3 Please mention The Hucclecote-Link when responding to adverts A bit about The Hucclecote- The Hucclecote-Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last Spring is on it’s way –with the clocks going forward, the nights are starting to pull out, the mornings are lighter, there are snowdrops and daffodils blooming, and although I think there may still be a cold spell ahead, it’s certainly a milder day as I write this today. Spring is always that time of year where we start to think about having a good old spring clean in our homes. So if you are looking for a local professional domestic cleaning service, see what Dab Cleaning Services can offer on page 15. Or perhaps you need help with decluttering of your home, Emerald Angels can help you out with this service, read more on page 14. With the bank holidays this Easter weekend, it can be a time of year when we start to think about what DIY needs doing around the home. If you are after someone to help with painting and decorating, we have a couple of local businesses; EHI and KJS Decorating, that can be found on page 9. Maybe you have been thinking about utilising the space in your loft, we have a great company on board; Access4Lofts, find them on page 7 and see how they can help you renovate this space. Or if you are thinking of installing new widows, check out the offer from Manor Windows on page 19. If you are a local business that is thinking about advertising in 2024 - take advantage of our April offer and get 20% OFF bookings taken this month, do get in touch for more details. Have a great month ahead Sarah. The Link Directories (Gloucester) Ltd cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions or endorse companies, products or services that appear in this magazine. 10 To advertise call 07858 114061 Dave’s top tips Painting a flush door A flush door is a door without any additions. There are no panels or glazing windows just a straight forward flat faced door. Painting a flush door, although they are the most basic of doors, is one of the hardest job of all door painting as there can be no break when painting a side. If you stop for more than a minute or two the edge of the paint hardens and this can show through the painted finish as a ridge in the paintwork. The flush door should be held open by using door wedges pushed in under the door after a piece of cardboard or old carpet off cut has been pushed under the door to protect the floor. Take off the door handles and smear a tiny bit of Vaseline on the hinges. This will stop any paint sticking to them and if you do get paint on the hinges it will allow you to wipe it off easily. Use the hose of the Hoover to suck out any sawdust from the lock or latch apertures. Flush doors can be painted by using a roller and if you do this use a small (radiator) roller. Go over the rolled door with a dry brush to brush out any stipple effects the roller may have left. It is much better, especially when using gloss paint to use a roller with natural fibres such as sheepskin, mohair or wool. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

14 To advertise call 07858 114061 Silverdale WI Our March meeting was well attended and we were entertained by a local magician, who baffled us with his sleight of hand and amazing tricks. We had two members celebrating birthdays, and several members stayed after the meeting to enjoy a “lite lunch”. Some of our members had participated in an Easter card-making workshop and had brought their efforts in to show us. Some very attractive and fun cards had been made. We are supporting a local charity Charlie’s who offer help and support for anyone affected by cancer, and we are having various events over the coming months to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Our next members’ meeting will be on 18th April.

20 To advertise call 07858 114061 Hucclecote Garden Club We welcomed back Duncan Coombs to our Club last month when the topic of his talk was The Herbacious Border. Duncan illustrated his talk with wonderful photos showing what you can do with your borders over the course of a year. Many of our National Trust Gardens, including locally Hidcote Manor and Kiftsgate were featured with masses of colour and interesting structure in very generous borders. Plenty of ideas for the coming seasons in our own smaller scale gardens. Later this month on the 25th April we have Helen Mugridge from Viney Hill in the Forest of Dean coming to the Garden Club. Helen will be talking on Gardening for Wildlife, a very current topic of interest to most gardeners in the light of changes to our climate and the accompanying struggles of our Wildlife. Do come along and enjoy a great cup of tea/coffee and generous Raffle, and pick up some gardening tips along the way. We meet at Hucclecote Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of the month, doors open 7.00pm, meeting starts at 7.30pm. Please contact either Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573 for further details. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Hucclecote Townswomens Guild February meeting was held on a wet night with the threat of the Hucclecote road being closed due to major road works. This did not stop 30 members attending. We welcomed a new member and a member returning after 2 years. The meeting included the normal finance update, a discussion on our recent new years lunch at Bowden Hall and an update on plans for the lunch club's planned visit to the Victoria Inn. Our monthly raffle was won by Jackie We then welcomed our speaker Lorraine Campbell who gave an amusing talk about the music halls and the lives and songs of Verity Tilley and Marie Lloyd. Verity Tilley's first performance was at the age of 4 in Gloucester. We joined in with some of the saucy songs of which it was said Queen Mary did not approve. Sue thanked Lorraine and told us it reminded her of time spent with her grandmother. The meeting ended with the usual refreshments and a chat with friends. Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the Month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30p.m. The April meeting is on is on Thursday 18th when the speaker will be Pam Slater from Cotswold Perfumery For more information contact Linda on 01452 617701 Larkhay WI This month we had Melanie and Holly visit us to tell us all about Cotswold Riding for the Disabled (RDA), Larkhay WI’s chosen charity for 2024. RDA believes that disability is not about what you can’t do; it’s about what you can do. They are one of the largest RDA groups in the country, have 17 horses and ponies, and their youngest member is just 4 years old. We are hoping, as a group, to go over in the summer to meet and have tea with the ponies. Coming up we have a coffee morning to raise funds for the RDA, we are starting a knit and natter group and we have a group social at the end of April. Our group consists of Larkhay WI, Silverdale WI and Horsebere WI. Our aim, besides enjoying ourselves, is to get together and meet other WI members. Our next month’s meeting is on the 11th April, when Chris Champress is going to show us how to make a brooch, so if you fancy doing something crafty then you are welcome to come and join us. We are a relaxed, friendly group of ladies that meet up on the second Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre starting at 7.30, doors open 7pm. For further information please contact Sarah, our President, on 01452 548101 or Bev, our secretary, on 01452 613208.
