He was mocked for prayer It was this man’s practice before he would depart to openly say a prayer and make the sign of the cross for a safe voyage. On one such trip the ferry was full of laidback young people who pointed and laughed at the skipper for praying, they thought it was so old fashioned and unnecessary! Within three hours of leaving Aberdeen the ferry now on the open sea, suddenly encountered an almighty storm and many of the young people were terrified that the ferry would sink. A few of them banged on the door where the skipper was steering and pleaded that that he pray with them for a safe arrival. He shouted back to them in these words; “I say my prayers when things are calm when things get rough, I just concentrate on the task in front of me but please pray yourselves.” Fortunately, due no doubt to the skill, confidence and prayers of the skipper, the ferry made a safe landing to the Lerwick wharf on the Shetlands. When they landed the young passengers knew how fortunate they were and spontaneously gave the old skipper a standing ovation. In the book of Ecclesiastes, we hear; “There is a time for everything in life.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital chaplain There was a veteran ferry skipper who a few times each week would take people on a twelve-hour trip from the port of Aberdeen to the port of Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. Wednesday 9 August, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 3 JB’s World We have dreamt of opening Pane e Prosciutto since we were children. To share what we grew up with and what ultimately made us who we are. Simplistic and traditional Italian Flavours with our artisan panini and our Italian deli, with a few more surprises along the way. 86A Charles Street, Putney NSW 2112 OPENING SOON A U S T R A L I A N S EVERYWHERE were saddened this week two years ago with the passing of two Aussie icons: Judith Durham of The Seekers fame and Olivia Newtown-Johns of even wider musical fame and campaigner for breast cancer. JB has strong recollections of both. Firstly, I took my then young niece Gorgeous Georgina Gilkes now Maxted to see Olivia in concert at the then Lyric Theatre in George Street Sydney when both were very young and we all fell in love with a young Olivia with memories that will never die. Secondly, when I was on a ferry going across the English channel with a party group from Lon- ☐ Janette and John Howard. ☐ World War Two veteran Col Moir is pictured with Terry Ryan (centre) and John Booth AM. don to Belgium I was magically contacted by the captain of the ferry who played over the PA system The Seekers from Australia. And I must confess at the time I had never heard of them as I had been away and they had burst onto the public arena overnight! So from then on I had to take a close interest in their progress to international fame. * * * WHO WAS it that said: History repeats itself? Well this week I can repeat last year’s intro to JB’s World reading: WHO WAS it that said it will never rain again because of global warming and man made climate change? No prizes for guessing but one was a so-called professor who was paid $180,000 for part time work at a local Uni and the other hoaxer became a Prime Minister. How do they answer the coldest day ever in one state this week and floods in another? They should be blamed and shamed for misguid- ing schoolchildren and gullible adults, especial- ly young school teachers who brainwash their young students. What do you reckon? 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 9 August, 2023 LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT By Danielle Francis Hunters Hill HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Le Vesinet students reflect on their life in Hunters Hill We asked them for some highlights and memories. For Tiphaine Veyssier, the food journey has been fascinating. Dinner is eaten so early here, versus France (8.30pm), and it was a shock to eat cheese before the meal instead of after. But she approves! She has also loved hearing lyrebirds, watching live rugby league and the World Cup with her host sister Maya Tedder. Inès Idja just loves Sydney - with its clean streets and friendly locals, both the people and the koalas, kangaroos and a wombat called Neville - although she thinks the Aussie birds can be a bit too friendly. Her favourite memory is a family trip to Cairns, seeing the Great Barrier Reef and the sky train to Kuranda, and teaching French card games to her brothers Cooper (8) and Sidney (5). Eugénie Cotte and Heidi Coppet hosted Australian girls Emeline Johnson and Zoe Henville last Christmas, and now that it’s their turn, they’re relishing the green spaces of genteel Hunters Hill which is quite like home in Le Vésinet. Their first glimpse of the Sydney skyline reminded them of New York. They’ve noticed the differences in our education system. Certain Australian aspects are more strict, like single sex schools, fixed timetables and donning a uniform was a shock! But they love the more friendly interactions between teachers and students. They’re also noticing our different eating habits, like snacks during the day, unlike France which sticks to three square meals. A favourite food they’ve tried is Acai bowls with ice cream, fruit and grains. Faris Bouattour has had a unique experience, spending some time boarding at Joeys with his Recently you may have met our six French visiting students .. Dans un clin d’oeil (in the blink of an eye) .. their trip is passing and they’re having a ball. host brother Hugh Woodbury. He’s combined that with fantastic excursions like learning to surf in Manly and exploring the local area – even discovering Le Vésinet Drive in Hunters Hill. He has met many friendly people and a few four-legged friends as well, including dingoes on Fraser Island. Most importantly, he judges our hot chips to be superior to the ‘frites’ at home. Life in another country offers amusing challenges. Fantine Hurstel has made her host sister Iolanda Bilbie giggle more than once by hopping straight into the drivers seat and then having to swap to the passenger side. One of her highlights is snorkeling in the Whitsundays, seeing a dazzling array of coral and fish and she also enjoyed frocking up for the school formal at Wenona. Let’s not forget the Australian families from Hunters Hill and surrounds who are making all these experiences possible. They’ve loved it too, enjoying sharing our culture while hearing about how France compares. There will definitely be tears at the airport. Meanwhile, next year’s batch of young students are practicing their French, as they prepare to jet over to Le Vésinet in December. For information on the program or to apply, visit https://www.huntershill-levesinet.org.au Danielle is from the Hunters HillLe Vesinet friendship Committee Delivering for Hunters Hill We are well along the way to delivering the objectives identified in our program of works and in our Operational Plan. Our community has told us that road infrastructure is a key priority. Council has assessed roads, footpaths, kerbs and gutters to build on our Asset Management Plan to help ensure critical infrastructure is well maintained now and in to the future. Our capital works program for footpaths was completed in full, as part of our aim to support and encourage safe walking, cycling and vehicle travel across our municipality. Projects to upgrade our local playgrounds and outdoor spaces have also delivered great results. New shade cloth was installed over several of our playgrounds, and major works at three key sites, including Boronia Park, Gladesville Reserve and Figtree Park have progressed and are on track for delivery for our community to enjoy. Our road safety program has received great community feedback and participation, through workshops and campaigns supporting schools, parents and carers of young children and supervisors of those learning to drive. We look forward to delivering another ‘teach a learner driver’ online workshop on 23 August, and another round of free child car seat check vouchers, valid until 20 September. At our Library and community space, The Yarn, we continue to provide services for all our residents, with 3750 loans in a six-month period and the continuing popularity of our regular children’s sessions, including ‘Baby Bounce’ on Fridays at 11am and ‘Story Time’ on Wednesdays from 11am. Our bushland continues to be conserved and protected through the outstanding efforts involved in Bushcare programs. Volunteers put in 398 hours and planted 600 native plants across the local government area along with the community planting project that we held for National Tree Day as part of Moocooboola. I am pleased to report that Council was presented a progress update of our service delivery so far this year and it is great see our programs and projects tracking so well. The evolution of transport Hunters Hill is well-known and much-loved for its history and our museum is one way we share the story of our municipality with the community. Tomorrow evening (10 August) at 6pm I have the pleasure of opening the History of Hunters Hill Transport Exhibition, staged by the Hunters Hill Historical Society at the Museum. The exhibition will feature rare and original photographs and memorabilia such as ferry lights and ticket operating machines from early Sydney when ferries were the only practical mode of transport in Hunters Hill. Contact the Museum on 0417 067 511 regarding opening hours to come along to learn about the evolution of the transport links in our municipality. Remembering those who gave their lives in the Pacific victory Dear Sir, We gather to commemorate Victory in the Pacific 78 years ago and the end of Australian Involvement in the Vietnam War 50 years ago. In one conflict the result was victory and the warriors returned to a country celebrating not just the end of hostilities but victory over evil, it was almost a biblical war. The other war, the warriors returned to loved ones but also a profound public sentiment that ranged from dismissive of their experiences or hostile in the extreme. Nearly all of our World War Two veterans have passed now and the war they fought in is remembered through books, movies and commemorations. Their war was truly a war against evil, both Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany were brutal and with machine-like efficiency were able to maximise death, particularly amongst the captured populations. The war in Europe had concluded in May 1945 with the fall of Berlin and the death of Adolf Hitler but the War against Japan looked like dragging into 1946 with the battles in Japanese home islands expected to be extremely bloody. The Kamikaze attacks foretold of the mayhem to be expected in the fight for the homeland. However, in August 1945, even while Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur were planning the invasion of Japan and Australian forces were engaged in Aitape and Wewak the world was about to see the power of the Atomic Bomb. On 6th August and then on the 9th bombs dropped on Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. Three days later the Japanese surrendered. Much debated after the event, the might of the atomic age ended the war and probably saved millions of lives if the Japanese islands had to be subdued by land war. It took over twelve months for the troops to be repatriated and many were kept in Japan as an occupation force. This slow process helped the troops to unwind from the war and talk amongst themselves. It is probably why many returned home without the outward signs of PTSD. They may have had some of the symptoms but were able to manage or as in my father’s case responded to treatment. The Vietnam War was more intense with percentage of time in combat or on patrol was much higher than previous wars, the technology of air transport and helicopter insertion had driven up the percentage of time under stress to nearly double of previous wars. It could also conceivably see a warrior in the field on one day and home in Australia and on leave within a week if not less. From an intense period with your best mates to alone in too short a period. Some of our predecessors in the RSL were less than proactive in helping these returning warriors and perhaps led to a feeling that the new guys were not welcome. I know I got the impression in 1974 that as a serving member of our armed forces we were no more welcome than civilians. Whether that was true or not did not matter, I stayed away from the RSL until 1995. So today we need to consider three things: Remember that in all wars we need to be grateful for those prepared to fight and defend our way of life. Celebrate the valour and sacrifice regardless of outcome. Hold our leadership to account for the outcome of our involvement in conflict and the treatment of our returned warriors. Speak up to hold us to our values and our leaders accountable. Perhaps we need to put new meaning behind “Lest We Forget” LCDR PETER COLTHORPE, RAN RTD President North Ryde RSL Sub Branch Healthy curiosity Dear Sir, It seems, if you know a lot about, even one topic, then you have done pretty well. I reckon, if I lived for another eighty years, I wouldn’t even make a recognisable dent in the all the stuff I would like to know about! JOHN FRYER Ryde Quarantine bill unpaid Dear Sir, The NSW Treasurer confirmed this week that the outstanding QLD Hotel Quarantine (Covid) bill has now blown out from $40m to $105m and is still unpaid. While RevenueNSW is quite happy to pursue the working poor (motorists) with overdue and some times questionable parking fines of $120 it appears that RevenueNSW and the NSWTreasury Department are not pursuing their ALP colleagues in QLD with the same amount of vigour. We are constantly told by our NSW Premier, Chris Minns how the NSW Budget is constantly under financial strain and yet they let a Tax Invoice for $105m remain unpaid for two years. What a farce - try delaying the payment of your parking fine for two years. Write to your local NSW MP and point this out to them when they knock back your next community grant. CHRIS PIKE Ryde

Wednesday 9 August, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 A great day out at Moocooboola Thousands of local residents had a great day out at the Moocooboola Festival in Boronia Park on Sunday. ☐ The winner of best owner-dog look alike at Moocooboola went to Tealisha Clarke and Alfie the Golden Retriever. ☐ The winner of best trick dog at Moocooboola went to Patricia Walsh and Shakira the Dutch Barge Dog, left, and dog show winner, right, was Madeleine Simpson and Sally the Jack Russell Terrier. ☐ All roads lead to a successful and well-organised Moocooboola ☐ The Hunters Hill Historical Society tent at Moocooboola proved popular with heritage enthusiasts. Bennelong MP to be lobbied on Epping Bridge alternative While many motorists support a widening of the Bridge to ease traffic congestion, concerned residents hope to convince Mr Laxale a better option would be to increase the railway station’s capacity to host more services to take more cars off the road. Local resident Richard Ure said road congestion remedies - like the bridge widening - usually result in more traffic. “Is increasing the westbound capacity of the bridge considered to be a better alternative?’’ he asks “With connections to the Metro, the T9 line and the Central Coast line and having 12 trains an hour, Epping is one of the best connected stations on the network. “Giving access to the station for the maximum number of public transport users should be preferable to catering for more private transport especially when much of the work has been done already and the future is up, not out.” He said priority should be given to access between Epping and Carlingford. “The light rail from Parramatta to Carlingford is expected to open next year, the metro between Epping and the three Macquarie Park stations has been in use for a few years, but there is a gap between Carlingford and Epping,’’ he said. “Into this gap comes the decision to add lanes to the congested road bridge at Epping.” But Mr Ure said the bridge widening has an obvious problem. “The third westbound lane exits to Beecroft Road where it meets an obstacle in the lift and stairs to the pedestrian bridge,’’ he said. “There is no plan to move this obstacle so traffic will be directed to a rat run through Ep- ping.” The Epping Civic Trust meeting will be held at 7.30pm on August 15 at the Epping Church of Christ in Bridge Street. Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale has been invited to the upcoming general meeting of the Epping Civic Trust to hear concerns with the proposed widening of the Epping Bridge ☐ The lift and pedestrian bridge in Epping is an obstacle says local resident Richard Ure. Councillors call for World Cup ‘Live Sites’ continuation This would include the Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and it is hoped, the Final The meeting has been called in response to City of Ryde staff quashing live sites for the remaining matches “due to costs, participation to date, and the cold.” All three group stage Matildas matches were screened at live sites in Ryde by City of Ryde. Ryde Labor said it believed the matches were a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Sydneysiders to enjoy the thrill of a World Cup in an exciting and local atmosphere. “Not everyone can get to the stadium to watch these immensely exciting match ups,” Clr Purcell told The Weekly Times. “I would love to give local residents the chance to watch the Matildas make their way to the Final City of Ryde Councillors Bernard Purcell and Penny Pedersen are calling for an Urgent Extraordinary meeting to request that Council continue hosting live sites for the remaining Australian games of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. ☐ Ryde councillor Bernard Purcell (centre) with locals at Moko in Eastwood, enjoying the Matildas game on the big screen. The annual festival organised by Hunter’s Hill Council returned to the two Boronia Park ovals after being held at the Town Hall last year and cancelled during the pandemic lockdowns. “It was great to see the community come together to hold our traditional Moocooboola Festival,” Hunters Hill Mayor Miles said. “It is fantastic to have such a successful day back at Boronia Park Ovals.” The Mayor joined Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year, John Reading and a representative from QPet groomers in Hunters Hill Village to judge the Moocooboola Dog Show which was won by Madeleine Simpson and her three year old pup Sally who was named Best in Show. “I’m very excited and happy to win,” Madeleine said. Local dance ensembles and musicians took the stage and local sports clubs hosted interactive displays of pickleball and croquet. Council’s Bushcare volunteers ran a community planting project in recognition of National Tree Day and a plant giveaway. “The day was a testament of the strong sense of community spirit that exists in Hunters Hill,’’ Mayor Miles said. This selection of TWT On-the-Spot PHOTOS is courtesy of Lindsay Mar. in a fun and community environment. “While I respect the views of staff regarding these live sites, I think it is a misstep to not give locals the chance to watch the Matildas with their local community.” Clr Pedersen said it was an important time for women’s sport “and a focus on women’s sport will help grow women’s participation in our community sports programs.” After their two-nil victory over Denmark on Monday night, The Matildas progress to a quarter final tie on Saturday night in Brisbane against the winner of the Round of 16 elimination clash between France and Morocco being played at Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium as TWT went to press on Tuesday night. If the councillors fail in their attempt to have the live sites resurrected, you can still catch the next Matildas game on the giant screen in the greens at Club Ryde or at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club or North Ryde RSL. Moko at Eastwood, Gladesville RSL and Gladesville Sporties will also be showing games. Check with each venue for schedules.

8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 9 August, 2023 Rail trespassing trend triggers urgent warning Sydney Trains Chief Executive Matt Longland said intruding in the rail corridor is not only illegal, it could be a matter of life and death. “Over the past year, our camera network has captured 166 incidents of people trespassing in and around the live rail corridor across the Sydney Trains network,” Mr Longland said. “People trespassing in the rail corridor causes delays for trains and passengers. But even worse, if trains aren’t able to stop, it could cost someone their life. “Rail safety is all our responsibility and I urge everyone to please consider the impacts of their actions on our frontline staff.” Head of Sydney Trains Security and Intelligence Jess Sharpe said when a person is detected in the tunnels, trains are ordered to stop. “Anyone thinking about trespassing – think again. Not only do you risk your life, but it’s also a selfish act that can cause lengthy delays, impacting the journeys of hundreds of thousands of passengers across Greater Sydney,” Ms Sharpe said. “I’ve seen first-hand some terrifying incidents captured on our security cameras, with people putting themselves at serious risk of death or injury. “It’s also concerning to see many cases of young people running into tunnels with seconds to spare for pranks or social media. Incidents are typically higher on weekends and during school holiday periods.” Sydney Trains driver Jenilyn Maniebo is making a powerful plea, after witnessing countless incidents of reckless behaviour during her decade on our rail network. “Each time I see a trespasser I have to quickly blow the horn, apply emergency braking, stop the train, and ensure the corridor is clear. These close calls and fatalities leave drivers and rail staff distraught. An incident like this has a ripple effect impacting so many people,” Ms Maniebo said. Sydney Trains works closely with Police Transport Command to target and deter reckless behaviour. The minimum fine for people caught trespassing is $400 but this can be as high as $5,500. Rail Safety Week is an annual initiative of the TrackSAFE Foundation held in Australia and New Zealand to promote safe rail practices. It unites the rail workforce, police, government, and community groups by encouraging commuters to be aware and alert while travelling on and around the rail network. At the start of the National Rail Safety Week, Sydney Trains is reminding everyone about the dangers of trespassing into the rail corridor. Concord Hospital to get a new carpark The new carpark will provide more than 550 new spaces for patients, staff and visitors. New South Wales Health Infrastructure Acting Executive Director Northern Region Hayley Bell said the five-level multi-storey carpark is being delivered as part of the $32.4 million carpark project to increase parking for the recently completed $341 million Concord Hospital redevelopment. “We’re excited to be delivering 550 new spaces, which is on top of the recently opened on grade carpark that is providing 300 parking spaces for staff,” Ms Bell said. “When complete, the new carparks will increase capacity on the hospital campus to more than 2,300 spaces.” The new carpark will include accessible spaces and lift access. Security features will include CCTV throughout the car park and multiple duress points on each level. Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive, Dr Teresa Anderson AM said once complete the carpark will be used by visitors and staff alike. “We have partnered with Health Infrastructure to deliver the multi-storey carpark, which is part of a long-term strategy to improve the experience of visitors and staff at Concord Hospital,” Dr Anderson said. “We thank our staff and the community for their understanding and patience during the construction period and look forward to delivering this important project.” For more information visit: https://slhd. health.nsw.gov.au/concord Construction is underway on a new and long awaited multi-storey carpark at Concord Hospital. ☐ An artist impression of the new multi-storey carpark. The Service is being hosted by the RSL and the Cemetery is located on the corner of Delhi Road and Plassey Road in North Ryde. Victory In The Pacific Day commemorates the events of August 15, 1945 when Japan surrendered and Australia’s Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, announced the war was over. It is a day to remember Australia’s war ef- forts from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific region, including in Singapore, Borneo, Malaya, Papua New Guinea and New Britain. Around 17,000 Australian soldiers lost their lives. ☐ The Memorial to Australian servicemen and women at the Macquarie Park Cemetery. 2RRR gets federal government funding 2RRR’s chair Dino Mancini said the local station was the beneficiary of the government’s funding commitment to local community broadcasting. “This funding is vital to our development and operations with staff and volunteers working to broadcast content not covered by commercial radio,” he said. “At 2RRR 88.5FM, we strive to deliver community services announcements, local news and stories and music genres not ordinarily heard elsewhere including emerging Australian artists and multilinguistic programs. “Importantly, with adequate funding we can also outreach to the deserving local community services like The Northern Centre (family domestic violence), Streetwork (kids at risk) and Royal Rehab (disabilities and rehabilitation.” He said that without the funding, through the Community Broadcasting Foundation, 2RRR would have “no certainty to be able to maintain our services principally to people in the Ryde and Hunters Hill LGAs.” “We’re grateful to the Labor Ryde Regional Radio Co-operative Limited (2RRR 88.5FM) has received substantial funding from the federal government. ☐ Pictured in the 2RRR studios, l to r, technical director Keith Rider, 2RR chair Dino Mancini, station manager Natalie de Silver and Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale. The Marina (at the end of Margaret Street) recently released plans for the proposed develA residents action group is being formed to protest against a proposed redevelopment of the Woolwich Marina that will more than double the size of its harboured berths and moor large, luxury vessels. ☐ Will large, luxury craft be coming to the waterfront at Woolwich? ☐ Woolwich and surrounding parklands (image: Sydney.com) opment which are expected to go before the Regional Planning Panel as an item of state significance. If approved it will ad 36 new marina berths for a total of 79 berths. Independent Hunter’s Hill Clr and former Mayor Ross Williams supports the action group and said he will urge other councillors to support it. “This is an absolutely outrageous development proposal,’’ he said. “We are not talking about yachts but eight to ten of the enormous 35 metre long luxury craft on moorings that will extend 55 metres out into the channel, so it is no wonder all the sailing clubs are up in arms about it because the Marina already takes up much of the major sailing and ferry channel.’’ Margaret Street residents who spoke with The Weekly Times on Saturday - but declined to be named - said their major concern was the loss of views and vistas. They said previous Hunter’s Hill councillors had opposed large scale waterfront housing development on these grounds and the same principle should be upheld in this case. Councillor Williams agreed. “Not only will you not be able to see Cockatoo Island from the foreshore, you’ll not be able to see the foreshore at Kelly’s Bush from the water,’’ he said. “Even the current Marina is an over development so there are reasonable concerns about (blocked views of) Kelly’s Bush.” He said he would welcome an opportunity for the Marina to brief the Council. “I really hope the Council gets on the action group’s side,’’ he said. The Council and residents recently and successfully opposed a proposed expansion of the Gladesville Bridge Marina and the Pulpit Point Marina. The Marina’s plans can be viewed on the Hunter’s Hill Council website.

Petersham opened the scoring with a try before Hunters Hill hit back with a try to centre Ben Stewart. Fullback Ed Gregory scored two quick tries to create a safe buffer - or so the Hillies thought - Hunters Hill Rugby Club President Luke McCormack said. “Petersham was desperate to avoid relegation from Division One and posted three quick tries to erase the deficit and actually take a seven point lead,’’ he said. “ It appeared the Hillies had clocked off, but as has been the case all year when their backs are against the wall they do not panic.” McCormack said Hunters Hill not only showed strength but strength of character. “Consistent strong carries from number eight Jona Saumaisue and Skipper Steve Morton broke up the Petersham defence, and it was Ed Gregory and Cooper Henwood who took full advanHunters Hill Rugby defeated Petersham by 48 points to 41 at Camperdown Oval on Saturday. ☐ Hunters Hill Number 8 Jona Saumaisue battered the Petersham defence all day in the Hunters Hill win at Camperdown on Saturday. Sydney Olympic took the lead in the fourth minute with a goal to Roy O’Donovan and gave its fans hope of a miracle comeback with goals to O’Donovan in the 85th minute and to John Fitzgerald in the 88th minute. Match statistics reveal that APIA was dominant in all areas of the game but don’t acknowledge the fighting spirit of a gallant Sydney Olympic side that never gave up. APIA coach Franco Parisi praised the quality and commitment of players from both sides. “The crowd would have been happy, eight goals, so a lot of good football,” he said. APIA Leichhardt marksman Jack Stewart scored four goals in his side’s exhilarating 5-3 victory over Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday. ☐ APIA Leichhardt remain top of the table with a win against Sydney Olympic on Saturday. “We lost our way in the last 15 and it made the game interesting but we were comfortable and felt we deserved the win.” APIA lead the NSW National Premier League competition. Sydney FC secured a hard fought one-nil victory over North West Sydney Spirit FC through a 91st minute strike by Mitchell Glasson at Valentine Sports Park on Friday night. North West Sydney Spirit FC captain Jared Lum acknowledged his side threw away a point. “It is hard when you concede late to lose the game,’’ he said. “It was a good effort but we didn’t capitalise on moments in the second half. “That’s been the story of our season, being good in the middle but missing some ruthlessness up top. “We will work on that and we have four games left to finish the season on a high.” tage,’’ he said. “Man of Match Ed Gregory fin- ished the game with an impressive four tries and was ultimately the difference in a high scoring affair.” Next Saturday will be the final Round match with the Hillies hosting traditional rivals St Patricks Strathfield at Boronia Park. “It should be a huge day across all grades with the First Grade, Second Grade and Colts teams shooting for finals berths,’’ he said. Goals to Player of the Match Caitlin Foord and winger Hayley Raso on either side of the half-time break were decisive in front of 75,784 raucous fans. The massive crowd was more than the third State of Origin rugby league clash between NSW and Queensland, which attracted 75,342 spectators. Australia opted for an unchanged team to the one that saw off Canada 4-0 in its final group stage match of the tournament. Denmark started the game with energy and precision, resulting in the Danes dominating the Matildas in the opening exchanges. Despite the threats, the Australian defence continued to hold firm with Alanna Kennedy dominant aerially. In the 29th minute, the Aussies made Denmark pay with a blistering counter attack. Mary Fowler turned away from her defender after receiving the ball in midfield and played a perfectly weighted through ball to an on-rushing Foord. In front of her hometown fans, Foord calmly slotted her shot underneath Danish goalkeeper Lene Christensen to grant Australia a 1-0 lead. The goal – and the resulting roar of the crowd – lifted the CommBank Matildas who finished the half the stronger of the two teams. As in the opening stanza Denmark looked to apply early pressure, but after sustaining the pressure, the Matildas doubled their lead. Industrious all night, Kyra Cooney-Cross found Fowler from a wide position. Fowler connected with Van Egmond with the veteran having the presence of mind to play in Raso at the back post and she slotted home her third goal of the tournament. An almighty roar marked the 80th minute, as captain Sam Kerr made her first appearance of the tournament, quickly getting involved in the action when she fired over the crossbar not long after coming on. The CommBank Matildas will now head back to Brisbane with a Quarter Final fixture against either France or Morocco on the horizon this Saturday, 12 August with kick off at 5pm AEST. Mural celebrating matildas unveiled Meanwhile, a mural celebrating the CommBank Matildas has been unveiled on the iconic Bondi Beach Sea Wall in Sydney, Australia. Painted with exquisite detail by internationally acclaimed artist Danielle Weber and designed by Football Australia Creative Manager Ryan Ostle, the captivating mural is a powerful illustration of a team that has captured Australia’s hearts leading into and during their campaign at the world’s biggest women’s sporting event. An extension of Football Australia’s collaboration with Legacy ’23 partner, LEGO Australia, the mural looks to inspire future generations by celebrating the power of the CommBank Matildas and how they play. The artwork features eight of the current Matildas, including captain Sam Kerr (WA), vice-captain Steph Catley (VIC), highest capped Australian footballer Clare Polkinghorne (QLD), longest serving CommBank Matilda Lydia Williams (ACT), forward Caitlin Foord (NSW), midfielder Katrina Gorry (QLD), defender Charli Grant (SA) and Northern NSW stalwart Emily van Egmond (NSW). Matildas smash TV ratings eclipsing AFL, NRL audiences The Matildas’ powerhouse 2-0 win over Denmark - that sent them into the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter finals - was watched on Channel 7 by more people than last year’s AFL and NRL grand finals. Millions of people tuned in to make the epic victory the highest rating TV program of 2023, not only claiming bragging rights over the AFL and NRL’s main events from 2022, but also eclipsing all of this year’s State of Origin battles in rugby league and all the big reality TV shows. The Matildas’ victory reached an incredible 6.54 million people on Seven and 7plus, with an average audience during the game of 3.56 million. The game’s average audience of 3.56 million included a national broadcast audience of 3.18 million viewers on Seven (2.29 million in the capital cities) and another 384,000 viewers on Seven’s streaming platform 7plus. The latter figure is a record for an individual event on 7plus. ☐ The sails of the Sydney Opera House were lit in green and gold from 6pm until midnight on Monday in support of the Matildas (it worked!); and, right, artist Danielle Weber jumps for joy in front of her mural at Bondi Beach which celebrates the Matildas. In the lead World Cup, 25-year-old Kiera - who is part of the Melbourne Vix- ens squad and spent her junior days in Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA) competitions with North Ryde Spirit - was probably the least-talked-about goaler of the Australian squad. Most of the attention was on Cara Koenan, Sophie Garbin and reserve Donnell Wallam and which of them should play at goal shooter and whether vice-captain Steph Wood would be able to carry the attack line in the absence of Gretel Bueta. But in the final Kiera again slid under the radar and was a crucial ingredient in Austra- lia’s victory. ERNA president Karen Waud OAM said ERNA was proud of Kiera and the role she played in the Diamonds’ victory. “We are very proud of Kiera who played her grassroots at Eastwood Ryde Netball Association and ERNA Hawks,” she told The Weekly Times. “Kiera was focused on the job and delivered on the night and it’s heart warming to know Kiera’s family attended the games in South Africa and cheered her on.” She shone, shooting 15/17 and getting a crucial gain after replacing Wood before half-time. Austin also had 15 cen- tre pass receives, four second-phase receives and an impressive 17 goal assists to Garbin to be named MVP. “I don’t think I have words,” Austin said post-game. “I’m proud that I could go out there and win it for Australia. We wanted to write our own script and we did. “It took all 15 of us to come over here to win it. The girls who did it against Jamaica were incredible. Everyone that did it today is also incredible. “To have my family here, my dad and partner and sister all watching … I’ll remember it forever.” Ryde Sports Foundation chairman Rob Wilkinson also paid tribute to Kiera. ”Kiera Austin was one of our outstanding Sports Stars in 2012-13,” he said. ☐ Kiera Austin with the World Cup trophy during post match celebrations. “Like many before her, nominated by Eastwood Ryde Netball Association, she has gone on to great things with the game, now representing her country, as a member of the Diamonds.”

It was razzle-dazzle football at its best as super coach Tim Sheens gave Tiger fans a glimpse of the attacking flair to expect on our way to grand final glory. With halftime looming, David set up the first impossible try when he made a crucial interception near his own try line to race away towards the Faders’ line. Before he was tackled he threw a high, miracle pass across half the length of the field and straight into the arms of surging half back Luke Brooks. Luke then linked up with Charlie Staines and the left winger used his speed to finish the incredible full-field effort with a try in the corner. In the 57th minute captain Api Koroisau found David with a perfectly-placed cross-field kick that Three impossible Tiger tries and a milestone 100th four pointer for winger David Nofoaluma thrilled our fans in the hot air capital on Sunday. ☐ One hundred try scorer David Nofoaluma takes on the Faders. 728 Victoria Road, Ryde 2112 All enquiries: 9807 3344 Watch ALL World Cup Matches at Club Ryde Australia in the Quarter Finals Saturday August 12th at 5pm appeared to defy gravity as it hung in the air for our winger to become the first Tiger to score 100 tries since the joint-venture of 1999. Api then put up a bomb in the 71st minute as Luke made an electrified charge towards the Faders line to pluck the ball out of the air and score as the Faders looked on, stunned by his speed. Our captain courageous converted all three tries to set up a thrilling finish. Super coach Tim described the three impossible tries as ‘’brilliance’’ and commended every player on a great effort. David and Luke were the standout performers with Luke kicking for 370 metres, creating numerous opportunities and making try saving tackles.
