When Parisian-born Frederic Schumacher
arrived in New York and founded his business in address (now Park Avenue South) was the second corporate headquarters.
1889, the metropolis was booming. Gilded Age
manses sprouted along Fifth Avenue and
Vanderbilts and Astors competed with each
other to fill them with the finest things money
could buy. The sophisticated Schumacher was a
keen distiller of popular taste. The fabrics he
imported were the most refined that Europe could
offer: brocades and damasks designed for
2 Catherine the Great; velvets fit for Louis XV. His
client list soon included top-shelf talent like
Stanford White. Schumacher fabrics lined walls
at the Breakers and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
We’ve kept our finger on the pulse of fashion
ever since, melding the best Old World traditions
with ever evolving modern tastes. At the turn of
the century, Schumacher was an early adopter
of Art Nouveau. In 1925, the firm exhibited at the
groundbreaking Exposition Internationale des Arts
Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes and was among
the first to introduce Art Deco textiles to America.
Since then, our designs have been woven into the
fabric of American culture—Schumacher textiles
and wallcoverings hang in historic residences like
the White House and have had supporting roles
in countless TV series and films, from I Love Lucy
to Gone With the Wind and The Age of Innocence.

Celebrating 125 Years
We’ve spent the last 125 years cultivating the
highest forms of beauty. To pay tribute to that
extraordinary heritage, we’ve mined our archives
to pull together a best hits roundup of our most
prized fabrics and wallpapers. Some precisely
mirror the documents on which they’re based,
while others are loose interpretations reimagined
for our current age: a hand-drawn toile is
modeled after an original 18th-century design;
a bejeweled tape takes its inspiration from
an antique batik. The patterns punctuate our
rich timeline and have been lavished with
our trademark attention to detail and quality.
