2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 January, 2024 Black cat has lucky rescue Foxtel Pussycat is available for adoption from Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals where she has lived since her rescue in 2016. “She had a handful of kittens with her when she was rescued in the grounds of the Foxtel studio,’’ the team at the World League said. “This was just before a massive storm came through that would have washed her and the little ones away, in the drain she called home.” Her kittens have since been adopted. “Could it be her turn to be re-homed this Christmas because Foxtel is finding it increasingly challenging to live with all the young cats here but has really improved her social skills with humans,’’ the team said. “She can be stroked and picked up and moved but not cuddled, yet. “Can you give her and WLPA the best Xmas present ever and take her into your family?” Foxtel is desexed, microchipped vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed. If you would like more information on her or want to meet her please contact the team on 0451 614 821 or admin@wlpa. org A black cat who almost lost all of her nine lives in a flash flood is this week’s Cat Of The Week. Father Martin’s Musings The light of the world This man I will call Ernie was returning to the airstrip he took off from that was now in the dark and for some reason the airstrip manager did not leave on the landing lights. So, all Ernie could do is anxiously circle the area knowing also he was running low on fuel. Fortunately, the neighbour next to the airstrip sensed what was happening and she quickly ran out to the farm truck and raced it to the beginning of the airstrip and turned on the high beam head lights, this was all Ernie needed to safely clear the truck and land the small plane. A retired rural commercial pilot many years ago shared with me this fascinating story. Devonshire tea at historic Carisbrook this weekend Located at 334 Burns Bay Road, Carisbrook House has a reputation for being haunted and each room has been painstakingly preserved in its original Victorian era splendour. “Your visit to Carisbrook this weekend will transport you back to life as you would have lived it one hundred and thirty years ago,’’ the team at Lane Cove Historical Society said. “The house is furnished as it would have been when the original owners moved in and you can wander through the rooms and experience the lifestyle of each room embellished with the trivia of daily family life in that era.” The Devonshire tea and scones are provided by volunteer guides. Tickets are $12 for adults and $30 for family groups. Historic Carisbrook House in Lane Cove will host a Devonshire tea weekend this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. ☐ Enjoy Devonshire tea in a Victorian era parlour. That night there were wild celebrations that things worked out so well! I share this story as I think that it links in with a great message and that is God has shown the initiative to send his son into the world by way of his son to be a light for people to live by. This light is Jesus Christ the son of God and of the Virgin Mary it is a light that has never been sent before or since. Whether people choose to live by that light is an enduring question and will be until the end of time itself. We hear in John’s Gospel (Chapter 1, verse 9); “the true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” Fr Martin Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney Parramatta’s Sea Of Light The Sea of Light installation will be located in the Great Hall and will give visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a world of glowing interactive art by contemporary Aboriginal visual artist Elizabeth Close. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said the free Sea of Light installation will be a memora- ble experience that combines art, technology and storytelling. “Sea of Light offers a unique opportunity for our community to engage with their creativity and explore the deep connection between land and sea,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for our younger residents to keep busy throughout the school holidays and also experience the newly reopened Parramatta Town Hall.” “I encourage everyone to book free tickets to visit the exhibition and be captivated by this extraordinary experience.” With a UV torch as a paintbrush, ticket holders will be able to paint and stencil their own voyage and steer ships that leave glowing paths in their wake, immerse in the wonders of the ocean, create their own nautical soundtrack, control colour and light, and discover sea creatures in a magical pond. Festive fun at Eastwood Chamber of Commerce’s last meeting for 2023 Among the highlights, Ryde councillor Bernard Purcell and ‘unstoppable’ Joey Chan serenaded attendees of the meeting. “He’s got a good voice but would probably just miss the cut-off to perform on The Voice (television singing competition),” said one attendee who asked not to be identified. Meanwhile, Ms Chan, impressed special guest ‘Santa Claus’ with a rendition of Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer, complete with Christmas reindeer get up. It was also noted that Santa’s prescription spectacles were identical to those of Club Eastwood general manager Steve Colquhoun. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT By Felicity McCaffrey of Hunters Hill TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Restoring our native bushland With over 500 visitors from all over Sydney the interest and enthusiasm was unexpected for this first year but reassuring that the post Covid interest in gardens, gardening and the importance of a healthy environment was not displaced. The winning gardens were a real tribute to the garden owners who all showed gardening expertise and a love of beautiful garden spaces. One of the winning categories was a ‘habitat friendly public space’ which saw part of the Great North Walk take first place, a sensory and visual delight. The Great North Walk is a walking track which runs from Sydney to Newcastle. The walk includes a huge variety of wildlife and scenery. Abby’s contribution, the winning entrant, to a small part of this walkway corridor in our municipality has been a labour of love. Over the last few years, she has worked hard removing a jungle of invasive weeds and planted out the walkway area with local native species. Restoring this area has had its challenges with rubbish removal, watering and mulching for weed suppression. Recently Hunters Hill Council have helped with mulch drop offs and some local bush care maintenance help. Since starting the restoration of this area Abby has seen many birds, amphibians and mammals return to this area. This work is an inspiring example of how one person can make a difference. The committee of the Spring Garden Competition would love to celebrate more of these endeavours in future competitions. This section of the Great North Walk is an area of vital habitat for small wrens, the endangered Powerful Owl, many lizards and ground dwellers, frogs and more recently wallabies have been returning. Keen birdwatchers can expect to spot a delightful array of birds, including the Eastern Spinebill, White-throated Tree Creeper, Spotted October the 8th saw the culmination of The Rotary/Hunters Hill Council Inaugural Spring Garden Competition and Open Gardens Day. Pardalote, Superb Fairy Wren, Scrub Wren, Red Browed Finch, King Parrot, Rosella, Kookaburra, Bush Turkey, Satin Bowerbird, Top Knot Pigeon, Wattle Bird, Black Cockatoo, Eastern Koel, Ibis, Rainbow Lorikeet, Kestrel, Yellow Thornbill, Silvereye, Grey Fantail, Grey Shrike Thrush, Rose Robin, Butcher Bird, and Eastern Rosella. Echidnas have been seen very close by in both directions. This walk can be entered through the easily accessible Buffalo Park, Boronia Park, or from the end of the drive at Pains Road. At the awards ceremony held at the historic Vienna Cottage and the neighbouring Hillman Orchard, Mrs Sandra Ross from the Garden Clinic and 2GB weekend talkback show gave a welcome talk on the importance of gardens and gardening for our physical and mental wellbeing as well as for our environment in general. While increased construction and urbanisation reduces our areas of natural environs, gardens whether public, private or community based become treasured areas of relief and sanctuary with profound healing effects on both the body and mind. We look forward to the continued community interest and support with encouraging the beautification and care of our unique local municipality. Felicity McCaffrey is a local conservationist. Update: Montefiore planning proposal The proposal seeks to make amendments to the Hunters Hill Local Environment Plan (LEP) 2012, with the aim of allowing for increased housing density for seniors on the current site. Initially, the Planning Proposal was rejected by the Hunter’s Hill Council in September 2023. However, the proponent, Urbis Pty Ltd acting on behalf of the Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home, requested an independent evaluation from the Planning Panel. On their assessment, the Sydney North Planning Panel independently determined the strategic and site-specific merits of the proposal, and recommended for it to continue to the Gateway determination stage. As is their role under the review mechanism the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, the Planning Panel has now taken on the responsibility of the Planning Proposal Authority (PPA) which means they will now manage the application, and not Council. The PPA will now submit the proposal to the Department of Planning and Environment to seek the Gateway determination where it will be reviewed to see if it meets all the conditions specified to proceed to the public exhibition and consultation stage. During the consultation stage, all feedback and comments will be handled by the PPA in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Environment. We understand the importance of keeping you informed throughout this process, so we will continue to regularly update our website with detailed information on how and when you can provide your feedback. Stay tuned to our updates by subscribing to our Montefiore project page on Connect Hunters Hill: connect.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/Montefiore. What’s on at The Yarn As the school break continues, Council is offering free activities to keep the kids entertained at our library and community space, The YARN. Council has been advised that the Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home site will proceed to a Gateway determination, after evaluation by the Sydney North Planning Panel. For youngsters aged 4 to 12 years there’s a free Cactus Craft session on this Friday 19 January from 11am, to explore their creative side. While at The YARN, be sure to drop by for a regular free storytime sessions for children aged 3 to 6 years and their carers, which will continue each Wednesday at 11am during the school holidays. Young readers can also sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge to help break the boredom and keep up their reading skills during the summer holidays. All events are free. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Boycott Woolworths this Australia Day Dear Sir, Unlike the CEO of Woolworths, I am proud to be celebrating Australia Day on 26/1/24. I am getting sick and tired of all the elites , so called “ p r o g r e s s i v e s ” , woke lefties, ABC types and cancel history wannabes, telling me how I should feel about Australia Day. The CEO of Woolies by pandering to the noisy minority has managed to put the long standing Federal Leader of the Opposition, Peter Dutton , offside with a call for a boycott of his stores until the decision to cancel Australia Day sales is reversed. If a German retailer makes a similar decision we should not be too concerned, but for a respected, well known Australian retailer like Woolworths, makes such a woke political decision (not a retail decision) we should be very concerned. Coles on the other hand are doing the exact opposite of Woolworths and still celebrating Australia Day and will be getting ALL my family retail business going forward. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Prioritising Heart Health Dear Sir, As we embrace REDFEB, Heart Awareness Month, this February, Heart Research Australia is dedicated to reshaping how Australians approach cardiovascular well-being without causing financial strain. Beyond our collective effort to raise funds for life-saving research, our goal this year is to shed light on the financial and health implications associated with heart disease, affecting individuals regardless of their financial circumstances. Heart disease touches the lives of 2 in 3 Australians and stands as the leading cause of death. Prioritising heart health is an investment in both personal well-being and financial stability. In the midst of escalating living expenses, allocating resources for health might seem like a luxury. However, overlooking heart health can result in severe financial consequences, impacting wages, work capacity, career advancement, and long-term financial stability. Knowledge plays a pivotal role in fostering a healthier heart, with eight out of ten cases of premature heart disease and stroke preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. From hearthealthy, budget-friendly diets to accessible exercise options and stress management techniques, there are numerous practical and cost-effective strategies. We invite all Australians to explore our free online Heart Hub, offering a wealth of expert advice on cultivating heart-healthy habits. Wednesday 17 January, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Parramatta is first council to celebrate Dragon Year The giant dragon by Amigo And Amigo will ring in the festivities in Parramatta Square and Centenary Square until February 18. “Soar into the New Year with fiery enthusiasm on New Year on Saturday, February 10 as we celebrate the auspicious and powerful dragon, the zodiac creature that brings blessings, prosperity and harmony,’’ a Council spokesperson said. “Head to Parramatta Square and Centenary Square to welcome the good fortune of the New Year with the dragon and lion dances, workshops and activities, delicious food, and live entertainment.” The full program will be announced next week. Parramatta will be the first Sydney Council to welcome The Year Of The Dragon when a giant dragon will be on display from January 31. ☐ Lion dancers in Parramatta celebrate the New Year. Boronia Park ‘sell off’ rumours are just fear mongering: Aboriginal Land Council The Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council has lodged a claim for 150,000 square meters of Boronia Park bushland that includes football fields and netball courts as well as bushland walking tracks in an area classified by Hunter’s Hill Council as a bush care management zone. There has been speculation within the community that the Land Council could seek to have the land reclassified as freehold, allowing for potential development. The rumours have been fuelled by the Land Council’s move to build 450 dwellings and a cultural centre in bushland on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, although this land was specifically acquired to provide homes and jobs under a Northern Beaches Development Delivery Plan in 2022. The Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council last week refuted the rumours of a Boronia Park sell-off as “fear mongering”. The Chief Executive of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council Nathan Moran said making claims for Crown Land “gives us something back for all the other land we’ve lost” in the New South Wales since colonisation and there are 40,000 similar claims for “recompense” across the state. The Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council Charter specifically outlines it’s community based responsibility for acquired land. “It is Metro’s role to protect, care and manage the sites not only for the benefit of our members, but for all Australians to appreciate for generations to come,” it states. It nonetheless has powers to “facilitate business enterprise in accordance with the Act” and “provide, acquire, upgrade or extend residential accommodation” for Aboriginal persons. Hunter’s Hill Mayor Zac Miles said the outcome is for a court to decide, not the Council. “We would want to make sure there is no excessive development and the claimants maintain (the land) as open space as per their commentary in the media so far,’’ he said. “But it is something we have to take seriously and we will respect the process.’’ The Boronia Park claim was initially lodged by the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council in 2009. A record number of 545 land council claims were granted in the past financial year. An Aboriginal land council which has lodged a land claim on Boronia Park in Hunters Hill has described rumours it has plans to acquire the land to develop property on it as ‘fear mongering’. ☐ Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council CEO Nathan Moran. Moradian murder suspect charged Forty eight year old Alen Moradian was shot dead while sitting in his car in Spring Street, Bondi Junction in June last year. Task Force Magnus investigated links between organised crime and the murder while task force detectives raided an unidentified home in Macquarie Park on Tuesday, January 2 where they arrested two men, aged 27 and 28. They were taken to Gladesville Police Station, where the 27 year old man was charged with eight firearm and drug related offences and participating in a criminal group. The 28-year-old man was charged with drug-related offences and participating in a criminal group. Other search warrants in Macquarie Park led to the seizure of 1.5kg of cocaine, 844 grams of Methylamphetamine, three DECCDs, and a pistol with 23 rounds of ammunition. On Wednesday, January 3 task force detectives – with assistance from the Tactical Operations Unit – raided a home in Fairfield Heights and arrested a 24-year-old man who was charged with murder, drug and firearm related offences and participating in a criminal group. Police allege the 24-year-old man was the gunman who murdered Alen Moradian. Police also allege a criminal cell was conspiring to murder four high-profile men from Sydney’s north-west on behalf of another network. Police will also allege the criminals are linked to a 722kg importation of cocaine seized by police in Ryde, which State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad investigated under Strike Force Ballyana and Strike Force Veil. A police raid on a unit in Macquarie Park earlier this month has led to a suspect being charged with the murder of Alen Moradian. Growing disquiet over treatment of Australia Day They made their feelings known in an impromptu protest over the weekend in front of Aldi’s Eastwood store. “We’re not happy about this trend,” one local told The Weekly Times. “Australia Day is a time for celebration and we don’t need corporate giants with ulterior motives putting an damper on that. “I hope everyone votes with their wallet and avoids supermarkets that have distanced themselves from our special day on January 26.” Aldi has followed major retailers Woolworths and Kmart in ditching Australia Day paraphernalia ahead of celebrations later this month. The German-owned supermarket chain confirmed its Australia Day Special Buys catalogue will not return in 2024. Some stores will also be operating under reduced trading hours due to the public holiday. Ryde councillor Roy Maggio said locals who feel strongly about the issue should seriously consider supporting those retailers, clubs, businesses and organisations that embrace Australia Day. “Australia Day on January 26 is a special day for so many of us in the community,” he said. “We may descend from all parts of the world, but being Australian is what unites us all.” He said there had been a worrying recent trend by some in the community to turn a day of pride and celebration into “something we should be ashamed of for some reason.” “Now we’ve got some of the big corporate players thinking they can interfere with the love of our country,” Clr Maggio said. “That’s why we need organisations like Club Ryde, which is out there proudly promoting Australia Day by putting on a free BBQ for its guests and also handing out free merchandise.” While supermarkets like Woolworths and Aldi were doing their best to play down Australia Day celebrations, Club Ryde was wearing the Aussie colours on its sleeve. In its Australian-flag themed flyer, Club Ryde is promoting a free barbecue at the venue on Australia Day, unashamedly urging locals to “grab a free sausage sanger” while offering “free Aussie merchandise all day (while stocks last).” Members of the community, including former Ryde councillors and mayors, contacted The Weekly Times to express disappointment that citizenship ceremonies, usually scheduled on Australia Day, were this year scheduled on January 25. But in a statement to The Weekly Times, City of Ryde said it was a proud supporter of Australia Day and would be conducting Citizenship Ceremonies on Thursday January 25 – as part of Council’s annual Citizen of the Year presentation event – and on Friday January 26, with both ceremonies to be held at the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. “Council is also hosting its official Australia Day celebration at Ryde’s Backyard BBQ on Friday January 26 at Meadowbank Park from 4pm - 9pm,” it said. A group of locals have expressed their dismay at Aldi’s decision to follow the path of a handful of Australian retailers who have discontinued their Australia Daythemed products and promotional campaigns. ☐ Locals - including Ryde Community Forum chair Tony Tang and Ryde councillor Roy Maggio - staged an impromptu protest at Aldi in Eastwood on Saturday over the German retailer’s decision to follow the lead of retailers including Woolworths and Kmart in eliminating Australia Day-themed products and campaigns. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 January, 2024 Mayor says ‘red tape’ to blame for the Putney beach debacle The Parramatta River beach was expected to be open for the Christmas holiday period and Council contractors were ready to install a swimming safety net in October when “unforeseen changes to the external stakeholder approval gateway approval” held up the project. The unforseen changes forced the Council to issue a media release that states: “Unfortunately, due to complex and evolving approval processes for construction on land that is not owned by Council, the project has been delayed.” Mayor Yedelian told The Weekly Times new harbour foreshore regulations mean the beach requires the consent of the Foreshore Authority and the Council has been required to lodge a new development application to meet the conditions of consent. “It is bureaucratic red tape,’’ he said. “Council has been working hard on getting this amazing new community asset operational in time for the warmer weather and we are disappointed that these unforeseen issues have delayed progress.” He stressed that everything is ready to go, from the Council side. “We have already completed major work at the site, including the construction of stairs for easy access to the beach and we continue to monitor water quality which remains positive,’’ he said. “I am looking forward to seeing the community using this wonderful new riverside recreation area which is local, safe, and it’s beautiful.” City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM has blamed bureaucratic red tape for the failure to open the new Putney Park Beach for summer swimming. The Family Model of Care supports each resident in continuing to feel like they are living at home, maximising their independence, and respecting individuality, diversity, dignity, choice, and privacy. Twilight’s art therapy program has been running for over four years, and each year, Art Therapist Joanne Lee feels the residents gain more from the sessions. Some residents find it a means to reconnect with their sense of self and inherent creativity, as it provides a meaningful way to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, nurturing a renewed sense of purpose and accomplishment. For others, art therapy fosters social connections with group art sessions and outings Art therapy has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing the lives of older indi- viduals residing in Aged Care settings. It offers them a pathway to re-discover pur- pose and meaning and connect creatively with their community. ☐ Carmela drawing a model ☐ Vernon in ‘the zone’ to galleries and exhibitions like the Archibald and Sculpture by the Sea, encouraging social interaction, communication, and the formation of new friendships. During 2023, the program was enriched even further by the participation of volunteer artists from the community, such as internationally renowned ceramics artist Mitsuo Shoji and well-known portrait artist Yve Close, bringing a new level of experiential creativity for Twilight residents to engage with. The Annual Art Exhibition held at Hunters Hill Village Hall, January 15-24 from 9 am to 3 pm weekdays, is an opportunity to display works created by residents across all Twilight homes, from Grace Gardens at Dural to Glengarry at Mosman, Glades Bay Gardens at Gladesville, Horton House, our women-only home at Gordon and of course, Hunters Hill Village. Sales of artworks at the auction on Wednesday, 25th January, 6-8 pm will fund the expansion of the art therapy program. ☐ Putney Park Beach was deserted over the Christmas holidays.

PROTECTING RYDE’S FUTURE I am calling upon businesses and residents of City of Ryde, if you haven’t already, to please join our campaign to have a say on the future of the Macquarie Park Innovation District (MPID). This follows on from a number of controversial planning decisions by the NSW Government to rezone vital commercial land in our Macquarie Park Innovation District to build more apartment towers. The proposed rezoning of the Macquarie Park Innovation District’s commercial core from employment lands to housing will: • Change Ryde’s economy • Bring more residents burdening the already strained infrastructure HAVE YOUR SAY OPEN COMMUNITY CONSULTATIONS You are invited to have your say about documents, projects and proposals that are currently on public exhibition, or provide feedback on services and concerns that affect the community. • West Ryde - Meadowbank Renewal Strategy (Closing 18 February 2024) • Dog Off-Leash Trials 2023 (Closing 20 March 2024) Want to find out more? So when we asked why there was no political disclaimer, as required by the NSW Electoral Commission, he set us straight. The ‘Maggio’s’ branding was there to promote his nephew’s popular cafe and bakery which was now spreading its wings from Cammeray to North Ryde. Local competitors needn’t worry about losing any business - in fact, it’s likely the opposite will be the case based on the Cammeray experience. Customers queue to get a taste of the Maggio’s authentic cafe offering, but not everyone manages to wait it out with some popping into the neighbouring cafes. Maggio’s Italian bakery and pasticceria will be a welcome addition to North Ryde and will attract new customers to the Cox’s Road shopping strip. When The Weekly Times first spotted the hoarding pictured above at the former Delitalia site at Cox’s Road with the words ‘Maggio’s coming 2024’ we thought independent Ryde councillor Roy Maggio was kicking off an early start in his campaign for popularly elected mayor. ☐ TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Council has purchased this property from the Carlingford Sports and Bowling Club. The Club needs to satisfy a number of conditions prior to Council taking formal ownership of the property and this process may take several months. In accordance with a Council resolution from May 2023, the City of Ryde has executed a contract for the acquisition of the Denistone Sports Club at 59 Chatham Road, Denistone. During this period, the site will continue to be managed and maintained by the existing owner and Council will not have any involvement in the operation of the site. Following the contract conditions being met, Council will initiate a community consultation process on the potential future use of the site. Council has engaged with the lawn bowlers who currently use the site to understand their needs and expectations and will seek a suitable agreement with them to continue bowling activities at Denistone Sports Club until the longer-term management of the site is finalised. Further updates will be provided as the transfer of the land to Council’s ownership progresses. John Alexander backs rebel tennis The venture would be similar to golf’s breakaway Saudi Arabian backed LIV tour and ten- nis authorities are reportedly concerned about it. It is feared an elite tour could outshine the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open with these tournaments suffering a loss of prestige. But Mr Alexander, who is a member of the ABC’s commentary team for the Australian Open, said more international investment in tennis is a good thing and noted the World Tennis Cham- pionship breakaway, financed by Texas oil baron Lamar Hunt in the 1970s. He also said it would increase the amount of prize money for more tennis professionals, more often. “Investment in tennis should not be seen as a challenge, but as an opportunity to expand the game and give more working opportunities to more professionals be- cause the game is a little top-heavy,” he said. “You see what happened in LIV golf, and as what happened with the World Tennis Championship, the peace pipe was then smoked with the ITF and the Masters and the Grand Slams and they all came together.’’ He said it could also be an opportunity for unknown, future champions to shine. “The trickle down is not there right now, if you’re out of the top 100 in men’s or women’s you’re not doing that great and it’s very expensive to play on the tour,” he says. “The main ingredient is money, I guess.” A rebel international tennis venture has been backed by former Bennelong MP and tennis great John Alexander OAM. ☐ Former Bennelong MP and tennis great, John Alexander OAM ☐ The Denistone Sports Club site NRSC said the news has upset its players, coaches and network of supporters, dozens of whom gathered on the weekend at Magdala Park to protest at being removed from the venue that the club has called home for decades. NRSC said that in late 2023, it became aware of plans by City of Ryde to take away its use of Magdala Park. “Having been involved in the original creation of the playing field back in the 1980s and playing at Magdala for more than 40 years, North Ryde Soccer Club members are devastated at the prospect that they won’t be playing football at Magdala Park in the upcoming 2024 season and likely, beyond,” NRSC said in a statement. “Whilst the Magdala Park Master Plan adopted in 2021 acknowledges football as a significant and ongoing activity at Magdala Park, this more recent change in direction by Council makes no sense at all. “Football in our local community is thriving. Minis numbers are growing, Girls and Women’s football is experiencing massive growth and the number of adults of all ages, wanting to play football is continuing to grow.” NRSC president David Anderson called on the community to rally in support of the club. “We ask our local community to rally around this cause and make sure that City of Ryde adopts the original proposal that maintains NRSC Soccer as the principal sporting user of Magdala Park for the winter sporting season and keeps football on Magdala Park,” he said. Ryde councillor Roy Maggio, a former player at the club and also a former baseballer at the North Ryde RSL club, said NRSC had been using Magdala Park for decades and it would be devastating for club members to no longer be able to use the ground for weekend games. “There is no blame game here, just commonsense must prevail. Associations and clubs must be consulted of any matter affecting their operation,” he told The Weekly Times. “With growth of the population and an increase in sport in Ryde, we need to be more aware and informed about the arrangements in place for all sports.” Clr Maggio said he had submitted a motion for February’s council meeting seeking to allow more consultation with the associations and clubs. “It’s crucial that Council, associations and clubs work closely together for the benefit of the sporting community,” he said. City of Ryde told The Weekly Times that staff had been liaising with representatives from the North Ryde Soccer Club and North West Sydney Football (NWSF) in relation to the allocation of Magdala Park on weekends through the 2024 winter season. “This issue has arisen due to the unavailability of Gannan Park for this winter due to work being undertaken to provide two new rectangular fields at that location, with new sports field lighting to part of the area, a brand-new amenities building, and storm water harvesting system,” it said in a statement. “Magdala Oval #1 was deemed the most suitable One of TWT Territory’s largest sporting organisations, North Ryde Soccer Club (NRSC), has appealed to City of Ryde to reverse the decision to boot its players off Magdala Park (No. 1) in North Ryde for the forthcoming season to instead accommodate baseball. By Anthony Stavrinos North Ryde Soccer Club calls for Magdala Park decision reversal ☐ Members of the North Ryde Soccer Club family at Magdala Park No 1 during Saturday’s protest (TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO) field for the relocation of Ryde Baseball and Pacific League Baseball clubs from Gannan Park due to its location and existing baseball infrastructure. “Magdala Oval #2 continues to be allocated to NWSF for weekend use, while retaining its allocation for weekday use by NWSF as well.” City of Ryde added that when the Gannan Park upgrades are completed, the project will realise new space for organised sport and passive recreation at a cost of more than $7 million. But a solution may be imminent, with Council confirming it has not yet finalised any allocations for the 2024 winter season. “A meeting has been scheduled between staff and the football user groups for Thursday 18 January 2024,” City of Ryde said. “Staff will discuss with the groups their concerns in relation to the allocation of Magdala Park and try and best work through these challenges as Council implements the delivery of new infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population.”

The 26-year-old will leave the Panther Pets to play in our 2025 grand final winning side twenty years after he cheered us on to grand final glory in the 2005 final. It was the first game of rugby league he watched and he backed a winner. “I was on a camping trip with my family and I got to see Benji do his thing out there and that inspired me and ever since that point, I’ve had a Tigers’ towel and I wouldn’t let my mum wash it,” Jarome says. He said an opportunity to play under Benji was the reason he left the Pets after playing 107 games over six seasons. “I’ve always been a big fan of Benji and the way that he holds himself and I got the opportunity to chuck the boots on with him in the Maori camp and got to room with him which was pretty cool,” he says. During that time Jarome has made seven State of Origin appearances for New South Wales and is regarded as one of the world’s best five eighths. Benji says he’s ‘’super excited’’ with his six million dollar signing who knocked back a long term contract from the Pets and interest from the Hush Puppies. “His experience as a genuine premiership-winning playmaker will be great for us and the future of our club. We love the way Jarome plays his footy and even better, he is a great person,” Benji says. Jarome will also reunite with a few of his former teammates Api Koroisau, Brent Naden and Charlie Staines. The full Tigers NRL Squad has resumed training at Concord and has welcomed a new sponsorship deal with the Concord-based construction company PAMA. PAMA will sponsor the team’s playing shorts in 2024 and 2025. PAMA Chief Executive Danny Tahan said his firm will also contribute to the club’s community based initiatives. “We believe that being actively involved in the communities where we work and live is essential and we are immensely proud to be part of the Tigers’ family,” he said. Tigers six million dollar signing Jarome Luai has revealed he was a boyhood fan of the club and his idol was current head coach Benji Marshall. ☐ Tiger stars Adam Doueihi and Alex Twal welcome new sponsor Danny Tahan to the club. ☐ Jarome Luai is the Tigers six million dollar signing
