☐ Member for Bennelong, John to drive innovation

Alexander OAM with Treasurer Federal Treasurer, Josh Fryden-
Josh Frydenberg and Cochlear berg, paid a visit to Macquarie Park
CEO Dig Howitt on Monday as part of a travelling
roadshow to sell last week’s Fed-
AGED 50 eral Budget.

Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra. ”Bennelong is the Innovation Capital of Aus-
tralia,” Mr Alexander said.

”We are the home of many Australian organisa-
tions that are at the cutting edge of technologi-
cal advancement.

”Bennelong is the home of wi-fi, the bionic ear
and many other ground-breaking inventions.

“Cochlear are the world leaders in the techno-
logical development of medical devices for the
hearing impaired. This new Patent Box policy
will encourage them to do even more research
and development, which will be excellent for lo-
cal jobs, and for Australia’s future economy.”

Mr Frydenberg said he was excited to be in
Bennelong, ”an innovation hub, to showcase
the opportunities our Patent Box initiative will
create.”

“Last year’s Budget included a substantial in-
vestment in R&D tax incentives,” he said.

”Under the Patent Box, income earned from
new patents in the medical and biotech sector
developed and registered in Australia, will be
able to access a concessional tax rate of 17%,
compared to the standard company tax rate for
larger companies of 30%.

”The Patent Box will apply to the medical and
biotech sectors, with consultation on expanding
it to the clean energy sector to help secure Aus-
tralia’s recovery.” Mr Frydenberg said.

The new policy will commence on 1 July next
year.

Meanwhile, at a breakfast event earlier in the
day, Mr Frydenberg dismissed suggestions the
government delivered a Labor-style budget.

In a speech to guests at the event, hosted
by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and
Industry and Business NSW, Mr Frydenberg
said “people say to me, Josh this isn’t a Liberal
budget, to be spending so much money on es-
sential services”.

Mr Frydenberg said the budget, which includ-
ed income tax cuts, incentives for business, and
measures to encourage home ownership, was
consistent with the principles outlined by Liberal
Party founder Robert Menzies.

“But [Menzies] also said we were a progressive
party that would provide a safety net for those
who need it most,” the Treasurer said.

Mr Frydenberg said he was proud of the gov-
ernment’s expenditure on the National Disabil-
ity Insurance Scheme and the Pharmaceutical
Benefits Scheme, and that the record expendi-
ture on aged care was “not just more money, it’s
also serious reform”.

Local jobs bonanza
coming: says Alexander

Meanwhile, Mr Alexander has told The Week-
ly Times that jobs are expected to be cre-
ated across the Bennelong Electorate with
schools and hospitals also expected to cash
in on last week’s Federal Budget.

“Australia entered the crisis from a position of
economic strength having brought the Budget
back to balance for the first time in 11 years,”
he said.

“This provides us with the fiscal firepower
to support our Bennelong community when
we needed it most including record funding
for schools, hospitals, aged care and mental
health.”
