TWT on-the-spot PHOTO. The position was so attractive that it attracted thousands of applicants. Out of the many letters and resumes that were sent into the human resources department this letter absolutely stood out; “At the moment I am selling furniture for a rival company but I suggest that you send someone into the show room where I am currently selling furniture and this person casually pretend that they want to buy some new expensive furniture. When you come into the showroom you will easily identify me as I have bright red hair.” The director of human resources decided himself to take this applicant at his word and pretended to be a prospective furniture buyer. He was so impressed with the warm manner of the red head as well as his obvious knowledge of the product he was selling. It was no surprise that the redhead succeeded in getting the position he was seeking! The message here is that when people show initiative, they are justly confident in their position, and they have a healthy sense of ambition then great things can often happen. Throughout the Gospels Jesus of Nazareth constantly challenged people to move where they were in life to another position and great things constantly happened! Early in John’s Gospel we heard the first two disciples ask Jesus, ‘Where do you live?” and the memorable reply was simply “Come and see!” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain in Sydney A well-known American company advertised a newly created position in its sales department. Jimmy passed away on Wednesday December 6, at 9.10pm, two and a half years short of his 100th birthday. The City of Ryde Council held a minute silence in his memory last Tuesday night and Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM released this Mayoral Minute. “I advise Council of the death of Jimmy Shaw, a well-known local identity,’’ Mayor Yedelian said. “Mr Shaw who was 98 was a long time resident of North Ryde. “Jimmy was a keen gardener, political activist, jazz musician and environmental warrior. “He worked for 13 years at Our Lady Queen of Peace Gladesville where he taught gardening to the students and helped build the school’s sustainable garden. “He was also a recipient of a City of Ryde Gardening Competition prize. “Jimmy played the drums in the jazz band Shawnuff and was a keen musician. “He was a political activist and strong supporter of the Greens and was also a political candidate himself in local council elections. “Each World Environment Day, Jimmy erected a banner in Ryde Park to draw attention to the day and took an active interest in all matters relating to the environment.” Labor Clr Penny Pedersen and Liberal Clr and Ryde MP Jordan Lane also paid tribute to Jimmy and described him as intelligent, articulate and deeply committed to The Greens with a keen sense of humour and a generous spirit. Councillor Lane said he had spoken with Jimmy at Top Ryde Shopping Centre only days before his passing and said he remained passionate about the environment. A Memorial Service for James Johnston (Jimmy) Shaw will be held on January 10, 2024 at Paddington RSL from 3pm. ☐ The late Jimmy Shaw. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (G. The citation with the Papal Honour recognises Brother Nicholas Harsas’ “extraordinary efforts in the context of Catholic education, as teacher and principal” within the Archdiocese of Sydney and across Australia. Brother Nicholas has also been appointed the Province Leader of the Patrician Brothers of Australia and Papua New Guinea. “It is both a humbling and exciting position and a role that I am looking forward to after 27 years as a school principal,’’ he said. He is a former student at Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Gladesville and Holy Cross College and his first teaching position was at St Charles School in Ryde. “My mother, Margaret, is a life-long resident of Tennyson Point and I continue to spend time in Tennyson Point with her each weekend and my brother and family also live in Gladesville,’’ he said. “We are all avid TWT readers and have been for decades.” Brother Nicholas Harsas FSP OAM from Holy Cross College in Ryde has received a Papal Honour. ☐ Brother Nicholas Harsas FSP OAM is pictured with his mother Margaret and Archbishop Anthony Fisher during the award presentation ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral. JB’s World Vale Robert Senior (1/1/1948 – 13/12/2023) Robert made enormous contributions as a volunteer in Ryde, often finding himself to be a sounding board for many in positions of authority. He was a member of the Meadowbank – West Ryde Progress Association, Secretary of the West Ryde Chamber of Commerce, community representative of the Northern Districts Planning Panel, and Secretary of the West Ryde Easter Parade & Fair Committee. However, Robert arguably was most at home with the more personal side of volunteering, interacting directly with members of the Chai Time Community Group, Good Life Chorus (a dementia friendly choir), bus driver for CCA NSW and as a volunteer gardener at Addington House, Ryde. Robert was also an annual volunteer for Salvation Army Red Shield Appeals and was a member of the C3 Church Top Ryde. His contributions to volunteering were recognised by the City of Ryde at the 2021 Australia Day Ceremony and 2021 Volunteer Recognition Awards. In his former life, Robert had been a member of the Australian Army, specialising in logistics between 1969 and 1997, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on his birthday 1st January 1998. Following his time in the army, he busied himself with his own consultancy company providing services to NSW Local and State Governments as well as large multi-national logistic support companies (based in Afghanistan) and the UN. Robert is survived by his son Ben, daughter Ellen, grandson Kai and sister Karen. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a celebration of Robert’s life, this afternoon (Wednesday, December 20) at 2.30pm at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium East Chapel, 199 Delhi Road North Ryde. Following the flag raising, Terry hosted a surprise 101st birthday party for Col Moir at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club with the Robara crew as guests. The Eastwood Flag Raising Ceremony was also an opportunity for the reunion of the 1975 Drummoyne Sailing Club Champions. The crew comprised Bob Stuart as skipper, Barry Shaw as fourth-hand (chief organiser), Dave Senogles as forward hand and Col Moir as sheet hand. The race of 1975 represented their third club win within 10 years. In that time they also claimed the State Championships. Their 16’ skiff was named Robara, a name derived from Bob (Rob) and his wife Barbara. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 20 December, 2023 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT By Charles Amos of Hunters Hill Our year of worthy causes At the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill, we’ve have had a rewarding year doing what Rotary does best, raising funds for worthy causes. We use our professional skills to help the community, particularly youth and those with special needs. As volunteers, the spirit of giving is rewarding and many friendships are made in activities and at fund raising events. In the past year we have increased our membership and raised a record amount of funds. In April the Club celebrated our 65th Birthday, (being founded in 1958) with a Gala fundraiser at the ‘Baytree’ in Greenwich and provided funds for the NZ Cyclone victims in Napier. In August we hosted Maggie Beer AO with Prof. Ralph Martins AO in a ‘sell out’ fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Research and in October combined with our friends at Probus to raise funds for Dementia and Rotary projects. We thank the many entertainers involved at these functions for their free time and support. We worked jointly with the Hunters Hill Council on the inaugural Hunters Hill Spring Garden Competition 2023. Almost 500 attendees purchased tickets for the Open Garden day on Sunday, October 8 when the wining gardens were open as well as some magnificent showcase gardens in the local area. Many volunteers gave their time to assist with entry and security in the gardens, ensuring the success of the event. All funds raised were directed to improving the Hillman Orchard, situated behind the listed National Trust house, Vienna Cottage. Our Other Programs Our Rotary Tai Chi exercise program held in Weil Park each Tuesday and Thursday morning reached new heights. This program of routine low impact exercise The Rotary Club of Hunters Hill wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! has now been running for over 10 years with record levels of attendance. It helps keep members of the local community fit whilst funds raised go back into community projects. Next year in April, we will be conducting our 10th Rotary Car Safari, travelling to Victoria to discover Ned Kelly Country and funds raised from these and other events will be directed towards assisting the community and local Youth programs. During this year at enjoyable weekly meetings, we had some notable speakers and provided some ‘Pride of Workmanship’ awards. These are awards for service providers in our community who are worthy recipients, ‘doing it once and do it right’, making a difference. If you are interested in making a difference, being a volunteer or just looking for fun and comrardery you are welcome to join us as an active member of the Rotary Club. Meetings are held at the Hunters Hill Club on Wednesday evenings where we dine together and conduct our meetings. Our next 6.30pm meeting after the Christmas break is on Wednesday 17th January, 2024. Complements of the season to you all and thank you for your ongoing support. Charles Amos is President of the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill Celebrating the season I would also like to thank our dedicated staff and volunteers for their efforts throughout 2023. Without the involvement of all of these amazing people, we would not have been able to run our local events and projects so successfully. We held our last Council Meeting for the year on Monday evening, and will now have a short break before returning in 2024 to continue delivering services, major projects and events to the Hunters Hill community. Council offices will close at 12:00pm on Friday 22 December 2023 and reopen at 8.30am on Tuesday 2 January 2024. Waste collection, as well as The Yarn trading hours will continue as normal during the holiday period excluding public holidays. New Year Celebrations New Year’s Eve is always a big occasion on the Hunters Hill calendar and as per usual we are expecting many visitors to the peninsula to enjoy the festivities and fireworks display on our beautiful part of the harbor. With a unique panoramic view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Clarke’s Point Reserve is an incredible vantage point for watching the world-famous pyrotechnic and light display. Due to the geography of our Hunters Hill, Council is working closely with Police Officers from the Ryde Police Area Command to help ensure that New Year’s Eve is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Road closures and parking restrictions will be in place to ensure that the peninsula remains accessible for emergency services throughout the New Year’s Eve period. A ‘park and ride’ special event car park will operate at Boronia Park Ovals, connecting people with bus services to Clarkes Point. Whether you’re a resident or visitor to the area, please plan ahead to avoid any confusion on the night. See the New Year’s Eve page on our website for more details: www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/ nye. With Christmas only days away, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all in our community a safe and happy holiday. Outside of this exciting event, our beautiful local parks, reserves, waterways and walks are an excellent way to appreciate Hunters Hill and take advantage of some time off over the Christmas period. From all of us at Hunter’s Hill Council, we wish all in our community an enjoyable break and prosperous New Year ahead. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill TWT welcomes letters from our readers. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Sad news on- Jimmy Shaw Dear Sir, It was with sadness that I read of the passing of Jimmy Shaw. Having known him for 30 years he is to be praised for his environmental activism, preparedness to stand for public office and his gentlemanly manner. That tip of the flat cap is not to be forgotten or his standing up with other musicians to play ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ to farewell the late Neville Thomas OAM, fellow musician and Ryde Eisteddfod adjudicator. Such a tribute may now be applied to our late Jimmy. Thank you to the TWT for informing us of his interests and campaigns over the decades. LYN LANGTRY East Ryde Great carols event Dear Sir, Thank you to TWT, Ryde Council, Optus, Rotary and all the sponsors for putting on a magnificent Carols At North Ryde Common last Sunday night. It was a great community event for all of us in a turbulent year around the world. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Chinese market gardeners Dear Sir, Regarding the history of the Chinese market gardeners mentioned in the article about the Italians in Ryde (TWT 6/12/23) - congratulations on the book, which is wonderful! The memory pole installation in Santa Rosa park is a well deserved recognition. However, regarding the myths mentioned in the article about the Chinese Market Gardeners in the Ryde district, I would like to know where the information came from regarding the comments that the Chinese men were “drifters” who did not pay rates, nor vote and that they leased land, mostly defaulting on the payments, leaving the district. A recent publication about the Chinese-Australian Migration Corridor by Denis Byrne, Ien Ang and Phillip Mar revealed that the men were decent and extremely hard working but were severely restricted by the White Australia Policy which was a blemish on our history. I appreciate the immense contribution of the Italians in Ryde, but the Chinese also need recognition for their contribution in earlier days to supplying food for the growing population of the Ryde district. CHRISTINE SANDERSON Ryde Grocery prices Dear Sir, Here’s my submission on grocery prices. 1. The big supermarkets, like Coles, should have an equity issue and raise $8,000 million each. This would allow them to cut prices and still make an extra $800 million in profit. This is exactly what the big banks had to do in 2009, during a banking crisis. It worked a treat. It would cut the rate of return on capital from 30% to 15%, which is still a great profit. Woolworths could raise $10,000 million and make an extra $1 billion in profit, yet still cut grocery prices. 2. Big supermarkets should employ sharp executives from efficient companies, like Bunnings, Walmart, an Tesco, from the UK. 3. Casual staff could enjoy half tax rates, just like shearers and casual farm workers. Then their unnecessary penalty rates could be cut. 4. Excess spending by Government could be cut. Thus lower taxes, council rates, water rates, petrol taxes and diesel taxes. Australian government should be compared to our trading partners for efficency like in Singapore, and Hong Kong. 5. All the big-spending and wasteful Cabinet Ministers need to be hauled before the Senate committee these include Plibersek, Burke, Shorten and specially Chalmers. These are the people who caused the inflation via their excess tax and spend policy. 6. Bunnings should sell quality Greenhouses, so the public can grow their own vegetables. Personally, I grow most of my own fruit and vegetables. 7. Farmers who grow big surpluses of Potato, Bananas, pumpkins could be offered manufacfurers to convert them into flour for tough times ahead. 8. Farmers superphosphate bounty be restored, so plenty extra fruit and vegetables would be grown. Meet North Ryde RSL’s new chief: Joe Kelly NEW NORTH Ryde RSL Club CEO Joe Kelly is on a mission - to realise the potential of one of the local area’s favourite community organisations. The recipe for success for Mr Kelly - who’s from a marketing background - isn’t overly complicated: Listen to members, give them more of what they want and when they visit the club, give them an experience that makes them want to come back. And if the Brisbane-born CEO’s recent track record in charge of the Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club is anything to go by, locals can feel confident he’ll make things happen. “In five years at the Broncos, we’ve done a lot and I would have stayed there a bit longer but this opportunity came up,” Mr Kelly told The Weekly Times. “I had a career goal to come to Sydney. My brother lives in Sydney. My partner lives in Sydney. And it was just the right timing and the right opportunity.” At NRRSL, he has some challenges to get his teeth into. One is improving the club’s financial position through physical improvements to its premises and a better overall offering for members, covering food and beverage, gaming facilities and community engagement. The other is the significant task of untangling the future of NRRSL’s TG Millner Fields site and seniors housing proposal in Eastwood, which he said “we’ll talk about another day.” “Overall, the club needs a bit of a renovation and probably needs a bit of a restructure,” he said. “We need to look at certain marketing aspects - I’ve got a marketing background - and I’ll just bring a different perspective. “Every manager brings a different perspective and I look forward to making the club very successful.” Mr Kelly said what he’d noticed so far was that the club had great members and great staff and that there were a lot of areas in the club. “We’ve just gonna get the flow a bit better and probably tighten up a few things,” he said. “But most importantly, listen to our members and find out what they really want - we’re doing some surveys at the moment - and change our product mix accordingly.” One area in which Mr Kelly has wasted no time is the upgrading of the club’s food and beverage services, starting with the launch of a new menu (see advertisement this page) at its flagship Riverviews Restaurant. “It’s well overdue. It’ll be a lot fresher and the menu will be a fair bit larger and presented spot on,” he said. “You go to any successful club and food’s very important. “I’m very passionate about our food, making sure it not just looks and smells good but tastes good, at a reasonable price point.” During his five year tenure at the Broncos Leagues Club in Red Hill, Queensland, Mr Kelly rebranded the organisation, steered it through the devastation caused by government-imposed Covid restrictions and lockdowns increased its membership and profits. “The past financial year has been the most satisfying through my five year tenure at the club,” he wrote in the Broncos 2022- 23 Annual Report. “Financially the club performed extremely well with a net profit over $1.56m from a revenue base of $17.8m which was an increase of 18.44%. “The outstanding season from the Brisbane Broncos has certainly helped the club from a food and beverage perspective and we have been able to capitalise on that. Additionally, he reported the Broncos club membership base had swelled by over 40% to 31,780 members at the end of the 2022-23 financial year. “This hard work has seen our debt facilities decrease and the club is in the most stable state it has possibly ever been in and something the team is very proud of,” he wrote. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 20 December, 2023 Authorised by Dominic Perrottet MP. Funded using parliamentary entitlements. Now that 2023 draws to a close, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a Merry Christmas to the Epping community, and join with you all in looking forward to a much brighter, and more prosperous new year together. Liberals pick Bennelong and North Sydney candidates for federal election Sydney businessman, now Ryde local, Scott Yung, is set to challenge sitting Labor MP Jerome Laxale, who won the formerly safe Liberal seat with a 7.9 per cent swing to Labor at the 2022 election. Mr Laxale won the seat following the retirement of popular MP and former tennis champion, John Alexander OAM, after his successor Simon Kennedy was preselected by the Liberals only several weeks out from the 2022 federal election. Bennelong is located in TWT Territory, with former Liberal prime minister John Howard OM AC holding the seat between 1974 and 2007. Liberal Party members confirmed Mr Yung’s successful endorsement at the Bennelong Federal Electorate Convention (FEC), with an overwhelming vote of 48 to 10. Mr Yung’s former experience as a candidate against Mr Minns in the 2019 state election, which led to a 5.1 per cent swing to the Liberal Party, is believed to have also made him an attractive option for preselection. The next federal election will need to be held before September 27, 2025. Previously, federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton had urged state officials to have all their candidates selected by June 2024, with potential candidates flagged by the end of this year. Gisele is Libs North Sydney pick Meanwhile, former Bennelong Liberal preselection candidate, Gisele Kapterian, has been chosen by the party to contest the federal seat of North Sydney. But the future of status of North Sydney - which is also in TWT Terrirtory - could be in for a shake up. The Australian Electoral Commission will give the first indication of changes to its borders when it delivers its proposed redistribution report by the middle of next year. There is a possibility North Sydney’s footprint may need to radically shift to accommodate the relatively under-quota status of most northern Sydney seats. Ms Kapterian, a moderate, defeated conservative rival Jess Collins by approximately 145 to 106 votes. Kapterian is an international trade lawyer by profession, having worked in Switzerland and more recently, lectured on the topic at Macquarie University. She has also worked as a senior adviser to federal ministers in the foreign affairs, industry and tourism portfolios during the Abbott and Turnbull governments, moving in 2018 to cloud giant Salesforce, where she works as Senior Director – Public Sector Strategy APAC. Ms Kapterian is also a board member of the Armenian National Committee of Australia, the peak public affairs organisation in the Armenian-Australian community. The Australian Electoral Commission will be considering boundary changes through next year with two scenarios: an early election fought on the existing boundaries or a later election in 2025 fought on new ones. Under the current boundaries, Kapterian will take on incumbent Kylea Tink but under new boundaries could find herself taking on Zali Steggall, the Warringah MP. A Liberal source told The Weekly Times that the preselection of both Mr Yung and Ms Kapterian had been ratified last month by the Liberal Party’s state executive. The Liberals have decided to preselect their candidates early this time after the debacle in 2022 where even incumbent MPs weren’t formally preselected until weeks out from the election. THE FORMER Liberal candidate who nearly defeated NSW Premier Chris Minns in his own seat of Kogarah in 2019, has won preselection as the next federal candidate for Bennelong. ☐ Liberal candidate for Bennelong, Scott Yung Carols Spectacular a massive success with bumper crowd “Families from all walks of life gathered, bundled up, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere,” chairperson of the event, Roseanna Gallo OAM, said. “The event’s success lay not only in the beautiful harmonies echoing through the air but also in the sense of unity and togetherness that permeated every note. “The program featured a delightful mix of traditional and contemporary carols, performed by talented local choirs and musicians, local dance schools.” It’s estimated that a crowd of 7,500 attended Sunday night’s event, with most staying through to the end of proceedings, which was marked by a spectacular pyrotechnics displace. The diverse range of musical styles catered to all ages, ensuring that grandparents and toddlers alike revelled in the festive tunes, Roseanna said. And of course, the ‘voice of Ryde’ Stephen Sim - as master of ceremonies - ensured the many performances from dancing to singing to Cox’s Road Mall competition draws, flowed seamlessly. Volunteers from the Rotary Clubs of Macquarie Park and North Ryde, who organised the event, went above and beyond to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees. Attendees were encouraged to contribute to local Rotary projects, including Christian Community Aid and the Domestic Violence Campaign, to help spread the joy of Christmas to those less fortunate. “In a world where our lives often move at a frenetic pace, events like these serve as a reminder to pause, appreciate our loved ones, and share in the magic of the season,” Roseanna said. Major sponsors of the event included Optus, North Ryde Community Bank, North Ryde RSL, Heritage Bank, Prego, McGrath Ryde’s Kim Toyer-Uttley, Northshore Mitsubishi and Kwik Kopy. THE TWT Rotary Christmas Carols Spectacular took centre stage at North Ryde Common on Sunday night, weaving together the spirit of Christmas, family togetherness, and the timeless joy of music. ☐ On stage, Santa Claus; TWT 2023 Granny Smith Festival Queen Jessica Ingham; and MC Stephen Sim. ☐ Avenue D performers on stage during a dance routine

8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 20 December, 2023 6 Hillview Rd Eastwood (Just across the road from Eastwood Library) | Phone 9874-0221 Now open for your convenience & entertainment till 1:30am from Fri-Sat THE MANAGEMENT & STAFF would like to wish you a very HAPPY AND JOYOUS CHRISTMAS Best wishes for the festive season and why not come in with friends and celebrate at CLUB EASTWOOD UNSUNG HEROES A spotlight on our behind-the-scened local heroes Dave White: Soldiering on at Club Eastwood for more than three decades IT’S ONLY in times of adversity that we learn who our real friends are, who loves us and who we love. And for a long-time, for Club Eastwood (‘The Bizzo’) worker Dave White, there’s been a strong bond with the place he’s entrusted to clean on a daily basis and it’s underpinned by mutual loyalty. In September, Dave clocked up 33 years as The Bizzo’s daily cleaner and still loves doing the job. “I was a jeweller by trade and I had a wrist reconstruction after an accident,” Dave told The Weekly Times. “I couldn’t go back to my trade, so I had to find something that I could do and to earn enough as a single parent raising two kids. “So, I found out cleaning paid quite well and I asked the club if I could I take over the cleaning contract and they agreed - and then they’ve looked after me ever since.” Dave only found out how appreciative the club was of his ongoing daily, reliable service, when the disastrous Covid restrictions and lockdowns devastated his cleaning business from early 2020. “I had bought an existing cleaning business that had as clients, six offices and the club,” he said. “It was only a few hours here (at The Bizzo) at the time and then because it got busy, it went to seven days a week. “When Covid hit, I lost all my office (clients) that I had for 30 something years.” Dave said staff from the offices he serviced, to this day, were still operating remotely and he had lost all income from those clients while they put him on ’pause’. Clubs and venues were also impacted by Covid restrictions imposed on patrons and businesses and The Bizzo was no exception, forced to weather the financial challenges of a brake on its income while patrons were prevented from visiting and the venue was restricted from opening. “The club could have quite easily said ‘that’s it until we come back’, but the Board got together and said ‘we’ve got to look after Dave’ and they had me just coming in here doing little jobs,” Dave said. “They were still paying my full invoice amounts to look after me. “They saved me, absolutely. Without their support, my business was gone. So they repaid me for my hard work and loyalty. I can’t thank them enough.” With Dave’s 15-year-old son, Blake, a prolific striker with NSW NPL team, Rydalmere Lions, word got around that Dave had lost most of his income from his office clients and he was offered some work cleaning the Lions’ headquarters, FC Social at Rydalmere. “So now I clean there also and have done for the last couple of years,” he said. By Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Club Eastwood’s dedicated, three-decade-plus cleaning contractor, Dave White. TWT On-theSpot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) “So they, as well, have looked after me.” Club Eastwood general manager Steve Colquhoun said the club was “so lucky to have a contractor dedicated to being part of the Bizzo family.” “I often get calls from cleaning companies wanting to put a proposal to clean the club and when I say we have had the same cleaner for more than 30 years, they all say ‘what?’ and know they don’t stand a chance,” Steve said. “Dave is more than just a contractor, he is an inspiration to staff and patrons on how - if you enjoy your job - you can always have a smile and a laugh.” DOES YOUR ORGANISATION HAVE AN UNSUNG HERO? State-of-the-art NSW Ambulance jets preparing for take-off NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said for the first time NSW Ambulance will have two new Pilatus PC-24 jet aircraft in its fleet, as part of a $54.3 million boost to increase the capability of Aeromedical Operations. “These two new jets are equipped with the latest technology and medical equipment to better serve our patients, flight nurses, doctors and pilots.” Mr Park said. “These jets can fly faster and further without the need for refuelling.” NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dr Dominic Morgan said flight nurse training has now commenced for the PC-24 jets. “Our dedicated team of flight nurses, doctors and pilots already provide high-level clinical care for all patients throughout NSW,” Dr Morgan said. “That level of care will be enhanced thanks to the increased range, speed and optimised internal medical fit-out of these aircraft.” The two new jets will complement the existing five Beechcraft King Air 350C planes in the NSW Ambulance fleet. They will be operated and maintained by Pel-Air, as part of a 10-year contract with NSW Ambulance. NSW Ambulance Fixed Wing Operations clinicians transport more than 6,000 patients every year. Both PC-24s aircraft will be ready to take to the skies to treat and transport patients by mid-2024. Two state-of-the-art jet aircraft will soon join the NSW Ambulance fleet. ☐ One of the new PC-24 jets Ryde libraries trial as heatwave refuges The trial was proposed by Eastwood based Liberal Clr Justin Li and will operate when temperatures are 36 degrees or above. Councillor Li said West Ryde and Eastwood libraries were chosen for the trial because of the lack of larger shopping centres where residents can have relief from the heat. “Many libraries overseas provide refuge to community members on days of extreme heat and with current cost of living problems, this is an initiative that could make a big difference during a very hot summer, especially for those who are most disadvantaged,” he said. Ryde’s decision comes as The City of Parramatta agreed to open the Ermington library when temperatures soar above 35 degrees. Councillor Li told the meeting his motion responded to a recent heatwave Saturday where temperatures hit 40 degrees. “Everyone knew in advance it would be over 40 degrees and we could have offered our libraries as a retreat,’’ he said. Eastwood and West Ryde libraries will become “heatwave refuges” until 9pm under a trial unanimously supported by councillors at last week’s City of Ryde Council meeting. ☐ Ryde Councillors Daniel Han, Justin Li and Jordan Lane believe an air conditioned library is one of the best places in Ryde to cool off in a heatwave.

Stavrinos) Why Christmas is more than Top Ryde’s puppets in a box By The Reverend Michael Armstrong* The Nativity is made up of puppets on strings with a mechanism that moves them, in a cycled pattern. It is quite quaint and lovely, and if you are willing to fight the crowds, worth a look. My own children, my good Christian children, think however that it is hysterical, and as we visited it made a commentary on it. There are two chickens that are meant to be pecking the ground, which they do, but then the string seems to go slack and they appear to faint. The Shepherd in the corner has a staff to guide his sheep, but his string has come loose and as a result he hits a sheep in the head. The Angel in the sky is on a string that makes her shake in such a way that it appears she is not well. The Magi seem to be doing something shifty and selling things on the side, rather than bringing gifts. Poor Joseph is meant to be bowing his head to look at the baby, but the string drops at the last second, making it look like is giving a huge sigh and giving up on life. My children, sensing that their Father was not impressed with their commentary, redeemed themselves on the way home in the car when, after they had stopped laughing, our conversation turned to reflecting on the real story of Christmas. The story of God coming among us. It is a story of a God who loves us so much that he chose to enter into our humanity, and At Top Ryde there is a large box in the outdoor food plaza area that contains a Nativity scene. ☐ Reverend Michael Armstrong. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO become one of us, in order to reveal we can be a part of his story – not some fairytale, puppets or pantomime - but our real and genuine stories, then and now! Into the world of the fainting chickens, cranky shepherds, deal making Magi, unwell angels, and exhausted Joseph’s, and into the lives of you and me, God enters through faith in Jesus, and brings us into his story where we are able to receive genuine love, hope, joy and peace that transforms each of us. We, in turn, continue the story - every time we forgive, ourselves and others; every time we love unconditionally; every time we offer mercy and compassion; every time we act with living kindness; every time we feed the hungry, protect the vulnerable and oppressed, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned; every time we speak truth to power, make peace, be reconcilers and restore justice. That is what we celebrate at Christmas – that God entered into our story in order to make us a part of his, and to change our story for ever so that we are given the power and authority to bring about his kingdom on earth as in heaven . . . a kingdom of love, hope, joy and peace. Wishing you a happy and holy Christmas, and a most peaceful New Year. Praying that you and yours might be a part of his story, and in doing so continue to change history. * The Reverend Michael Armstrong is the Rector of the Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill

ACRO! with 2024 enrolments NOW OPEN For more information visit www.KLDperformingarts.com.au Tigers snare six million dollar man Luai has confirmed he wants to leave the Panthers amid widespread media reports the Tigers have agreed to pay him upwards of $1.2 million per year. But under NRL rules, Penrith has 10 days from last Saturday to convince Luai to change his mind, while the halfback also has the option to withdraw from any deal with the Tigers. The 26-year-old mega star took to Instagram on Saturday afternoon to deny a deal had been done. “No pen to paper here,” he wrote but hinted that he would let Panther fans know when a deal was complete. Fuelling speculation that a deal will be done, Interim Tigers CEO Shane Richardson revealed the Tigers had withdrawn a multi-million offer to the Warriors’ Addin Fonua-Blake. “I’ve made my feelings on Luai well known for a long while and in my opinion, he is the best young half coming through,” Richardson said. “Not only that, he’s a great team leader, that Penrith side revolves around Luai. “He is a great person off the field and you couldn’t meet a better person than him and you couldn’t ask for a better person at your club.” The Bulldogs are still in the running for Luai but would have to match or exceed the Tigers $6 million price tag. It is expected new recruit Jayden Sullivan will shift to halfback in 2025 to accommodate Luai’s arrival. The Tigers have been desperate to sign the NSW representative halfback since Luke Brooks left the club to sign for Manly. The Tigers are reported to have signed the best half back in the NRL - Penrith’s Jarome Luai - on a five-year deal worth more than $6 million that commences in the 2025 season. ☐ The Tigers’ new interim CEO Shane Richardson fronted the media last Wednesday at the club’s Concord headquarters. We also had three large troupes compete - Under 10 Jazz, Under 14 Jazz and Under 16 Hip Hop. “Our Under 10s troupe was particularly successful, placing five out of six eisteddfods, including two first places. Many of our soloists also consistently placed.” Kate says it was particularly special to see the students do so well at the local Ryde Eisteddfod where four of them were placed first in their age group, including: Chloe Wang (9 years); Francesca Zangari (11 years); Samantha Gray (14 years); and Alexandra Dennett (open age). “Overall, it was a highly successful eisteddfod season for our school. I love seeing the students shine on stage. I am so proud of them and the passion and dedication they consistently bring to their performances,” Kate says. “I’m especially proud of how they take feedback on board from the adjudicators and use it to fuel and guide their next performance. It shows growth and maturity as a performer. It’s not easy putting yourself out there and being judged.” The Gala Dinner also celebrated and recognised the exceptional year students had and to also thank parents and the wider KLD community for their ongoing support. It was also an opportunity to announce and present Major Awards to students to recognise their efforts throughout the year. To be eligible for these awards, the recipient must have demonstrated a strong commitment to performing and the KLD community,” said Kate. “They must show an ability to balance creativity, initiative and technique through performance, as well as demonstrate their desire to pursue individual goals whilst upholding KLD values. We also consider examination results and teacher feedback when determining who will win our major awards. Local dance studio KLD Performing Arts celebrated its 15-year anniversary on the weekend at a Gala Dinner attended by almost 300 students and parents at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. ☐ Top, the extended KLD Performing Arts family; and, above, a student on the catwalk (images: Jennifer Ngo - @jenniferdpngo) Recipients of the 2023 awards announced at the Gala Dinner were: Major Scholarship: Mia Morganti Mini Scholarship: Azalea Summons & Lily Butler Excellence Award: Francesca Zangari Sportsmanship Award: Tamar Sat Star Performer: Alexis Yusofzai Teachers Choice Award: Ava Robertson While KLD does focus on producing technically strong students, it doesn’t take away from performing for fun and fitness, which many of their students choose to do. “We recently held our annual dance concert at The Concourse, Chatswood where almost 130 students participated in performances consisting of drama, singing, acro, jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, contemporary and lyrical dance,” Kate says. “It was a very enjoyable concert, and it was great to see students perform in front of their family and friends for fun.” Audience members at the Gala Dinner were also treated to a fashion show, drama performance and solo dances by the students. KLD won the Northern Districts Local Business Awards in the Performing Arts category in late 2022 and was a Finalist in 2023. KLD was also a finalist in 2023 Australian Women’s Small Business Champion Awards. KLD has two studios – one based in Denistone and the other at North Ryde RSL Youth Club.
