POTPOURRI

The word 'POTPOURRI' comes into English from the French word potpourri. The French term has two

connotations. It is the French name for Spanish stew with a wide variety of ingredients called 'olla

podrida', a speciality of the city of Burgos. The word was taken as a calque by the French military during

the Napoleonic occupation of burgos (1808-1813). The word pot in French has the same meaning as it

does in English, while the word Pourri, like Spanish podrida, means rotten. Many plant species are used

in potpourri. In fact, a 2015 study at the royal Botanic Gardens identified 455 species from over 100

families. This included algae, fungi and lichens. A few toxic ingredients have been found in fruits such as

Strychnic vomica, the strychnine tree. Plant materials used in potpourri include. Potpourri has been

used in rooms since ancient times, in a variety of ways, including just scattering it on the floor. In early

17th century France, fresh herbs and flowers were gathered beginning in spring and continuing

throughout the summer. The herbs were left for a day or two to become limp, then layered with coarse

sea salt. the aging mixture was stirred occasionally as layers were added to it. Often the mixture would

ferment or even mold as the summer went by. In fall spices would be added to the unsightly grey mix

until a pleasant fragrance was achieved. Then scent preserving fixatives were added. The finished

potpourri was set out in special pots with perforated lids to perfume rooms.

Wings of Hope Poem on Covid - 19……..

Oh wind, why do you blow? We may be young or old,
Oh river, why do you flow? But we must be bold,
Oh sun,why do you glow? Against the enemy untold.
We can't go to malls,
Even in plight, Nor can we go to waterfalls.
You do not waver? Because this virus is a scaring,
Sending our spines into a shivering.
To nurture,to grow If you have to go out, think twice,
And for life to show Wear your mask, be wise.
After coming home,sanitize,
In these lands, And wash your hands thrice.
Barren and dead Covid- 19 is the name,
It is playing hide and seek game.
For the bloom of hope and happiness By following the rules,
Always finds its way, we can ensure the endgame.

Through thorns of grief -Mriganki Semwal
And thickets of despair Class - 12 F

Alas! The cruelty of time
Affects even the unwavering

And they too one day
Must succumb

But just as a phoenix rises from the ashes,
Life will find a way,

And the phoenix will once again
Spread its wings,

For the flighty temptress awaits!
