Ryde’s Armenian sister city saved,
But in a ‘shameful’ ceasefire deal

man Empire,” Rita Lepedjian said.
Armenians woke to the news last Tuesday that Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Russia and Turkey had brokered a ceasefire Significantly, the ceasefire does not enforce Azerbaijan›s
deal that left around 25 per cent of territory near the border - claim to the whole of the Republic of Artsakh which it refers

It has also forced hundreds of Artsakh’s Armenians to flee
their homes with many burning them to the ground rather
than have them taken over by the Azeris.
Many historic Armenian churches and cultural sites - par-
ticularly in the city of Sushi - recently fell to Azerbaijan but
a feared Azeri advance into Stepanakert has been avoided
with the arrival of a Russian peacekeeping force.
The ceasefire is being hailed as a victory in Turkey and
Azerbaijan which are incorrectly referring to the ceasefire as
an Armenian surrender.
“This is our ancient homeland, we will never surrender it,
we will be back when the Azeris are gone,” one local Arme-
nian family said.
Others argue that despite the brave and capable fight put
up by Artsakh’s forces the ceasefire has saved Stepanakert
from continued bombardment by the Turkish backed Azeri
army and will allow emergency workers to prioritise the fight
against the coronavirus pandemic
Ryde documentary filmmaker Rita Lepedjian paid
tribute to the Armenians of Artsakh who fought against
overwhelming odds.
“We can only hope that the anguish of the families of these
fallen heroes is tempered by the knowledge that their loved
ones died for a noble cause, protecting so many from a brutal
enemy, harm and intimidation,” she said.
“We as a nation, bow down to our servicemen and women
this day and everyday and they have our respect, our hon-
our, our love and our thanks.”
The City of Ryde›s Armenian speaking Clr Sarkis Ye-
delian OAM told The Weekly Times he believes Russia
is a clear winner from the ceasefire because it reasserts
Russian strategic influence over an area once part of the
Soviet Union.
Other Armenians are furious that Turkey was a party to the
ceasefire talks which they say rewards Turkish aggression.
“Turkey’s high visibility role in the conflict and its support
to Azerbaijan has been perceived by Armenians all over the
