Dementia Australia Ambassador and former Gladesville MP John Watkins has paid tribute to Dementia Australia Patron Sir Michael Parkinson CBE who died this week, aged 88. Hunters Hill residents say there’s been no action, no excuses on Figtree Park works Group spokesman David Salter said Hunter’s Hill Council has had more than two months to inform residents why no work is being done on the site where machinery sits idle and no workers are seen. “It is now ten weeks since the cottage at 48 Gladesville Road was demolished and the park’s exclusion fence was erected,’’ Mr Salter said. “The park has been closed to residents for all that time even though no construction work has been done. “Meanwhile the exclusion fence remains, much to the frustration of the residents and workers at the Hunters Hill Village, who are prevented from using the area.” Mr Salter said a truck dumped rubble on the site on July 4 “presumably to provide heavy vehicle access from Matthew Street” and six days later residents received a letter from the park’s contractor (Dan Hoole of Landscape Solutions) advising that two work zones had been established and parking had been taken away from in front of the demolished cottage. “Since then, the only work done in the park has been to fence off the protected trees and a skip and some assorted piping have been left there for weeks,’’ Mr Salter said. In response to his group’s demand for an explanation from Hunter’s Hill Council, Mayor Zac Miles told The Weekly Times “early, preparatory works for proper drainage” are currently being carried out on the site. “We are now just waiting for the building materials to arrive and these include the lighting and the pavers,’’ the Mayor said. “So we are still on schedule to complete the works by late this year or early next year.” The Defenders of Figtree Park group has been fighting to stop the redevelopment of the park, which will go ahead after all but two Hunter’s Hill councillors - Clr Ross Williams and Clr Jim Sanderson - recently voted to give General Manager Mitchell Murphy the authority to pursue the redevelopment, which is being funded by a state government grant. When complete, the new look park will include a children’s playground, amenities and a picnic area. The local independent planning panel recently knocked back a Council proposal to remove around 40 trees, modifying plans for the new park. The Defenders of Figtree Park residents action group said Hunter’s Hill Council has failed to come up with excuses why it continues to seal off the park despite redevelopment work on the $4.7 million project being “abandoned” for several weeks. ☐ We see the fences, we see the equipment but we never see workers doing any work, say locals who live and work near Figtree Park. Beecroft bush dance Promoter Brian J Freeman said dances are walked through for new dancers and more experienced dancers will assist them to enjoy the event while exercising in a beneficial way. “Spot floor prizes and beverages are hot-billy provided but bring your own mug. Entry is $19 for singles, $14 for members and $39 for a family. Dance workshops are held on Mondays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the lower Intermediate Hall, beneath the Pennant Hills Library. For information on the workshops phone Wilma on 0413 673 339 The next Beecroft Bush Dance will be held from 2pm to 4.30pm on Saturday, September 2 in the Beecroft Community Hall. ☐ Take your partner for a bush dance. ☐ Sir Michael Parkinson is pictured with Ita Buttrose and former Gladesville MP and Dementia Australia Ambassador John Watkins. Ryde Council will lobby Lane Cove MP to help save North Ryde Common Last week’s edition of The Weekly Times revealed the state government is considering housing on the Common and the neighbouring mental health facility. Ryde MP Clr Jordan Lane gathered a petition of more than 2,000 signatures against housing on the North Ryde site and urged the government to immediately rule it out. The City of Ryde will lobby Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts to support the campaign to save North Ryde Common from high density residential housing. Last Tuesday’s extraordinary meeting of the Council voted to write to Mr Roberts to support the campaign to save the Common. The Lane Cove MP is the former Planning Minister and has been a prominent supporter of the creation of new, affordable housing. The Council also resolved to further to oppose any plans that reduce or diminish the public’s access to green space in Ryde. Councillors stressed that North Ryde Common is also the venue of the annual TWT/Rotary Christmas carols. Premier Chris Minns has not made a decision to build on the Common but has stated his government is committed to the creation of housing to ease the state’s housing crisis and this site is one of hundreds across Sydney being considered. In response, the Councillors resolved to conduct a workshop to identify Council-owned parking lots and similar parcels of land to use as affordable housing and to work with local Community Housing Providers to identify further potential affordable housing sites in the City of Ryde. The Council also expressed its willingness to find solutions to the housing crisis.
4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 23 August, 2023 Hunters Hill Guest Column Spring into our competition My main joy in life post retirement, apart from my family, was St. Mark’s Playgroup. First term 2020 had just begun when we realised it was no longer wise to continue our activities which had brought joy to over 350 families the prior fourteen years. Our children would miss the usual social lives and activities these special years held. All age social events were cancelled. Deliveries of ice cream helped my grandchildren at particularly stressful times. An unexpected storm saw the gutters torn off my building resulting in my move to a nearby BnB for six months. On return home my life needed some changes. I decided to throw myself into my unit block garden to fill many empty moments. Quick masked trips to Bunnings to collect sick plants requiring attention were undertaken. This provided me with activity and interaction for my mental health. At the end of COVID restrictions our lives started to return to normal. Speaking to Mayor Zac Miles I suggested, as Hunters Hill is Australia’s Oldest Garden Suburb, we should have a Spring Garden Competition. The Mayor called a meeting with Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Krassoi and some local garden lovers. I had recently joined Hunters Hill Rotary. I mentioned the proposed Garden Competition to President Charles Amos who said as Rotary had run the Garden Competitions over 20 years ago Rotary should be involved. Hunters Hill Rotary and our Council have now joined forces for what is shaping up to be an exciting program. I encourage all residents in the Municipality of Hunters Hill to come on board and support the competition. Many of us had our lives affected by COVID. There is NO ENTRY FEE. There are several categories calling for entries. If you don’t choose the appropriate one don’t worry as the judges will enter it in the right section. Entries close on 18 September. Further information and Entry Forms are available at Huntershill.nsw.gov.au/garden/ The historic Hillman Orchard adjoins Vienna and will benefit from all proceeds of the event with the planned restoration and maintenance. If any readers can assist we are trying to locate any photographs of the original orchard. On Sunday, October 8 immerse yourself in the beauty of Spring in the Municipality by viewing many beautiful gardens and being inspired by some of the incredible talent of our local gardeners. The winning gardens can be viewed along with the showcase gardens of Milthorpe, Ivy Alley and Clifton. Open Garden Tickets are $25 and can be booked at Eventbrite http://bit.ly/ hhopengardenday Check in on October 8 will be at The Hunters Hill Club between 9.30 to 11.30am when maps of the gardens to be visited will be provided. We look forward to you entering the Spring Garden Competition, adding to the ongoing beauty of our community and visiting our Open Garden Day. Pamela Alvarez is a Spring Garden Competition Member, Rotarian and long term resident. To The POINT By Pamela Alvarez HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Exploring our pride of place This event, jointly presented by Council and the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill, is on Sunday, October 8 from 10am to 4.30pm. Beginning at the Hunters Hill Club for check in, the Open Garden Day program will feature the well-known ‘Clifton House’, a property many may recognise as the backdrop in previous seasons of Channel Ten’s reality television series ‘The Bachelor’, as well as scenic laneway nursery, ‘Ivy Alley’ and winning gardens from the 2023 Hunters Hill Spring Garden Competition. Not only is the Open Garden Day a chance to see some incredible local spaces but it is also an opportunity to connect and learn from other local gardeners – and all for a good cause - to raise funds for the maintenance of the historic Hillman Orchard, located in Alexandra Street. I hope everyone gets the chance to join us on the day and explore these iconic gardens. Tickets are available through the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill via Eventbrite at bit.ly/ hhopengardenday. Cat chat Hunters Hill is home to some unique native wildlife, which can be vulnerable to popular pets, such as cats. With the aim to keep both these well-loved species out of harm’s way, our neighbours at Lane Cove Council are hosting a talk, led by RSPCA NSW, on ‘Keeping Cats Safe and Happy at Home’. The talk, held online via Zoom on Thursday 31 August from 7pm, will offer insights and It’s almost the time of the year when we can enjoy the natural beauty of Hunters Hill, and this year the hard work of dedicated gardeners participating in Hunters Hill’s Spring Open Garden Day will be on full display - tickets are now on sale for the open gardens. advice on cat safety and enrichment to help extend and enhance the lives of cats, while reducing their impact on wildlife by sharing tips to keep pet cats happy, safe and healthy at home. Bookings are required for this event and can be accessed through the Lane Cove Council website. Road rules With Road Rules Awareness Week (21- 27 August) underway, now is a perfect time to improve your knowledge of traffic laws, to ensure you are as safe as possible behind the wheel. The week-long program is an initiative of Transport for NSW, to remind everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility -and knowing the road rules is one of the best ways to help keep yourself and others safe. See the road rules page on the Transport for NSW website to refresh your knowledge; and please remember to take care and travel safely. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Matildas stole our hearts Dear Sir, The Matildas and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have stolen all of our hearts, and we have ridden the wave of emotion across a whole month of top-quality action, with the best players from the best teams playing outstanding football right here in our city. As the fireworks exploded and the ticker tape rained down on the eventual champions Spain as they collected their trophy, this signalled not the end, but the beginning of a love affair with women’s football that Australia needs to embrace. We all know the A-League Women is the top flight of female football in Australia, where the next Matildas are nurtured and we only have to wait eight weeks before a new season starts and we get to see some of our national team heroes in action. Under 16s can get a free season pass, allowing access to every home game for their favourite team. An amazing offer! But did you know that North Western Sydney boasts two teams in the top flight of National Premier League football, namely Spirit FC and Gladesville Ravens. Sharing their home, Christie Park - like the giants of Inter and AC Milan - the season is coming to its climax right now. Whilst the Ravens are consolidating their place in the top division and finish their season on September 3 at Christie Park with a 7.10pm kick off against Northern Tigers, Spirit FC are looking at finals football and will be in action in the semi-finals soon against the biggest teams in New South Wales. What a great way to keep the momentum going after the World Cup. Who knows, you might see the future Sam Kerr or Mary Fowler out there, and it could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the world game. TEXI SMITH Meadowbank Reflecting on the community’s challenges BY KYLEA TINK MP* I took the opportunity to speak about the frighteningly rapid growth of homelessness among women: those fleeing violence, and ageing women who live alone. I am sorry to report progress at the Federal level is minimal. The fortnight did see the commencement of 10 days paid domestic violence leave for all Australians: I welcome this change. I hope people experiencing violence will use it to move to a safer space but the legislation will not solve the crisis that every year sees nearly 8,000 women return to dangerous environments after fleeing. They have nowhere else to go, another 9,000 become homeless. Crisis response services are overburdened and emergency shelters are overflowing. With over 96 women having lost their lives to domestic violence in the 84 weeks since January 1, 2022, we must do more. A disturbing number of older women are also experiencing poverty and homelessness, with half of the older women living in private rentals in Greater Sydney living in poverty, two out of five homeless individuals are women who have found themselves in this situation due to life events such as losing a job, the death or a partner or another unforeseen event. I am inviting people to join my THE MOST recent parliamentary sitting week left me reflecting on the challenge of homelessness, housing affordability, violence in our community and our ageing population: and what we can do to address them. Aging Well in North Sydney Advisory Board so if this is an area you are passionate about, I’d love to hear from you via [email protected]. I’ve consistently argued in Parliament that we must hold ourselves accountable for genuine progress to end homelessness and violence across our community. If we work together this can be achieved but it will take bold ambition, a firm commitment to pursue change and, in some circumstances, creative thinking. * Kylea Tink MP is the Independent federal Member for North Sydney Contractor appointed for the Lane Cove Sport and Recreation Centre A Contractor was this week appointed by Lane Cove Council to build Lane Cove’s new Sport and Recreation Centre on River Road. ADCO Constructions will be the head construction contract for the $75m project after successfully building Lane Cove Council’s multi-award winning The Canopy development several years ago. Designed by AJ+C Architects, the new eight court multi-sport community facility, bistro and 250 space car park is being built on the car park and former clubhouse at the Lane Cove Golf Course, which will remain open throughout the construction program. Lane Cove General Manager Craig Wrightson said the new Centre will open in 2025. “The new facility will be where everyone can play and socialise whether it be netball, basketball, tennis, dancing, or social events,” he said. “By the end of 2025, the community will be able to enjoy the four indoor and four outdoor courts, indoor and outdoor dining, multi-purpose community rooms, and pro shop, all with views over the tree-lined golf course and valley”. Mr Wrightson assured golfers they can continue to use the course throughout the construction program. “The course entry and pro shop have been moved to a new temporary site on Gamma Road to enable earth works to begin,” he said. Lane Cove Council is currently undertaking a major works program. “This is another capital project delivered by the Council, following the soon to be opened $45m Wadanggari Park over the railway at St Leonards, the muchloved $80m The Canopy development, and the $15m 8 lane 50m pool, 900 seat grandstand and youth centre at the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre complex,” Mr Wrightson said. ☐ An artist impression of Lane Cove’s new Sports and Recreation Centre.

A record-breaking crowd of more than 75,000 spectators attended the final, marking the fifth time the iconic stadium reached maximum capacity during the tournament. After an incredible, record-breaking month of football in two countries, 10 Stadiums and nine host cities, a new FIFA Women’s World Cup winner was crowned at Stadium Australia in a spectacular tournament finale. FIFA President, Gianni Infantino hailed the FIFA Wom- en’s World Cup transformational after USD $570 million in revenue was generated, allowing the tournament to break even for the first time. This iteration marked the first time 32 countries took part in the tournament, which previously featured 24 teams. Six different regional confederations were rep- resented. “Australia’s passion for football has never been clearThe 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup concluded on unday evening with a thrilling final showdown between Spain and England at Stadium Australia, with Spain crowned World Champions. ☐ Left, an English fan in full ‘Lioness’ costume didn’t get the result she wanted and, right, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final between England and Spain was a truly global spectacle. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTOS (A. Stavrinos) ☐ The Matildas won the nation’s hearts er. The record attendances, viewership numbers, and the extraordinary atmosphere throughout this tournament showcase how deeply our nation loves this game,” James Johnson, Football Australia CEO, said. “We understood the transformational power of the tournament and have worked tirelessly since we were granted hosting rights to use this moment to springboard Australian football into a new future, with women’s football leading the way for the game. “By every measure, the tournament has been a resounding success and the biggest and best ever edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. “The Australian sporting landscape will never be the same because the CommBank Matildas have changed things forever.” Australia’s own Matildas have done the nation proud. Their journey through the tournament captivated the na- tion with matches rating an average of 3.44 million per match. The aggregate viewership for their seven fixtures stands at a staggering 24.08m. Australia is only the second team to host a FIFA Wom- en’s World Cup and finish in the top four after the USA (winners in 1999, third place in 2003). An astonishing 164 goals were scored, surpassing all previous records. The tournament saw a spike in fan engagement, with almost 2 million fans attending matches, 500,000 over initial targets and projections, with 747,000 visitors at FIFA Fan Festivals. Stadiums have been full, with stadium occupancy of more than 84% across Australia and New Zealand. Australia’s matches in its seven matches during the tournament attracted 403,136 fans with an average of 57,591 for each match reaching 99.92% of capacity at each venue. In broadcast, Australia’s semi-final match against England broke records with 7.13 million viewers and a national reach of 11.15 million on Seven’s platforms, marking the most-watched television programme since 2001. Seven’s coverage of the tournament reached 18.6 million broadcast viewers with an additional 3.82 million on its streaming platform, 7plus. Sunday’s final between Spain and England reached 5.54 million and averaged 3.08 million.
Wednesday 23 August, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 BUSINESS’ NIGHT OF NIGHTS! Northern Districts businesses on show H OLLYWOOD has the Oscars and the music industry has the Grammys – but for Northern Districts businesses, the annual night of nights is Wednesday 23rd August. That’s the date of the 2023 Northern Districts Local Business Awards. Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe said: “There’s no doubt that local business owners and their staff work hard to provide the best possible service to their customers. “That’s why the annual Northern Districts Local Business Awards presentation night is always such a popular event. “It’s a glittering event that gives - nalists a chance to dress up and take a break so they can enjoy an evening of entertainment, good food, relaxed chat and celebration with their colleagues and people from other businesses from around the district.” Mr Loe said being a nalist at the Northern Districts Local Business Awards presentation night was an enormous achievement. “It’s also a chance for businesspeople and their teams to re ect on their successes with a fun night out,” he said. “Making it to the nalist presentation is a great re ection on their efforts and everyone is always extremely proud to be there. “All nalists in each category are announced, with their picture shown on the big screen. “It’s heart-warming to hear the deafening cheers from the crowd as everyone celebrates the achievement of all the businesses in the room.” Today is the day when nominees for the 2023 Northern Districts Local Business Awards discover if they have made it as a nalist. Mr Loe said the high quality of all nominees had made the job of judges incredibly diffi cult. “The Weekly Times, which has supported the awards as media partner for many years, will announce the - nalists in each category with a special feature in today’s paper,” he said. “This is a chance for customers and clients to see if the businesses they nominated have become nalists.” The Northern Districts Local Business Awards are only possible with the support of major partners, City of Ryde and NOVA Employment and support partners, The Epping Club, Macquarie Park Ryde Business Chamber, White Key Marketing and Cornerstone. “It’s with great pleasure that I congratulate all the nalists on their achievements, on behalf of the Northern Districts Local Business Awards,” Mr Loe said. “I would also like to thank the Northern Districts community for the huge support that they continue to show for their local businesses through the Awards every year. “Without them, these outstanding businesses would receive the recognition which they deserve.” For more information about the Local Business Awards, visit www.thebusinessawards.com.au. Things got off to the best start for APIA at Christie Park as goal ace Jason Romero opened the scoring in ten minutes before Matt Cahill equalised APIA Leichhardt’s shock 2-1 defeat by local rivals North West Sydney Spirit on Saturday gives the Italian community club an opportunity to win the NPL NSW Men’s title in front of its home fans, coach Franco Parasi said. ☐ NWS Spirit players celebrate after defeated NPL NSW Men’s league leader APIA Leichhardt 2-1 in their last home games of the season at Christie Park. (Image: Football NSW live stream) just before the break. With scores locked, former APIA player Peter Kekeris scored the winning goal in the 85th minute to complete yet another thrilling comeback at home for David Perkovic’s team. The winning coach said he is thrilled to bring down the local rival. “To go 1-0 down and win 2-1 against the league leaders is a great testament to the whole squad and not just the players who were out there tonight,’’ he said. “APIA are a good squad and there’s a reason they’re on top of the ladder, but we were quite aggressive on and off the ball.” Perkovic said he is proud of his marksman, Matthew Cahill. “I was really happy with his response and his positioning for the goal was perfect to finish off a good Kota Odakura cross,” he said. North West Sydney Spirit travel to Western Sydney Wanderers this Sunday at 3pm.
20 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 23 August, 2023 At every Tigers match: • Action on the big screen • Promotional giveaways • Bar & food trucks • Happy hour during every Tigers match! Roosters vs Wests Tigers SATURDAY August 26th from 5.30pm Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers FRIDAY September 1st from 6.00pm NRL Round 26 NRL Round 27 728 Victoria Road, Ryde 2112 All enquiries: 9807 3344 Meat Raffles Every WEDNESDAY @ 7pm Every FRIDAY @ 7pm Every SUNDAY @ 12:30pm ☐ Benji Marshall Year credentials were on full display throughout the game and he looks likely to be a key player in the future plans of new head coach Benji. After the match Api told me he thought his winning goal fell short. “I’m just so glad it went over, I thought it was a bit short there but I’m grateful,’’ he said. The match was Luke Brooks final home game for The Tigers. This Saturday the Tigers take on the Bondi Chicks at the Chook Pen from 5.30pm. SEE YA THERE! BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Benji was appointed Head Coach this week and will take over the top job in rugby league with the blessing of super coach Tim Sheens, more than a year ahead of a scheduled hand over. Thirty eight year old Benji played 346 NRL games - was part of Tim’s 2005 grand final winning side - and is widely regarded as one of the top five legends to have put on a Tiger jersey. The only player of Maori descent to be a head coach, he said he is humbled by Tim’s faith in him and is grateful for all Tim has taught him as a player and as an assistant coach. “To be the Head Coach of theTigers has been a long-held dream of mine,” he told me. Benji has had a winding road to the top job. He left the Tigers to play rugby union in 2014 but then signed for the Sinners in the same year. After a short stint in Bananaland in 2017 he returned to the Tigers, only to be axed in 2020 (without notice) to join the Bunnies. But his heart was always with the Tigers and after his retirement from playing he took on a media role for our club prior to his appointment as assistant coach under Tim last year. A miracle penalty goal from the sideline in the final minutes of Saturday’s thriller against Bennies Boys secured a 24 to 23 win for the Tigers. Captain Api Koroisau kicked the winning penalty in a game where Jahream Bula’s Rookie Of The Tiger legend Benji Marshall will lead the club to grand final glory next year.
