III UNIT III : Period of Dissent and Protest : Importance of 6th C B.C - Contri-
bution of Jainism and Buddhism to Indian Culture.

Foundation of Mauryan Empire : Chandragupta Maurya - Kautilyan Principles;
Ashoka - Kalinga War - Principles of Ashoka’s Dhamma - State and Society.

Mahayana Buddhism. Gandhara Art. (20 hours)

IV UNIT IV : Classical Period : Cultural Legacy of the Gupta Age : Art, Re-
ligion, Literature, Science. Economic prosperity, Industry and Trade - Nalanda
University.
