CAREER

Tun Hussein, who came from a family with deep nationalistic spirit and
political roots, resigned from the civil service to go into politics. In 1949,
he became the first youth chief of UMNO (United Malays National
Organization), a party his father helped establish. In 1950, he was elected
the UMNO secretary general. Tun Hussein however left UMNO in 1951
to join his father in forming the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP).

With IMP losing momentum, Tun Hussein went to London to study law
and was called to the Bar and admitted as a member of the Honourable
Society of Lincoln's Inn, qualifying as a Barrister-at-Law. He came back
as a certified lawyer and practiced in Kuala Lumpur.

6

Hussein Onn returned to politics in 1968 after being persuaded by the
then Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak to re-join UMNO He
stood and won the general election in 1969 and was appointed minister
of education. Tun Hussein's meteoric rise continued on 13 August 1973
when he replaced the late Ismail Abdul Rahman as Deputy Prime
Minister. On 15 January 1976, he was appointed Prime Minister of
Malaysia after the death of Tun Razak.

7

Hussein is known for emphasizing the problem of unity through
policies aimed at correcting economic imbalances between the various
communities found in Malaysia. For example, April 20, 1981 saw the
launch of the National Unit Trust Scheme. He also gave serious
consideration to the concept of Rukun Tetangga (neighbourhood
surveillance scheme) and combating the threat of drugs.

He underwent a coronary bypass in early 1981. On July 17 of the same
year, he retired from active politics and resigned as prime minister due
to health problems. He was replaced by Mahathir Mohamad, his

EXEMPLARY
LEADERSHIP VALUES

The lesson I have learned when I read the history of Tun
Hussein Onn was that my generation should appreciate what he fought
for in his time.

For example, Tun Hussein Onn is known as the father of unity.
My generation now needs to maintain the long-standing unity in
Malaysia and avoid sensitive issues related to races. Since my
generation is more into social media, then my role is to cultivate the
spirit of unity on social media by setting an example of friendship with
various races and respecting them with good speech.

In addition, when Tun Hussein Onn became the first Minister
of Education, he was upholding the Malay language as the most
important language and English language is compulsory in all types of
schools as the language of submission. So, I think it is important for
me to learn multiple languages to ensure my generation becomes an
educated generation with various abilities.

CONCLUSION

In a nutshell, as Johore natives we should be
proud to have a good leader who brings Malaysia
to the national level. As a result of the
contribution of Tun Hussein Onn, we can see
Malaysia now is known as a unique country and
united even though there are living in a
multiracial country such as Malay, Indian,
Chinese and others. This is his greatest
contribution that we should preserve.
We can see the contribution of Tun Hussein Onn
