10To advertise call 07858 114061Dave’s top tipsLow level to close coupled cisternsHow can I change my old low-level toilet to a new close-coupled toilet without having a gap behind the cistern? Well there are two possible answers. You either move all of the outgoing pipework in your bathroom wall or floor, or you make a simple box that goes on the wall behind the new close-coupled cistern. The new cistern is then fixed to this box, which can then be tiled or painted depending on what you like.Even if the bathroom walls are tiled already, using strong construction adhesive you can stick the required timbers on the wall and then tack some plasterboard to them when the adhesive is dry. Make sure that you insert a timber cross member at the height of the screw holes which secure the cistern to the wall. The reason a low level toilet does not often exchange easily for a close coupled unit is because 99% of the time a low level unit has a waste outlet which goes down into the floor. If the low level unit you have has a waste outlet which goes directly through the wall or turns at a right angle out of the back of the toilet to go right or left away from the toilet, then you should have no problem replacing it with a close coupled toilet. If your low level unit goes into the floor, the floor outlet is too far away from the wall to allow an easy exchange with a close-coupled unit. Wars, threats, violence against protesters. 2026 seems to have continued the unpredictable chaos of 2025. In times of uncertainty it can be tempting to look for someone to blame and demonise, whether it’s the government, foreigners, or those we disagree with. It’s all their fault! The problem is that drawing such boundaries further divides and fractures society.One of Jesus’ most challenging, counter-cultural teachings was that we should love everyone, including our enemies. Rather than letting hate in, let love shine out. Compassion and kindness are super-powers which strengthen community, decrease isolation, calm situations, and make things better for everyone involved.And this is something that is entirely in our control. You can make someone’s day simply by giving a helping hand, a kind word, a listening ear, or a smile, and you’ll feel better for it too. If we all commit to random little acts of kindness and love, then quickly our part of the world will feel a better place. We are so glad Duncan Coombs, ex Pershore College Lecturer, is available to share his expert Horticultural knowledge, this time on the History of Hidcote Manor Gardens the famous National Trust property in Gloucestershire.February is the month of the Snowdrop and there are many wonderful Gardens where they can be seen at their best, the one on our doorstop being The Rococo Gardens near Painswick.You don’t have to live in Hucclecote to attend our talks all are welcome from the surrounding area. Larkhay WIHappy New Year everyone.We ended 2025 with our Christmas party, an evening of good food and good company, and a magician called Dr Bob, who was most entertaining. Just one question though…how on earth did he do that? As it was January we had our annual Resolutions vote. (Our resolution process means that every WI member has the chance to have her say on what the WI campaigns on each year, this is a countrywide event.) Our most famous campaign to date was the Keep Britain Tidy one in 1954, which was chaired by Lady Elizabeth Brunner of the NFWI Board and led to the Litter Act being passed in 1958.Following the vote we had one of our own ladies, Debbie, give us an insight on what it was like being a trauma nurse for 35 years. Some of her recollections had us laughing out loud whilst others had us feeling very sad. If you would like to learn more about what the WI does, and the events that are put on by Larkhay WI and the Gloucestershire Federation of WIÕs, or maybe meet new friends, enjoy a coffee and chat, then come along and join us.. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. We were also given information of how to find and use defibrillators on a patient, very useful knowledge indeed.Our members will be enjoying a spring lunch at the New Dawn Inn on Tewkesbury Road at the end of February, and many of us are going to a Literary Tea event in March to be held at Frampton on Severn. Our walking group will be striding out again once the weather has improved, and our Silverscribes are still writing their amazing stories and anecdotes.Our next meeting will be on 19th February at 10am, at Methodist Church hall, Carisbrooke Road, Hucclecote, when we will hear about the history of the Bon Marche building - Debenhams - which now houses the library and students from the University of Gloucestershire.
