2 ENTOMA NEWSLETTER 1/2021
Foreword
NEWLY ELECTED ENTOMA PRESIDENT 2021 - 2022
Dear distinguished ENTOMA members and future members,
I’m very honoured to be selected as the President of ENTOMA
2021-2022, and thank you for the trust and support you have given.
I’m so grateful for this opportunity and will strive in every way to
be worthy of ENTOMA.
With the strength of various members’ backgrounds in
entomology from different organizations, we ENTOMA
members must work together to achieve our vision
and mission. Throughout the years, our vision has
always been to establish ENTOMA as a central hub
of sharing and exchanging knowledge to develop an
advanced education and research in Malaysia and abroad. Working
together in hand with the ENTOMA committee 2021/2022, we aim to
promote and increase the visibility of ENTOMA through our activities such
as this bulletin, quarterly webinars, and our key conference: International
Symposium of Insects (ISoI).
Your support will become our backbone to continue making ENTOMA a
successful organization, and we are thankful for that.
"Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and
working together is a success." – Henry Ford

3 ENTOMA NEWSLETTER 1/2021
Messages From Previous ENTOMA
Presidents
Dr. Md. Yusof Husin “Professionalism are both ethical and workmanlike qualities
Ex-President of ENTOMA that separate professionals from amateur. ENTOMA was
1995 - 1997 established in 1994 to be the premier association of
professionals in the field of entomology. Membership in
ENTOMA will lead to high quality "products" and to public
trust in our value to society. Professional entomologists are
identified by their manner of conducting and communicate
science of entomology. There are many aspects of our
profession that most of us never learn under formal
environment. Entomology is not science until the results are
communicated to the appropriate audience, that is, scientific
colleagues, corporate management, students or public at
large. I sincerely hope that, on this occasion, the ENTOMA
Newsletter will be able to play the role and to preserve
professionalism among Malaysian entomological
professionals.”
“I am so overwhelmed to know that ENTOMA is publishing Dato’ Dr. Azhar Ismail
its own newsletter since it was first established. It is Ex-President of ENTOMA
certainly a fantastic news, and I certainly like to 2001 - 2002
congratulate the 2021 ENTOMA main committee members Ex-DG Malaysian Cocoa Board
for taking this noble initiative. I shall be feeling proud to Vice Chancellor, Nilai University
read this inaugural issue when it gets published.
While we have many social media platforms for
communication, I believe the ENTOMA Newsletter carry
more formalities in terms of communication and
digitalized documentation that may serve as institutional
memory for later reference. Also, the newsletter may
aspire members to publish their findings, observations, or
ideas as short communication for wider discussion. Hence,
I hope ENTOMA Newsletter should receive overwhelming
support from the ENTOMA members.
Once again, my hearty congratulations to ENTOMA on this
commendable effort in getting the publication of inaugural
issue of ENTOMA Newsletter. Keep up the good work and
my best wishes.”

4 ENTOMA NEWSLETTER 1/2021
“I am honored to be given the opportunity to say few words in
this 1st ENTOMA newsletter. As a three term (2010 – 2016) of
ENTOMA president and seeing its current development, I am
truly grateful that ENTOMA is beginning to catch the eye of the
public at large and accepted as one of the professional scientific
societies not only in Malaysia but also in Asian Region. The
ENTOMA is basically championing the role and contribution of
entomologists to the society, nation food safety and security as
well as a sustainable development of our country via research,
teaching, seminars, and outreach activities. To enhance these, I
wish to give tips which probably useful for the ENTOMA. First,
have insect projects with some primary and secondary schools to
inculcate the kids to get use and understand insect at early age
Prof. Dr. Idris Abd Ghani and probably design some competition between schools yearly.
Second, membership should be opened to all ages as some kids
(UKM) and youngster are currently beginning to love nature. Thirdly, in
collaboration universities, ENTOMA should consistently proposing
Ex-President of ENTOMA
2010 - 2016 to government to build an insect museum as we are yet to have
one. Fourthly, actively engage and/or invite external
entomologists to have collaborative research with related
universities, especially via post doctorate and adjunct or visiting
professor. By doing so, it strengthens and make ENTOMA more
relevant to the national development. I really believe that
ENTOMA could be like ESA in the future, and I pray for it. May
Allah wish ENTOMA the success journey.”
“The establishment of Entomological Society of Dr. Hj. Muzamil Hj. Mustaffa
Malaysia involves the participation from all government (UiTM)
departments, agencies, private sectors, and the Ex-President of ENTOMA
communities that have interest in the importance of 2017 - 2018
insects. In the 1990s the involvement was not
comprehensive but now with the current needs, many | Official website: http://entoma.net/
individuals and parties have joined ENTOMA. Starting
with the National Symposium on Insects in Melaka in
1997, ENTOMA has grown with involvement at the
international level such as the Asia Pacific Conference
on Entomology, Kuala Lumpur and four series of
International Symposiums on Insects (ISoI). I hope the
ENTOMA’s committee members as well as the
assistance of its members continue to support this
association to continue to grow even further. After
Memorandum of Understanding, MoUs with
Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia (PEI) and The
Entomological Society of Korea, ENTOMA may be able
to expand to West Asian, European countries and United
State of America. I wish good luck and all the best to
the ENTOMA’s committee and the members for the
future undertaking.”
5 ENTOMA NEWSLETTER 1/2021
“Congratulations to the current ENTOMA committee
members for the continual support and efforts in ensuring
that ENTOMA remains alive, active, and recognized all
around the globe. As the previous President, I will keep giving
my endless support in making ENTOMA one of the shining
stars and among the highly reputable societies in Malaysia
and abroad. All our registered members deserve to get
maximum benefit from the ENTOMA platform as a medium
for networking (academic and non-academic), exchange of
ideas and knowledge transfer through the social network
that has been listed as the vision and mission of
our society. Please do not miss any of the activities
Prof. Madya Dr. Salmah Yaakop
organized by ENTOMA. I hope our passion as
(UKM) entomologists have not faltered or lapsed even though we
Ex-President of ENTOMA are facing many obstacles during this challenging COVID-19
season. ENTOMA will have the largest and most important
2019 - 2020 meetings during the Fifth International Symposium of Insects
scheduled for 2022. Please save the date, and let us get
involved!.”

Isolation and characterization of human DNA
recovered from bed bugs, Cimex hemipterus (F.)
(Hemiptera: Cimicidae)
Lim, L., & Ab Majid, A. H.
Prof. Madya Dr. Abdul Hafiz Ab Majid
[email protected]
Cimex hemipterus (the tropical bed bug) or also known as pijat or pepijat in Malay is
an ectoparasite insect that mostly feed on human blood (hematophagous). This insect can
be found in hiding places such as in mattresses and bed frames. The bed bugs must take a
blood meal several times in their lifetime in order to molt from one nymphal stage to another.
Although this insect is known as pest, its presence can be very important in certain cases, for
example in crime investigations. The ability to isolate and generate a DNA profile from human
DNA recovered from the tropical bed bugs for identifying individuals can be useful for public
health, forensic, and medical entomology. In this study, adult male and female bed bugs were
allowed to feed on the arm of a human volunteer. Genomic DNA was then recovered from
both male and female bed bugs at every time interval tested (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 30, and 45 days
post blood meal). The total DNA concentrations recovered from male bed bugs ranged from
12.93 to 65.97 ng/µL, while the total DNA concentrations from female bed bugs ranged from
8.93 to 44.53 ng/µL. The key findings of this research are:
1. DNA could be recovered from both post-feeding male and female tropical bed bugs up to
45 days after feeding.
2. The concentrations of DNA recovered from female bed bugs were generally higher than
those obtained from male bed bugs.
3. Human DNA could be detected from genetic material isolated from post-feeding female
tropical bed bugs up to 30 days through amplifying the D18S51 locus (a location of a
specific gene on a chromosome).
4. The results indicate that it is possible to generate a human DNA profile from genetic
material isolated from tropical bed bugs for individual identification.
5. In the absence of stain materials, the created human DNA profiles collected from bed bugs
presented at crime scenes have a significant potential to identify the perpetrators or
victims in cases of attacks or kidnappings.
