A terrified 10-year-old boy suddenly for misbehaving was sent to the office of the school principal by his frustrated teacher. After the principal heard the child’s side of the story, she slowly and carefully said: ”I notice that you have never been sent to my office before and sometimes good boys do misbehave, and you are a good boy. Please look at this pencil in my hand now I will slowly write your name in this book in pencil and if you are not sent to see me again this year I will rub your name away, is that a deal?” The boy was not sent to the office of the principal again for misbehaving and from that day he was a model of good behaviour. He was an immense success in life as a husband, parent and as a leader in the corporate world, he often shared this story with others and said this school principal could not have been gentler and more effective in helping him in life. Jesus of Nazareth had something to say about forgiveness in these words; ”Do not condemn and you will not be condemned, forgive and you will be forgiven.” (Luke Chapter 6, Verse 37) Father Martin Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain in Sydney A popular and well-respected Christian story teller was English Catholic priest Canon Francis Drinkwater (1896-1992). A fantastic response “Our Field of Mars Reserve Heritage Walk and the Winter Wildflower Walks were all fully booked with substantial waiting lists,’’ the team at the Society said. “On the heritage walk, we saw remnants of various activities in the Reserve before and since Eu- ropean settlement. “Some members and friends of the Society were surprised by our observation that July is the perfect time of year to see many species of colourful native flowers in our bushland, but the walkers were not disappointed. “Along the Sand Track we saw many species in flower, from abundant Woollsia bushes to a few examples of dainty pink Boronias and Stylidiums.” Ryde Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Protection Society says it’s thrilled to report its Winter Wildflower Walks were a great success after being mentioned in this weekly column.

4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 2 August, 2023 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT History lecture in Hunters Hill By John Birch AM The Vienna Cottage Committee The Heritage lecturer this year will be Professor Kate Fullagar on the topic of her forthcoming book, Bennelong and Phillip: A History Unravelled. Phillip and Bennelong knew each other for only five years but their relationship has occupied a central role in the history of Australia’s modern founding. It helped forge connections between British and Indigenous people around Sydney harbour during the initial period of culture shock. It has also been seen ever since as a mixed allegory of Indigenous-settler relations in all former colonies. The book narrates the famous relationship between Phillip and Bennelong in a new way. It unravels their story from end to beginning: from posthumous evaluations to their later years, to their journeys together and apart, to their initial meeting, and finally to their respective origins and different ancestries. Looking back on Phillip and Bennelong opens up fresh perspectives on both men. It reveals how much Phillip was entangled in the service of an escalating global empire. His approach to Bennelong spoke of a deep and ongoing history of determined colonization. It also overturns the popular image of Bennelong as a tragic victim of cultural collision, showing instead that his withdrawal from the Sydney colony after Phillip’s departure was a triumph rather than a defeat. Their negotiations with one another illuminate both a harsher empire and a more persistent Indigenous presence than usually acknowledged. The Musical Program will be performed on the historic Bevington organ by Callum Tolhurst-Close, a Sydney-based Organist and Conductor, who holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) and an A. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Our FIFA Women’s World Cup success Dear Sir, As predicted in this newspaper many weeks ago the FIFA Women’s FIFA soccer World Cup has proven to be an enormous success not just here and in New Zealand, but around the world. It only took five days in to the tournament to break the old record for the number of tickets sold at a Women’s World Cup, just over 1.5 million tickets sold and counting. People here and in New Zealand have embraced this tournament and have attended games in huge numbers. There were record numbers watching the Matildas live and on television, with the Matildas first game beating both the cricket and rugby league in the television ratings. These numbers reflect the growing strength and appeal of the women’s game, particularly the Matildas. Retail shops have reported huge sales of Matildas merchandise, with some selling out LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 as quickly as they can stock their shelves. In the first game, Accor stadium was covered in green and gold, with fans of all ages showing their love and affection for our beloved Matildas. The most pleasing aspect for me was the huge number of young girls attending. The happiness and smiles on their faces have even moved this old coach. Hopefully they are being inspired to train hard, be appreciative of their coaches and remain focused and humble with the aim of becoming our future Matildas. There has been drama and upset results with powerhouse France getting away with a draw against the Reggae girls from Jamaica, and England, a tournament favourite just scraping through against the minnows of Haiti. Our friends in New Zealand beat Norway in a stunning result and the whole nation there has now fallen in love with the Football Ferns. The USA, the warm favourite for this tournament, started with a shaky, unconvincing performance. Unfortunately for our Matildas, our star striker and world super star Samantha Kerr suffered a calf injury which probably means she will be missing for 2 to 3 games. Her injury has been reported extensively in the press on a daily basis and the only good thing about that is that it keeps our politicians ugly heads off the front pages of our newspapers and on television. Hopefully until Sam Kerr returns to the field our other Matildas will step up and do the job for Australia. It is hoped the smooth implementation and record numbers of fans supporting the game will convince the FIFA big wigs to one day soon grant the rights to a men’s soccer World Cup to Australia and New Zealand. We have shown the world that we are ready and willing to support such huge tournaments in record numbers. An important note to finish on is to thank ace journalist Anthony Stavrinos from our beloved TWT, who constantly promotes and supports soccer and sport in general. It is hugely appreciated by your readers. TONY IKONOMOU Hunters Hill SEE ALSO LETTERS PAGE 14

Volunteers included The Big Lift, a UTA student organisation founded on the philosophy of ‘paying-it-forward’ with small acts of kindness and vol- unteering helping to build stronger com- munities; a cub pack; and local residents. For more information, visit: www.friendsoflanecovenp.org Don’t throw our children to the dogs, warn councillors Staff recommended a 12 month feasibility study of Eastwood Park, Pioneer Park, Waterloo Park North, Granny Smith Memorial Park, Banjo Patterson Park and Lardelli Park. But councillors warned during Tuesday night’s council meeting of risks to children at Gladesville’s Banjo Patterson Park and damage to the cricket pitch in Eastwood. Liberal Clr Sophie Lara-Watson and Labor Clr Penny Pedersen urged staff not to recommend Banjo Patterson Park. “We are all aware of the mauling at Santa Rosa Park,’’ Clr Pedersen said. “You don’t put (off leash) dogs and children together, Banjo Patterson Park is not a great area, it has a great children’s playground and people throw blankets there and picnic by the river.’’ Councillor Pedersen said parents’ views should be considered. “So many parents say their children are scared of dogs,” she said. Independent Clr Roy Maggio warned of damage to the turf cricket pitch on the upper Eastwood Oval and said cricket players would never forgive the council if it were damaged. Labor Clr Bernard Purcell shares his concern. “I agree with Clr Maggio, the upper Eastwood Oval should not be trialled because I don’t want to see anything happen to that cricket pitch,” he said. But Liberal Justin Li said it was a better alternative to the lower end of the oval. “I have a concern about Eastwood Lower Oval because we’ve got a playground there and I think the upper oval is more contained and fenced, so I’d rather damage to a stationary object than to a child.” Councillor Maggio also wants community consultation. “There’s been no views from the community who own dogs and we had that fiasco in Meadowbank because we didn’t consult the community,’’ he said. Liberal Clr Trenton Brown said ‘’we’ve done plenty of consultation on this” but suggested the trial include a display of posters at each of this six sites advising park users how to have their say. Councillors also suggested that funding be put aside for fencing at parks found to be suitable as dog off leash areas. The trial is expected to cost $13,850 and follows a recent report from staff that dog off-leash parks are justified by their social and health benefits and there is a growing number of dogs and dog owners in the City of Ryde. “Despite the recent additions to the portfolio of off-leash sites, some areas of the City (comprising 16 percent of residences) are not adequately serviced by the City’s existing off-leash facilities and when delivered the six additional sites proposed in this report will place nearly 93 percent of City residences within a twenty minute walk of at least one facility,’’ the staff report to councillors notes. RYDE Council staff have been warned of the risks associated with two parks to be considered as dog off leash areas. ☐ The children’s playground at Banjo Patterson Park in Gladesville.
6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 2 August, 2023 Left turn on red signs removal is frustrating warns councillor They were removed at the intersections of Charles Street and Victoria Road, Lane Cove Road and Buffalo Road as well as Pittwater Road and Ryde Road. Liberal Clr Sophie Lara-Watson called on the local Traffic Committee to investigate the reinstatement of the left hand turn permissible during red lights at the three intersections. “The left hand turn permissible during a red light upon stopping has been removed from the following intersections, causing additional commuting times and frustration to commuters who have not been consulted on the changes,’’ she said. In other traffic related news, Liberal Clr Justin Li has called for traffic calming devices around Eastwood’s shopping precinct. “In light of the tragic accident on Rutledge Street we need Transport for NSW agreement for street calming,’’ he said. Councillor Li has also called for a report into the installation of a red/green arrow at the traffic lights for motorists turning right from East Parade into Rutledge Street and the installation of a red/green arrow at the traffic lights for motorists turning right from Rutledge Street into Shaftsbury Road. Council will consider the remov- al of street parking on weekends between Trelawney Street and Shaftsbury Road during peak traffic periods The removal of Left Turn Allowed After Stopping signs at red lights was done without prior notice to City of Ryde residents and has caused widespread frustration, councillors were told during last week’s council meeting. ☐ Clr Justin Li ☐ Clr Sophie Lara-Watson Locals wowed by Women’s World Cup action as victorious Matildas live on Raso’s edge The Matildas have left football fans across Australia buzzing, after smashing Olympic champions Canada 4-0 to progress to the Round of 16 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Aussies kept their Cup dreams alive by thumping Canada in a do-or-die match late Monday in Melbourne, also making history to finish at the top of their group. And the Matildas did it without star captain Samantha Kerr who now has another seven days to prove her fitness for the knockout stages. With plenty of interest in the important final group stage match for the Matildas, local fans wanting to join others to support the Aussies had plenty of option with the game screened at venues including: North Ryde RSL, Club Ryde, Club Eastwood, Sporties, Gladesville RSL and City of Ryde’s live site at Eastwood Plaza, which was put on with the assistance of West Ryde Rovers. Interest in the FIFA Women’s World Cup has been phenomenal and Monday night’s match was the Seven Network’s most watched show of the year with a staggering 2.16 mil- lion Aussies tuning in to watch the Matildas game on broadcast TV nationally. Even games not in- volving an Australian team have been popular - on Sunday night, 40,000 fans packed Sydney Football Stadi- um to watch Colombia beat Germany 2-1 in one of the most exciting games of the tournament so far. The Matildas’ epic win has sent reigning Olympic champions Canada — who remained scoreless — crashing out of the tournament. The Australians needed to win to avoid an embarrassing group stage exit without rely- ing on Ireland to beat Nigeria. They will now finish top of group B with six points, after Nigeria drew 0-0 with Ireland in the other game to claim second and knock out Canada. The Matildas will re- turn to Brisbane on Tuesday and prepare to play the team who fin- ished second in Group D, most likely Denmark or China, in Sydney on August 7. TWT On-theSpot PHOTO (Michelle Haywood) ☐ Matildas hero in Monday night’s stunning 4-nil demolition of Canada was going to press this week, England was scheduled to play China in a match that would largely determine Group D’s standings. “I never, ever doubted the players in terms of stepping up and performing well,” Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said. “We knew it was going to be tough but I knew the performance was going to be solid.” The Matildas 3-2 loss to Nigeria last Thursday left their World Cup hanging in the balance and stand-in captain Steph Catley noted the team’s performance “wasn’t good enough.” Four days later, after sharing some honest truths, they looked a completely different team. The way the Matildas knocked out Canada — without Sam Kerr, but with a game strategy and an abundance of determination, has them - and fans - believing they can go all the way. Hayley Raso scored a first-half brace to give Australia the upper hand with emerging star Mary Fowler adding a third in the 58th minute. Hometown hero Steph Catley buried a penalty to seal a famous victory in front of 27,706 fans at Melbourne’s AAMI Park and top spot in Group B. Mackenzie Arnold pulled off a magnificent save in the 67th minute to maintain a clean sheet. Shifted to the left wing, with Fowler returning from concussion, Caitlin Foord starred all night and combined brilliantly with vice-captain Steph Catley. Right-back Ellie Carpenter was relentless while Emily van Egmond, who held her spot ahead of Cortnee Vine, justified her selection with a cool-headed performance in Australia’s front two. Centre-backs Clare Hunt and Alanna Kennedy were calm-headed while Kyra CooneyCross and Katrina Gorry were busy all night in midfield. “There was a fire in ev- eryone’s eyes and I just knew everyone was out there to do everything they could to win at all costs,” Catley told reporters. “It was a mature performance, to be honest. They had a lot of the ball. They’re an incredible team. They defend well, they keep the ball, they create chances. “So the way we defended together and the way that we countered that was mature. “At times in the past, we’ve let moments like that get the better of us and I think it shows we’ve come a long way and we’re ready for a tournament like this.” Defender Ellie Carpenter admitted the backs-to-the-wall factor inspired the victory. “But we need this every match now and we’re not going to get too far ahead of ourselves,” she said. “We need to reproduce that performance – because if we play like that, we can beat anyone.” In pulling through, the Matildas delivered the perfect response to the pressure that had been piling on coach Tony Gustavsson. He insisted his charges could deliver without their backs to the wall, but admitted their “never say die” attitude will help in the knockouts. “Just the fact that it is must-win all the way through I think helps this team because it means the pressure will be on every single game,” Gustavsson said. “If we can have the same mindset moving forward, it feels really good.” Fans cheer Australia’s thundering victory in Melbourne. Photo: AAP Matildas superstar Sam Kerr remains under an injury cloud but has another seven days in which to prove her fitness for the Women’s World Cup knockout stages. Kerr was medically cleared to play a role off the bench and prepared to risk further damage to her troublesome left calf if Australia needed her on Monday night. But her teammates heeded their captain’s request to get the job done without her. “The only words Sam said to the team was ‘make sure you win without me so I can get another week to try and recover and get healthy’,” Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said. “The team responded and said, ‘yes, we will, you sit on the bench tonight and we’ll win for you’. “You could see that commitment from the players, ‘let’s do it so Sam gets another week’. “Having that belief as a team (to be without) in my opinion the best striker in the world, which I think Sam is, and still go out and play the fluid football we did against the Olympic champions and score four goals, I think is very impressive.”

Ryde to build Korean memorial The memorial will be built in Memorial Park in Meadowbank and responds to a successful motion put by Clr Daniel Han. “It would be appropriate to commemorate the sacrifice of Australians during the Korean War,” Clr Han said. “Close to one hundred Ryde residents served in this war.” The 27th of July 2023 marked the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice that ended the fighting although both North Korea and South Korea and still officially at war. Around three million people - including many civilians - were killed during the war and of the 18,000 Australian soldiers who served in the war, 1,216 were injured and 340 were killed. “The City of Ryde has a rich history of honouring and supporting our veterans and acknowledging their sacrifices,’’ he said. “The City of Ryde is the local Council with the highest number of Korean migrants in NSW and it would be valuable to have a place of connection between the Korean migrants in Ryde and the sacrifice of Australian soldiers in the Korean War.” The memorial will be built with advice from the Returned and Services League, the Korean War Veterans Association and the Korean Veterans Association in Australia. Its design and construction will include feedback from community members, veterans and local historical societies. City of Ryde councillors voted unanimously last week to build a memorial to honour the Australian soldiers who served in the Korean War of the 1950s. ☐ Australian servicemen are pictured with their Gloster Meteor jets during the Korean War. Sculpture honours Parramatta’s eel Created by Kamilaroi artist, Reko Rennie, the 7.5-metre tall sculpture titled Where Eels Lie Down, depicts two eels rising from the ground and crossing each other as they play. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Sameer Pandey said it is made of grey granite stone and aluminium and honours the Dharug People. “The name of our beautiful city, Parramatta, is derived from the Dharug word Barramada meaning; where eels lie down,’’ he said. “This incredible public artwork is a celebration of the significant history of Aboriginal culture here and Dharug connection to the eel and Parramatta River.” The sculpture will glow at night with the eels lit up in blue. “I feel honoured to have been given this significant opportunity to create work on Dharug Country that pays homage to both the historical and present-day use of the Burramattagal,” Reko Rennie said. “I hope it becomes a marker for the City of Parramatta as a place where people can come together and share stories and experiences.” A modern art sculpture which honours the history of the eel in Parramatta was unveiled in Parramatta Square last week. ☐ Lord Mayor Sameer Pandey and artist Reko Rennie stand beside the new eels sculpture in Parramatta Square. Armenian president warns of catastrophe The broadcast on the current humanitarian crisis was made by Artsakh’s President Arayik Harutyunyan to warn the world that food, medicine, fuel and humanitarian aid will soon be depleted and will leave 120,000 Armenians on the brink of catastrophe as a result of the 225 days blockade imposed by neighbouring Azerbaijan, which surrounds the besieged enclave. President Harutyunyan said 30,000 children are at critical risk of malnutrition and sick and elderly residents are dying from a lack of medical supplies. The blockade shuts the only road link from Armenia to Artsakh - the Lachin Corridor - where it is alleged Azerbaijani special services agents (disguised as environmental activists) have only allowed a few Red Cross vehicles and Russian peacekeeping troops to cross the border. The Armenian National Committee of Australia has condemned Azerbaijan - which claims Artsakh as its own territory - and has described its support for the blockade as support for a genocide. Azerbaijan and Turkey continue to claim the blockade is being carried out by environmental activists. Hundreds of families from Ryde’s Armenian speaking community tuned into an internationally broadcast Emergency Address from the besieged Armenian Republic of Artsakh last week. ☐ Artsakh’s President Arayik Harutyunyan warns the world of an impending humanitarian catastrophe.

Northern Suburbs (* This is not an exhaustive listing of local sales and represents only a sample of those reported) Billion dollar rail upgrade goes ahead Premier Chris Minns said the government will spend $1.1 billion on the project which will convert the existing T3 Line into a 21st century high-tech metro line. “Our government is announcing that we will proceed with the Sydenham to Bankstown conversion,’’ he said. “We’re also announcing that the Sydenham to Chatswood section of the metro is on track to open in 2024. “That means more than just a train every four minutes and it takes a massive amount of pressure off the city circle so we can run more train services on other train lines.” Sydney Metro Chief Executive Peter Regan said buses will replace trains during the upgrade. “While we understand this disruption will be difficult for passengers and the community, significant work has been done to minimise the level of disruption while we deliver this transformational new service,’’ Mr Regan said. “We are laser focused on opening the City section between Chatswood and Sydenham next year and look forward to welcoming passengers on board.” Transport Minister Jo Haylen said the work will be fast tracked to minimise disruption. “While the conversion won’t be easy, we’ve come up with a solution that will get it done in up to twelve months instead of the original timeline of fifteen to eighteen months,’’ she said. “Because we’ve taken the time to plan this section of the project properly, we’ll be able to deliver metro services quicker and ease the pain caused by converting the line. “There is a lot of work still to do but our commitment to the full City & Southwest project scope is an important first step.” She said commuters will welcome the upgrade which promises more trains, more often. “Currently, some stations on the Bankstown Line receive four trains an hour in the peak,’’ she said. “When this section of the metro is completed, they will receive a train every four minutes and that’s a massive increase in services.” The State Government will upgrade the City & Southwest Metro railway line - as well as the Sydenham to Chatswood link - after it was given the go ahead by the Sydney Metro Independent Review. ☐ Chatswood will benefit from the new rail upgrade says Premier Chris Minns.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. LAWNMOWER – Masport, 4st with catcher. Novena To Saint Martha O St MARTHA, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro the great favour Thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour) Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary’s and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are Ended. No matter how difficult. For prayers answered for Hunters Hill Family. LETTERS to the Editor An incredible result for the community FROM PAGE 4 Dear Sir, On the 17th of July an incredible result was achieved by the local community. The members of Denistone Bowling Club rose up to defend their club. With more than 84% of votes cast to save the club - a percentage larger than Vladimir Putin’s last election win. When the vote was called the Denistone patrons filled the room, the only voters on the Carlingford side of the ledger, were chairing the meeting. The result was obvious from the moment you pulled into the car park. There was not a car spot in sight and double parking was the rule, rather than the exception. Denistone locals arriving by the car load ☐ Denistone’s bowlers are united in their resolve to keep Denistone Sports Club in the community and those with the opposing (‘Carlingford’) view, were nowhere to be seen. When I think about this vote, I recall the story of Brush Farm Bowling Club and TG Millner Field. Brush Farm, another bowling club bought by Carlingford Bowling club then sold off. TG Millner, bought by North Ryde RSL with grand development plans that thus far, have been thwarted. As the years go on residents are more aware of clubs buying and selling community assets and have continued the fight to stop them. I hope this result is decisive in saving Denistone Bowling Club, but somehow, I feel the fight has only just begun. CAMERON LAST Denistone arenas, or even n e i g h b o u r h o o d parks,” mural artist Zoe Edema said. “Strangers become friends and we come together to witness, participate in and celebrate the joy of sports and competition.” Mayor Clr Yedelian OAM said the baseball mural brought sense of vibrancy to a local landmark. “The action-packed new mural at ELS Hall Park pays tribute to our sports loving community and should provide great motivation,” he said. The Council will commission other murals as part of the NSW Government funded Graffiti Management Project. Local clubs in one goal defeats It is the second consecutive week of defeats for both clubs with APIA going down to Blacktown City by two goals to one at Lambert Park on Saturday and North West Sydney losing by one goal to nil against Sydney FC at Valentine Sports Park on Friday night. APIA Leichhardt took the lead in the 23rd minute when striker Jack Stewart scored his tenth goal of the season with a powerhouse shot from 12 yards out. But Blacktown shocked the home side with goals in the 60th and 68th minute as APIA threw every- one forward in the final twenty minutes. APIA coach Franco Parisi said that, de- spite the loss, foot- ball was the winner. “We saw a lot of good football from both teams tonight, there was some indi- vidual brilliance and so for football it was very good,’’ he said. “I thought we did really well throughout the game so we’re very happy with the guys and feel we could have scored more, but that’s foot- ball.” Sydney FC can thank a 91st minute strike by Mitchell Glasson at Valentine Local National Premier League clubs APIA Leichhardt and North West Sydney Spirit both lost on the weekend. ☐ Action from the APIA - Blacktown City match (pic: Football NSW) Sports Park for its three points. North West Sydney Spirit captain Jared Lum said his side wasn’t ruthless enough. “It is hard when you concede late to lose the game as it was a good effort but we didn’t capitalise on moments in the second half,’’ he said. “That’s been the story of our season, being good in the middle but missing some ruthlessness up top so we will work on that and we have four games left to finish the season on a high.”

It was our Captain Courageous Api Koroisau’s time to be remembered for his bravery, leadership and Never Say Die spirit during Friday’s thrilling game against the Bunnies. It was only a few weeks ago that Api sustained a career threatening double break of his jaw that Super Coach Tim Sheens said would put him out of the team for eight weeks or more. But Api had no intention of giving in to injury and proved his commitment with another Tigerish performance in front of a Scully Park stadium packed with Tiger fans. Our captain courageous was involved in everything good we did and scored our first try in the eighth minute when halfback Luke Brooks slid in a grubber kick which drew a deflection and fell into Api’s waiting arms. He’s now crossed for a four-pointer in the last three matches he’s played and this time converted his own try. In the second half he bravely wore a shot from the Bunnies after placing a well-weighted grubber kick that was grounded successfully by powerhouse forward Isaiah Papali’i in the 43rd minute. But it was a couple of outstanding plays in defence that had our fans on their feet chanting “Ti-Gers” “TiGers” with only a two point gap separating the two traditional rival clubs as the clock counted down to the final siren. In one especially golden moment, Api crunched the Bunnies halfback to jolt the ball free and immediately backed up the tackle to send lock forward Fonua Pole on to score our third try in the 56th minute. Captain Courageous ended the match with a try, one try assist and 120 kicking metres and a game-high 47 tackles. Balmain Tigers legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach couldn’t praise him highly enough. “He’s an unbelievable competitor and we’ve been rapping him pretty much the whole game,” Blocker said. Super Coach Tim said Api is still finding his feet again after the horrific jaw break and he was impressed by the effort he put in and Tigers Super Coach Tim Sheens’ boys showed glimpses of their Grand Final winning form against the Bunnies at Tamworth last Friday. ☐ Tigers Captain Courageous Api Koroisau has come back from a career threatening injury to play a man of the match game against old rivals Souths Bunnies at Tamworth last Friday. ☐ This young fan was among hundreds who barracked for the Tigers in Tamworth. his leadership by example. Last week Api extended his contract at Concord which should make him a Tiger for life and part of Tim’s Grand Final winning team. The Tigers play the Faders at GIO Stadium on Sunday arvo at 4pm. Hope to SEE YA THERE!
