of 100 years if it weren’t for John who has worked tirelessly
seven days a week often till after midnight pursuing his pas-
sion to inform, to bring the news and his opinions to the peo-
ple of this region.
John is a great man and greatness generates any number
of responses from respect to admiration to feelings of inad-
equacy which sometimes leads to jealousy. We in Australia
don’t always do tall poppies well.
This legend of Bennelong and beyond has been built on
fearlessly having a go, taking risks and when failure has vis-
ited, licking the wounds and having another go.
As Winston Churchill declared “it’s not how many times you
get knocked down it’s how many times you get up”. In my
game success is judged on wins not your losses.
John is still standing, standing tall and despite all of his
achievement and success he still strives every day to make a
difference, to make things right, make things better.
Thirty years ago when I was trying to get support to rede-
velop the Ryde Aquatic centre John was visiting his twin
brother in London during Wimbledon and I took the oppor-
tunity to introduce him to David Lloyd my co founder of Next
Generation Clubs. John listened intently, was encouraging of
our endeavour and remained supportive through our trials
and tribulations in our fight to get it up.
When I introduced a local version of Knighthoods, Mate Of
Bennelong, it was no contest that John was chosen for this
Honour bestowed by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
The official greeting G’day Mate is so fitting.
John is a great person to call mate.
His mate.
