BI SEKOLAH MENENGAH

BI SEKOLAH MENENGAH

9 After waiting for six hours, my friends and I were beginning to lose hope. There were
only two planes left! We did not feel angry as there was nothing anyone could do. Suddenly, 40
we heard someone yelling to quickly give them our passports. The person was the owner of
Nest Hotel in Bhimsan. It was where we had been staying the whole time. My friends and I
hurriedly handed over our documents. After waiting anxiously for 10 minutes, he came back
out to the gate and told us that our seats were confirmed.

10 At noon that day, an official came out and read out the new lists. Thankfully our names 45
were called. We were so glad! My friends and I thanked our hotel owner and also our humble
guide for doing so much for us. We were indeed lucky to have met such wonderful locals.

11 Just before I boarded the plane, I took one last look behind me. I felt a little tearful,
just like I did when I first arrived and witnessed the mountain for the first time. My heart felt
full. I had gained enough experiences and lessons that would last me a lifetime.

PART 4
Question 27 to 32
You are going to read an article about climate change. Six sentences have been removed from
the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are
two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The effects of climate change have become a constant concern to scientists and many

individuals around the world. Numerous studies have been carried out and are still being carried

out to investigate the changes that have taken place in our environment. 27

In Malaysia for instance, the arrival of the north-east monsoon will usually bring heavy

rainfalls to states in the east coast of the peninsular, such as Kelantan and Terengganu. However,

this is no longer the case now. 28 There is a general expectation that with an

increase in our annual rainfall, the situation would worsen as more areas in Malaysia would

become subjects to floods.29

Despite the projected heavier rainfall, our country is also at risk of reduced rainfall and

prolonged droughts due to an expected increase in temperature and changes in precipitation.

30 This rise in temperature will have a negative impact on crop yields. Agricultural

activities, such as rubber and oil palm growing, and rice cultivation, just to name a few, will also

be negatively affected.

Climate changes would also affect our coastal areas. As sea levels rise at the rate of 0.9

cm per year, coastal areas are expected to submerge, causing the loss of mangrove trees. This

rise will impede drainage and cause more frequent flooding of coastal areas.

33 This is caused by the increased wave actions caused by the rise in sea levels.
Other impacts are submergence of coral, coral breaking, and loss of fisheries resources. More

detrimental effects will become apparent over the next two or three decades and these are going

to affect both humans and animals alike.

32 Still, there are some that are too arrogant and selfish and refuse to do so.

Even so, as individuals, we can do our parts to protect the Earth for future generations.

103

A Another observable effect is shoreline erosions.
B As a result, this would bring about an increased destruction of property,

infrastructure and livelihood.
C The rise of about 1 to 1.5°C is expected for all regions in the peninsular.
D There have been lots of natural disasters happening around the world.
E Many countries around the world are taking measures to control activities that

contribute to climate change.
F These studies also provide insights on the impending disasters that we could be

facing due to climate change.
G Other states such as Perlis and Kedah, on the west coast, have also been listed as

flood prone areas.
H Tsunamis cause flood in the nearby coastal areas.
