Introductory Story
Maudgalyāyana or by his birth name Kolita was one of
the Buddha's closest disciples. Described as a contemporary of
disciples such as Subhuti, Śāriputra and Mahākāśyapa, he is
considered the second of the Buddha's two foremost male
disciples, together with Śāriputra.
Maudgalyayana is known for his psychic powers, and he
is often depicted using these in his teaching methods.
Maudgalyāyana is born in a Brahmin family of the village
Kolita after which he is named. His mother is a female Brahmin
called Mogallāni, and his father is the village chief of warrior caste.
Kolita is born on the same day as Upatiṣya (Śāriputra), and the
two are friends from childhood. Kolita and Upatiṣya develop an
interest in the spiritual life when they are young.
To profess Buddhism
The friendship between the families of Moggallana and
Sariputta existed for seven generations; and the two were the
friends since their childhood.
When Sariputta heard a discourse of Assaji, a disciple of
the Buddha, he was impressed with his doctrine and became a
Sotapanna. He then went to Moggallana to inform him of his
discovery; who in turn also became a Sotapanna, soon after
hearing the teaching of the Buddha. The two then marched to the
Buddha along with five hundred disciples of Sanjaya.
His Work on Buddhism
Mogallana was capable of miracles. When ordinated and
orphaned, it appeared that he had a remarkable ability in miracles,
excellent than monks. He could show power to the landscapes of
hell beasts, and go to heaven worlds. He could see hell beasts in
the troves and goddesses who enjoyed the pleasure from
philanthropy in human cities as well.
He brought the message of the beasts of hell and the
goddesses to the relatives and the people, causing the relatives
and the people to refrain from the obscenity that would take them
to hell. They created philanthropy that would lead them to the
peace of the heavens, and at the same time make merit dedicated
to their relatives.
Some people who at first did not have faith in Buddhism
had abandoned the old religion to believe in Buddhism even
more.
Virtues as good model for leading a life
1. Being very powerful means being able to perform
various powers, because Mogallana has passed through expert
meditation, allowing him to repress the wicked, the ferocious, and
be able to persuade them to reintegrate their vile acts to regain
the meditation.
2. He is a charity to teach people because Mogallana is
very powerful, but he will only use the power if there is a reason
to use it as a tool or equipment to teach people and defeat the
wicked to become Buddhist converts. He also has a knack for
other disciples. In terms of clarifying Buddhist companies'
deeply blamed sins.
