M ichael Ashkenazi (Ph.D. Anthropology, Yale 1983) has taught
anthropology in several countries. He is the author and editor of
numerous articles and several books, including Matsuri: Festivals of
a Japanese Town (University of Hawaii Press), and coauthor of The Essence of
