Introduction

Message from the Founder

Many people ask me what caused me to start Solberg. Having spent most of my career in sales, I
was never quite satisfied. I wanted something more. I wanted the power to improve upon the
products I sold. During a position selling electric motors, I became familiar with air compressors
and blowers. It was then that I discovered the market’s need for an improved filter design.

I made my first prototype for an inlet filter with a lower pressure drop and better silencing in
1966 and was pleased by the positive response I received. Thanks to a bit of creativity and a bit
of luck, the first tubular filter silencer was born. Since then, the engineers at Solberg have
continued to improve on this and many other innovative filter designs.

Today, thousands of customers depend on our filtration and separation products, and our
business operations continue to expand worldwide. Our exceptional employees and suppliers go
the extra mile in design, manufacturing, quality control and customer service, making Solberg
the company it is today.

Get to know us, work with us, and you’ll see why so many people rely on us for all their filtration,
separation, and silencing needs.

Introduc on  Air Filtration Selection Guidelines

General: For peak output performance from a compressor, blower, vacuum pump, engine, or any other
machine that consumes air, one must have clean, unrestricted air. Filters were born out of this basic need.
Proper filtra on can help stabilize the working environment within a given piece of equipment even when
the external condi ons may be quite severe. A cri cal component in crea ng the right working condi ons is
the sizing of the filter. With the correct filter size, one’s piece of equipment will operate smoothly over a
significant period of me.

A major factor in filtra on and filter sizing is Air Velocity through a given media. Generally, the slower the
velocity of air through a media the higher the filter efficiency and, conversely, the lower the pressure drop.
This translates into op mizing an air system’s performance, which is a major goal in any system.

#1: Always begin with the filter cartridge requirements when sizing a filter housing. Once the appropriate
element has been selected then move on to the housing requirements.

#2: Always ask or specify a filter based on a micron ra ng with filtra on efficiencies. (Sta ng that one has
or needs "a 1‐micron filter" alone for example is misleading or confusing as no efficiency ra ng has actually
been specified. A 1‐micron filter at 97‐% efficiency can be less efficient than a 5‐micron filter at 99%
efficiency.) For proper air system performance in light and industrial duty environments, a filter with a
minimum of 99% filtra on efficiency at 5 micron is required.

#3: Size your filter correctly by understanding the impact air velocity through a media has on efficiency and
pressure drop. Maintain the suggested Air‐to‐Media ra os listed at www.solbergmfg.com on the external
environment lis ngs and filtra on efficiency needs.
Notes:

‐ Ra os are based on the assump on that one wants to maintain the same pressure drop (or less) as a
5 micron filter element.

‐ Air to Media ra os are our suggested ra os. Some catalog items, because of customer demand,
have resulted in ra os that are higher than our suggested ra os. In those cases, the life expectancies
of the elements are reduced.
Example: A reciproca ng (piston) air compressor will be installed in a cement pit. The compressor
is a 25HP unit with a 1‐1/2" inlet connec on for air. The inlet airflow is 80 SCFM (136 m3/h). It is
feared that very fine cement dust (approximately 1‐4 micron) will destroy the compressor very
quickly. What filter should be offered?
Answer: Based on #2, an Industrial Grade 4‐micron polyester or an Industrial Grade 1‐micron
polyester would be two immediate choices. For the 4‐micron polyester, an element with 5 to 8 2
of media should be used while for the 1‐micron polyester; an element with 8 to 16 2 of media
should be used.

#4: Pressure Drop is also caused by the dirt holding capacity of the element. As the element fills up with
dirt, the pressure drop increases. The ra os that were listed in #2 also take into account the desire to select
a filter that minimizes the maintenance required during the life me of the machine. It is important to
document the pressure drop of a given filter when it is clean and then replace it (or clean it) when the
pressure drop increases by 15‐20” H2O from the original reading.

#5: The inlet connec on greatly influences the overall pressure drop of the inlet filter system. To minimize
the restric on contributed by an inlet filter silencer, a velocity of 6,000 /min or less is suggested through
the outlet pipe. See www.solbergmfg.com for suggested flows.

Vacuum Pump Discharge Filters Selection Guidelines Introduc on

General: Developments in product design allow for the possible selec on of Vacuum Discharge Filters
based on the type of equipment being used. It is possible to iden fy the appropriate grade of aerosol
discharge filter because of the extensive research completed by the Solberg R&D Department. Please follow
the below rules to correctly size your oil mist discharge filter. If further consulta on is required, please
contact Solberg.

#1: Discharge filter systems, designed for compressed air systems, repeatedly fail in a vacuum pump
applica on. The first considera on for a properly sized vacuum pump filter is to determine the type of
vacuum pump being used. The par cle size distribu on and mass of oil aerosol discharging from a vacuum
pump is as varied as the number of separator tank designs u lized by the industry. The main pump types
are Rotary Vane, Rotary Screw, Rotary Piston, Liquid Ring, and Reciproca ng Vacuum Pumps. Each type of
pump produces its own specific oil discharge characteris cs and requires the appropriate media make‐up to
effec vely capture and drain oil aerosols.

#2: Determine the type of oil being used in the vacuum pump. Trade names, viscosity/grade of oil, and the
lubricant base (mineral, synthe c, etc.) are all useful in determining the discharge aerosol characteris cs.

#3: Determine how much oil the pump consumes under normal opera ng condi ons. Typical consump on
rates are gallons or liters per hour. The amount of oil consumed is typically the amount of oil being
discharged.

#4: Pump opera ng cycles including vacuum range, temperature fluctua ons, contaminant gases or vapors,
and hours of opera on per day/week. Also, determine the maximum pressure drop or filter restric on the
system will allow.

#5: Determine the opera ng temperature at the discharge connec on. If it is above +180° F (+80° C),
methods of cooling the aerosol should be considered.

#6: Note the horsepower of the pump, the outlet connec on, and the airflow.

#7: When an external unit is to be used as the primary or sole discharge filter in a system, contact Solberg
to review the applica on.

#8: In the case where an exis ng air/oil separator (internal or external) is already used, it is important to
specify the desired goal for a second filter. Is it planned to have a mul ‐staged system for severe or
extreme duty applica ons, or is there a requirement for excep onally clean discharge air? If a mul ple
stage system is needed, try to iden fy the primary stage unit and the purpose for the second stage.

#9: Consider where to install the filter. Where possible it is best to install in moderate temperature +35° to
+100° F (+2° to +37°C) ) environments and avoid freezing condi ons to ensure the oil drains freely without
causing undue backpressure to the vacuum pump.
Once as much informa on as possible is obtained, send the data to Solberg for our review and/or review
our data sheets in the “Product” sec on of our website, www.solbergmfg.com.

Choosing the Best Filter for your Equipment

A. Connection & Airflow Known: When the connection & airflow is known: Filter Silencers
1. Select appropriate connection style. (i.e.: MPT, Flange, NPSC, etc.)
2. Check assembly SCFM (flow) rating. Compare with your required airflow. (Note: Assembly flow
ratings are based on 6,000 FPM or 30m/sec for a given connection size to achieve low pressure
drop performance. When required flow exceeds assembly flow rating, the pressure drop through
the outlet connection will increase. In such cases select by element SCFM (flow) rating.)
3. When required flow rating matches connection size; skip to “C. Selecting Elements”.

B. Unknown Connection: When the connection size is unknown, flexible, or the required flow rating
exceeds assembly flow rating:
1. Match required flow rating with the element flow rating.
2. Choose related connection size.

C. Selecting Elements: The filter performance is influenced by the actual application duty and the
equipment it is installed on. Regular maintenance checks and proper servicing is required.
Application Duty Descriptions:
Industrial Duty: Clean workshop or clean outdoor environment - small element sizing is sufficient.
Severe Duty: Dirty workshop, wastewater – medium to large element is recommended.
Extreme Duty: Cement, steel making, plastics or dusty material conveying – Largest element sizing is
recommended.
1. Select media required by your application. Options include:
a. Standard media
1. Polyester: All purpose; it withstands pulses, moisture and oily air
2. Paper: Mostly dry, smooth flow applications
b. Special Media: For a variety of micron levels and media types, see the “Filter Media
Specifications” in the Replacement Element Section or contact Solberg.
2. Select element size by matching the element with the anticipated duty and upsize accordingly.

Filter Assembly Maintenance

Request the appropriate maintenance manual for more in-depth information from your Solberg
representative or through www.solbergmfg.com.

Element Maintenance

Solberg elements should be replaced once the pressure drop reaches 15-20” H2O above the initial pressure
drop of the installation. Cleaning an element is also an option.

Solberg recommends replacing dirty elements for optimal performance. Any damage which results from
by-pass or additional pressure drop created by element cleaning is the sole responsibility of the operator.

Note: The overall performance of a filter element is altered once cleaned. The initial pressure drop after
subsequent cleanings will be greater than the original, clean pressure drop of the element. After each
cleaning, the pressure drop will continue to increase. Under all circumstances, the initial pressure drop of
the element needs to be maintained at less than 15” H2O.

If the pressure drop exceeds 20” H2O at start-up; it should be replaced with a new element. With many
types of equipment, the maximum pressure drop allowed will be dictated by the ability of the equipment
to perform to its rated capacity. Under all circumstances, the operator should avoid exceeding the
manufacturer’s recommended maximum pressure drop for their specific equipment.

Examples of LQB Silencer Filter with and without filter element installed. Why Solberg’s LQB Series?
Filter element easily slides out the side port for servicing.
LQB Series helps make enclosures feasible and
simplifies the maintenance process. Typical filter
silencers require service area above the filter
housing which increases the height and cost of the
enclosure and makes servicing the unit difficult. The
LQB Filter Silencer has an easy access side port
which simplifies servicing and lowers the cost of
your enclosure dramatically.

Technical Data
Inlet Filter Assemblies

Choosing the Best Filter for your Equipment

A. Connection & Airflow Known: When the connection & airflow is known: Filter Assemblies

1. Polyester: All purpose; it withstands pulses, moisture, and oily air

Pop Up Style Pressure Drop Gauge
Inlet Filter Assemblies

Filter Assemblies Benefits

• Monitors Filter Continuously Note: The monitor gauge has a 1/8” connection. It
• Easy Filter Maintenance is mounted either on the weatherhood or on the
• Filter Element Life Maximized outlet pipe depending on the filter assembly.
• Downtime Reduced
• Graduated Restriction Readings Filter Gauge shows both inches & mm ratings

Features & Specifications

Our Pop Up style pressure drop gauge shows the
amount of filter element restriction and how much life
the element has left. This is a convenient and
inexpensive solution to receiving the maximum usage
from every element.

The yellow indicator in the filter monitor gauge drops as
the dirt accumulates on the filter element. The element
is ready for change out or servicing when the yellow
indicator reaches the red zone. This allows you to
determine the condition of the filter element even after
the equipment has been shut down.

The element should be serviced or replaced at the
maximum noted pressure drop or at the manufacturer’s
recommended level.

For use on inlet filter silencer and inlet filters. Contact
Solberg to add 1/8” tap hole to the appropriate location.
See mounting photo for placement.

Technical Data
Inlet Vacuum Filters

Choosing the Best Filter for your Equipment

A. Connection & Airflow Known: When the connection & airflow is known: Inlet Vacuum Filters

1. Polyester: All purpose; it withstands pulses, moisture, and oily air
2. Paper: Mostly dry, smooth flow applications
b. Special Media: For a variety of micron levels and media types, see the “Filter Media
Specifications” in the Replacement Element Section.
2. Select Element size by matching the element with the anticipated duty and upsize accordingly.

Filter Assembly Maintenance

Request the appropriate maintenance manual for more in-depth information from your Solberg
representative or through www.solbergmfg.com.

Element Maintenance

Solberg elements should be replaced, once the pressure drop reaches 15-20” H2O above the initial
pressure drop of the installation.
