Cat of theWeek The cat in the window “If you drive along Victoria Road you may have seen a cat sitting high up in a large window, that’s little torti Tilly,” Jonine from the World League said. “She loves to climb, so you will need a secure home for her so she does not become one of the many cats heartbreakingly lost and killed each year, which often happens because their home was not properly secured.” Tilly is almost two years old and likes affection but doesn’t like being picked up and carried. “A sweet little thing Tilly is happy to be an only cat or to mix with others,’’ Jonine said. She is desexed, microchipped vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed. For more information or an appointment please phone the World League on 9817 4892. The recent cold snap could be responsible for an increase in sightings of Funnel Web and Huntsman spiders in homes across northern Sydney, experts say. Funnel Web sightings are being reported in bushland suburbs that include Epping, Hornsby and Chatswood with twelve Funnel Webs — five males, five females, and two juveniles — recently caught by members of the public and dropped off in jars at Hawkesbury City Council. The Australian Reptile Park’s operations manager Billy Collett said the spiders are unusually active for May but suspects the recent cold snap had driven them out of their burrows. Funnel Web spiders are almost always seen on the ground and prefer to hide in warm, dark and secluded areas. “They don’t jump like a lot of people think,” Mr Collett said. Funnel-web spiders typically attack as a last resort when threatened as it takes them days or weeks to replenish the venom they need for hunting and pest control experts believe that - due to their proximity to Lane Cove National Park - homes in Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove are prone to a diversity of spider invasions, including Redbacks, White Tails; and Mouse, Wolf Spiders and Orb spiders. Most commonly sighted are Huntsman spiders which are not naturally aggressive to humans. The event will be an opportunity to peruse a number of stalls that will be selling vintage items, homewares, art, antiques, bric-a-brac and up-cycled clothing and is a great opportunity to help build on our local circular economy. It’s happening at Town Hall on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 May, from 10am to 4pm. For more information contact Heather Kitson on 0422 273 250 or [email protected] Recycle your textiles Waste management and recycling is a core focus for our Council and is something we will continue to work on improving for our local environment and community. Council is committed to delivering services to help residents safely and sustainably dispose of their waste to reduce our footprint. As part of our efforts to enhance sustainability in Hunters Hill, we conducted Textiles in Kerbside Waste Audit to get a better understanding of the amount and types of textile waste in Hunters Hill and potential options to divert items from landfill. The audit identified that across the Hunters Hill local government area, an estimated 87 tonnes of textiles waste, including wearable clothing, carpet, linens and towels, is generated each year. Following the recommendations from the audit, Council is exploring opportunities to increase textile recycling and resource recovery of textile items. As part of this project, we are holding a free textiles drop-off day on 27 May, from 10am to 3pm in the car park at Clarkes Point. Our Council will be partnering with Vinnies and textile recovery business BlockTexx for this event. BlockTexx will collect unwanted clean household linen, including sheets, towels, pillowcases and covers to be remanufactured into recycled raw materials that can be used to create new products. Vinnies will collect wearable clothing, bags and footwear for sale in the charity’s op shops. For more information on what will be accepted, see our website and social media or else feel free to contact council at (02) 9879 9400. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill New life will be given to old treasures at the Hunters Hill Vintage, Antique and Homewares Fair, coming to Hunters Hill Town Hall on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th May. I’ve been involved in the work of the Salvation Army here in Ryde and Hunters Hill for 25 years, and the generosity of our local community never ceases to amaze me. Year after year, individuals, families, businesses, local government and community groups get behind The Red Shield Appeal because they believe in giving back and creating strong and healthy communities. While all Australians are feeling the pinch of the cost of living pressures, it’s more extreme for some. The Salvos are seeing more and more people living below the breadline – skipping meals, going without prescribed medications, struggling to keep the lights on. For those who were barely scraping by previously, the risk of falling into poverty is real. We don’t want anybody to struggle alone – times are tough, but we can get through it together, with your support. Together we can provide hope and compassion for our neighbours who have nowhere to turn. In our area The Salvos are aiming to raise $100,000 during the Red Shield Appeal this year to support community members doing it tough. There are a number of ways community members and volunteers can get involved – community collection points, door knocking, online fundraising, or organising a collection at your workplace, school or sporting event. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the time. Grab your friends, your workmates, or make it a family outing or a group activity for your club – just get involved. The community needs your support more than ever The Red Shield Appeal weekend is set for May 20 and 21, however there are a number of volunteer opportunities available throughout May – any time you can give is appreciated. Our community is known for being generous and supportive and I know this year will be no different. Now in its 59th year, the annual Red Shield Appeal funds vital community programs, including financial assistance, homelessness, family and domestic violence, and drug and alcohol services. Each year, through The Salvation Army’s nationwide network of services, the Salvos provide: Assistance to one person every 17 seconds More than 1.86 million sessions of care to people in need Over 1 million bed nights to those in need of accommodation More than 1.52 million meals to people who accessed our homelessness services To volunteer for The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal [email protected] To donate to the Salvation Army https://www.digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au/o/r-salvos Thankyou so much for your generous support of the community through the work of the Salvation Army Amanda Whittaker is the Team Leader for the Salvos in Ryde and Hunters Hill. Hunters Hill Guest Column Please help the Red Shield Appeal The Salvation Army in Ryde and Hunters Hill area is urging the community to get involved in this year’s Red Shield Appeal, with funds raised locally staying local to support community services and programs in the area. To The POINT By Amanda Whittaker LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Minns’ decision admirable Dear Sir, I am writing in reply to a letter published in your last edition (May 10 - ‘Opera House snub won’t be forgotten’). The decision by Chris Minns to not honour the coronation of King Charles on the Opera House was an admirable one. I’m a young First Nations woman. The concept of an “imperial family” reflects the idea of the British monarchy as empire’s figurehead, vested in ideologies of white supremacy and colonialism. It is the same representation of colonialism that I see embedded in our local electorate’s January 26th celebrations. It upset me to see Australia Day propaganda up and down this electorate’s main roads. And it would upset me to see a symbol of colonisation on the Opera House. Empathy is important here - you must consider how this would make Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples feel. BRONTE CHARLES Gladesville Forgotten Middle Australians Dear Sir, To all the Forgotten Middle Australians forgotten in the May Federal Budget, did anyone see the great Budget Reply by the Federal Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton. One issue he spoke about was the need for us to invest in Nuclear Energy, afterall, we are now going to have Nuclear-powered subs in and around Sydney, so why not a small modular Nuclear Powered Plant in Ryde? What about on the old Ryde Civic Centre site? There is a big hole there just going to waste. We could put it deep below Lane Cove Road and still have plenty of room for Ryde Council on top of it. The councillors could also serve us as USGs (Uranium Safety Guardians) as well as their usual council roles. Think about it, if there were issues (leaks?) they would be in the best possible position to keep us up to date with any evacuation protocols. Surplus council PPE and hand gel are still available from COVID stockpiles and this would be way to ensure that these resources did not go to waste. Finally, I am sick of paying rising electricity bills and this would dramatically reduce them and keep it clean enough for the ALP and The Greens. CHRISTOPHER PIKE Ryde
Wednesday 17 May, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Mayor defends demolition of Figtree Park cottage He also hit back at his opponents’ calls to make the tender process for the redeveloped Figtree Park at the Hunters Hill Village “open and transparent” and said it would be illegal to publish In Commercial Confidence tender documents. In August 2020 the Council received a $4.7 million dollar grant from the previous state Liberal government to redevelop the park which prompted the Defenders Of Figtree Park residents’ action group to condemn the grant as an extravagant waste of ratepayers’ money on a project that doesn’t have community support. The Defenders of Figtree Park are now outraged the cottage at 48 Gladesville Road - valued on the property market at more than $2 million - is to be bulldozed for what they describe as “a grand entrance” to the adjoining park. “At a time when the shortage of decent rental property is maybe our most urgent social problem, one of Sydney’s richest municipalities wants to knock down a house that could be home to a whole family,” Defenders of Figtree Park spokesman David Salter said. “We might understand if the land was needed for essential infrastructure but that’s not the case, it makes no sense.” Mr Salter recently wrote to the new state government asking it to intervene. But Mayor Miles rejected the criticism, telling The Weekly Times the cottage needed to be demolished to create ‘flat land’ access to the park from adjoining Gladesville Road for disabled users and mothers with prams. He said Council could restore the run-down cottage and be a greedy landlord but he preferred to create a safe, inviting and landmark gateway. “We want to make it look like a park you would be proud of in Hunters Hill, a park that is going to be lit properly, maintained beautifully and able to be accessed by everyone in Hunters Hill.” He said it is also important to ensure council and emergency services have access. Figtree Park is Crown Land and while the Local Independent Planning Panel has twice rejected the Council’s submission to remove around 40 trees, Council could start work on the park’s playground, amenities block, gardens and landscaping later this year with no development application required for the proposed works under state law and council rules. The project is to be undertaken by General Manager Mitchell Murphy and his team and although the Mayor said that while it could be delayed by the procurement of building materials, he expects the full $4.7 million to be spent on the park with little change remaining. During a recent Council debate, former Mayor and independent Clr Ross Williams accused the Council of operating in secrecy. But Mayor Miles said councillors had been “briefed” about the Figtree Park tender process but Council wouldn’t publish confidential tender documents. “You tell me the Council that publishes Commercial In Confidence tenders, it would breach the Local Government Act and would be illegal,’’ he said. HUNTERS HILL Mayor Zac Miles (Lib) has hit back at criticism of his support for a proposal to knock down a vacant Council owned cottage to build a gateway to a redeveloped park at a time when families are struggling to find affordable housing. New Chinese students kidnap scam The virtual kidnapping scam that involved Macquarie University students was revealed by The Weekly Times in 2020 - but stopped during the lockdowns - but now police have confirmed four cases this month with more than $750,000 ransom demanded from the victims’ families in China. The students ages range from 17 to 23 and include male and female victims who are contacted by scammers posing as Chinese officials who order them to send fake photographs of their kidnapping or face arrest or deportation for crimes they haven’t committed. The pictures are then sent to students’ families and are used to demand a $280,000 ransom for their safe release. Some victims have been hospitalised because of the trauma they endured. It is not only wealthy students being targeted, Chinese Embassy police liaison officer Zhang Zhengping said. “It does not discriminate. It happens across all ages, genders and all socio-economic levels,” Mr Zhengping said. He said Chinese and Australian police are cooperating to crack down on the scammers. China’s Sydney Consulate has also assured students that no official or law enforcement officer would contact a student and demand money from them or their families “The victims not only suffered high financial losses but also huge psychological stress,” Vice-consul for the Chinese Consulate General Xiaoteng Li said. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi said the scammers also threaten to harm the students’ families. “They absolutely convince them and psychologically trick them into believing their families will be harmed if they don’t comply with their Virtual kidnapping scams that target Chinese students have resumed, Consulate officials and police confirmed this week. ☐ One of the fake kidnapping photographs. requests,” Detective Superintendent Doueihi said. “Families in China legitimately believe that their loved ones are in danger and have been kidnapped and on occasions have paid large sums of ransom to these people.” Police said the return of the scam coincides with the return of students after the lockdowns. “International students are now travelling again and they’re coming into the country,” Detective Superintendent Doueihi said. “We saw a number of these scam offences in 2020 however, due to a significant media campaign and the reduction of the number of Chinese students coming to Australia because of COVID we haven’t seen any offences for the past two years.” Police urge victims to contact authorities. Treasurer treks to TWT Territory, starts campaign to sell 2023-24 budget in Dundas FEDERAL TREASURER Jim Chalmers chose a garage in Dundas on Monday to kick off his five-city roadshow to sell the 2023-34 federal budget. Mr Chalmers was spruiking his budget measure aimed at tackling cost of living pressures faced by Australians by providing $1 billion in low-interest loans to help them install solar panels, switch to electric hot-water systems and make their homes more energy efficient. The Treasurer was talking up his just-delivered 2023-24 budget at the home of Dundas resident ‘Matt’, who was keen to show Mr Chalmers, Reid MP Sally Sitou, Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen. “I’m really pleased to be here in Dundas to talk about it because $1.3 billion invested in household energy efficiency, whether it is loans via the CEFC or help for social housing, means that more people can access these quite remarkable opportunities that come from renewable energy and energy saving and energy storing devices,” Mr Chalmers said. “And that is a big part of what the Budget was all about. I’m really proud to be working with Chris Bowen, on a broad suite of measures, which are all about taking some of the edge off these energy price pressures that people are feeling here, and right around the country. “This is a crucial part of our efforts in Tuesday night’s Budget to provide cost-of-living relief in middle Australia, at the same time as we invest in the future.” Households will be able to access $1 billion in low-interest loans to help them install solar panels, switch to electric hot-water systems and make their homes more energy efficient. “Here in Bennelong, climate change, cost of living and electrification were major issues,” Mr Laxale said. “It’s great to be part of a government that takes all those three things seriously. “And the great thing about what Matthew’s done to his home is that we’re making it easier for more and more Australians to do it.” While successive federal governments have focused on cutting carbon emissions from energy providers, the new government program is aiming to embrace what technologist and Rewiring Australia founder Saul Griffith has called the “household electrification revolution”. “This really is an historic moment. Australian small businesses are a critical national energy infrastructure,” Mr Griffith said. ““By providing financing we are helping every Australian household go on the electrification journey. Matt just took us on a little trip in his garage, where he showed us that so far this year, he’s already saved $1,000 through putting solar on his house and battery in his basement. “And Matt’s just beginning his electrification journey, he’s thinking about electrifying the kitchen, electrifying the water heater, and [inaudible] even more thousands of dollars of savings a year. The $1.3 billion Household Upgrades Fund will include $1 billion in cheap loans to help households install solar panels, getting rid of gas hot-water system and stove-tops, double-glaze their windows and undertake other energy efficiency measures. The loans will be controlled by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, in collaboration with private lenders. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. A further $300 million will be committed to support upgrades to social housing which will be co-funded and co-designed with the states and territories. Another $300 million will be allocated to the Small Business Energy Incentive to help companies with a turnover of less than $50 million become eligible for an extra 20 per cent deduction on energy-efficient items such as solar panels. The $1.6 billion package in the budget comes on top of the $3 billion in energy bill relief announced by the Albanese government and co-funded by the states and territories which will deliver a $500 rebate to 5 million low-income households and $650 for eligible small businesses. Energy Minister Chris Bowen said making households more energy smart would help reduce power bills. He said Australian homes were largely energy inefficient, with Australia ranking 58th out of 63 countries on energy use per capita. “Upgrading an average house from a 1-star rating to a 3-star rating can cut a household’s energy bill by around 30 per cent,” he said.
6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 May, 2023 City of Ryde pays tribute to its volunteer workers Greg has been a member of NSW State Emergency Service for 11 years and has assisted people in peril all throughout the state and beyond. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said this outstanding volunteer directs SES crews volunteers to respond to calls for assistance from residents who have been impacted by flood and storm emergencies. “It’s a 24/7 role, with Greg and his volunteer teams often working in terrible conditions, with people under significant stress in high-risk environments,” Mayor Yedelian OAM said. He recently represented Ryde during flood events in regional NSW and attended significant emergency events in Pittwater and Western Sydney as well as to storm-impacted homes on the Northern Beaches. “In the unfortunate event that disaster ever strikes, you know you are in safe and dedicated hands with Greg Power,” the Mayor said. The Awards ceremony was held at Marsfield’s Curzon Hall on Thursday night to celebrate National Volunteers Week. The Young Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Macquarie University student Royce Zeng. Royce is President of the Actuarial Students’ Society and volunteers to help other students and raises money for charity as well as serving as a volunteer bush firefighter with the NSW Rural Fire Service, based at Hornsby Heights. “Royce believes that no matter where you are, you will always be able to make an impact and he goes out of his way to volunteer because of a genuine passion for helping people,” the Mayor said. The Group Volunteer of the Year award was presented to the CCA NSW Community Learning Tutors group. The tutors come from diverse backgrounds and include professional musicians, artists, photographers, an Australian Music Examinations Board examiner, a dance company director, a physiotherapist and registered coaches. They give more than 3,600 volunteer hours of time each year so 300 students can access 80 different classes, learning new skills or improving existing ones in disciplines like Tai Chi, cooking, musical instruments, singing, dancing, photography, art, and more. “The volunteer tutors are role models of lifelong learning, and they also recognise the importance of learning from each other,” the Mayor said. He said the high number of entrants once again proved that Ryde was a City of kind, selfless, and generous people. “What unites all of our nominees is the desire to help others, to freely give of their time, their resources, and their labour, while asking for nothing in return,” he said. “We marvelled at each and every one of our nominees. They have made their families, their loved ones and most importantly – their community – proud.” State Emergency Services Ryde Unit team leader Greg Power has been recognised as the City of Ryde’s 2023 Individual Volunteer of the Year. ☐ Above left, Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM and City of Ryde CEO Wayne Rylands with Volunteer Awards winners for Group Volunteer of the Year (CCA NSW Community Learning Volunteer Tutors); Young Volunteer of the Year (Royce Zeng); and Individual Volunteer of the Year (Greg Power). John Manenti is a tireless worker for the Granny Smith Festival and raises funds for Ryde Hospital. Lindsay Mar has spent many years working for the City of Ryde Eisteddfod, community radio station 2RRR, Neighbourhood Watch, the West Ryde Easter Fair, and the Granny Smith Festival. Margery East has been a member and volunteer of CWA Eastwood-Epping for about 15 years and has also volunteered with Meals on Wheels twice a week for more than three years. Pamela Wood has served as a member of the Rotary Club of North Ryde for more than eight years and has served as President and Secretary. Rolf Schafer has been a volunteer for St John Ambulance NSW for 40 years, transferring to the Ryde Division in 2001. Samantha Profilio is part of the St Charles Primary School community and serves as Secretary of the school’s P&F committee and supports other community fundraising events. Sunja Yoon makes lunch for the elderly Koreans who attend the CASS Ryde Community Services Centre every Friday. Werner Klarenaar is a volunteer for City of Ryde Bushcare, working for an average of four hours a day at Brush Farm Park. Yeghia Gharibian has volunteered for the Armenian Youth Federation for the past eight years as both a member and a leader. A son remembers his dad’s heroism Terry Ryan’s father Sergeant Ron Ryan served in New Guinea and New Britain with the 36th Battalion, which came to be nicknamed Ike’s Marines. In 1943 he saved the life of surviving veteran - 100 year old Col Moir of Five Dock - when Mr Moir and another soldier attempted to cross a river in a gorge during the New Guinea campaign. “They were wading across the river and were being swept away when dad took off his pack and dived in to save the two men,’’ Mr Ryan said. He said his father ”could have been an Olympian” and showed exceptional talent across sporting and leisure pursuits including rugby, boxing ice skating; swimming and diving; shooting; horse riding; and even ballroom dancing. Sergeant Ryan was mentioned in dispatches and was later awarded the Military Medal when he saved the battalion from a Japanese attack of around 100 soldiers in 1945. Terry tells how Sergeant Ryan fired mortars vertically at the Japanese from a distance of 50 yards in pre-dawn darkness and then charged the Japanese with his machine gun. They retreated in disarray and fell back onto their own boobie traps. “It was the last known battle in the jungle against the Japanese during the war,’’ he said. Sergeant Ryan passed away in 1997 and Terry would like to see wreaths laid by the local Council and local schools at every war memorial across the City of Ryde - particularly the Eastwood memorial - in recognition of the serving Australians’ gallantry and in memory of those who lost their lives. “Council and schools need to play a more active role,” he said. City of Ryde CEO Wayne Rylands said the Binary Centre lease agreement can be negotiated and confirmed the council operates under (Covid safe) flexible arrangements which allow staff to work from home or attend the office a few days a week. Mr Rylands revealed there are also staff who now work from home under “common medical practices’’ but did not have figures to hand on the number of staff working from home on a full-time or part time basis. He nonetheless acknowledged Clr Maggio’s point. “It is like Ryde Central where we are looking at less (staffing) space due to our flexCITY OF RYDE is paying a massive rent for empty offices at its upmarket Binary Centre building in North Ryde as absent staff work from home, according to Independent Councillor Roy Maggio. ☐ The City of Ryde has spent millions renting the Binary Centre in North Ryde. ible working arrangements,’’ he said. Liberal Clr Justin Li supported the flexible working arrangements, which are common in local government. “It is quite normal now for people to work from home if we want to retain the best of talent and tonight we have councillors working remotely,’’ he told the meeting. “These are the positive changes coming from the pandemic.’’ His Liberal colleague Clr Trenton Brown agreed. “I’m still working from home and possibly will be forever and there is a ton of benefits that come from that,” Clr Brown said. “This is about what I call Covid Keepers, for example tele-health could have been implemented years ago and we should keep these reforms.’’ Due to the pandemic and Covid safe measures, Ryde ratepayers no longer address council meetings but submit their comments online or in a letter to councillors prior to each meeting. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said “the important thing is productivity’’ and stressed that councillors should give prior notice to the CEO (and technical support staff) if they attend council meetings online. Labor Clr Penny Pedersen said she hopes councillors will nonetheless turn up to project groups and committees - such as the Parramatta River catchment working groups - out of enthusiasm and commitment. “I don’t know why people aren’t turning up and what we can do about it,’’ she said.

It also welcomed the ”much-needed investment in Family Violence Prevention Legal Services and looks forward to continuing to work alongside these services in supporting First Nations women and children to be free from violence.“ “While this funding is welcome, we look forward to the upcoming Federal Government review of the National Legal Assistance Partnership, to be undertaken in the lead up to the 2024 Budget,” National Legal Aid (NLA), representing the eight legal aid commissions across Australia, welcomes the significant Budget commitment to ending violence against women and children and its focus on ending violence against First Nations women and children. Lucille J Lees Accredited Specialist Benefit from our local knowledge and experience NLA Chair Louise Glanville said in response to the budget announcements. “The Review will provide the opportunity to identify additional investment needed in the legal assistance sector and in the systems in which we work. “Increasing demand and service delivery gaps illustrate the need for legal assistance and the role it plays in supporting victim-survivors within family law, child support and other systems.” She said Legal Aid Commissions are part of the broader legal assistance sector, and together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, Community Legal Centres and Family Violence Prevention Legal Services, play a unique role in providing legal assistance services to the community. “Any investment over the past nine years has been shortterm funding for specific programs rather than an investment in core legal assistance services,” she said. “Legal assistance is a critical aspect of supporting people experiencing disadvantage, not only in providing access to justice, but also in helping victim-survivors remain safe. It also supports people to navigate complex systems such as disability, migration, income support and during disasters. “A recent PwC analysis commissioned by NLA identifies that legal aid services are value for money – providing savings to the community of approximately $600 million per annum, with more than half of this in response to domestic and family violence.” Ms Glanville said the NLA was hopeful that the upcoming review identifies the vital work of the legal assistance sector and provides a roadmap for significant investment to help ensure that people experiencing disadvantage are provided with access to justice. National Legal Aid represents the eight state and territory legal aid commissions, which work every day to help people - including the most marginalised in our communities - with their legal problems. We must strive for fairness: NSW Law Society president Speaking at the Law Society’s Opening of the Law Term dinner in February, Cassandra Banks said that 2023 would be “another productive and eventful year” for the society and she “would not be wasting a moment” of the year. Ms Banks began her term as president of the Law Society of NSW after practising law in Coffs Harbour since she was admitted to the Supreme Court in 2010. She said her focus will be on “sharing knowledge and commencing or continuing critical conversations” around a number of important issues. “NSW currently has almost 16,000 children in out-of-home care, and more than 100,00 children assessed at risk of significant harm every year,” she said. “There are close to 500,000 reports made in relation to concerns about children’s welfare each year. “It has been pleasing to see, in recent years, significant attention being drawn to greater early intervention and active efforts to try to keep children living with their families. This is the start. “The court has an incredibly difficult task in balancing risk and vulnerabilities against the risk of harm in removing a child from their family and then the out-ofhome risks that follow.” She said from the perspective of the profession, there were not enough lawyers hanThis year’s president of the Law Society of NSW marked the opening of the 2023 law term by outlining her priorities, including increased protections for vulnerable families and focusing on the health and wellbeing of the profession. dling the legal work necessary to help these children have a better chance at life. Because of this “under-resourced” area, Ms Banks said that children fall through the cracks of the system, which requires “greater ongoing resourcing” moving forward. “Unless there is effective intervention, systematic accountability and improved legislative framework at all stages of the child protection system, including outof-home care and children exiting the system when they are older, these children can either enter or remain in a vicious cycle of poverty, lack of family support, lack of formal education, crime, incarceration, and susceptibility to drugs and risky behaviours,” she explained. “Of the 186 lawyers based in my region, only nine, including me, practise regularly in the children’s care and protection system. “When I left Coffs Harbour to come to Sydney, I had to reallocate 35 matters to other practitioners who already had full case loads.” Ms Banks said she was looking forward to working with regional and remote communities, as well as advocating for increased wellness in the profession and advancing gender equality. “Although the proportion of female private practice principals is increasing, women are still underrepresented in the top levels of the profession,” she said. “Is the glass ceiling still made of more stubborn material? Clearly, there remains a serious disconnect that we must address in recruiting and retaining women in senior leadership roles. “I also want to make it very clear that men are critical in this journey. Without participation from everyone, particularly those who hold senior or leadership roles, we cannot achieve progress.” ☐ NLA chair Louise Glanville

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. The week from the 19th of May to May 28 will see a hive of activity delivered by the State Member Federations with ‘Come and Try’ sessions, coaching and referee courses, speakers, webinars, ‘Women in Football’ panels, football festivals and networking events. This year will also see the return of the national Female Football Week Awards, recognising the impact of community advocates across five award categories - players, coaches, volunteers, referees and ally. More than 400 nominations have been received with State winners to be announced later this month and national winners celebrated in July. With the FIFA Women’s World Cup just 66 days away, clubs around the country are also invited to embrace FIFA’s Unity Beat and show their support for the global showpiece. Clubs who participate will go in the running to win a visit from tournament mascot, Tazuni. The score could have been higher if not for an inspired performance by North West Sydney Spirit goalkeeper Christopher Marques as APIA were ruth- less in attack and dominated possession. APIA top of the NSWPL table with 34 points and the Macquarie Park based North West Sydney Spirit sits in 11th spot on 18 points, boosted by a grinding one nil win against cellar dwellers Western Sydney at Christie Park on Saturday night. The highlight of the St George game was a remarkable goal by Jack Armson who chipped the Dragons’ keeper from the half way line in the eighth minute before scoring APIA’s winner in the 56th minute. St George scored a penalty in extra time. The Spirit’s Richard Darko scored for the Koalas in the 26th minute. Victorious NWS Spirit FC coach David Perkovic described the match as a hard fought encounter. “We suffered but we’ll take the win,” he said. APIA return to Lambert Park this Saturday at 6pm against the tenth placed Wollongong Wolves while the Koalas travel to the bottom placed Northbridge Bulls Academy at 3pm on Saturday for what should be an away win. APIA forward Rory Jordan was thrilled with the clin- ical local derby demolition after a shock four goals to nil defeat to Sydney FC Youth the previous weekend. “It’s a great feeling to come back and we knew that result was not a setback but was a one off,” he said. “We didn’t think we were going to repeat that and all week the message was we are a great team and we have to bounce back.” APIA Leichhardt defeated North West Sydney Spirit by five goals to nil in the local derby on Saturday, May 6 before going on to top the table after beating St George City by two goals to one at Penshurst Park last Saturday. The Rugby Club’s website has welcomed the move which has been made possible by government grants as well as council financing. “No more standing in the freezing cold, supporting the boys and girls, young men and women that are the heart and soul of our clubs,” the website says. “No more windy, uncomfortable grandstand or ancient, dark and dank change rooms, toilets and canteen and no more hosting our opposition in the dust bowl in front of the grandstand.” The new facility will also be used by schools and community groups. Hunters Hill Rugby Club has welcomed Hunter’s Hill Council’s decision to push ahead with works to build the Boronia Park sports and community centre. ☐ No more watching rugby in the rain. Sky Blues can conquer Melbourne City in Friday’s semi-final decider “I think they’ve got the pressure, they’re at home as well,’’ he said. “There’s going to be opportunities for us and If we take them, we’re in with a real shot.” Corica predicts another close encounter after a second-half penalty from Sky Blues forward Adam Le Fondre at Sydney Football Stadium secured the draw. “We’ve been there many times before and it’s always tough going there but it is a one-off game that could go to penalties or extra time,’’ he said. “No-one expects us to beat them but I think we showed we can.” City has not lost at home through 13 regular-season matches and finished 17 points above Sydney FC during the regular season. But Corica’s side is undefeated in seven matches. “We’re happy to go down there, our form is really good away from home,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it, it’s obviously a tough place to go.” The match kicks off at 7.30pm at Melbourne’s AAMI Stadium.
