The Waves

Book Summary

The beginning of the novel deals with early morning and childhood, as the six
characters attend grade school. The reader is privy to the internal thoughts of each
child upon waking. In this way, the reader becomes acquainted with each character
through his or her inner monologue as with the outer present actions with one another.
Their distinct personalities begin to emerge. In the second part, the characters move
into their teenage years. Each of the characters has been sent off to separate boarding
schools, one for the boys and one for the girls. The boys, Bernard, Louis, and Neville,
have different reactions upon arrival at their school, and to the traditions and
authority upheld there. Each develops his own literary ambitions, although they have
vastly different sensibilities in their goals. This is where they meet Percival, who is
becoming an important figure in each of their lives. The girls don’t seem to respond as
well to the concept of boarding school and are eager for it coming to an end. Susan is
homesick and yearns to be back at the farm with her father, Rhoda hates that her
solitude is interrupted by forced social interactions at school, and Jinny feels ready to
begin her real life and enter society. By the end of this part, each of the characters
seems to have established his or her own set of beliefs and desires, allowing them to step
out on their own into the world and pursue their individual ambitions. In the third part,
the characters are in the early stages of adulthood. Bernard and Neville have gone off
to college together and remain good friends with Percival. Due to Percival’s admirable
traits, Neville has become fixated on his perceived beauty and perfection and has
begun to fall in love with him. Meanwhile, Louis has set up a life in London where he
works as a clerk at a shipping firm. An aspiring poet, he spends his lunch breaks
observing the people around him, hoping to transform these observations into literary
gold. The fourth part centers on a dinner party thrown to celebrate Percival, who is set
to move to India to assume a position in the government. The party also serves as a
reunion for the other six characters, many of who haven’t seen each other since
childhood. Percival’s presence eases the tension among them, allowing them to come
together and enjoy each other’s company in spite of their differences. Not long after the
dinner party, news arrives that Percival has died in India. The six characters interpret
this event in vastly different ways. Distraught, the death of his close friend and love
interest causes Neville to ruminate on the fragility of human existence. When Bernard
receives the news, his first child has just been born, and so he feels torn between

immense joy and sorrow. Bernard finds comfort in visiting a museum and surveying the
artwork, while Rhoda attends the opera, each finding expressions of the wealth of
human emotion within these artistic expressions. The novel continues to follow the
characters through the trials and tribulations of reaching maturity. Susan continues to
live her life on the farm and has become a mother, which she feels is gratifying but
stifling. Jinny, on the other hand, is always with a new partner and has little interest in
settling down. Bernard begins to doubt himself and his literary abilities, wondering
whether stories have the ability to effectively convey reality. Each character confronts
the reality of his or her own mortality, realizing that they will not live forever. The
friends once again are brought together for a dinner party, though this time the mood
is evidently more somber, due in part to Percival’s absence, as well as the fact that the
characters are older and feel increasingly closer to death. The final part of the novel is
told entirely from Bernard’s perspective, as he attempts to sum up his life. In doing so,
he mentions the others and how their lives have turned out, lamenting the fact that
Rhoda has killed herself. In the end, Bernard states that he views language as his
weapon against death, and a tool in his own personal struggle.

My Summary

This book is considered by many to be the author, Virginia Woolf most experimental
work. This book is quite thick but I still able to enjoyed the read without losing my focus.
I love this book because it shows me people’s different perspective about their lives. It
also tells about how people’s living their lives differently according to their goals and
ambitions. Even though this different characters perspective is really fun, sometimes I
got confused because there’s a lot of characters in this book. It makes me confused as I
sometimes forgot which characters is talking at the moment. As this book was published
in 1931, it probably one of the factor this book is filled with a few of complicated phrases
that I couldn’t understand the meaning but it is still a good reading overall.

Closure

I love this book because it actually shows me different realities of each different
characters in the story. It makes me realize that everyone will have different paths in
their life. It also shows me that everyone have their own struggles and happiness in life.
It shows me that sometimes life is not always great and there will be the bad days in life.
This book give me a lot values. I also got to learn new words that I never encountered in
my other reading experience so I guess it is a great experience to be able to learn the
meanings of each words. I would recommend it for people who might want to read
something that is much more different than what they were always read.I would rate
this book 8.5 out of 10.

The Great Gatsby

 Title: The Great Gatsby
 Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald
 Publisher: Simon and Schuster
 Year of Publishment: 1925
 Price: RM 38.88

Book Summary

This story first started with introduction of Nick Carraway, a young man from
Minnesota, moves to New York in 1922 to learn about business. He rents a house in the
West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy area populated by the new rich, who have
made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who are
prone to massive displays of wealth. Nick’s neighbour in West Egg is a man named Jay
Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic mansion and throws parties every Saturday night.
Unlike the other inhabitants of West Egg, Nick was educated at Yale and has social
connections in East Egg, a fashionable area of Long Island home to the established
upper class. Nick went to East Egg one evening for dinner with his cousin, Daisy
Buchanan, and her husband Tom, his former classmates at Yale. They introduce him to
Jordan Baker, a beautiful woman who he begins a romantic relationship. Nick learns
about Daisy and Tom’s marriage. Jordan tells him that Tom has a lover, Myrtle Wilson,
who lives at a grey industrial dumping ground between West Egg and New York City.
Not long after this revelation, he went to New York City with Tom and Myrtle. Myrtle
begins to taunt Tom about Daisy, and Tom breaks her nose as responses . Nick
eventually gets invited to one of Gatsby’s parties. He meet Jordan Baker at the party,
and they meet Gatsby, a young man who has a remarkable smile, and calls everyone
“old sport.” Gatsby asks to speak to Jordan alone. Through Jordan, Nick learns more
about his neighbour. Gatsby tells Jordan that he knew Daisy and is deeply in love with
her. He spends many nights staring at the green light at the end of her dock, across the
bay from his mansion. Gatsby simply wants to impress Daisy with his extravagant
parties and lifestyle. Gatsby wants Nick to arrange a reunion between himself and

Daisy. Nick invites Daisy for tea at his house, without telling her that Gatsby will be
there. After an awkward reunion, their love rekindled, they begin an affair. After a
short time, Tom grows suspicious of his wife’s relationship with Gatsby. At a luncheon at
the Buchanans’ house, Gatsby stares at Daisy with such passion that Tom realizes
Gatsby is in love with her. Though Tom is himself involved in an affair, he is outraged
by the thought that his wife could be unfaithful to him. He went to New York City,
where he confronts Gatsby in a suite at the Plaza Hotel. Tom tells Daisy that Gatsby is a
criminal and his fortune comes from bootlegging alcohol and other illegal activities.
Daisy realizes that her loyalty is to Tom, and sends her back to East Egg with Gatsby,
attempting to prove that Gatsby can’t not hurt him. When Nick, Jordan, and Tom drive
through the valley of ashes, however, they discover that Gatsby’s car has struck and
killed Myrtle. They rush back to Long Island, where Gatsby told Nick that Daisy was
driving the car when it struck Myrtle, but Gatsby intends to take the blame. The next
day, Tom tells Myrtle’s husband, George, that Gatsby was the driver of the car. George,
who came to the conclusion that the driver of the car that killed Myrtle must have been
her lover, finds Gatsby in the pool at his mansion and shoots him dead. He then kills
himself. Nick arrange a small funeral for Gatsby, break up with Jordan, and moves
back to Midwest to escape the disgust, he feels for the people around Gatsby's life and
for the lack of morality among the wealthy on the East Coast. Nick reflects that just as
Gatsby’s dream of Daisy was corrupted by money and dishonesty, the American dream
of happiness and individualism has become a pursuit of wealth. Though Gatsby’s power
to transform his dreams into reality is what makes him “great,” Nick thinks that the era
of dreaming both Gatsby’s dream and the American dream is over.

My Review

The Great Gatsby undeniably one of the most notable books by the
American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. This book is much thinner than I
predicted so it does not take a lot of time to finish the book. It was a great
reading experience overall because it was easy to understand the plot of
the story and where is the story heading to. However, this novel contains a
lot of words that quite foreign in my personal vocabulary. But on the
bright side, I able to discover new words to be added into my personal

vocabulary so I can in them in the near future. Since this book was
published in 1925, it brings us to New York in the Jazz Age that I find really
interesting but some readers might felt boring as they were more
interested in more contemporary setting.

Closure

I really love this book because it is classic and timeless even though some
times have already passed. This book gives me a lot of information about
the lifestyle of the people from the Jazz Age in America. This book does
give me a lot of impacts and moral values. The word that was chosen by
the author quite interesting and a little complicated for me as I had to look
up the dictionary to be able to understand the phrases. Other than that,
this book took me to the suburbs in New York City known as West and East
Egg along the northern shore of Long Island which about almost a hundred
years ago. This story is also about how one’s desire can be deadly. In my
opinion, this book is suitable for teenagers and adult. I would definitely
recommend people to read it. I would rate this book 9 out 10 as I really
enjoyed my time reading it.

My Review

Never Give Up is a book filled with a lot of interviews of successful leading
professionals. This book is not something that I typically read. This book is
a quick read with 93 pages so I was able to finish the reading in one sitting.
This book was filled with a lot of great information. However if you have
no business background and don’t understand it like myself, most of the
information will go right over your head. So there were definitely some
parts that that I couldn’t understand, but there were certain questions such
as “What does success mean to you” and “What does it takes to be a good
leader?” were easy enough to understand. But I still enjoyed reading it
regardless.

Closure

Overall the interviews in this book were informative and interesting to
read Even there were parts that I failed to understand, I still got a lot of
knowledge through reading this book. I would definitely recommend this
book to people who are interested to be a leader or want to get involved in
business field. I would rate this book 6 out of 10.

Insurgent

 Title: Insurgent
 Author: Veronica Roth
 Publisher: Harper Collins
 Year of Publishment: 2012
 Price: RM 23.24

Book Summary

Insurgent picks up where Divergent left off, with Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Peter,
and Marcus heading out of the city to Amity headquarters where some
members of the broken-up Abnegation have gone for protection. Tris is
taunted by nightmares of shooting Will, the friend that she killed while he
was under the simulation. The Amity, led by representative Johanna Reyes,
agree to shelter the refugees as long as they remain peaceful. Soon,
however, Erudite and Dauntless traitors arrive at Amity to seek the
refugees, and after a heated fight the refugees have no choice but to leave
and escape back into the city. Marcus reveals to Tris that the
reason Jeanine attacked in the first place was to steal some essential
information that Abnegation had been trusted with to keep them from
revealing it to the city. Tobias does not believe this, but Tris does.On the
train Tris and her friends encounter a group of factionless and head with

them to the factionless headquarters in an old warehouse. Tris is astonished
to find out that Evelyn, Tobias's mother, is leading the factionless, but
Tobias has known she is alive for a while now. Evelyn and the factionless
plan to usurp Erudite and create a society without factions, and Evelyn
wants Tobias's help rallying the Dauntless to their cause. Tris and Tobias
soon head to Candor headquarters, where the rest of the loyal Dauntless
have taken shelter, but they are immediately arrested upon arrival. The
leader of Candor, Jack Kang, saw footage of Tris and Tobias in the
Dauntless control room, supposed they were the ones running the
simulation, and accused them of crimes against humanity. They face a trial
immediately, and have to relay the details of what happened under the
influence of Candor's famous truth serum. They are cleared of charges, but
Tris reveals that she killed Will. This is the first time Tobias
and Christina (Will's love interest) have heard of this, and Christina feels
that Tris has betrayed her.Traitor Dauntless invade Candor headquarters
seeking people who are Divergent, led by Eric, a former Dauntless leader.
They shoot needles into everyone's arms that inject them with a simulation
transmitter so that they will be susceptible to simulations at all times. The
traitor Dauntless capture Tris, but she takes a gun out of her back pocket
and stabs Eric, severely injuring him. Loyal Dauntless stream into the room
and drive the traitors off.Tobias has been repeatedly called a coward
because of the information he revealed under the truth serum, so one night
at dinner he beats up his father, Marcus, to prove that he is not. Tris goes to
Marcus afterward and reminds him that he could use her help in trying to
get back the information that Erudite stole. Meanwhile, Jack Kang believes
that having the Divergent in Candor puts them all in danger, and arranges
a meeting with one of Jeanine's representatives to try and negotiate a deal
to protect Candor.Tris and a few of her friends go to eavesdrop this
meeting, and realize that Jeanine is speaking through the Dauntless traitor
she has sent to represent her using an earpiece. Tris knows Jeanine must be
nearby; however, before she can figure out where she is, one of her
friends, Lynn, shoots Max. A fight ensues, and Tris tries to go after Jeanine,
but one of their friends is injured and they have to take her back to
Candor. Tobias is angry at Tris for continuously risking her life so senselessly,
and threatens to end their relationship. They know that Jack will agree to
Jeanine's demands to turn over all the Divergent, so they decide the best
thing to do is return to Dauntless headquarters, where they will all be safer.
They hold a Dauntless meeting and choose new leaders, ending up with Tori,

a man named Harrison, and Tobias as leaders. They then execute Eric
officially for crimes against Dauntless. Finally, they head back to the
Dauntless compound, cover all the surveillance cameras with paint, and try
to achieve some semblance of normalcy. Christina at last forgives Tris for
killing Will.Tobias takes Tris to meet Evelyn on a train, and they form an
alliance between Dauntless and the factionless. Tris is not pleased with this,
because she thinks Evelyn is using Tobias. Erudite soon strikes again with
another simulation, making Dauntless members commit suicide every
other night until one Divergent turns him or herself over for
experimentation. Tris knows she has to stop this, so she lies to Tobias and
Christina and turns herself in at Erudite headquarters, where Jeanine runs
experiments on her to try and create a simulation that actually affects a
Divergent mind. Tobias shows up there too, presumably to sacrifice himself
and die along with Tris.Jeanine reveals the secret weapon that has allowed
her to manipulate Tris so effectively: Caleb, her brother. He betrayed Tris
and their family in order to remain loyal to his faction, Erudite, and help
Jeanine. The experiments continue, and Tobias finally reveals to Tris that
he did not come here on a suicide mission, he came here to scope out
headquarters and find Erudite's central control room so that when the
factionless and Dauntless invade they will know where to target. He tells
Tris to hold out for two more weeks, even though she now wants to die. Tris
continues to resist the simulations, and tells Jeanine that she will never be
able to control her. Jeanine, angry, tells Tris that she will resume testing on
Tobias instead, and schedules Tris's execution for the following morning.
Peter, Tris's old enemy, leads her to her execution and appears to injects
her with a death serum. However, this is not actually a death serum; Peter
replaced it with one that merely causes paralysis, and sneaks her body out
of the room so she can escape with Tobias. Peter did this because he could
not stand to be in her debt. They break out of Erudite and make it to
Abnegation headquarters, where the factionless have camped out. They
are about to begin their plan to bring down Erudite and abolish the
factions, but Tris decides that it is more important that she help Marcus get
this vital information from out of Erudite's hands before the factionless
destroy everything. She enlists Christina's help, and they go to Johanna to
try to get Amity on their side. When Amity refuses to get involved, Johanna
breaks away from her faction because she knows stopping the violence in
the city is the right thing to do. Back in the city, Tris and the others head to
Erudite headquarters to find the computer containing the stolen

Abnegation information. The factionless have already begun their invasion.
Tris and Marcus make it to Jeanine's private lab, where Tris fights a
simulation in order to get past security. Once past, she finds Tori with a gun
pointed at Jeanine, about to kill her. Tris knows she needs Jeanine to find
the information on her computer and tries to stop Tori from shooting, but it
is too late; she shoots, and Jeanine dies. Tori thinks Tris is a traitor, and
sends her down to be tried with all the other traitors. Tobias, however,
finally believes that what Tris says is true, and forces Caleb to help disarm
the security system on the computer so they can get the information. Just
as Evelyn is talking about how there will no longer be any factions, Tobias
comes down and plays the video that he has retrieved. It is a woman
speaking about how the factions were created as an experiment in order to
get rid of the flaws in human nature and create Divergent people with
flexible, virtuous minds. Lastly, she reveals that she will be joining the
society, too, voluntarily forgetting everything and taking the name Edith
Prior.

My Summary

I really love The Divergent Series book especially Insurgent. I always love
reading science fiction and dystopian world book so this is really type of
book that I would always read. This book is really thick as I expected so it
takes some time for me to actually finish the book. However, I find that
some of the words used in this story is quite inappropriate for younger
readers. There is also a lot of words that I never heard before so I guess it’s
fine since I got to learn new words just by reading this book. I really
enjoyed reading this because of the adventures that these characters going
through make me feel like I’m the one who’s experiencing it . Also, the way
the author describes the story was so fantastic and perfect.

Closure

I honestly really enjoyed my time while reading this book. This book is
perfect for me who is a big fan pf dystopian world book. Even though I had
to look up the dictionary to find the meaning of some phrases, it doesn’t
really bother me because that is one of my learning method. This book
make imagine something that was very magical. I would recommend this
book to people who loves reading science fiction books. I wouldn’t suggest
this book to younger readers as it had a few inappropriate words. I

guarantee to people who read this they will feel very satisfied. I would rate
this book 10 out of 10.
