The Unicorn
In medieval bestiaries, the
unicorn is represented as a
regular horse with a horn, as
opposed to the white,
majestic creatures they are
known as today.
In some
bestiaries, the
unicorn is
described to be
the same size
as a goat.
The unicorn
symbolizes
Jesus Christ. Its
horn is said to
signify the
Father and the
Son being one.
In some bestiaries, the small size of
the Unicorn is representative of
Christ's body becoming human. The
unicorn is swift, said to have
outsmarted kings, officials, and
mankind itself. This is reminiscent of
how Christ defied human belief by
raising from the dead.
Interestingly, the unicorn is
considered a beautiful, but
insignificant creature in medieval
bestiaries. Today, however, we
see the unicorn as a magnificent
creature. Medieval Bestiaries were
most likely intending to present
the unicorn as similar to Christ --
magnificent in the sense that he
was God, but insignificant in the
sense that he was human.
