Ryde’s Persian community
prepares for Nowruz
Ryde’s growing Persian community will celebrate
New Year on the weekend of Saturday March 20 and
Sunday 21 and next week’s edition of The Weekly
Times will also celebrate this special event.
Known in Persian as ‘’Nowruz’’ - which means New
Day - it will be an especially wonderful celebration
this year as the community hopes to put the Covid
pandemic behind it.
Russell Sajadi is the Manager of the Bahar Persian
Supermarket in Church Street, Top Ryde and said
Nowruz is one of the most ancient New Year events
still celebrated today.
“Nowruz at the time of the vernal spring equinox,
or beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere,
is the first day of the New Year by the Persian so-
lar calendar which is widely celebrated for up to two
weeks,” Mr Sajadi said.
“Nowruz is deeply rooted in the Zoroastrian faith’s
belief system, however Persian mythology holds
that Nowruz existed when history did not.”
See Next Week’s edition for a special Nowruz fea-
ture. To advertise in this feature contact Howard Rich
at The Weekly Times on 9807 6666.

They kick-off their NRL pre-

the Hot Air Capital when they
serve out the first major shock
of the year to Tricky Ricky’s Can-

And the Tigers won’t be at their
best for the opener coz new
halves combo of Luke Brooks
and Adam Doueihi won’t be op-

extra day hols courtesy the NRL
judicial committee.
But this year’s squad is the best

We have to wait to Sunday April
