BIS DRAGONS FOOTBALLFIELD5

During the summer break of 2023, the BIS campus underwent various enhancements. Our Early Childhood teaching staff designed a new EC playground, offering an appealing area for ageappropriate play and collaboration. Furthermore, the football field has been upgraded with synthetic grass and improved lighting, and it is now open for public rental through gelora.id. In addition to the two major improvements, other various projects were successfully completed during the summer break. These included repainting selected areas of the campus, expanding the staff room to return to the space provided before the pandemic, and partitioning the English Language Support room to create space for the new French classroom. The former French classroom has been repurposed for the EC3 class, allowing room for our new Nursery class. Looking ahead, the Campus Redevelopment Committee (CRC) will be working on a new project for the upcoming 2024 summer holiday, with a focus on prioritizing the science labs. Additionally, there are plans to update our master plan for the school's evolution over the next several years. CAMPUS UPDATES 6

Our new building will provide innovative learning spaces for BIS students including new science labs, additional classrooms, and a community room. NEW BUILDING 7

FUTUREPROJECTSCourts Library Imagine a three-story facility equipped with basketball and badminton courts capable of hosting IISSAC events. A track for cross-country practices and a fitness center could further promote holistic athletic development, providing students with a space for physical wellbeing and sports excellence. Expanding the available space for displays and resources in the library would enhance the learning environment. Incorporating reading nooks and dedicated areas for research would contribute to creating a dynamic and inviting space for students. This design can foster a culture of exploration and academic engagement within the school community. 8

Doesn’t tuition pay for new buildings? LEAVEYOURLEGACYWhat is “Leave Your Legacy”? “Leave Your Legacy” is a community-wide fundraising project to raise money for campus improvements, such as new buildings. BIS, a non-profit organization, allocates tuition and fees to curriculum and operations. Any savings from efficiencies in these areas support campus projects, but this is a slow process taking approximately 10 years to save up for a building. We aim for more frequent changes, so your contributions to "Leave Your Legacy" will help drive these improvements. Our goal Our goal is to raise 3 billion IDR for the current project. Any budget efficiencies at the end of the year will go towards our fundraising goal. We hope all Dragons, including alumni, and BIS partners will be excited to see change around the campus and improved learning facilities for BIS students. “Leave Your Legacy” and be the change Foster research and scientific exploration, critical thinking skills, and transformative education for the next generation of BIS Dragons. Remember the impact BIS had on you? Leave your mark on the school. Donate today and be a part of creating the future of BIS, a future brimming with innovation, opportunity, and endless possibilities. 9

Donations will accumulate and contributors can move through tiers to receive added recognition in our publications (next alumni newsletter and annual report), exclusive access to facility updates, and more.. We hope to build a “Leave Your Legacy” donor recognition wall where donors are recognized with plaques. LEAVEYOURLEGACY10

IB Art was our first experience truly diving into the world of the creative mind. It was here we learnt how to read the story the artist was telling through the canvas, and we’ve been hooked ever since. The satisfaction that comes from uncovering the story behind the hands that crafted, and even more so being the crafter who has their work understood by the eyes of another, is incomparable. But it is no easy task to offer a glimpse of an imaginative vision and to tell a story without words. That’s how we came up with A4, a studio that helps budding creatives express their narrative through innovative means. Having been exposed to the artistry outside, we’ve come to realize the shortcomings of the local art scene and it was through IB and the freedom to express in BIS that allowed us a mindset to appreciate art further than our surroundings. We continued our pursuit of art in higher education with CK completing his journey in Savannah College of Art and Design, graduating Summa Cum Laude receiving the Foundation Honours Show Award, while Jason was granted First Class Honours, winning the J.H Kinoshita Price in the University of Hong Kong. We recognize how challenging IB Art may be, and yet we hold much gratitude for the experience that cultivated our eyes and our skills. Furthermore, we have continued to pursue growth after university, as CK currently works as an illustrator and graphic designer in an American design company, handling small-scale clients to large establishments fulfilling their design needs that include storybook illustrations to company brand profiles, while Jason continues architectural research in The University of Hong Kong, developing future architecture and health solutions to provide better preparation in combatting airborne viruses for dense public housing complexes. As a lifelong student of art, we hope to pass on the knowledge we have harvested through our years beyond BIS, while not forgetting to give back to where we started and mentor the students we once were, encouraging them to overcome their fears and think beyond the norm by tapping into the limitless ends of their creativity in expressing themselves while forging a preparedness for what comes after. My time at BIS I have been a student at BIS for 15 years (from EC-1 all the way to Grade 12). My time at BIS has played a crucial role in shaping me into the person I am today. I can still vividly picture the memories of playing for the IISSAC basketball team, where I learned about teamwork and the power of pursuing one’s passion; spending late nights studying after basketball practice, where I learned about discipline and balancing priorities; going on outreach trips with friends across different grades, where I made lifelong friends who I’m still close with to this day; playing guitar at talent shows and speaking at MUN and TEDx conferences, where I learned to overcome stage fright and fear of public speaking; and, of course, the two grueling but extremely rewarding years of the IBDP in Grades 11 and 12, where I learned about grit and developed intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills – skills that I still use to this day. Further Education and Career Journey After BIS After graduating from BIS in 2015, I subsequently received my B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan and my M.S.Ed. in Learning Sciences and Technologies from the University of Pennsylvania. In terms of my professional accomplishments, I started my career as a Software Engineer at Citi in their tech headquarters in Dallas, TX, where I helped build their investing and trading fintech products and even got the chance to present my work to the CIO of Citi. Currently, I am an Engineering Program Manager at Apple in their headquarters in Cupertino, CA, where I work on Apple’s Education and Enterprise products. Specifically, my team is responsible for Apple’s Schoolwork app as well as Apple’s Business Essentials app. One of the highlights from my time at Apple so far has been meeting the CEO Tim Cook in person and attending a talk where he shared some valuable life lessons and advice. I still think it’s surreal that a small-town boy from Bandung could attend some of the best universities in the world and work at Apple in their headquarters in Cupertino. But I suppose I’m proof that BIS students can make it in the big leagues and compete against the best and brightest in the world. BIS really equipped me with the skills I needed to succeed both academically and professionally. Passion Projects I love mentoring other students and helping them succeed. If you would like to connect and ask about academic and/or career advice, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I’m Cyrus Tanade, a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow at Duke University. I am currently working at the intersection of high-performance computing, physics based modeling, and machine learning to address grand challenges in cardiovascular medicine. Using some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers and cloud resources with collaborations from Amazon and Microsoft, I focus on establishing digital twins for coronary arteries. These personalized models, constructed from medical images and 3D blood flow simulations, help diagnose and treat coronary disease, a leading global cause of death. My work includes developing models to diagnose coronary disease [1, 2], performing virtual surgery using machine learning and virtual reality, and enabling the first longitudinal digital twins. What’s surprising is that current leading models have only computed less than a minute of 3D blood flow, yet we’ve already learned a lot about the disease and its treatment. Imagine how much more we can discover and how many lives we can save by monitoring 3D blood flow over months to years. Using the best technology available, it would take hundreds of years for the world’s fastest supercomputer to compute just one day of 3D blood flow. To address this challenge, I created an algorithm that extends our ability to simulate biological time efficiently. With my lab at Duke, we shattered records by simulating 4.5 million heartbeats (over six weeks) in just 48 hours using accessible cloud resources [3]. Our breakthrough not only sets new records but also makes 3D blood flow simulations accessible for clinical use, marking just the beginning of what I hope is a transformative journey in healthcare. Besides coronary modeling, I have also worked on developing simulations for epidemiological (Ebola [4] and COVID-19 [5]) and cancer cell growth applications [6, 7]). My interest in solving biomedical problems started at BIS. Through support from the BIS community, I volunteered at Pak Suwardi’s clinic and was immediately exposed to many technological gaps in healthcare. I was given the freedom to explore my interests in the medical space in high school – even getting permission to skip class a few times and shadow a renowned Indonesian neurosurgeon performing temporal craniotomies. One thing I will always remember about BIS is the community and support from teachers. I’ve had the privilege of having a long list of incredible teachers guiding me all the way 1 from EC1 to high school, and they, in no small part, shaped the researcher I am today. Reflecting on my time at BIS, I have nothing but positive things to share about how the BIS community has supported me in my personal, academic, and professional journey. After graduation, I relocated to California, earning a Bachelor’s in Economics from UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) and a Master’s in Business Analytics from USC (Fight On!). I am now based in Los Angeles, working as a data consultant for Artefact, a French company. In this role, I collaborate with global companies such as L’Oreal and Tiffany & Co., helping them leverage data science and AI to advance their organizations. The international environment at BIS was instrumental in preparing me to work effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. My interest in economics was sparked by the engaging economics classes at BIS, which led me to data science and shaped my current career path. Moreover, the IB program at BIS provided an excellent foundation for my studies at UC Berkeley. After my education at BIS, I found myself well-prepared for my academic journey. Exposure to college-level material, hands-on lab experiences, and extensive essay/report writing at BIS equipped me with vital tools for academic success. Writing my Extended Essay at BIS built the confidence I needed to tackle my honors thesis at university, a daunting task that many of my peers did not dare to attempt. I was even assisting friends in the pre-medical track with their biology courses, thanks to the knowledge I gained at BIS. Lastly, the lessons in leadership and teamwork I learned through BIS athletic activities have been invaluable in my personal growth. I hold dear all the memories, the ups and downs, shared with great coaches and teammates during my years. Looking back, I realize how lucky I was to have such enriching experiences at BIS, experiences that have shaped who I am today and continue to influence my journey. In an ambitious initiative, BIS created the Grade 9 and 10 MYP Design - Stitch and Stir course this year. Embracing the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards, the class embarked on a project, weaving together dreams, world heritage, fashion, and legacy. The goal was to establish a unique BIS Batik Story, culminating in its launch on Batik Day, October 2nd. The class used extensive research, interviews, polls, and surveys, collaborating with industry leaders to create their batik fabrics. Guided by the symbolic language of Batik, they deciphered meanings, built motives, and lived through legends. In true Dragon fashion, Design Stitch and Stir sought the community’s perspective to choose their favorite batik symbols. The Koi pond, the House symbols, and the West Javanese Megamendung were amongst the most popular! Following tight timelines and community engagement, Valerie Sastrasumita, a Grade 9 graphic designer, crafted the distinctive BIS Batik stamp design. With the expertise of Batik specialists, the custom-made stamp was brought to life, featuring carefully communityselected color palettes. This journey by the Design Stitch and Stir class and the whole BIS community marks a historic moment, shaping the BIS Batik Story. We anticipate upcoming highlights like the copper stamp, printed fabric, graduation sashes, custom merchandise, and the possibility of a stained glass fresco. Our imagination is the limit, and the future is ours to explore! DRAGON UPDATES Our BIS Batik Story 22
