Father Martin’s Musings To sacrifice your life In the year 1908 this village had a sole telephone operator her name was Mrs Stephanie Brooks. She was a much-loved member of the community and I am sure that she was the keeper of many secrets! Just before sunset one day she received and responded to an urgent message that the river along the plateau of the valley was about to burst its banks and people needed to urgently move to higher ground. Within 30 minutes she contacted forty households and fortunately they moved to higher ground. Two days later her body with the old-fashioned telephone headset still strapped on her was found 20 kilometres floating down from her home. Mrs Brooks saved the lives of over 200 people and within the district of Folsom her name is revered. We are now living in a time and within a culture where it is normal for many people to live with what could be called a consumer mentality. This does not create a healthy and a sustaining heritage for any generation to follow. No one lived these words of Saint Paul of Tarsus more than Mrs Stephanie Brooks when he wrote; “Be prepared to offer your body as a living sacrifice that is pleasing to God.” (Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 1) Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain in Sydney In the American state of New Mexico there is a small community called Folsom, the founders of this community decided to build a community right in the middle of a big valley. Keep Smiling! - JOHN F BOOTH AM Australian-made ferries to take to Parramatta River The new Parramatta Class ferries have been designed by Incat Crowthers, leading naval engineers based in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. “The NSW Government is committed to building things here again to create jobs, boost manufacturing and end the failed offshore imports of the previous Liberal Government,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said. “This commitment will produce Aussie-made NSW-designed ferries equipped with modern propulsion technology to ferry passengers well into the future.” “I’m looking forward to the day I can announce a brand new NSW built ferry. It won’t be easy, and it will take time, but we are determined to do it.” The NSW Government said the Parramatta Class ferry design would be a vast improvement on the 10 overseas-made River Class vessels that entered service in October 2021 under the previous Liberal-National Government. It said issues that plagued the River Class included: Not being able to fit under some bridges with passengers on the top deck; Asbestos; Sub-standard fit and finish; Wheelhouse window angles making night operations dangerous. Engine stalling; Potential of fires or electrocution caused by sub-standard electrical equipment; and sub-standard steering components, were other noted issues. SEVEN NEW Australian-made ferries will take to Parramatta River after the NSW Government awarded the construction tender to Richardson Devine Marine Shipbuilders in Hobart. ☐ What the new Parramatta Class ferries will look like The approximately 43 defects pushed their service commencement dates out by well over a year. Transport for NSW has worked closely with the naval architects, operator Transdev and union representatives to ensure the faults that plagued the River Class ferries are not repeated. While aesthetically similar, the new Parramatta-class vessels won’t include upper deck seating that was deemed too dangerous to be used when passing under Camellia Railway Bridge and Gasworks Bridge. The new ferries will also be future-proofed, allowing for future conversion to electric propulsion as battery, charging and engine technologies improve. Ferry engines are usually replaced after five years of service, providing a number of opportunities to make these upgrades during the 25-30 year working life of the Parramatta Class ferries. The seven new vessels will replace seven Cairnsbuilt RiverCat vessels, which are ready to retire after 30 years of faithful service. “The RiverCats have served the Parramatta River faithfully for over 30 years, these new ferries will have the same 200 person capacity, while using 40 per cent less diesel,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said. “It’s exciting to be supporting Australian manufacturing, with ferries that are ready for a net-zero future.” The RiverCat vessels were the first passenger ferries to chart a course all the way to Parramatta wharf in 1993. Construction of the new ferries will begin in July. NSW Labor says over the last decade NSW has lost 42,000 manufacturing jobs in the same time that Victoria only lost 27,000 and QLD gained 6,000. “What’s more, NSW has missed out on 4,000 more jobs due to offshoring,” it said in a statement. “The NSW Government is committed to building things here again.” But the Opposition said the ferry announcement was another broken promise, saying it falls short of the Labor Government’s commitment to build public transport vehicles in NSW. “Firstly, this investment in providing world-class public transport services was secured under the former Liberal and Nationals Government,” Shadow Minister for Transport Natalie Ward said. “This is a great deal for Tasmanian workers, but workers in NSW are getting shafted by a Premier who is now sending jobs he promised them to another state. “Manufacturing elements of the Sydney Ferry fleet in Tasmania is not a revolutionary step in domestic manufacturing, the previous Government utilised the capability during our time in office.” She said in 2015 the Liberals and Nationals Government awarded Incat Tasmania a contract to build six new ferries in its Hobart Shipyard and in 2020, it announced three new Emerald class ferries were to be completed in Port Macquarie with 70% Australian content for the ferries including all the design, procurement, engineering, and project management for the project. “This announcement is a smokescreen by the Government to cover up for the facts that they haven’t delivered on their election commitments and can’t guarantee when the jobs they promised will be available,” Mrs Ward said.

Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill It’s time for local gardeners and green thumbs to get the gloves on and showcase their work for the 2023 Hunters Hill Spring Garden Compe- tition - entries open this Saturday (1 July). Hunters Hill Guest Column Recently the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill celebrated its 65th birthday. The Club was chartered 65 years ago on An- To The POINT zac Day in 1958 and at the birthday celebration took the opportunity to raise funds for the victims of the New Zealand Cyclone and flood. The Cyclone left thousands of displaced locals with at least four dead. Attendees at the birthday function gave generously and as a result a $10,000 cheque was sent to assist the Rotary Clubs in the Napier region providing help and assistance to the most in need and most affected by the crisis. Closer to home the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill is delighted to be involved in organising the ‘Hunters Hill Garden Competition 2023’ in conjunction with the Hunters Hill Council. The initial meeting on this event was held earlier in the year with the Mayor Zac Miles and other Councillors including Felicity McCaffrey from ‘Clifton’ heritage home. Many great suggestions were made with proposed action plans for the competition. As Australia’s ‘First Garden Suburb’ it is appropriate that such a competition be held and the Rotary Club is looking forward to working closely with the local residents on this exciting community event. It revives a program initiated and run by the Rotary Club in the 1990s called the ‘Rotary Townscape Awards’. One year, it was won by Lang Walker and his large magnificent garden at ‘Milthorpe’ in Hunters Hill. There are five different categories in the competition and entry will be FREE. This year all funds raised from the event will be directed to the upkeep of the ‘Hillman Orchard’, found at the rear of the National Trust listed Vienna Cottage. Registration opens on July 1st with judging to take place in September. How Rotary supports the community By Charles Amos LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 No rest for our railway repairers Dear Sir, There was no long weekend lounging (earlier this month) for the small army of rail workers as they invaded Denistone station and busily upgraded many of its facilities. Improved access for wheelchairs, prams and bikes, a new toilet for platform 1-2, resurfacing platforms, re-tiling and repainting waiting rooms, reprofiling steps and installing solar power for new lifts were just some of their good works. None of this would’ve been done if our rail systems were privatised like in declining USA, where big business profit trumps all, resulting in such essential infrastructure falling into dangerous disrepair, as two big derailments in Ohio this year showed. RICHARD POWER Denistone NDIS rorts Dear Sir, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rorts and over-servicing have cost the good ol’ Australian taxpayer a massive $74 billion over the past 10 years, as revealed by the NDIS Minister, Bill Shorten on ABC’s Q&A recently. So as we all are told by the RBA to stop spending, this Federal Government program is now seen by some NDIS Operators as a licence to print money as they overcharge for basic services to the disabled members of society. One Australian family on the Q&A show with two autistic kids with ADHD were told by NDIS their family wasn’t ”disabled enough” to qualify for any government support. It seems that NDIS has just discovered it has a budget problem, but rather than crack down on all the rorts and overservicing, it is now culling genuine families from the NDIS program to save dollars. If ever we needed another Royal Commission, it is now, to reign in the out-of-control NDIS, before the country goes broke. CHRISTOPHER PIKE Ryde Deputy Mayor spits dummy on criticism Her outburst during Monday night’s meeting followed revelations the council could run a deficit of around eight million dollars over the next decade. Hunters Hill Trust spokesman Dr Alister Sharp told the meeting that unless the council balanced its budget it would be forcibly amalgamated with Hunter’s Hill Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Krassoi has lashed out at critics of the council. ☐ Hunter’s Hill Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Krassoi a neighbouring council and he reiterated the Trust’s opposition to council supporting non-essential development projects. Of particular concern is council spending more than a million dollars on the sports building in Boronia Park. Around 41 percent of the municipality is non-rateable and includes schools and bushland areas used by the broader community with no return to council, which must also bear the brunt of state government cost shifting as well as an increase in the cost of works. But the Deputy Mayor said she’s sick of people criticising the General Manager, councillors and staff because roads and parks are in the best condition they’ve been in for the last 20 years and the council communicates well with a supportive local community. “I just can’t abide this criticism anymore,’’ she said. Hunters Hill Planning Panel knocks back Montefiore Gateway application In a decision on Thursday, the Panel ruled that “adequate time for assessment of the Proposal by the Local Planning Panel is needed” and “there is a need for contextual understanding of the impacts of similar aged care sites within the Municipality.” The decision recommended a conservation plan to assess the whole site - which includes the heritage garden and synagogue - and it should be prepared by an independent heritage expert. “The Panel also recommends wider community consultation prior to Gateway Determination including providing information on the process of a Planning Proposal and Gateway Determination,’’ it said. Hunter’s Hill councillors on Monday night voted to adopt a recommendation from senior staff to defer any decision to support or oppose sending the proposal for Gateway Determination until further assessment by council staff is carried out. Montefiore had sought Panel support which would require the Local Environ- ment Plan to be amended to allow it to build two six storey independent living apartment blocks at the centre of the site and four storey apartment blocks on its perimeter. Community speakers at Monday night’s council meeting opposed the so called “three hundred million dollar” Montefiore Hunter’s Hill’s Local Planning Panel has recommended against sending Boro- nia Park’s Montefiore Aged Care planning proposal for Gateway Determina- tion until further investigations are carried out. proposal and there was speculation Montefiore (Hunters Hill) wants to become a property developer of premium apartments for ‘top end’ buyers. Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association President Bob Hayes spoke at the council meeting and at the planning panel hearing. “To say that the Montefiore Rezoning Planning Proposal and redevelopment proposals will impact the character, integrity, amenity and identity of established neighbourhoods in Hunters Hill is a significant understatement,’’ he said. “These proposals are in direct contravention of the fundamental principles, aims and objectives of the current existing Local Environment Plans and likely future Local Environment Plans.” He said approval to extend local building height levels from two storeys to six to suit Montefiore would set a dangerous precedent. “The Planning Proposal certainly fails in its claim that it is retaining and reinforcing the local character of existing low-density housing within the adjacent urban area,” he said. A report to councillors by senior Hunter’s Hill staff says Montefiore has responded to community concerns. “The development, as envisioned through the Planning Proposal, master- plan and site-specific Development Control Plan, seeks to respond to, and remain consistent with the unique qualities of the site and the Hunters Hill Local Government Area including local character and heritage,” it says. It only made a passing reference to possible developer contributions. “The proponent has indicated that they are open to negotiating with Council with regard to public benefits through a Voluntary Planning Agreement however, to date no such offer or negotiations have taken place.’’ Mayor Zac Miles said on Monday night: “A V.P.A is not just a good idea, it is absolutely necessary.” Another ICAC FAIL after watchdog’s elephant pace exacerbates “public political lynching” Ms Berejiklian unwittingly assumed a starring role when public hearings, which commenced in September 2020, revealed she had a “close personal relationship” with Mr Maguire. The report will be handed down tomorrow (Thursday, June 29) and while its focus will largely be on Mr Maguire, what it says about Ms Berejiklian will determine whether her nightmare continues. Despite the protracted ICAC smear, Ms Berejiklian remains popular within the community and has moved on to a corporate role with Macquarie Park-based telco Optus since stepping down as Premier in 2021, after repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, including in response to ICAC announcing she was being investigated at the height of the state’s COVID restrictions in 2021. Now at long last, Liberal Party powerbroker, Hornsby MP and long-time Berejiklian ally Matt Kean has spoken up, calling for ICAC’s investigations to be kept secret until final findings are ready to be made public. It’s a shame Mr Kean didn’t lead the charge for reform, including the introduction of an exoneration protocol, while he was at the height of his power as the state’s Treasurer. “The unacceptable, unexplained and repeated delays delivering this report may have been forgiven if they didn’t come after a public political lynching that effectively ended Ms Berejiklian’s premiership,” Mr Kean said. “If ICAC can’t manage an effective process, reform is needed to limit the integrity body to making only final findings public.” Mr Kean’s comments – echoed privately by many within his party and among many other politicians of different political persuasion - came ahead of the release of the Operation Keppel findings which are expected to generate a media feeding frenzy. Reform could yet be on the cards, with the premier, Chris Minns, insisting he was “prepared to sit down and talk” with anyone who had a reasonable proposal to reform the body, including what ICAC itself wants. “I want to see what the ICAC report says,” he said on Monday. “In addition to any findings they make about THE NSW ICAC has a hell of a lot to answer for - its latest failure being the unfathomable delay in handing down its report on Operation Keppel, which has already taken out popular NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian with its probe into former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire. ☐ Former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire individuals, they’ll make recommendations to government about changes. It’s important that we’re able to look at that independently and assess it on its merits. “Any agency that’s responsible for investigating public officials or members of the public has to deliver findings in as short space of time as possible.” Commissioner, Ruth McColl, was expected to hand down the report last year, but was twice delayed before announcing last week that it would be given to the parliament’s presiding officers on Thursday. The body has blamed “complex matters of law and fact” and the quantity of evidence pulled as part of the investigation for the delays that have drawn criticism from across the political spectrum, but especially from Liberals. Earlier this month, Maguire was charged with giving false and misleading evidence in relation to a separate corruption watchdog inquiry called Operation Dasha involving Canterbury council. ☐ Former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian
6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 28 June, 2023 Ryde abolishes library fines Going fine free will kick off with a threemonth amnesty running between July and September when members who return overdue items will have their fines waived. All members who return their overdue items during the amnesty period will receive a free, welcome back to the library pack, with a special library lovers tote bag, a new replacement library card, a City of Ryde Libraries have abolished overdue book fines. library card holder and bookmarks. However borrowing privileges will still be suspended until items are returned. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said the fine free scheme had already proven a hit at other libraries throughout Australia and was a welcome new policy in Ryde. “The core mission of our libraries is to strengthen and support the community, particularly in tough economic times,” he said. “Research has shown that financial penalties disproportionately impact those least able to afford it in our communities who depend on access to library services, so by removing overdue fines we are lifting any financial barriers and encouraging returns of current overdue items, opening access to the full range of free services available across the libraries.” For more details, go to: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/finefree ☐ City of Ryde libraries have books in community languages. Killer sentenced to 27 years jail Cecilia’s former partner Mario Marcelo Santoro (40) was convicted of strangling her in an attempt to “shut The Brazilian man found guilty of killing thirty eight year old Ryde businesswoman Cecilia Haddad in April, 2018 was sentenced to 27 yeas in jail by a Rio De Janeiro court on Friday. ☐ Cecilia Haddad is pictured on the waterfront in Meadowbank. ☐ Convicted killer Mario Marcelo Santoro. her up” after he broke into her Ryde apartment and an argument broke out. He then dumped her body in the Lane Cove River before he fled to Brazil days later. Santoro had previously refused to testify but broke down in tears when he confessed to the murder last week and begged her family for forgiveness. “She fell limp in my arms, I don’t remember if she hit her head on the floor, but I picked her up, desperate and put her on the sofa and she wouldn’t wake up,” he said. In handing down the maximum sentence, Judge Legay Vermelho said Santoro had been uncooperative. “The defendant only confessed in the jury room, after extensive evidentiary material had been produced against him,” he said. “He did not confess before the Australian police when he arrived in Brazil, he did not confess before the Brazilian investigators nor before the judicial stages he had gone through up to that day.” Prosecutor Fernando Aguiar told the trial there was “a very large amount of evidence” against Santoro and “the result was what we expected”. Santoro’s lawyer Rubem Vianna said they intend to appeal the sentence and argue that he did not plan to kill Cecilia. Accompanied by a priest in court, Santoro also begged the Haddad family to forgive him but Cecila’s mother Maria Lucia Muller was distraught and brother Joao Haddad said their “five-year battle” for justice had finally arrived. Mrs Muller later spoke with reporters. “Justice has been done in Brazil’s standard, of course, because if it were for me it would be death penalty but we don’t have this here so we got the maximum that we could,” she said. Santoro was convicted of aggravated homicide, asphyxiation, femicide and concealment of a body. The charge of femicide was recently introduced in Brazil in response to a high rate of domestic violence killings. New South Wales’ detectives had evidence Santoro’s phone had been traced to Cecilia’s Ryde apartment around the time of the murder and his shoes had been found at the end of Angelo Street in Woolwich, where he may have made an attempt to dispose of her body in the harbour. Cecilia’s friends also gave evidence that Santoro had been stalking her and she feared for her life after she had decided to end her relationship with him amid claims he was unemployed and financially dependent on her income as a mining industry executive. Mrs Muller also recalled a final phone call with her daughter when Santoro could be heard banging on her front door. In Ryde in 2018, a murder investigation was launched within days of her disappearance after her red Fiat was found at West Ryde railway station and after detectives were told she had missed several appointments. She was last seen at a barbecue with friends a few days before her body was found in the Lane Cove River on April 29 by a group of kayakers and it had been weighed down by gym weights placed in the pockets of her khaki cargo pants. Cecilia had been in a relationship with Santoro before she relocated to Australia ten years ago. It was alleged Santoro fled Sydney to avoid extradition as Brazil is reluctant to hand over its citizens to face trial overseas. Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. EXERCISE BIKE – York brand, 1yr old, stationary. Balmain legend Paul Sironen is involved with the Tigers’ Pathways Development Program for older students. The Tigers are active across the Inner West and have a top Under 14 Tag Team representing the Balmain District. Brooks, the 2018 Dally M halfback of the year, was on a deal believed to be worth $1.15m this year at the Tigers but his new deal at Manly could reportedly span fouryears and be worth around $2.8m. Manly also re- vealed it had snaf- fled the Tigers’ Tommy Talau on a two-year deal and retained centre Tolu Koula until the TIGERS STAR Luke Brooks has signed a shock four-year deal with the Silvertails - Manly Sea Eagles. ☐ Local tigers star of more than a decade, Luke Brooks. Koula is a future Silvertails star, with Paulo and Talau to add speed and size. The combined signings of Brooks, Koula, Paulo and Talau are worth a cool $6m. After 11 seasons with the Tigers, Brooks, 28, elected against re-signing at Concord, despite being offered a handsome new contract. Seibold revealed why he signed Brooks. “Luke is a quality player and we want to add quality players to our roster to create competition for spots,” he said. “He has played 200 games and you don’t do that in the NRL unless you’re a good player. “We think having role models like ‘Chez’ (Cherry-Evans) and Tommy and Jake Trbojevic around him will help his game.” Brooks had previously been linked to Canterbury, St George Illawarra and North Queensland.

Yianni Nicolaou scored for APIA in the 53rd minute in a high intensity match with both sides committed to attack. APIA coach Franco Parisi said his side’s swashbuckling performance deserved more than one goal. “The way we came out in the second half probably deserved a few more but it was good to see out the win at the end and I’m very happy,” he said. “And three points and a clean sheet is what we wanted.” Local Premier League football clubs APIA Leichhardt and North West Sydney Spirit both won their home games on Saturday. North West Sydney Spirit defeated an improv- ing Mt Druitt Rangers by three goals to one with the home side’s Ollie Wiggin scoring in the 11th minute followed by goals to Luiz Lobo in the 42nd minute and Musashi Kokubo in the 50th minute. Will Harvey pulled one back for Mt Druitt in the 59th minute. Spirit coach David Perkovic said the early goal set the pattern of play. “I thought we were really dominant in the first half, obviously it was really good to get in front early to settle the nerves and it changed the way the game played,’’ he said. “We were good enough to get the three goals today, disappointing we conceded the goal but in the context of the season it’s a very important victory.” APIA are alone at the top of the table on 44 points with North West Sydney Spirit in 10th place on 28 points. Gladesville’s Lyon roars for Aussies Despite being dropped by England skipper Ben Stokes, one of the world’s best fielders, Gladesville’s Nathan Lyon helped the Aussies to one of the best Ashes victories of all time thanks to his great efforts to hang on as a tail end batsman - and also deliver with the ball - in the first Test at Edgbaston. Recognised as one of the world’s very best off spinners, the Test veteran had match figures of 8-229 - four wickets in each innings - and with the bat scored a priceless 16 not out in a ninth wicket unbroken partnership of 59 in the second innings with Test captain Ben Cummins, 44 not out, to record a magnificent Aussie win by two wickets. The last day of play proved an incredibly intense time for the players and viewers worldwide with the Test swaying both ways with the result in doubt until late in the game. The pair demonstrated great character and fortitude in a Test match that will long be remembered down the ages for the Test that had everything. Known as the GOAT (greatest of all time), Nathan is now a Gladesville hero along with his skipper Ben Cummins who hails from the Blue Mountains. To Nathan, Ben and the whole Aussie team .....we salute you. - by Howard Rich Bridge celebration: Thousands of fans celebrate countdown to FIFA Women’s World Cup Amidst the sparkling backdrop of the Sydney Harbour, 4,000 fans kicked-off festivities on the Harbour Bridge and took part in this once in a lifetime ‘Unity Celebration’. Eager to celebrate the tournament and the talented players who will represent the very best of women’s football, fans gathered on the world-renowned landmark to hear a preview of the tournament’s official song, dance to the tournament’s ‘Unity Beat’, and view live cultural performances and presentations. The Unity Jersey design reflects the vibrant local landscapes and rich colours of the two host countries, building a palette based on the rainforests, earth, mountains, cities, and water. “Today’s very significant,” the first captain of an Australian women’s national team, Julie Dolan, said. “It’s a massive event and as a pioneer I think maybe a lot of us would have thought there would be a world cup, but none of us dreamed of anything on this scale. “This is the biggest women’s sporting event in the world. I imagine not only for me, but for all players it was very emotional, just to see how far we’ve come.” Head of FIFA Women’s World Cup, Rhiannon Martin said it would be a massive event. “It’s going to be a great celebration, not just of football – of course, we’re kicking off in 25 days – but also bringing the community together,” she said. CEO of Football Australia, James Johnson said the “tournament will be the biggest tournament that Australia has seen. The biggest sporting event since Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games so today is a big milestone.” The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on July 20.
