JOHN WATERS

Live on stage

The Luckman Theatre
Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 8:00 PM

$40 | $50 | $60

A celebrated filmmaker, director and writer, John Waters has built a
reputation for shocking his audiences. Many of the cult legend’s films
satirize suburban America as well as many social conventions and attitudes.
He started out making short experimental films in the 1960s, often using
friends as actors and holding renegade, underground showings in offbeat
locales. Roman Candles (1966), one of his early works, marked the first
time Waters worked with Divine, the larger-than-life drag queen now
synonymous with Waters’ body of work.

Turning to feature films,Waters made Mondo Trasho (1969), Pink Flamingos
(1972), Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), Serial Mom (1994), Pecker (1998)
and Cecil B. Demented (2000).

Waters has authored several books, including Shock Value: A Tasteful Book
about Bad Taste (1981), Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters (1983),
Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America (2015), and most recently
Make Trouble (2017). He also had a traveling exhibit of his photography
called Change of Life, which featured still images from some of his early
films.

Jonh Waters comes to the Luckman to share his unique brand of wit,
humor, and wisdom.

LUCKMANPLUS

Our commitment to the community. We
believe that an education that excludes the

arts is an impoverished one.
Activities that foster artistic enrichment.

The LuckmanPlus program bridges participants with the professional
arts. The Luckman actively brings art to the forefront of personal
enrichment through unique community events and once-in-a-
lifetime art engagement opportunities with artists from around the
corner and around the world.
Many Luckman presentations include family-friendly events open
to the community: master classes, symposia, workshops, artist talks,
and screenings.
Events are added throughout the season. Consult ourwebsite regularly

ARTIST TALKS

Up-close and personal discussions with
living legends and artistic icons. Your
opportunity to engage with artists from

around the world.
A rare opportunity to learn from legends.

Artist talks at the Luckman offer rare opportunities to delve deeper
into the content of our programming, bringing the art closer to
the audience. This exchange and interaction promotes a more
encompassing experience and, we hope, a better appreciation for the
artistic process.
Visiting artists engage audience members in question and answer
sessions that cover a wide scope of topics. These unique discussions
allow patrons to interact with musicians, dancers, singers, and visual
artists in an open setting.
For some presentations, symposium panels consisting of artists and
experts will engage in informative discussions on topics relating to
the evening’s performance or exhibit.

MASTER CLASSES

Interactive and participatory, each master class welcomes people
of all ages and all experience levels to immerse themselves in the
artistic process in a safe and inviting setting under the direction of a
master artist.
Classes cover a wide range of topics from music performance, to
dance technique, to color theory. Master classes are conducted by
visiting artists and are offered in conjunction with our performances
and exhibits.

WORKSHOPS

Our workshops engage participants in the creative process through
the visual arts. We believe there is a distinct creative spirit in each
of us that nourishes our humanity and enriches our community and
society.
This LuckmanPlus endeavor fosters a creative culture by encouraging
people of all backgrounds and skill levels to explore, participate, and
experiment with the visual arts before select presentations.
Guided by professional artists, each workshop will complement the
evening’s performance. We encourage you and the entire family to
arrive early to experience these interactive sessions.
