A Message from the Class Speaker...

Dear Class of 2022,

There is no doubt that we are a very special and powerful LopeKzaSralnachez
class! I hope you are very proud of yourself and all your
accomplishments. Whether you are aware of it or not,
your hard work has made a tremendous change for all
Latinx in this country. To put it into perspective, 24% of
Latinx adults in the United States had an associate degree
or higher as of 2019. This was the highest number
recorded so far, but 2021 saw a significant decrease due
to the obstacles posed by the ongoing pandemic. If you
are graduating today, I applaud you for beating the odds.
You completed your degree despite being in the midst of
a global pandemic because your dreams are stronger
than any obstacle you might encounter. There is no doubt
that your college experience was disrupted, uncertain,
and stressful… but these challenges only made you
unstoppable. aybe you had to take a semester off to help
your family, maybe you had to get a second job to pay for
your tuition, maybe you are a first generation student and
at times you felt lost, maybe you don’t have a family or a

support system, maybe you had to juggle parenthood and student life at the same time, maybe you struggled with
mental or physical health, maybe you dealt with hunger, homelessness, or the aftermath of the pandemic… so many
maybes…but what is certain is that you are here now. In this very moment you represent your family, your culture,
and your roots. You are transforming higher education and institutions that are not designed for students like us.
As you embark on your new journey, I hope you take with you the experiences and skills you learned at USC. Be
humble and remember that nobody succeeds without the help of others. Always give back to the community you
came from and be light to everyone around you. Keep in mind the work you have done to get to where you are.
Think of the people in your family who were not given the human right to an education. You are now here getting
your degree despite statistics that show you are supposed to fail. You are living proof that we can change that
statistic. Whatever direction you take, proudly carry your culture and academia everywhere you go.
I was once just a little Mexican girl whose first field trip in this country was at USC. When my brown little eyes saw
this school for the first time, I knew this is where I would be one day. Now, I am the only first generation Mexican
woman graduating in my electrical engineering master’s program. No obstacle is bigger than your dreams, despite
your economic status, legal status, gender, or race. You are invincible and an example that miracles are real. Your
story shows the magnitude of the power that our people have. Go out there and continue following your dreams!

Congratulations Class of 2022! ¡Felicidades, si se puede!

A Message from the Master of Ceremonies...

Class of 2022, welcome to your graduation! Congratulations Fabian Alvarez
on accomplishing these past few years of hard work and
dedication to your education, especially during these
unprecedented times. It gives me great pleasure and honor
to welcome all of you to the 42nd annual Latinx Graduation
Ceremony!
This journey could not have been possible without
mentioning a few honorary members in my own support
system. Quisera primeramente agredecer a mis padres
would also like to thank my friends, colleagues,
supervisors and professors for your help throughout my
graduate educational experience. I would not be the
professional I am today without your listening ear and
guidance. Thank you.

As we look back at our educational experience at USC, what will you remember? The struggles of navigating your
educational experience as a 1st generation student, the accomplishments and knowledge you have earned
throughout the countless hours of readings or how about your support system that uplifted you during these
unprecedented times? We could not have achieved what we have achieved this evening alone. Our ancestors
have paved the way with each generation for us to celebrate our graduation this evening.
It is during these difficult times that I continuously remind myself of the words of a wise man that once told me,
what matters is not what you have been through, what matters most is the image you hold of yourself of who
you want to become. Who we are now is product of the experiences each one of us has been through and more
importantly, what we do with our experience as students from USC is up to us. So, graduating class of 2022,
what do you want your future self to look like? What do you need in the present to make it happen? Who can
best help you achieve that for yourself? Hold that image of yourself and no matter what life obstacles come
across your path remember, Fight on Class of 2022!

Coming back from virtual learning was definitely an ad¡ustment for
the center and our students. I was fortunate to have seen students
ad¡ust to the new norm and create a community amongst each other.

It has been fulfilling to support our Latinx as they navigate USC
through our mental health services and academic and professional
development opportunities. Working for La CASA also provided me

with the opportunity to collaborate with other centers in the SEIP
team÷ which allowed me to further learn about different identities and

how they also navigate USC. This has empowered me to be
intentional in creating a space for all intersecting identities and honor

that Latinx diaspora. Por siempre agradecidaù Fight onù

La CASA was such a great experience for me because I
was able to build community for my fellow Latinx

students and peers. I was also able to contribute to the
research at La CASA that led to some amaâing

collaborations and programming with other centers in
SEIP. I loved working here and I am very thankful to have

met such wonderful peopleù I'll miss everyoneù

RITA RUIZ
SPRING 2019 - Summer 2019
Master of Public AdministrATION

In spring 2019, I attended a welcome event at LA Casa and had an
overwhelming feeling of belonging. I was a Spring admit transfer, first-

generation student and felt overwhelmed with USC's fast-paced
environment. Imposter syndrome was real, but LA Casa provided

academic resources, scholarship/grant information, networking
events with other cultural centers, mental health resources, and
ample support. I learned the power to come out of my comfort zone
and network with visitors, hosts, and students who would attend the

events and workshops LA Casa hosted.

As a transfer and first generation student, USC was anything but easy. It
wasn’t until I discovered La CASA where I truly began to grow and feel
welcomed. I am grateful for the eÜperiences I’ve had working at La CASA,
from the great laughs with my colleagues, to the motivation and loving
check in’s with Leti. The center was much more than my home, it was my
survival on campus and allowed me to connect and thrive, I began to

become a Tro¡an. Thank you Leti, Naddia, Greedly, and Damarea for
showing me the power of student activism and kindness as a leader. I can

not thank you all enough, and the people I’ve met through the center

La CASA was my home away from homeù This was the best
first job anyone could ever ask for. Special shoutout to Leti
who made the space engaging and collaborative for all the

student workers and everyone else who came to La CASA. I
was able to break out of my shell and make so many friends

and memories thanks to La CASA.

Carla Segura I began working at La CASA in my first semester on campus and would
Spring 2019 - Fall 2020 describe the center as a "home away from home," filled with amaâing
people, both staff and students that I have been fortunate to meet.

Thank you Leti for creating a warm, welcoming environment, for being
someone I can depend on and for genuinely caring for students. Thank
you Vivian De Anda Plascencia for being the best co-worker, everyday I

looked forward to working with you, creating memories along the way
and shoutout Jen and Matt, for their love and support. Walking into the
center, knowing I had a support system eased my transition into USC, it

also introduced me to on-campus resources and I was able to gain
some best friends and sisters along the way --- Hermanas Unidas and

Sigma Lambda Gamma €3. Through the center, I was able to
contribute to the LatinÜ community and I look forward to all the great

things La CASA will continue to do.
