One of five family passes Father Martin’s Musings Encourage one another In the mid 1970’s things like lap top computers, eye-phones and electric cars were often things we could only imagine. I came away from the gathering with a deep sense of admiration and respect towards so many of my fellow old boys. Consistently I heard where so many of the men were pro-active in helping others who were victims of accidents or family tragedies such as coming to terms with children dying from cot deaths. Then there was the support for men experiencing the reality of professional misadventures and marriages collapsing. It was also gratifying to hear how so many of the former classmates had made a great success of their professional lives, their marriages and were now proud grandparents! So often in life the blessings and the tragedies that come our way in life can’t ever be readily processed so the genuine concern and advice of other people is invaluable. The quality of the relationships that we shape and then cultivate in life so often determine our identity and healthy self-esteem. What also gratified me was the level of good humour of so many people that was a strong feature in our school days and is still strongly alive. The words of Saint Paul shone through so well for me; “encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney Recently I attended a 50-year school reunion with just over 70 men who I finished school with in 1974. Nancy’s life threatening illness This week’s Cat Of The Week survived a life threatening illness and is seeking a compassionate owner. Nancy Pussycat is available for adoption from Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals where the team recall her amazing survival story. “Nancy came to the World League over a decade ago as a kitten with severe flu,’’ the team said. “It was touch and go whether she would survive, but she did, however, she sustained damage to her left eye and her lungs.” The team said the illness has left her a bit wheezy. “She is a tame, if not an excessively affectionate cat who will delight you with sudden burst of energy, showing off her soccer skills,’’ the team said. “She has a snuggle buddy of similar age to her, named Missy and it would be truly amazing if these two could find a home where they could live out the rest of their lives, quietly enjoying each other’s company in a loving home.’’ To adopt these cats phone the team on 9817 4892 or email [email protected]. “If you are unable to adopt them at the moment, would you consider making a tax-deductible donation to help care for long-term cats like Nancy and Missy at your local, no kill adoption centre run by WLPA?” the team asks. “Any donation of money or food in this very challenging year, would be much appreciated that includes cheques, cash or direct deposit into our Commonwealth Bank account. Highlights of the Figtree Park revitalisation project include a state-of-the-art inclusive playground, garden beds, a new spacious plaza accessible via Gladesville Road, upgraded pathways, as well as vastly improved lighting, drainage, seating, and overall amenity. It gives me great pleasure to reopen this beautiful space in the heart of Hunters Hill. The improvements have made the park more user-friendly and in line with the needs of our community, while also contributing to better connectivity throughout the village. Welcoming New Citizens As Mayor, it is a privilege to preside over Citizenship Ceremonies and to receive pledges from members of our community in their final step to becoming an Australian Citizen. This evening’s Citizenship Ceremony falls within Refugee Week, a time to acknowledge the significant contributions refugees make to Australia and our thriving multicultural community. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Something special in Boronia Park In fact, it is all happening at beautiful Boronia Park! Not only are we just days away from opening a state of the art Sporting and Community facility, but Hunters Hill Rugby is absolutely thriving as the heart beat of our local community. Our Junior club continues to grow from strength to strength. This year the club is fielding teams from Try Rugby (ages 4 to 6) right up to Opens (which is under 18). Thanks to the amazing work of our Junior President Bec Watson we are fielding the first Opens side in over 15 years! And our Senior club is also breaking its own records! The club has over 200 hundred registered players (which we are pretty sure is a club record), and we are consistently fielding 8 Senior sides each week. That is made up of 5 Senior Men’s sides, 1 Womens 10’s side, and 2 colts (under 21) sides. The extraordinary thing about this is that HHRUFC is essentially fielding more teams than almost every other rugby club in NSW!! Boronia Park is the absolute epicentre of rugby in Sydney, and the Hunters Hill Rugby Club is not only famous but vibrant! Jewel In The Crown Which brings me to the jewel in the crown of community sport in Sydney. The Boronia Park Sports and Community Facility will be open in a matter of weeks. This is the culmination of decades of hard work from local volunteers, local government, and our elected representatives. We now have the sort of facilities that community sport deserves. There is something special happening in Hunters Hill at the moment. Simple things like dedicated women’s change rooms, accessible facilities for those with mobility challenges, and canteen and toilet infrastructure that is modern and practical. In short – we have contemporary facilities to serve everyone in the community – no matter what your sport, ability or age! Two individuals deserving of special recognition are Glen Sandford (HHRUFC Board Chairman) and Pete McFarlane (HHRFUC Board VP). Without their sheer determination and countless days, weeks and months of hard labour – future generations of community sportspeople would not have the facilities we are now eagerly awaiting. Thank you Glen & Pete! So we are now just a few tantalising weeks away from the ribbon being cut! It will be the moment that Boronia Park is truly crowned as the best (and most beautiful) community sporting precinct in Sydney! We look forward to welcoming everyone (especially new fans) to Boronia for the remainder of the Rugby season; to experience everything that is great about rugby and community sport. And put simply that is local people playing sport at their local park! How good is that!! Luke McCormack is President of the Hunters Hill Rugby Club Council needs to be proactive Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the article ‘NSW Government Announces Housing Targets’ (TWT 5/6/24). The article reported that the NSW Government will provide $200 million in incentives and grants for councils meeting housing supply goals. These funds can be used for green spaces and footpaths. The graph accompanying the article showed Ryde LGA has met more than 60% of its target, ranking it highly. Ryde Council should seize this opportunity to lobby the NSW Government to purchase TG Millner and fund footpaths, ensuring every street in Ryde LGA has adequate footpaths. More open space is essential for our health, especially as housing density increases. Footpaths are crucial for exercise and accessibility for those with disabilities. This announcement is timely, as Ryde Council currently cannot afford to purchase TG Millner or provide new footpaths. The Council needs to be proactive, emphasising to the government that meeting its targets deserves these grants and incentives. All levels of government should lobby on our behalf. Parties that do not fully support this should be held accountable in upcoming elections. DR PETER KIM Eastwood Reigning in the NDIS gravy train Dear Editor, NDIS rorts are continuing despite all the negative publicity it is getting from the Government Authority that is monitoring it. Up to $2 billion is still being rorted per year by mostly unregistered NDIS providers. If there are more than 90% unregistered providers, maybe that is a good place to start looking at to reign in the NDIS gravy train. Can we really afford to not do this to reduce the current $42 billion growing expense? CHRIS PIKE Ryde Governments must work together to save TG Millner Dear Editor, Pleasing to see that funding was found to save Leichardt oval, great news! PM Anthony Albanese was all too happy to throw some millions to keep this ground alive into the future. At half time in the Bunnies vs Broncos game on Friday night, The PM was interviewed on securing funding for Leichhardt Oval and said: “We don’t have enough grounds in Sydney, so we can’t afford to lose any of them.” How about our local Member for Bennelong brings the PM down to TG Millner with his cheque book to match Ryde Council’s commitments? It would be good to drag along the NSW Premier and Sports Minister. They can bring some cash too. Federal, State and Local governments need to work together to Save TG Millner! TOBIAS LORD Marsfield By Kylea Tink MP* Dear Editor, Regarding your article on the Medicare urgent care clinic in Ryde (TWT 12/6/2024) - what a load of government spin doctor press release bumf, that does not tell the reader anything useful. Why not tell us some useful things, like where this clinic is, what are opening hours, what facilities they have and a list of problems that can be addressed and what problems should be sorted at a hospital emergency department. NAME WITHHELD Eastwood Govt spin doctor press release bumf This has never been about me After two years and hundreds of thousands of conversations with members of our community, I am obviously disappointed by the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) proposal to abolish the seat of North Sydney at the end of this parliamentary term. But this has never been about me. My focus remains on our community, my team and the thousands of volunteers who helped turn North Sydney independent again. And I remain absolutely committed to continuing to fight for our community and the issues that matter most to us: issues like climate action; costs of living; and a smart, future-focused economy. If you live in North Sydney, please know that my team and I will continue to deliver the same level of representation that you’ve had over the past two years, for the rest of this parliamentary term. That includes pushing hard against Peter Dutton’s anti-science, anti-jobs and anti-climate promise to scrap Australia’s 2030 emissions reduction target if his LNP wins the next election. It’s baffling that the party that has always prided itself on being “better for business” is pursuing this policy position that would not only stall all of the economic gains we have begun to make in the renewable energy transition, but also condemn Australians to ongoing cost-of-living challenges. I’ll also continue to advocate for fairer air traffic management over Sydney. Hunters Hill, Boronia Park, and the surrounding areas are still experiencing a disproportionate The 2022 Federal Election was a turning point in Australian politics, and my community North Sydney was one of the first to stand up that year for independent representation. amount of aircraft noise, impacting residents’ sleep, wellbeing and ability to work from home. Airservices Australia has now accepted my request for a formal investigation into its management of aircraft noise, and I look forward to updating you on the outcome of this review in due course. Finally, it is worth noting that the newly released electoral boundary redistribution is a draft proposal. There is now a further process to go through, with the AEC accepting feedback from the public until 12 July via https:// www.aec.gov.au/redistributions/2023/nsw/ I remain committed to our community and the independent political movement and will continue to support it wherever and whenever I can. His visit came just two days before the release of the Australian Electoral Commission’s draft boundary changes being considered by an augmented Electoral Commission for New South Wales. Under the proposed changes, the Federal Electorate of North Sydney is likely to be abolished with Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and parts of Chatswood merged into the Bennelong Electorate. Member for North Sydney, Independent Kylea Tink, issued a statement on Friday conceding she was “obviously disappointed” with the proposed abolition, while stressing that a final decision had not been made. “This is a draft proposal and there is now a further process to go through, I will have more to say on this in due course,” her statement said. Ms Tink goes into more detail about the draft redistribution in her column on page 4 of this week’s edition of The Weekly Times. Meanwhile, the preselected Liberal candidate for North Sydney Gisele Kapterian said in a statement on Monday she acknowledged with sadness the AEC’s proposed abolition of the electorate of North Sydney. “The AEC proposes a three-way split, with our communities absorbed into Bradfield, Bennelong and Warringah,” she said. “These changes are due to be finalised on 10th of October. “In the interim, I will continue to advocate for the people of this great electorate. “There is still much to do. Contrary to media reporting, I’m not contemplating running for Bennelong and I have informed Scott Yung accordingly.” Mr Yung suggested it was ‘business as usual’ following news of the AEC proposal. “The draft boundaries take in suburbs where my education business, located in Chatswood, has helped hundreds of children and their families over the past four and half years,” Mr Yung told The Weekly Times. “As the endorsed Liberal Candidate for Bennelong, my focus continues what it has been in the past seven months - to advocate for what is important to assist the people of Bennelong, especially the cost of living crisis which is crippling families and small business owners.” The office for the Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, did not respond to The Weekly Times’ request for comment, but Labor sources said that although the draft redistribution wasn’t great news, the seat remain winnable for Mr Laxale with the notional advantage to the Liberals wafer thin. Mr Laxale won Bennelong in 2022 with a one per cent margin but the electorate will have a notional Liberal margin of only 0.1 per cent under the new boundaries, based on the last election results. The new boundaries resemble those Bennelong had from 1969 to 1990, including the first 16 years of former Prime Minister John Howard’s stint as the sitting member. ☐ Pictured, l to r, NSW Senator Maria Kovacic, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Liberal Member for Bennelong, Scott Young, during Mr Dutton’s Eastwood visit last Wednesday. ☐ The AEC’s draft redistribution map for Bennelong (image: AEC) Opposition Leader Peter Dutton visited Bennelong last Wednesday, hosting a function at Eastwood’s Noble House at which he locked in his support for the Liberal Party’s candidate for Bennelong, Scott Yung. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton locks in Bennelong Liberal candidate ahead of Australian Electoral Commission’s draft NSW boundary changes The shift of Bennelong to the west to take in more of Ryde Council and Epping eroded Mr Howard’s margin and ultimately cost him his seat in his government’s 2007 defeat. The redistribution, which would affect the boundaries of 39 of the 46 remaining seats in NSW and shift almost 13 per cent of voters in the state to a different electorate, would present challenges for MPs in marginal seats on both sides of politics. Kos Samaras from the polling group RedBridge, said Labor could gain ground in Bennelong because more young people would have enrolled to vote since the last election. “These new enrolments would be worth at least two per cent for Labor,” he said. The other big change is to the seat of Bradfield, held by Liberal Paul Fletcher, which is now in striking distance for a teal independent. Nicolette Boele, who ran as an independent in Bradfield in 2022, plans to do so again. Mr Samaras believes the Teals could now win Bradfield. “A teal seat gets abolished, but then Bradfield becomes a much easier seat for the teals to win,’’ he said. During his Eastwood visit, Mr Dutton described Mr Yung as an “incredible young Australian.” “He is accomplished, obviously highly-educated, speaks three languages. He has the ability to work hard, to connect with the local community,” Mr Dutton said. “When you speak to many people of Chinese heritage that we did this morning, those people are small business people, they’re hard workers. “They want more for their kids, they want to exercise that entrepreneurial flair, and they’re wonderful Australians. Scott represents them.” He said he was proud to have Mr Yung as part of his Liberal team. “He’ll be a great member for Bennelong, and I think it sends a very clear message to lots of young kids out in the community that you can aspire to be Scott Yung in Parliament,” he said. “You can be, not only a great Member, you can, I think, go on to be a Minister and higher.”
Wednesday 19 June, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: [email protected] Your City News MISTAKES CORRECTED In this instalment of my narrative looking at the history of the civic centre project at 1 Devlin Street, I will be detailing how Council acted quickly and decisively following the discovery of the improper internal funds transfer of $95 million in 2022. In collaboration with the Office of Local Government (OLG), Council developed and then successfully progressed an Action Plan to rectify the previous mismanagement of funds contained in Council’s Restricted Reserves. Although $52.5 million had been spent on infrastructure and other worthy community projects, the Action Plan resulted in $42.5 million of unspent funds, including $35.5 million for Ryde Central, being returned to their correct accounts and for their intended purpose. A new Cash Reserves Policy for the future utilisation of Council’s Restricted Reserves Funds was adopted and an external review of City of Ryde’s Voluntary Planning Agreements (VPA) was conducted to investigate the financial implications and liabilities on Council. By March 2024, The Audit Office NSW (AO) had cleared City of Ryde’s Financial Statements for the 2022/23 financial year, providing City of Ryde with an Unqualified Report – with no issues raised at the completion of its audit. I am proud to say that Council disclosed all matters in an open, ethical, transparent manner and to the highest financial standards possible. However, the improper transfer of funds for the Ryde Central Project has resulted in significant financial implications for Council’s ongoing operations and viability to perform at our current levels of services, programs, and other projects across the community. In voting to maintain public ownership of the Ryde Central site at the November 2023 Ordinary Meeting, Council deferred the construction of any new civic building at the site until sufficient funding can be identified. Staff are still working with the OLG, along with the ICAC, on the financial matters relating to this project. Next week: the financial impact of Council’s Voluntary Planning Agreements. ARMENIAN FLAG RAISING I was honoured to attend Kissing Point Park last week for the first of what will become annual ceremonies recognising Armenian Republic Day. This is a fantastic initiative that was brought to Council by Clr Sarkis Yedelian, my predecessor as Mayor of this great City, and is a wonderful way of recognising and supporting our significant population of Armenian descent. The City of Ryde was the first local council to recognise the Armenian Genocide and we’ve continued our advocacy over many years. The teenage star had what could be described as a breakout meet at the Australian Olympic trials in Brisbane. The former Holy Spirit Catholic Primary North Ryde student clocked PBs in all three of her events – the 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle. Her performance in the 100m free event got her to the final and a seventh-place finish, enough to make the team for Paris as a relay swimmer. At the 2023 World Junior Championships in Israel, Olivia won six medals, including individual golds in the 50m and 100m freestyle – and tied the championship record in the 50m freestyle, with a time of 24.59. Fellow Ryde Carlile Swimming alumnus and Ryde Sports Foundation former monthly Sports Star award winner, Se-Bom Lee, also qualified for the Olympic swim team. Cameron McEvoy and Bronte Campbell will become just the fourth and fifth Australians to swim at four Olympics, with McEvoy the first man to do so. The team also features three athletes representing Australia at their third Olympics, 13 returning for their second Games and 23 making their Olympic debut. The depth and talent of Australian swimming is on full display, with 16 of the athletes selected tonight already Olympic medallists. Fifteen claimed World Championship gold in 2023. The selection followed the conclusion of an incredible week of racing by athletes at the Australian Swimming Trials, which included Ariarne Titmus’ world record 200m freestyle swim. The 41 pool athletes join another three athletes already selected to Marathon Swimming for an overall swimming team size of 44 – with Moesha Johnson, already selected to compete in the 10km marathon swimming, also qualifying tonight in the women’s 1500m. Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission for Paris 2024 Anna Meares said tonight’s announcement was a time to celebrate for athletes after a week of fierce competition. “We have witnessed an extraordinary week of the toughest competition. The way these athletes have driven each other has made such an impact,” she said. Head Coach Rohan Taylor congratulated the team on their selection and said the Australian Swimming Trials at Brisbane Aquatic Centre had been outstanding, with so many quality swimmers competing fiercely for limited spots. “This team is balanced by debutants through to record breakers and stalwarts – from Cam McEvoy and Bronte Campbell at their fourth Games, through to rookies Ben Armbruster and Olivia Wunch,” he said. “This is a team that will do Australia proud – in and out of the pool – and we can’t wait to see competition unfold in Saint-Denis at the Centre Aquatique Olympique and in the Seine.” For more details on Australia’s Swimming Team for the Paris Olympics, visit: https://www.olympics.com.au/games/paris-2024/team/swimming-team/ By Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Australia’s Paris 2024 Olympic Swimming Team Three levels of government join in $40m Leichhardt Oval rescue …… but Barry didn’t get the memo! A joint $40 million investment in Sydney’s historic Leichhardt Oval will deliver critical upgrades to ensure the safety and comfort of competitors and fans. Last Friday’s announcement represented a collaboration between federal, state and local government. But Wests Tigers interim chair, who turned up late to the event, didn’t appear to get the memo. Tacked on the end of the speakers schedule, he took a swipe at the state government over what he thought was its lack of contribution to the funding, but embarrassingly, had to be corrected by Prime Minister Albanese. “We made clear in March that we will be putting in place a stadium plan for the future years by the end of this month,” O’Farrell told media. “This decision makes it much easier to put that plan together and to guarantee the future of games here at Leichhardt Oval.” “And I’m an optimist and I’m optimistic about the state government also eventually putting some money as well.” Before he left centre stage, Prime Minister Albanese could be heard telling Mr O’Farrell that “they are putting some money in” as NSW Sport Minister Steve Kamper’s facial expressions revealed he was clearly miffed the state’s $10 million contribution had been overlooked. “There’s nothing better than sitting on Wayne Pearce Hill at Leichhardt Oval,” Prime Minister Albanese said. “My Government understands the important role suburban grounds play in the quality of life for Australians. “This investment will not only be great for the Wests Tigers, but will see Leichardt Oval continue to be a hub for school, women and girls’ sport. “Leichhardt Oval is a place where the faithful can go along and cheer their local sporting teams, and this funding from all three levels of government will ensure that spirit is preserved.” Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells said Leichhardt Oval had a rich history in Australian sport, and the government wanted to see that continue. “So many Australians have fond memories of not just watching the Tigers’ NRL and NRLW teams but soccer games and a range of women’s sporting events,” she said. “It’s time for this iconic oval to receive the love it deserves, so I welcome our partnership with the NSW Government and the Inner West Council to deliver these significant upgrades.” Her state colleague, NSW Sports Minister Steve Kamper said all levels of Government were joining to future-proof Leichhardt Oval. “Whilst Leichhardt Oval is the spiritual home of the Wests Tigers, this oval has become much more than that. It has become a true community hub and a home for women’s sport,” he said. “The NSW Government is committed to increasing the participation of women and young girls in sport. “This funding will ensure the stadium can deliver fit-for-purpose facilities for the next generation of elite, amateur and grassroots athletes.” Leichhardt Oval is on track to host 120 sporting fixtures in 2024, including both men’s and women’s national rugby league matches and dozens of other sport events including women and girls’ soccer. Leichhardt Oval has become increasingly expensive to maintain and significant upgrades are required to ensure it can continue to host elite, amateur and grassroots sporting events and training. The $40 million investment, to be led by the Inner West Council, will draw on the Council’s Leichhardt Oval Masterplan and includes: upgrades to new, female-friendly change rooms; increased seating capacity of 3,000 and a new northern grandstand. The Commonwealth is committing $20 million to the project, with the NSW Government and the Inner West Council investing $10 million each towards the upgrade. Fans had every reason to celebrate our return to HQ only days after it was announced the “Eighth Wonder Of The World” will receive $40 million in Federal, State and Inner West Council funding to ensure it will remain our spiritual home for decades to come. The Tigers 18 points came from three tries and three successful conversions from our captain courageous Api Koroisau as the players were inspired by the roar of “Ti-Gers! Ti-Gers!” from the near capacity crowd. Supercoach Benji Marshall applauded the fans after the match and dedicated the win to them. “To see our fans turn up like they did on The Hill, for the players that lifted them and to see them at the end there celebrating was special,’’ he said. It was also a special day for our 19 year old prop forward Jordan Miller and our versatile junior Heath Mason who played their first NRL games on Saturday. Heath said ‘’just to hear our amazing fans’’ was an experience of a lifetime and he was thrilled a section of the crowd had come to support him on his debut. Once again our Player of The Match was Api, who switched from hooker to the halves in what Tiger legend Steve “Blocker” Roach hailed as an inspirerd ‘’master move’’ from Benji. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen an effort like that, Api was all over the joint,’’ he said. And it was Api’s brilliantly weighted Tigers fans roared us to a memorable 18 points to 10 win against the Gold Coast Tiddles at Leichhardt Oval HQ on Saturday afternoon to set us on the road to Grand Final glory. ☐ Tigers “Captain Courageous” Api Koroisau played in the halves instead of his usual role at hooker in what Tiger legend Steve “Blocker” Roach described as a ‘’master stroke’’ from supercoach Benji Marshall. Our Man Of The Match and our captain courageous Api Koroisau has plenty of support from family and friends at Leichhardt Oval HQ. grubber kick that led to star forward Fonua Pole crossing for the match winning try in the 77th minute to cap a great game where he ran for a powerhouse 120 metres against an error strewn Tiddlies’ defence. Our Papua New Guinea international centre Justin Olam scored two tries and crossed for his 50th NRL try at the Keith Barnes stadium end of HQ in the 12th minute on the back of some great ball skills from halfback Aidan Sezer. Justin was over again in the 59th minute for a try made for him by tackle busting prop forward Samuela Fainu. It was great to see our highly rated fullback Jahream Bula take on a more attacking role. Jahream wore jersey No. 21, with the No.1 jersey “rested” on Saturday as a mark of respect and tribute to legendary Balmain fullback Keith “Golden Boots” Barnes as this was the Tigers’ first game at Leichhardt since Keith’s passing in April. Prop Stefano Utoikamanu also had a strong game and made 192 metres from 17 runs as well as completing 32 tackles. After the game Aidan summed up the victory at HQ when he said it was simply that “we wanted to win, more than them.’’ Next Sunday we take on The Faders from the hot air capital at Cameltown from 4pm. SEE YA THERE!
