INTRODUCTION

Victoria Institution is the oldest secondary school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was a memorial school partly funded by public
subscription intended for the erection of a permanent memorial to commemorate the Golden Jublee of Queen Victoria in 1887. The
establishment of the school was further supported by financial contributions from the Sultan and government of Selangor, prominent
Kuala Lumpur residents and the general public. The school reverted to its original name (instead of SMK Victoria) in February 2009
after being granted approval, in recognition of its declaration as a national heritage. The Victoria Institution is a secondary school for
male students only from Form 1 to 5. Female students are accepted for Form 6 (Lower and Upper). The school is widely known as
V.I. and a student of the Victoria Institution is known as a Victorian. The VI performs well in academic fields and sports at secondary
school level in Malaysia and considered one of the best non-residential schools in Malaysia. In 2007, VI was named as Cluster School
of Excellence by the Minister of Malaysian Ministry of Education, Hishamuddin Hussein.

Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur, building which now had been renamed as Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in the heart of old Kuala Lumpur town where the
school was first established in 1893. As the school grew over the decades, its environment also grew and
ACCESSION NO: changed, mirroring the parallel growth of Kuala Lumpur. After the government approved the
2001/0052732W establishment of the V.I., eight acres of land on the left bank of the Klang River were set aside. The
proposed site was bounded on three sides by the river and by the southern part of High Street which
meets the Klang River near a large engineering complex. There were no brick buildings on the site on
that time. There was a police station in High Street facing the site of the school. The street beside it was
aptly named Station Street. The other side of the river was relatively undeveloped and mostly Europeans
live there. The main road running beside the railway line called Gombak Road which now had been
renamed as Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin. The construction began in 1893 of two buildings, one of the
school block known as Block 1 and the other a large bungalow for the Headmaster. The buildings were
ready for occupation in July 1894. Block 1 had two floors, the ground floor being mainly of brick while
the upper part of the building was largely timber. The style was Gothic. There were two concentric walls
of arches on the ground floor. A distinctive spire on its roof allowed natural ventilation into the large
upper floor school room. Although the school fronted High Street, its main entrance was actually on the
north side. Above this entrance was a gable on which were mounted the royal coat of arms and the date
of the School's foundation 1893. A long curving porch covered the entrance steps.

built beside Block 3. It looked like a Roman temple with tall columns, two at the front and back
and four on each side. In 1909, Block 4 was constructed about 50 meters across the field behind
Block 1. This was for the High School and consisted of three classrooms on the ground floor. It
housed the School Hall on the first floor. In 1921, a temporary building was set up to house
three more classrooms. Five years later another one-storey building was erected to relieve the
pressure for classroom space.

CHAPTER 2
TRADITIONS AND HERITAGE

fim.uitm.edu.my 10

TRADITIONS AND HERITAGE

The Victoria Institution (VI) has been founded. Three businessmen came up with the idea of
forming an English school in Kuala Lumpur, with the support of the then British resident of
Selangor as well as Sultan Abdul Samad. It was their foresight and dedication which led to the
school's founding. Over the years, many a young man has passed through our school. Regardless
of one’s stature in life, a lot of us, if not all, credit Victoria Institution for character-building and
instilling in us a deep sense of value. Students who join the school are identified as Victorians.
It's almost like a badge that we're wearing with honor. But it's a lot more than a badge. There is a
sense of pride, dignity and gratitude in the Victorian ranks. There is unquestionably something
different about the school. Men in the 40s and 50s, and even some in the 80s, continue to
identify themselves as Victorians today.

FIGURE 11: The Victoria Institution was very fortunate in securing the right man to be its first Headmaster.
Victoria Institution. Photographing Teachers with the First Teacher, Mr. B.E. Shaw. As the first Headmaster of V.I., Mr. Bennett Eyre Shaw was the person who has laid the
educational foundation and created a tradition for Victoria Institution, and to plan and build a
ACCESSION NO: school, which has always been in the forefront of educational progress in Malaya. Bennett Shaw
2001/0048779W was a man of strong character, lofty ideals and great practical gifts. Few individuals have done
so much for this country as did Bennett Shaw. To the Victoria Institution of today, he remains a
legendary figure. Bennett Shaw planned an education for life and not merely for examination;
his main aim was to produce good citizens. So without neglecting academic standards, he
introduced and developed an amazing variety of school activities designed to give a balanced
education. The first V.I. Sports Day was held in 1898. When Mr. Shaw retired in 1922, after 28
years’ successful labour there were five blocks of school buildings housing a total of 1,000
students in classes from Primary to School Certificate.

fim.uitm.edu.my 12

During the war, the books, equipment, laboratory apparatus, and in fact almost everything except FIGURE 12:
the building, were lost or destroyed. The Japanese in Malaya signed the document of surrender The document about request for bell of H.M.S. ''Malaya'' For
in the School Hall on 12th September, 1945, and the photos of the historic occasion are a proud
possession of the school. The Victoria Institution carried on after the war for a few months in Victoria Institution, K.L
Batu Road School and then Maxwell Road School, returning to its proper home in September ACCESSION NO:
1946. 1957/0622757W

Two highlights of post-war history can be mentioned. First, the watch bell of H.M.S. Malaya, a 13
battleship built in 1913 at a cost $25,000,000 paid by the people of Malaya, was given to the
school. It was formally presented on the second anniversary of Malaya Victory Day, 12th
September, 1947, and was received by His Excellency Sir Edward Gent. It now hangs high
above the entrance porch of the school. Second, in 1949, the Rt. Hon. Mr. Anthony Eden, at
present Britain’s Foreign Secretary, opened the new school library which has room for 10,000
books and seating accommodation for over 80 boys, and also unveiled the War Memorial
dedicated to masters and old boys who laid down their lives in the two World Wars. The officials
visits to the school of Mr. Ivor Thomas in 1946, Mr. James Griffiths in 1950, and of Sir Gerald
and Lady Templer in 1953 emphasise the esteem in which the school is held.

fim.uitm.edu.my

The school is full of history and tradition. Many of these traditions have lasted over a great FIGURE 13:
number of years. Most of them still remember the words to the school song and proudly sing it The High Commissioner, Sir Edward Gent and Rear Admiral H.M.S Malaya, were

The V.I. is definitely not the oldest school in Malaysia, it carries the distinction of being home to ACCESSION NO:

Group in the country, the First Kuala Lumpur Scout Troop, originally known as the First
Selangor Scout Troop. It was also one of the first few schools to have a Prefects Board and a
School Magazine. Pretty amazing really when you consider that there are a few schools in
existence that are quite a number of years older than the VI. The official name of the Second
Kuala Lumpur Scout Troop today is the Victoria Scout Group.

the way back to 1909. It is also the oldest marching band in the whole of Southeast Asia.
Besides VICCB, Klang High School Cadet Band and St John’s Naval Cadet Band were also 16
amongst the earliest bands formed in this country. Besides VICCB, a number of other local
marching bands have also made our nation proud in the recent years. In 2014, St. John’s Naval
Cadet Band represented Malaysia at the 30th Grand Prix Marching Band (GPMB) in Jakarta,
where they performed in front of Indonesia’s top marching bands. On top of that, last year Saint
Joseph Show Marching Band (SJSMB) from Kuching, Sarawak triumphed as champions in the
US Band Association’s Yamaha Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The band remarkably
bagged all of the awards for best colour guard, music, overall effect, percussion and visual for
their drill show.

Traditional glories of the Victoria Institution Cadet Corps Band (VICCB) at the international
stage continue to shine with the recent success of the 2009 World Champion Championship at
San Felice Sul Penaro, Modena, Italy.

status, Shafie said that the school had been chosen to meet the criteria of the 2005
National Heritage Act. Shafie, who is an alumnus of the school, said the VI played a role
in the country's history when it was used as the administrative headquarters by the
invading Japanese army during the Second World War. The school, he said, was also the
first English secondary school in the country, was prestigious and had produced important
personalities from Sultans, leaders, ministers, corporate figures, politicians to sports
luminaries and professionals. He said the school was the first in Southeast Asia to have
cadet corps and a school band. Shafie called for the school's heritage to be conserved as
each characteristic "be it a wall, a window, balcony, roof, tower or its field has its own
story."

THE OLD VICTORIA INSTITUTION In 2003 the City fathers, in an inspired and laudable
move, initiated restoration of the building to its original
late nineteenth century state. No architectural plans
could be found but archaeological excavations on the
site and also around and inside the building, helped the
architect make some conclusions. Today the building,
with its latest monicker at Taman Budaya is a shining
example of Kuala Lumpur's architectural legacy. Only
two objects remain to be added back to complete the
transformation to the original building which the Royal
crest and the date "1893" on the North facade of the
building.

SCOUTING GREATS

At the Victoria Institution, there are many great people who had achieved more high achievers among the other. There are many V.I. scholars amongst the
scouts including the first Lewis Scholar Khoo Choong Keow, and many Treacher and Rodger Scholars. Other Queen’s Scholars were Rodney Lam of the
Second Selangor Group and Dr Tharmaratnam, a King Scout. Many scouts too, have entered prestigious universities like Cambridge, Oxford and M.I.T.
Others have succeeded in the corporate world like 2nd KL King Scouts, Ashok Kumar and Wong Siew Hai. To compile a list that does justice to all
achievements would indeed require a comprehensive compendium,
and this list is necessarily selective, though hopefully not irrationally
so. We can envisage that in due course, this list will certainly have
to be expanded especially as many scouts of the 1970’s, 1980’s and so
on will make their mark.

Victoria Institution is well known for its great achievements at that time. It can be safely said that the Victoria
Institution once blazed an educational trail for other Malaysian schools to follow. Science had actually been Source from:

of the twentieth century but was discontinued in 1905 by R. J. Wilkinson, the famous compiler of the Malay-
English dictionary and Inspector of Schools for the FMS. However, soon after the school moved to its present
premises in 1929, it became the first school in the Federated Malay States to attempt to make science a part of
every pupil's general education. In fact, when the present school building was built, a whole wing occupying
about a quarter of the school was set aside for science, and in 1929 a start was made to furnish and equip this
Science Wing. The original intention was to teach only physics and chemistry, but early in 1930, when 31-year-
old Frederick Daniel arrived at the V.I. on transfer from the West Indies, he suggested that it would be wrong to
confine science teaching to these corners of the scientific field and insisted that every boy in the school should
be given a course of general science covering the whole field of pure science that prepared boys for life, rather
than for scientific degrees or careers.

grown the main economic and food crops of the country. Trees and bushes of economic importance were
planted around the sides, and all the plants were labelled with their botanical names, their english names, and
their local vernacular names. Plenty of space was left round the beds for pupils to walk about. Climbing plants
were grown over archways, and small flower beds and flowering shrubs supplied many of the flowers studied in
science lessons. A large concrete sundial also found a place in the unshaded centre of the garden. A thatched
served for raising young plants, and compost heaps were maintained in a shady corner. There was a dovecote
with a small flock of pigeons, and also a concrete, about a foot deep and surrounded by a wire netting
enclosure. Local fish were kept in this pond to control mosquito breeding, and a selection of water-plants was
also grown, some floating on the surface and others rooted in submerged pots of soil. Rabbits and guinea pigs,
however, were kept in small, portable wire-netting enclosures and wooden hutches, raised off the ground, which
could be closed up at night.

needy pupils of the schools. It was felt that no VI student should be unable to pursue his or her studies diligently 27
because of want. The objective is valid until today. The VIOBA was founded with the premise that there should be
an association for ex-students where they can maintain the VI Spirit. The first clubhouse was located in a shop lot at
17 Rodger Street. The spacious building was provide by towkay Yap Fatt Yew, who incidentally was not an old boy.
In the quest to set up VIOBA, there are many challenges to be meet. For example, in 1940 one efforts have been
made to build appropriate buildings in the schoolyard. In order to build the building, a small Committee was formed
which was chaired by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Throughout the process has been a daunting task for obtaining the
necessary permits and funds. In 2000 The VIOBA Foundation under the guidance of Dato’ Jaffar Indot, restores the
VI Clock tower. The VIOBA official website is launched to welcome the new millennium.

S. RAJATRANAM, FORMER DEPUTY OF PRIME MINISTER FIGURE 41
OF SINGAPORE S. rajatranam
Source from:
S. Rajaratnam was born in 1915 in Jaffna, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and was raised in Seremban, Malaysia, where his father http://viweb.school/
rose from being a supervisor of rubber estates to a plantation owner. He attended the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus for six
months and was transferred to St Paul's, a boys' school. He continued his education in the prestigious Victoria Institution in 33
Kuala Lumpur and then in Raffles Institution, Singapore. In 1937, He went to King's College, London, to pursue a law degree.
There he received his political awakening, became fashionably anti-imperial, anti-British, joined the socialist Left Book Club
and became a Marxist. The lack of communication between London and Malaya during the Second World War meant that
Rajaratnam could no longer receive money from his father to continue his education. He therefore turned to journalism to
earn a living, never returning to university to complete his degree. On his return to Singapore in 1948, he joined the Malayan
Tribune. In 1950, he was appointed Associate Editor of the Singapore Standard and held that post for four years. He then
worked for The Straits Times till 1959. He was the secretary of the Malayan Indian Congress and a founder member of the
Singapore Union of Journalists. His writing was clearly of the Left and anti-British, but at the same time he was not for the
Communists.
