RAF 2000 GYROPLANE
NO. 40: Control System, specific to: RAF 2000 Gyroplanes registered in the United Kingdom
The RAF 2000 Gyroplane has accumulated thousands of trouble free hours with the control system now in place.
However, the PFA / CAA will be issuing a mandatory permit directive, to address their concerns regarding the
control system for the RAF 2000 Gyroplane.
The PFA / CAA in conjunction with Rotary Air Force (RAF) have undertaken an analysis of the control system of the
RAF 2000 Gyroplane. PFA / CAA have requested that RAF strengthen a few components that they believe do not
meet the standards of BCAR section T. See Drawing No. 1, Control System Assembly before Modifications and
Drawing No. 2, Control System Modifications January 2006.
RAF will be supplying components to United Kingdom owners at a reduced cost.
Call for pricing, reduced cost offer expires December 31, 2006.
These upgraded components will be standard with all new RAF 2000 Gyroplane Kit aircraft ordered that leave the
factory for the United Kingdom from January 2006 and on. The following replacement components will be available
for shipment in the middle of January 2006:

INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
NOTE: Ensure bolts are re-installed according to RAF 2000 Construction
Manual Specifications, including any relevant specified torque setting.
Perform a physical dimension check on the current control system and record all the
dimensions. After completion of the upgrade recheck the dimensions and ensure that
they are the same as the original configuration (this is explained more in detail in the
installation procedures).
Also perform a full and free control movement check after completion of new parts to
ensure that the build has been correctly completed.
The next procedure to perform is to lock the joystick assembly in place, with the gust
lock. Then take a protractor and measure the angles of the following
1- Joystick Tube
2- Front Control Arm Pivot
3- Rear Control Arm Pivot
4- Push Tube arms 1 and 2
These angles will be required after the new parts are installed to ensure that the new parts
are installed to the original angles. The following figures demonstrate how some of these
measurements can be taken.

To install the new 070-024-S24 ½" RND x 28 ½" Stainless Steel Control Tube Push Rod,
follow this procedure. Remove the bolts that connect through the rod ends on the control
tube rod as shown in the following figure.
Step 1. To remove the old control tube rod from the assembly, the lower radiator mount
will have to be removed, and following this the control tube rod can be pulled out
towards the back of the gyro.
Step 2. Measure the length of the old control tube rod from centre to centre of the rod end
eyes. This will then be used to ensure when the new rod is installed that it is the same
length.
Step 3. Remove the NF Nuts that connect the rod ends and the control rod tube, as they
are required on the new installation.
The new stainless steel control tube rod, high strength rod ends, and NF nuts can be
assembled as shown. Ensure the length is the same as the old assembly, and then install
the new control tube rod into the control assembly.
Remove bolts to replace control tube.

To install the 070-023-S23 7 ½" x.125" Wall Knurled 4130 Steel Rear Control Yoke
Tube, remove the hardware and push tube arms as shown in the following figure.
Remove the old control yoke tube, and replace with the new tube. Then replace the push
tube arms and hardware, and ensure that the original angles for the push tube arms and
rear control arm are configured.
1. Remove hardware as shown.
3. Replace Tube
2. Remove push tube arms
To install the 070-022-S22 20 ½" x .125 wall knurled 4130 Steel Joystick Control Tube,
perform the following steps:
Step 1: Remove the hardware connecting the joysticks from the old joystick control tube,
and pull off both of the joystick tubes, as shown in the figure below.
Step 2: Remove the joystick control tube from the control assembly by removing the 3
bolts on the front control arm (See Figure below). The old Joystick Control tube can then
be pulled out from the front control arm.
The new joystick control tube can then be installed by following the reverse steps of this
procedure, by placing the new joystick control tube back on the control assembly and
replacing the hardware removed in step 2. The joysticks can then be placed onto the new
Joystick Control Tube, and the hardware can be put back in place, as in step 1.

To install the 320-017-S07 Gimble Activation Arm Mk 3, use the following procedure.
Step 1. Remove the current gimble activation arm by loosening the hardware (as shown
in the picture). The rod ends will not be changed, so the bolts must just be removed to
replace the gimble activation arm.
Step 2. The new gimble activation arm is to be install, using (2) AN4-26A bolts, (2)
MS20365-428 nuts, and (4) AN960-416 washers.
Step 3. The same bolts are used to attach the push rods to the gimble activation arm.

RAF 2000 GYROPLANE
NO. 41: Caution / Warning
RAF 2000 Gyroplane Dual Flight Instruction, Pilot Proficiency
RAF strongly recommends that RAF 2000 Gyroplane owners obtain 25 – 45 hours of dual gyroplane flight
instruction.
RAF strongly recommends that the RAF 2000 Gyroplane owners have the RAF 2000 Gyroplane inspected, set-up,
and test flown by a qualified Gyroplane CFI.
A review of the RAF 2000 Gyroplane incidents and accidents over the past years prove that the owners that follow
RAF’s recommendations are the most safe and successful.
Typically Safe and Successful RAF 2000 Gyroplane owners are those individuals who have built the RAF 2000
Gyroplane as per the construction manual without modification. They worked with accredited flight instructors who
inspected, set-up, and test flew the RAF 2000 Gyroplane. Then the RAF owner has trained to the private pilot
requirements. Has successfully completed the flight test and then has treated the gyroplane rating as a licence to
learn. The safe and successful RAF owner recognizes they have only demonstrated the basic skill level to be
released to build their skill level using the most important thing the instructor has imparted to them “Good Pilot
Judgement” to pick the days to build their skill.
Caution / Warning RAF 2000 Gyroplane Owners make sure you do the following:
1. Obtain 25 – 45 hours of dual gyroplane flight instruction.
2. Have the RAF 2000 Gyroplane inspected, set-up, and test flown by a qualified Gyroplane CFI.
3. Train to a skill level Private Pilot Gyroplane minimum.
4. Fly enough to stay current and proficient.
5. Fly within your limits as a pilot. Use “Good Pilot Judgement” to pick the days to build your skill level.
6. Fly within the aircraft limits as per the Flight Manual and Operating Limitations.
7. Follow regimented Pre-Flight and Post-Flight Inspections.
8. Follow the Maintenance Schedule.

RAF 2000 GYROPLANE
NO. 43: RAF2000 has a new logo!
RAF 2000 Has A New Logo!
by Jim West
I cannot begin to tell you how many people still think that there no longer is an RAF factory and support system.
So, I would like to unveil, for those that still haven't figured out what happened, the new RAF logo and ad cover
page which is pictured at the left. I want to let readers know that RAF has not gone away and they have been
working on improving distribution by shipping from two locations instead of just one.
I must emphasize that many RAF Pilots & owners need to recognize that the folks in South Africa have just taken
over an international business. Rome was not built in one day and moving a business from one country to another
does not happen overnight either. Yolande Mocke-Combrinck, Sales & Marketing Manager of Rotary Air Force
South Africa, indicated that they understand their customers’ frustration and they are doing everything in their
power to sort out the last few details. She appreciates and asks for our patience. I want to add that we appreciate
their effort and wish them a good start.
RAF has, from a customer's viewpoint, only moved. It has, from a customer's viewpoint, gotten closer in some
cases or further from where they live in others. It is now owned by guys that fly for fun and fly for excitement and fly
with students and assemble beautiful RAF machines and they will be at Airventure in the USA this summer, the
summer of 2008.
The new management has for many years run the Upington Microlight & RAF 2000 Training Center. They have a
significant history in the South African aviation community and these guys are serious about gyroplanes. The new
company is called Rotary Air Force South Africa Pty Ltd.
Give them a call or send them an email. Their contact information is at the end of this article.
Logistically, the coverage is Canada to South Africa with all points between covered as in the past but from two
parts-sourcing locations, rather than one.
One would think that shipping is going to be simpler for some purchases and more complex for others but not true
from the purchaser’s perspective. The logistics in many ways will be simpler for the purchaser since there are now
two warehouses, one in Canada and one in Upington, South Africa. Although parts will come from both locations of
this global business, the purchasing of parts will always be handled through the factory, your factory, in Upington. If
a part ships easier from Canada, it will be shipped from there, but if a part ships more directly from Upington, it will

be shipped from there. In other words, order your parts from Upington and leave the rest to the professionals.
They will take care of the logistics.
What about the warehouse in Canada? There is an inventory of parts being massed in a warehouse in Canada
and managed through the Upington, South Africa location. If parts are ordered for a destination in North America
(for instance) and are in inventory in Canada, they will be shipped in a day or so from the Canada location. This is
simply a “shipping and receiving” operation not a customer service or sales location. That said, I must just mention
that the locations are still busy with sorting out some of the “red tape” regarding a South African Company shipping
from a Canadian warehouse. They are working towards a hassle-free shipping environment from both locations.
They asked us all to be patient during this time, until they have all the paper procedures out of the way.
How can one make payments to a business in South Africa? Like any business, products don’t ship without
payments received. So how do you buy something from outside of your country? The process is pretty simple.
They have arrangements that allow bank-to-bank transfers in Canadian Dollars, in US Dollars and, as you expect,
in South African Rands.
Who are some of the principal contacts? There are several but I will mention just a few whose names might
already be familiar. Eben Mocke Sr. and Eben Mocke Jr. can be contacted for all technical aspects on the RAF
2000, Yolande Mocke-Combrinck manages all the sales of kits and parts as well as the marketing and Mark
Thornton is the South African Sales Representative for the RAF 2000 in Canada, Canada.
Operating in Upington, South Africa, Eben Mocke Sr. has been in the business of assembling RAF 2000 kits and as
a (CFI) Certified Flight Instructor with over 2,000 hours training people to fly RAF 2000 machines for years.
Oftentimes his day is happily interrupted by friends dropping in via RAF to spend a little time chatting and talking
about flying. Many of those friends learned to fly because Eben was there to teach and mentor them. There is also
an RAF Pilot that our members know from many photographs on the RAF Pilots web site, especially in the
members’ area of the site. That is Eben Mocke Jr. Eben Jr., with 700 hours on the RAF, has been a long-time RAF
Pilot and long-time contributor to our website. I personally am always happy to hear what he has to say, because
he is always finding fun places to fly in an RAF. The South African team also has a long-time RAF sales agent in
Dave Armstrong, who many of you already know.
That brings me to the possibility of going to South Africa on a vacation holiday to do some flying with the Mocke
clan. There is a story about that in the January, 2008 issue of the RAF Pilot. If you are reading this, you might
consider the trip. If you time your trip right, you could take part in the Kalahari Bundu Bash. In any case, you will
have a great time. Oh… and stay at the Islandview Guesthouse!
Mark Thornton had previously worked for Rotary Air Force Marketing, Inc. (RAF) in the marketing endeavor of RAF
2000 machines for 7 years and is continuing in that role in North America for Rotary Air Force South Africa. He
