3 Please mention when responding to adverts A bit about Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. A month of birthday’s and bank holidays - so what’s not to like about May! I’m so proud to say that this month sees the Hucclecote Link celebrate 17 years of publishing - a great achievement for us considering the turbulent last few years we have all been through. So I wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who have helped get us to this milestone. To the local businesses for putting their trust in us and using us to help get their business into 1000’s of homes locally and to our great team of distributors who ensure that the directories are delivered regularly. Also to yourself, the reader, who keeps picking up the phone and using our local businesses and helps to keep them going, thank you for all your support and please do continue to mention the Hucclecote Link if you use a business from our directory. With Spring now here and the bank holiday weekends upon us, this is a time where we look at the jobs that might need doing outside our homes to get our gardens Summer ready. We have a variety of gardeners, landscapers, and property maintenance businesses that can help, you can find them on our index on poge 26. If you run a local business and would like to see how we could help you get new business, please do get in touch and take advantage of our May 3 for 2 offer. Have a great month & enjoy the bank holidays Sarah. 10 To advertise call 07858 114061 Dave’s top tips Painting a flush door A flush door is a door without any additions. There are no panels or glazing windows just a straight forward flat faced door. Painting a flush door, although they are the most basic of doors, is one of the hardest job of all door painting as there can be no break when painting a side. If you stop for more than a minute or two the edge of the paint hardens and this can show through the painted finish as a ridge in the paintwork. The flush door should be held open by using door wedges pushed in under the door after a piece of cardboard or old carpet off cut has been pushed under the door to protect the floor. Take off the door handles and smear a tiny bit of Vaseline on the hinges. This will stop any paint sticking to them and if you do get paint on the hinges it will allow you to wipe it off easily. Use the hose of the Hoover to suck out any sawdust from the lock or latch apertures. Flush doors can be painted by using a roller and if you do this use a small (radiator) roller. Go over the rolled door with a dry brush to brush out any stipple effects the roller may have left. It is much better, especially when using gloss paint to use a roller with natural fibres such as sheepskin, mohair or wool. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

22 To advertise call 07858 114061 Silverdale WI As our planned speaker was unable to attend at short notice, Silverdale WI members enjoyed a very pleasant informal morning at their April meeting with a quiz and social event. We also Þlled handmade tote bags (produced by one of our members) with a selection of toiletries and personal feminine items generously donated by members and friends which will be presented to Stroud Women’s Refuge Charity. The remainder of the toiletry items will be donated to the Drop In Centre for homeless in Gloucester. The response to our Appeal had been amazing and so appreciated. After the meeting several members stayed for a delicious ploughman’s lunch. The Walking Group had enjoyed a lovely stroll through Highnam on a rare warm April morning the previous week, and our Silver Scribes group had met to discuss and practise their story writing skills. We will soon be having a fund raising event to support Charlies, a charity that offers help and support to anyone affected by cancer. Our next meeting will be on 16th May.

24 To advertise call 07858 114061 Hucclecote Garden Club At last we've reached May, many gardeners favourite month of the year. There are so many RHS Garden Shows to visit in May, including our near-neighbour the RHS Spring Malvern Show, and the world-famous RHS Chelsea Show held in London later in the month. We will be welcoming Will Scott from The Walled Garden, Worcester to our Club later in the month. Will will be enlightening us on the lost art of Tool Sharpening for the Terrified! According to the blurb, this will be "A practical demonstration of the principles and techniques of sharpening hand tools such as knives, scissors, secateurs and shears". There will be some booklets and sharpening files available for sale. Hopefully we can pick up some very good tips for a time of year when our garden tools will be in full use. Dont forget this month we have two local Plant Sales held at Hucclecote Methodist Church, the first on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, 10.30am and Saturday 25th May, at 10.30am. Our Club is held on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.00pm. For further details please contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD By the time you read this we would have welcomed Spring, celebrated Easter and lost an hours sleep due to the clocks going forward. Our March speaker gave a very interesting talk the subject being Woodchester Mansion the unfinished Gothic revival mansion house in Nympsfield. William Leigh bought the Woodchester Park Estate in 1854, demolished the existing house and in 1858 work began on building the Manson but in 1873 when William Leigh died all work stopped . It had many owners over the years and in 1938 it was sold to a mental health charity, the Barnwood House Trust and after several uses was abandoned to the elements and eventually purchased by Stroud District Council who leased it to the Woodchester Mansion Trust in 1992. The house is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays from April to end of October, still unfinished but well worth a visit. Our April talk was “The Cotswold Perfumery” which will be followed by “Fun with a G-String” on May 16th. Also to look forward to is “From the World of Savile Row Tailoring to the World of Auctioneering” on the 20th June. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre doors open from 7.00pm with the meeting starting at 7.30pm. Why not come along and join us one month you would always be given a warm welcome and make new like minded friends. For more information you can contact Linda on 01452 617701 so pick up the phone and give me a call . Larkhay WI This month we had Melanie and Holly visit us to tell us all about Cotswold Riding for the Disabled (RDA), Larkhay WI’s chosen charity for 2024. RDA believes that disability is not about what you can’t do; it’s about what you can do. They are one of the largest RDA groups in the country, have 17 horses and ponies, and their youngest member is just 4 years old. We are hoping, as a group, to go over in the summer to meet and have tea with the ponies. Coming up we have a coffee morning to raise funds for the RDA, we are starting a knit and natter group and we have a group social at the end of April. Our group consists of Larkhay WI, Silverdale WI and Horsebere WI. Our aim, besides enjoying ourselves, is to get together and meet other WI members. Our next month’s meeting is on the 11th April, when Chris Champress is going to show us how to make a brooch, so if you fancy doing something crafty then you are welcome to come and join us. We are a relaxed, friendly group of ladies that meet up on the second Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre starting at 7.30, doors open 7pm. For further information please contact Sarah, our President, on 01452 548101 or Bev, our secretary, on 01452 613208.

25 Please mention when responding to adverts Film Releases in May 2024 All film releases are subject to change and we advise customers to keep up to date with the Cineworld website and the Cineworld social media. 02 May 2024 - Fall Guy He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right? From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night, comes his most personal film yet. A new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy. Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive) stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place films, Sicario)—goes missing. 09 May 2024 - Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is directed by Wes Ball (the “Maze Runner” trilogy) and stars Owen Teague (“IT”), Freya Allan (“The Witcher”), Kevin Durand (“Locke & Key”), Peter Macon (“Shameless”), and William H. Macy (“Fargo”). The screenplay is by Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds”) and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Avatar: The Way of Water”) and Patrick Aison (“Prey”), based on characters created by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and the producers are Wes Ball, Joe Hartwick, Jr. (“The Maze Runner”), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Jason Reed (“Mulan”), with Peter Chernin (the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy) and Jenno Topping (“Ford v. Ferrari”) serving as executive producers. 17 May 2024 - The Strangers: Chapter 1 After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in THE STRANGERS ― CHAPTER 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series. 17 May 2024 – Previews Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th - IF From writer and director John Krasinski, IF is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids. IF stars Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, and the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell alongside many more as the wonderfully unique characters that reflect the incredible power of a child’s imagination 24 May 2024 - FURIOSA As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortal Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
