ABOUT US The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary organization of students from schools, colleges, and universities and was founded on September 24, 1969. NSS aims to develop students' personalities through community service. After two years of lockdown, the session 2022–2023 was the first in which NSS completely operated in offline mode. This year's main theme was to serve all segments of society. Team SAMARPAN (NSS-SACE) began many new and unique activities this academic year. Few of them were the Feed the Stray campaign, which was one of NSS's and most of SACE's successful monthly campaigns. A visit to the War Memorial and a visit to Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya was organized to honor our brave soldiers and our country. Team SAMARPAN (NSS-SACE) collaborated with various NGOs and organizations to broaden the scope of service. On the occasion of Rashtriya Poshan Maah, a "NSS Drawing and Essay Competition" was held in collaboration with the Gyandeep Growth Foundation. In collaboration with IPCA (Indian Pollution Control Association), a plastic recycling drive was also held. Team SAMARPAN (NSS-SACE) organized a cleanliness drive around the college and PVR Saket area to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. A winter clothing distribution drive was organized to assist those in need in surviving the bone-chilling winters. A group discussion on the topic "Air Pollution and Awareness" was held under the "Mission Life" initiative. The team's events were in keeping with the NSS's motto, "Not Me But You," which emphasizes the value of social service. The path chosen by Team SAMARPAN (NSS-SACE) may be difficult, but it will lead to an unforgettable journey. As the saying goes, "The longest and toughest journeys are normally the most rewarding".

The word "SANKALP" connotes an intense yearning and a sombre resolve to achieve the impossibly difficult. We are thrilled to share with you the 4th issue of Sankalp, our acclaimed newsletter. This newsletter offers a glimpse into the exciting journey we have had as members of the NSS unit at Sri Aurobindo College (Evening), which exemplifies the NSS spirit and adheres to the NSS slogan, "Not Me But You," giving a look into the thrilling experience we have had through this newsletter. A common and very impactful saying goes, "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." The proverb emphasises the value of group cohesiveness, cooperation, and selflessness. At NSS, we've developed as a team while also growing as individuals, both on personal and professional fronts, all while simultaneously doing the best possible to improve society. We have been inspired to pursue a path of personal development by the honesty, selflessness, and bravery ideals that NSS has taught us. Our volunteers enthusiastically and fervently participated in the physical activities and events of our team, which were launched after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic. Every one of our team's numerous initiatives, from a distribution campaign for clothes to instructive outings to historic sites, has been a success only because of the commitment and active participation of our volunteers. Every participant experienced something new as a result of the activities, including a sense of love and care, selflessness, the realisation that "giving is more enjoyable than getting," and a real understanding of what the phrase "Not Me But You" really means. Thanks to our involvement in NSS, we have come to realise that we hold the power to bring happiness to others and that we have the strength to bring about changes in society, even if they are small ones, as every drop counts. We realise the importance of most miniscule acts of kindness and selflessness, and we feel amazed by their eloquent impact on society. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every person— teacher, friend—who has directly or indirectly braced us throughout our journey in some way or another. We are forever thankful to you. The Van Mahotsav Pakhwara 2022 was ended by Lt. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena planting 100,000 trees in the Asola Bhatti Mines Nature Sanctuary. The large plantation drive attracted over 400 participants, including students, paramilitary troops, and Delhi police. Each tree-planting pit was geo-tagged to make it simple to track growth and maintenance using satellite imaging and on-site inspection. Saxena urged Delhi residents, particularly the youth, to take part in transforming the city into a greener place by planting and caring for trees. He emphasised the significance of group social actions to combat pollution and climate change. MP Ramesh Bidhuri, Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, and senior members of the Delhi government's Environment and Forest Department were among those present. 11

In 2009, while working as a full-time journalist, Ramveer Singh heard about his friend's father, who had been diagnosed with cancer. One possible reason, he heard, was the intake of chemical-laden vegetables. Worried about the safety of his own family, he decided to quit his job to start natural farming. For this, he chose his ancestral land, located 40 km away from Bareilly, where he lived. In 2018, he stumbled upon the hydroponics method of farming while attending an agriculture-related event in Dubai. "I was enthralled by the type of farming method." It did not require soil and could be grown with fewer pest infestations. "Moreover, it saved almost 80% of the water required for growing plants," he said. The farmer decided to turn his three-story building into a hydroponics farm to grow more than 10,000 plants, including vegetables and fruits. At the farm, Singh mainly uses PVC pipes to carry nutrient-rich water to the plants. "The system designed using PVC pipes circulates water with the help of gravity." "The arrangement ensures that about 16 nutrients, such as magnesium, copper, phosphorus, nitrogen, zinc, and others, are distributed equally to each plant," he adds. 12

In order to expand the use of renewable energy sources and decrease reliance on coal, Uttar Pradesh in India is teaching female cotton spinners to operate solarpowered charkhas. The plan, which aims to increase cotton commerce, has the support of NGOs and businesses. For roughly 4,000 women in Uttar Pradesh, solar charkhas with 12 spindles, a motor, a battery pack, and a 400-watt solar panel have been supplied. For cotton spinners like Anita Devi, the programme has resulted in a more than fourfold rise in monthly earnings, from at least 2,000 rupees ($26) to 10,000 rupees ($126). Many women in India's marginalised communities labour from home, missing out on benefits and minimum wage, but the programme offers a green approach to improve their employment prospects. 13

To assist its Go Green Programs, the Akshaya Patra Foundation has teamed with FedEx Express, the largest express shipping provider in the world. In order to generate 25 kW of power, adopt an eco-friendly method of transportation, and lower carbon footprint, FedEx Express gave solar panels to the foundation's kitchen in Panvel, Maharashtra, and electric bikes to Bellary, Karnataka. Around 2,800 children will receive hot, wholesome meals from Akshaya Patra for the duration of an academic year thanks to the use of e-bikes in place of fuel-powered vehicles. Every school day since 2000, children have received noon meals from Akshaya Patra. The organisation has previously put photovoltaic solar panels in its kitchens, which use sunshine to create electricity. To further reduce its carbon footprint, it has added e-bikes for transportation to and from its kitchens. With the donation of solar panels and e-bikes by FedEx Express, Akshaya Patra's efforts to adopt green energy across its operations will be accelerated. Suvendu Choudhury, the Managing Director of International Operations for FedEx Express, expressed his delight in partnering with Akshaya Patra to bring about sustainable change. He said that as part of the FedEx Cares programme, they are collaborating with communities worldwide to promote sustainable transportation. The Chief Sustainability and Communication Officer of Akshaya Patra Foundation, Anant Arora, appreciated the partnership and applauded FedEx Express for supporting the Go-Green initiative by donating e-bikes and a solar power plant. 14

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted searches in 56 locations across 20 states and Union Territories as part of "Operation Megha Chakra," aimed at investigating cases of internet distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Cloud storage was utilised to search for sellers of CSAM on the internet after receiving input from Interpol and intelligence gathered during "Operation Carbon" last year. In November 2021, the CBI carried out "Operation Carbon," which involved raids at 76 locations across the nation and multiple arrests. This operation specifically targeted the possession, viewing, sharing, and creation of images or videos containing sexual or offensive material involving children. The federal investigative agency conducted searches in 59 locations across various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Telangana, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Meghalaya. The CBI operation targeted cloud storage facilities used by peddlers to circulate audio-visual content of illicit sexual activities with minors, earning the name "Megha Chakra." During the search operation, electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, belonging to over 50 suspects were recovered. Preliminary scrutiny of these devices using cyber-forensic tools has allegedly revealed a significant quantity of CSAM. It is worth noting that CSAM is a significant concern globally, and organisations and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to combat it. The CBI's efforts in this regard are commendable, and such operations serve as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse. 15

While enjoying a cup of coffee on her balcony in Kondapur, interior designer Chandana Teja noticed a slum near the lake with 250 people, including 45 children, living without basic sanitation facilities. Despite filing a complaint through the My GHMC app, there was no response. Concerned about the upcoming rainy season and the risk of waterborne diseases, Chandana and her husband decided to take action and spent ₹80,000 of their own money to build portable washrooms. They researched the specific requirements for the area and locality and designed the washrooms with guidance from her husband, who works in construction. Over the next few months, Chandana gained the trust of the slum community and their leader, Nagu Rao. The portable washrooms were recently installed, and the community is responsible for daily maintenance through a rotation-based chore service. Chandana also educated young girls on menstrual hygiene and purchased 1,000-liter water tanks to be filled daily. Chandana collaborated with We Can Make A Change, a civic duty organisation run by Karthik Pallam, in May. She praised the organization's approach of addressing root causes and thinking long-term. Chandana intends to continue working with the slum community on eco-friendly practises and other socially conscious initiatives. Her efforts demonstrate that a little compassion and action can make a significant difference. The slum community now has access to basic sanitation facilities and a chance for a healthier future. 16

Pawdorable: A 90-year-old grandma wakes up at 4:30 a.m. every day to cook for over 120 stray dogs. Kanak, a 90-year-old woman, wakes up every day at 4:30 a.m. to cook for over 120 stray dogs. Despite suffering from severe osteoporosis and undergoing multiple major operations, she hasn't let anything come between her and her love for the dogs. Kanak loves to experiment with her recipes and asks after each feeding, "Aaj sabne ache se khaya?" Sabko pasand aaya?" (Did everyone eat well? Did they like it?). Her granddaughter, Sana Saxena, shared her story on social media, captioning her post "Pawdorable. "Sana shared that her grandmother's heart only feels full when the dogs relish everything she makes. After each feeding, Sana shows Kanak videos of the dogs eating, which brings a big smile to her face. Despite the risks to her physical health, Sana recently took her grandmother with her to feed the dogs for the first time. Kanak told Sana that there is no medicine but a dog's love. "Aaj meri umar jo hai inki wajah se hai itni lambi, mai banau, ye khaaye, bas yahi khushi chahiye muje" (My long life is because of them; I cook for them, they eat it, and that's all the happiness I need). Sana shared photos of Kanak smiling and interacting with the dogs and urged people to look at her story before making excuses for not helping community animals. Kanak's selfless love and compassion for dogs is truly inspiring and heartwarming. 17

Datta Patil, a native of Halgara village in Maharashtra, grew up amidst hardships but in a family that emphasized the importance of education. He pursued engineering and later worked with companies like Yahoo and Microsoft before moving to California, USA. In 2016, during a visit to India, Datta was deeply affected by the distress of farmers due to the drought-like situation in Maharashtra. He realized that despite California also being a drought-hit region, he had never experienced water cuts. Datta researched and found that Halgara was digging as deep as 800 ft in search of groundwater while California's groundwater level was only 70 ft despite receiving half the rainfall of Halgara. This realization motivated him to recharge the groundwater level in Halgara by spending three lakh rupees from his own pocket. He started watershed activities, desilted canals and river beds, and created compartment bunds to store water during the monsoons. The success of the project saved over two hundred crore litres of water and raised the groundwater level from 800 ft to 100 ft. Datta's efforts in motivating villagers to contribute two hours of shramdaan and connecting with youngsters from the village who had migrated elsewhere led to the formation of a motivated team that built 26 check dams. He also presented the project to authorities at Yahoo USA and managed to secure over one crore rupees from the MNC's CSR wing. Datta's unwavering resolution and hard work transformed the landscape of Halgara, as seen in satellite images. Today, Halgara is a thriving village with hard- working farmers earning 300 times more than before. Datta Patil's efforts have saved lives of people, animals, and plants and restored faith in humanity. He is a true inspiration for generations to come. 18

Siva Swamy and Mahalakshmi, a retired couple in Coimbatore's Pachapalayam, founded Kalvi Thunai, a free education center for underprivileged children. The couple realized that children from dailywage- earning families who attend government schools lacked support to complete their homework and understand their lessons, leading to dread of school. Kalvi Thunai offers after-school support to students from classes 4 to 12, focusing on revision, completing assignments, extracurricular activities, outings, and holistic development. Kalvi Thunai started in 2014 with an initial investment of Rs 40 lakhs from the couple, who bought and renovated the education center building. They have now donated it to the center, ensuring its work will continue past their lifetimes. The center has 136 students and 11 paid teachers. Over 1,000 students have gone through the center, with at least 350 now employed. Mahalakshmi, who also works as a Samaritan counseling people with depression, began teaching their domestic help's children, and the couple saw them improve with time. Inspired, they bought the building and set up the education center. In the early days, the couple's biggest challenge was convincing potential students to come and study. The center now divides its work into two batches - one for kids in classes 4 to 8 and the other from classes 9 to 12. The center's main focus is on making subjects accessible to students and making the study process enjoyable. "Because of the way maths is taught in schools, children start hating the subject. We make sure they start liking it," says Swamy. The retired couple's vision and hard work have had a significant impact on the children in their community. Kalvi Thunai serves as an inspiring example of how individuals can make a difference in the world, one child at a time. . 19

Baskar N, a 42-year-old resident of Chennai, has been rescuing injured stray animals across the city for the past three years. In 2018, he converted his passenger auto into an ambulance for injured strays, who are otherwise denied help from cabs and other rickshaws in the city, and named it 'Help Voiceless'. Baskar used to work as an on-call car driver to earn additional income before converting his auto, which led him to meet Chennai-based volunteers Vinodhini and Manjula Ganesh, who feed stray dogs regularly. Inspired by their work, Baskar started feeding 75 dogs in his area by setting aside some money every week from his income to purchase rice and meat. One day, Vinodhini received a distress call from a friend about a dog who was hit by a vehicle, and cabs and autos refused to help because the dog was bleeding. Vinodhini asked Baskar for help, and without thinking twice, he left his auto stand to pick up the injured dog, who was given timely help and rescued. This led to more calls from rescue volunteers who needed transportation for injured animals. Baskar was driving a rented auto at that time, and his owner was against him taking injured animals in the vehicle. He gave the auto back to the owner and decided to purchase his own. Seeing an injured puppy being denied help ignited a spark in him, and he wanted to dedicate his life to helping these voiceless beings. He applied for financial assistance to purchase an auto and received partial assistance, investing Rs.40,000 from his savings and borrowing money from friends. In early 2019, once Baskar received his auto, he set up a cage for big dogs, a basket for puppies, and a carrier for cats. He carries some kibble along with water bowls to feed the rescues. His passenger auto now serves as an exclusive ambulance for animals. Over the past three years, several people have dialled distress calls to Baskar, who has been rescuing injured dogs, cats, and sometimes birds across the city. He is truly an animal's best friend. . 20

Bhaga Singh, a 31-year-old tea seller from Kelwara village in Rajasthan, has taken a remarkable initiative to promote a plastic- free district. He offers tea and samosas in exchange for plastic waste at his tea stall near Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan. His stall reads, "Give us plastic waste, drink tea in return," which has caught the attention of tourists and locals alike. Bhaga uses a taraju to weigh the plastic waste brought in by the customers and serves them tea and samosas in paper cups and plates proportionate to the measured weight. For instance, he offers a cup of tea in exchange for a kg of plastic waste. He collects the plastic waste from his customers and gives it to the waste collectors, without earning any profit from this initiative. Bhaga's inspiration for this initiative came from the increased usage of plastic in the area due to the influx of tourists to Kumbhalgarh Fort, a popular tourist destination and a World Heritage Site. The unsegregated waste was usually dumped in the open areas, causing significant environmental damage. However, things started changing in December 2022 when the district became the centre of attraction during the G20 Summit. Officer Bhuvaneshwar was deputed as the district coordinator to welcome tourists and world leaders attending the summit. He launched a plastic-free campaign in Rajsamand to clean the district and prevent environmental damage. Bhaga's initiative has made a significant contribution to this campaign, and his efforts have helped to reduce plastic waste in the district. His initiative has set an example for others to follow and has inspired many to take similar steps to promote a plastic-free environment. Overall, Bhaga Singh's initiative shows that even a humble tea seller can make a significant contribution towards protecting the environment and creating a sustainable future. . 21

The Deputy Commissioner of Koderma, Jharkhand, is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer named Ramesh Gholap. His life's work is to protect kids from child labour and make sure they get an education. His adventure began in his early years, when he and his mother and brothers had to sell bracelets to make ends meet. Yet because his mother always emphasised the value of education to him, he wanted to save the lives of children who were forced into child labour after becoming an IAS officer. More than 35 youngsters were freed from servitude in hotels and garages thanks to Gholap's efforts. Using government initiatives, he enrols them in school and pays them a monthly wage. He came across Sapna Kumari, one of these kids, while giving out blankets to the less fortunate. Gholap discovered that her parents had passed away when she was a little child and that her family lacked the funds to pay for her schooling. He took her right away to the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, where he registered himself as her legal guardian, registered her in school, and gave her a stipend of Rs. 2000 every month through the Integrated Child Development and Security Plan. Together with other officers, he even contributed to the purchase of her luggage, stationery, shoes, and uniform. Sapna initially struggled to adapt to her new surroundings and missed her family, but Gholap and the school's instructors assisted her in adjusting. She now adores dancing and does quite well in Hindi, her favourite subject. She now has a fresh outlook on life thanks to Gholap, and she is appreciative of the chance to go to school. Several kids who were previously forced into child labour have seen a major improvement in their life as a result of Gholap's work. He is a role model for people who want to change the world for the better and a shining example of how education can change people's lives. In 2015, while serving as the Sub Divisional Manager of Bermo in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand, he saved Sumit, a 9-year-old kid who had been sold to the corporation by his mother and was earning Rs 1000 per month at a mechanic shop. During the lockdown, he learned about five orphaned children who had lost their father earlier that month. He ensured that his four younger siblings were enrolled in school and provided them with access to health insurance and government schemes that ensure a regular monthly income for their family with the help of the Women and Child Development departments. His dedication to creating opportunities for society's most vulnerable members is remarkable. . 22

Madhu Vajrakarur, a 23-year-old electrical engineering student from Andhra Pradesh, has invented a wind turbine that generates both electricity and clean drinking water. This invention could be a game-changer for the millions of people in India who lack access to safe drinking water and a continuous supply of electricity. Madhu's wind turbine stands 15 feet tall and collects moisture from the atmosphere, which is routed through a copper pipe into a three-stage filter to remove dust particles and purify the water. The wind turbine is linked to a 30- kilowatt inverter, which Madhu uses to power fans, lights, and plug-points in his home. He built the wind turbine with plastic pipes, iron rods, and other materials purchased online for a total cost of Rs 1 lakh, which he received from his parents and his own savings. Madhu's innovation is a result of his childhood dream of building a wind turbine. He learned how to make solar power grids and automatic street lights in the second year of college, which gave him the handson experience he needed to work with such technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussion on windmills that can generate water in his Mann Ki Baat session in October 2020 prompted Madhu to create his wind turbine. He learned more about building a wind turbine that can generate both water and electricity by watching YouTube videos. Today, the wind turbine provides Madhu with 80 to 100 litres of water per day, and he can save money by not using a motor to pump water from bore wells. When he runs out of drinking water, his neighbours benefit from the wind turbine as well. Madhu hopes to commercialize his design and assist others by installing this wind turbine in water- stressed areas. Arpit Upadhyay and Mohit Jajoriya, students at IIT Bombay, developed a RO hand pump that generates clean drinking water without the need for electricity. The pair, who share a passion for water security, created the device for the Invention Factory program, a competition that challenges students to come up with a tangible idea that can address a significant societal need. Their RO hand pump was designed to provide equitable access to clean drinking water in rural India, where water quality is a major concern. Mohit, who comes from Rajasthan, highlighted that water quality is a significant issue in India, with high rates of desertification and total dissolved solids (TDS) in most districts exceeding recommended levels. Arpit, from Uttar Pradesh, added that high fluoride levels in water in many parts of the state cause people's teeth to turn yellow. Together, they sought to create a solution that would address these issues and provide people in rural India with access to safe drinking water. The RO hand pump, which earned the duo second place in the competition and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, was designed to produce one litre of fresh water for every seven litres of water it receives. The device operates without electricity, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution for communities that lack access to electricity. Arpit and Mohit's RO hand pump represents a significant step towards water security in rural India, where safe drinking water is a scarce resource. Their innovative solution shows that even simple technologies can make a big impact in addressing complex societal problems. With continued innovation and investment in sustainable solutions like the RO hand pump, it is possible to ensure that everyone has access to safe drinking water. . 24

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the largest oil company in India, is planning to recycle 100 million discarded PET bottles each year to create eco-friendly uniforms for its petrol pumps and LPG distributor agencies. The initiative, named "Unbottled," is the world's largest initiative to reuse and recycle 100 million PET bottles each year. The company will set up a collection agency to collect such bottles and convert them into yarn for weaving or knitting fabric, which will then be given to a textile company to make uniforms. Each uniform set will aid in the recycling of approximately 28 used PET bottles. IOC has already committed to a net-zero emission target by 2046 and is now venturing into PET bottle recycling. In addition to the "Unbottled" initiative, IOC has launched a brand for sustainable garments made from recycled polyester, which will meet the needs of customer attendants from other oil marketing companies, non-combat uniforms for the Army, uniforms/dresses for institutions, and retail sales. These uniforms' dress materials are made from recycled polyester derived from the processing of used and discarded PET bottles. This initiative would support the recycling of approximately 405 tonnes of PET bottles, which is equivalent to offsetting over 20 million bottles per year. IOC has also released indoor cooking stoves that can run on both solar power and auxiliary energy sources, providing households with a more affordable and environmentally friendly cooking solution. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, launched IOC's uniform "Unbottled" and announced the commercial rollout of the indoor solar cooking system during the inaugural function of India Energy Week. Modi stated that the introduction of indoor solar cooking opens up a new dimension for green and clean cooking and expressed hope that the cooking stoves will reach 3 crore households in the near future. Overall, IOC's initiatives to recycle PET bottles and introduce eco-friendly uniforms and cooking stoves demonstrate the company's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. By directly entering the PET bottle recycling market, IOC is setting an example for other companies to follow in their efforts to protect the environment. . 25
