​FRENCH LANGUAGE SYLLABUS UNDER AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM
​ SEMESTER I & II (Degree I yr.) – BA/B.Sc./BVC/BSW

Curriculum: Corresponds to the A1 level offered by the Alliance Française, the language and
cultural centre of the Ministry of Education, France.

TEXTBOOK: Alter Ego (+1) by Hachette Education.

Marks allotted to each component from chapters given below: a) Concepts: 25%. b) Grammar:
25%. c) Vocabulary: 25%. d) Expression: 25%

First semester syllabus: Chapter 0, 1,2,3,4 and till lesson 2 of chapter 5 of the above-mentioned
textbook form the syllabus of the first semester.

Chapter 0: Discovery – French first names and surnames, few French and international
personalities.

Objective: to introduce oneself and know the identity of others, to communicate in class.

Chapter 1: one and all.

Objective: to greet and take leave of someone, to ask and give personal information, how to
ask for the price of something, speaking of one’s passions, of one’s dreams.

Chapter 2: Here and there .

Objective: name and locate places in a city, speaking of a city, enquiring about lodging, thanking
someone or responding to it, indicating a simple itinerary, writing f a postal card, giving
impressions of a place, speaking of a country of origin and destination, saying the time.

Chapter 3: Tell me who you are.

Objective: speaking of one’s interests and hobbies, of one’s profession, of oneself;
characterizing a person, speaking of one’s family, understanding a birth announcement,
wedding invitation, congratulating someone or offering condolences.

Chapter 4: to each their routine,

Objective: asking and giving time schedules, speaking of one’s daily habits, proposing and
accepting an outing, giving instructions, speaking of one’s projects, daily activities and use of
time, narrating past events.

Chapter 5: Time

Objective: understanding a survey questionnaire, making a call and responding, giving advice.

Semester – I & II

S​ ummary of grammar concepts: Semester – I.

1. The adjectives of nationality – masculine/feminine.

2. Articles - definite & indefinite

3. The gender of names of countries.

4. The verbs : a. (Indicative) Present Tense : (i) S’appeler/être/avoir.

(ii) The verbs ending with –er.

(iii) Verbs ending with –re : prendre/entendre/apprendre/descendre.

(iv) The verbs : aller/faire/vouloir/pouvoir/venir/dire.

(v) The verbs ending –ir : finir/rougir.

(vi) The pronominal verbs.

b. Affirmative and negative sentences.

c. The imperative mood/the near future /the recent past/simple future /present continuous and the
simple past tense avec the auxiliaries’ être and avoir.

5. The possessive /demonstrative/interrogative adjectives.

(of), what, who/whom.

7. The prepositions of place (where?) ; les prepositions + names of countries.

First semester syllabus: Chapter 5 (lesson 1), beginning with lesson 2, chapter 6,7, 8, and 9 of
the above-mentioned text book form the syllabus of the second semester

Chapter 5: ​Time

Objective: Evoking past acts, understanding biographical information, describing a person and
evoking resemblance.

Chapter 6: Travel

Objective – speaking of seasons, sensations, understanding simple information about weather,
climate; placing of events in a year, geographical location of a place, presenting and
characterizing a place, speaking of open air activities, writing a programme of visits, speaking of
ones cultural interests and writing a letter from a place of vacation.

Chapter 7: it’s my choice.

Speaking of one’s food choices, writing and understanding a menu; describing one’s clothes,
neagative and positive appreciation, asking for size politely, advice, choosing a gift and
characterizing an object.

Chapter 8: Living in a city.

Objective: making purchases, making a grocery list, presenting a restaurant, expressing
satisfaction/dissatisfaction with a dish, evoking memories.

Chapter 9: Places in life

Objective: speaking of transformations made to a place, placing an event on the time line,
looking for a place to live, understanding and asking for additional information on lodging,
description of an atypical house, speaking of relations with co-tenants and rules and regulations
to be followed.

Semester - II:​ Paper code : FH -218

1. The pronoun ‘there’ (complement of place).

2. Structure for speaking of climate/of weather; structure for placing an event in a year
(season/date/month).

3. a. The prepositions « from/of and at/to »: in the name of a dish.

b. The partitive/definite/indefinite articles. c. The negative quantity.
4. The direct and indirect pronouns (3 r​ d ​person).

5. The relative pronouns who/whom and that.

6. Structure to give advice.

7. The pronoun «about/of it ».

8. a. The negation: not…….any more. b. The restriction: only/not…….either. c. Enough/not enough/too
much (of).

9. The imperfect past tense to speak of past events or souvenirs (the use of the imperfect/simple past
and present tense)

10. Structure to compare (with adjectives/nouns).

11. The time markers: since/ago; more and more, less and less.

12. The direct and indirect pronouns (summary – double pronouns).

23. a. The infinitive of a verb to make recommendations.

b. Must +infinitive
c. It is a must + infinitive/imperative for rules.

Tenses, pronouns, articles, time markers, prepositions, framing questions, adverbs, adjectives etc.

Part – 2
Translation, putting the sentence in order, vocabulary exercises, match the elements, interdictions.

20 marks

Part – 3 Written Comprehension: 5 marks
Email/letters 5 marks
Dialogue 10 marks
Composition 10 marks

ALLOCATION OF MARKS

A. Theory

1. Grammar 20 marks

2. Translation etc. as mentioned above 20 marks

3. composition/dialogue/emails/letters/written comprehension 30 marks

Total 70 marks

B. Internal Assessment

1. CA (Viva Voce) 10 marks

2. Mid-term test 30 marks

Duration 1 hour

Mid-term test is of two parts of 15 marks each for grammar and written skills/comprehension.

T​ otal 100 marks

Note: T​ he mid-semester theory paper counts for 30 marks which are reduce to 15 marks and the 10
marks for the internal activity is not reduced.; 5 marks are for attendance. So the total from internal
assessment is 10+15+5 = 30 marks.

SEMESTER III & IV (Degree II yr.) – BA/B.Sc./BVC/BSW
Curriculum: C​ orresponds to the A2 level offered by the Alliance Française, the language and
cultural centre of the Ministry of Education, France.

TEXTBOOK: Alter Ego (+2) by Hachette Education.

Marks allotted to each component from chapters given below: a) concepts: 25%. b) Grammar:
25%. c) Vocabulary: 25%. d) Expression: 25%.
Third semester syllabus​: Chapter 1,2,3 and 4 comprising of 12 lessons of the above-mentioned
textbook.

Chapter 1: I have relations: of friendship, neighbourhood and love.

Objective: to speak of one’s relations, define and describe them. Evoking relations and
narrating encounters.

Chapter 2: Towards an active life.

Objective: narrating a university experience, professional experience; in search of employment
and posting a CV/motivation letter; attending a mock interview: the rules to keep in mind
during an actual interview, incorporating changes suggested.
Chapter 3: France as seen by….

Objective: speaking of a country and its citizens, discovering stereotypes; evoking a change in
life and understanding cultural differences as a result of a experience in expatriation; learning
to make a comparison (a city, a way of life, a house etc.)

Chapter 4: Media mania.

A brief study of the different media: press-headlines/columns; bogs, twitter, mobile phone,
television and radio. Reacting to a programme and giving one’s opinion.

Semester – III

Summary of grammar concepts: Semester – III.

1. The relative pronouns: who, whom/that/where/whose, whom; the interrogative pronoun: which

one/ones etc ; the demonstrative pronouns : this one, that one here/there ;the indefinite pronouns : no
one, nothing, someone etc …. ; The possessive pronouns: mine, yours, theirs…… ;

2. The accord of the past participle/the simple past tense and the past imperfect.

3. The time markers: ago, in, during.

4. The reported speech in the present tense.

6. The structures of comparison and the superlative.

7. The past perfect and the subjunctive mood.

8. Adverbs: formation of adverbs both regular and irregular (ending in -emment/-amment)

9. The structure giving advice: imperative, must +infinitive; if + present tense/imperative, it is a must +
subjunctive; if + imperfect to make suggestions/encourage or persuade to.

10. Nominalization/the gender of nouns.

11. Passive voice. 12. The gerund.

13. The accord of the past participle with the direct object.

IV Semester syllabus :​ Chapter 5,6 ,7 (Lesson 2, carnet de Voyage) and ch. 8.

Chapter 5: Hobbies

Objective: film festivals, film reviews, encouraging one to take up a hobby and life in an association;
selecting a tourist criterion to make a reservation, understanding an itinerary.

Chapter 6: The world is ours.

Objective: envisaging the future and our aspirations for it, making suggestions for a better future,
speaking of one’s centres of interests/commitments; speaking of ones’ objectives and presenting a
project; imagining a hypothetical situation. Presenting or summarizing a book (giving an opinion and
justifying one’s choice).

Chapter 7: Alternatives.

Objective: a change of career and life, understanding a biography; ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’
professions.

Chapter 8: Edu-actions

Objective: The French and the environment; reading and initiatives of reading; education and the
measures to avoid health problems.

Semester – IV.

1. Expressing a Wish (To wish that + subjunctive, to hope that + indicative, I would like that/I would like
that + subjunctive)

2. The conditional mood (present) to make a suggestion.

3. Stating of an objective: in order to/for + infinitive, in order that/so that + subjunctive; the contrast
between the subjunctive and indicative moods (opinion, certainty, doubt, wishes, statement).

4. Connectors to express cause and consequence: because, as, indeed, that is why, it is for this reason
that, it is for this that, therefore, so; thanks to, because of.

5. Reported speech in the past.

6. Use of double pronouns.
