of
quantity need to email to clients.
24
Figure 12
After the designing process of external work area complete, my supervisor assigns me to
make perspective based on design by using adobe photoshop software. This perspective is
necessary in order to make the clients see the idea of design clearly. The area divided into
two area. Figure 12 illustrated the area that located in front of The Mark building.
Figure 13
Later, I had to prepare a slide presentation that consist of the perspective by using Microsoft
PowerPoint. The original image also needs to include in order to differentiate what changes
that have taken place. The slide needs to annotate properly as can be seen in figure 13.
25
Figure 14
Figure 14 illustrate the perspective of the second external work area. This perspective also
done by using adobe photoshop software. This area is important to show the design as this
area consist of bus stop for public.
Figure 15
Same as the first perspective, this perspective also needs to include in the slide presentation
together with the original image of the area before insert the propose design. The hardscape
and softscape element that proposed need to annotate clearly so that the clients aware of the
design proposed.
26
Figure 16
Other than produce drawing, my supervisor also assigned me to prepare the planting palette
for this project. This palette was divided into four groups that represent plants for ground
floor, level 8,9 and including external work area. Each level will be divided into four group
also such as tree, shrub, palm and turfing. Figure 16 illustrated the group of shrubs.
Figure 17
As shown in figure 17, the planting palette need to provide the specific name, common name,
trunk height, diameter trunk and overall. If the tree has different size, both dimensions need
to be list as this planting palette need to be print as my supervisor need to bring this to the
nursery when he wants to select the plants for the project.
27
4.2 PRECINCT 19
This project was located at Precinct 19, Putrajaya. This project involve in construction and
completion of main road, drainage, utility and landscape works at the southern zone. The
objectives of this project are to prioritize the security features, concern on factors of comfort
and beauty of an area and prioritize the balance between green space and development.
Figure 18
Figure 18 shown the masterplan of the Precinct 19 project. I was assigned to clear all the
unnecessary thing of the masterplan such as pedestrian signs because it is included under
structural consultant.
28
Figure 19
To make it clear, figure 19 shown the specific area for the cleaning process of the masterplan.
Figure 20
After the task done, I had to compile it an A1 paper size layout and then save it in PDF
format as illustrated in figure 20.
29
4.3 MASJID ECO ARDENCE
Masjid Eco Ardence project is a landscape design project for build and complete a two-storey
mosque with a hall, electric facilities and garbage dump facilities in Section u12, Shah Alam.
The concept of this design is “NUR OASIS” which means the unification of modern
landscapes with building signs to show a soft and real transition that include the harmonious
design in addition to the interaction between the activities and functions of an area in the
mosque.
Figure 21
For this project, my supervisor assigns me to do a construction detail plan for a wakaf that
will be construct as it is one of the hardscape elements that included in this project. The
construction detail plan should be consisting of 4 plan such as roof plan, front elevation and
section. The pattern of the wakaf itself has Islamic design element to comply with the
building of mosque design as shown in figure 21.
30
Figure 22
All the element and item of the detail should be annotate properly as shown clearly in figure
22. After the detail complete, I had to compile all the plan in an A1 size paper layout and
then convert it in PDF format.
Figure 23
After the construction detail plan done, I had another task which are to prepare hardscape
construction detail for another element as illustrated in figure 23. The hardscape element
includes the tree pot, G.I tying, concrete seating, garden tap and dustbin. All the element
should have detail of plan, section, elevation and also the image of the element to make the
detail of the construction clear.
31
Figure 24
All the hardscape detail needs to compile in one A1 paper size as illustrated in figure 24. All
the detail needs to arrange accordingly so that the scale of the drawing were proportion and
can be read easily by the contractor.
32
4.4 MUZIUM SETEM
Proposed landscape design of Petaling district stamp museum, Shah Alam, Selangor. In this
project, trees and shrubs along the building perimeter known as a boundary and follow the
concept of envelope. Pocket plaza will be provided as resting area with additional outdoor
information of stamp for local or tourist visitors. Not only that, multipurpose sculptural boxes
also will be provided in this design to act as interactive hardscape element.
Figure 25
For this project, my supervisor assigns me to search all picture of Malaysia stamp of the
selected softscape element as the landscape project was for Muzium Setem. All the softscape
element used in this project are the local tree so all the tree had their own stamp in Malaysia.
All the picture needs to save in the same folder of the tree as illustrated in figure 25 so that
easy for me to search it back later.
33
Figure 26
After that, I had to compose all the tree and it stamp on the A3 size paper layout according
to the location of the tree as shown in figure 26. This planting palette divided into 2 part to
make the photo can be seen clearly. Figure above illustrated the first area of the masterplan.
Figure 27
Figure 27 illustrated the second area of the masterplan that also need to compose all the
photo of trees and stamps according to their location. The font and annotate arrow in red
colour to make it bold to catch the eye of clients.
34
Figure 28
Figure 29
After that, my supervisor assigned me to create a three dimension of Muzium Setem bollard
by using SketchUp software. The bollard itself using the element of stamp which is using
Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka stamp for the design top of the bollard as can be seen clearly in
figure 28 and 29. There is also element of Hibiscus stamp at the back of the bollard in order
to comply with design concept.
35
Figure 30
After the three dimensions of bollard done, I had to make a construction detail drawing of
the bollard by using AutoCAD software. The construction detail plan consists of several
drawing such as plan, section, elevation and images of three dimension in order to give clear
instruction to the contractor as shown in figure 30.
Figure 31
All the construction detail drawing needs to be compile in an A1 size paper and needs to
arrange accordingly so that the scale of the drawing was proportion and can be read easily
by the contractor.
