Father Martin’s Musings JB’s World JIMMY SHAW our former evergreen Greeny would have been celebrating his 98th trip around the universe next Wednesday June 5 which appropriately is the closest weekend to World Environment Day had he not exited the scene a little while ago. Jimmy had been a local institution for many many years renowned as Australia’s best drummer in his heyday and leader of his ShawNuff Big Band. And as a genuine greeny Jimmy had instituted gardens and vegetable beds in local schools and followed up with standing in elections, local, State and Federal, for the Greens Party. He will long be remembered affectionately by all of us at TWT and many more. RIP Jimmy. * * * HAYLEY BROWN Preparing to serve She found that the congregation was silent while waiting for his arrival and then she suddenly whispered to the man next to her: “When does the service begin?” Immediately he said to her with unintended wisdom: “As soon as we all leave the church!” There is something terribly wrong with any organisation that does not equip and prepare people to best serve the needs of the people that come to that organisation. Imagine how ineffective a school would be that did not prepare their students to face the challenges that they will face upon leaving the school. Or how dangerous and ineffective a police academy would be that did not equip their trainees to effectively address the issues when they confront people who break the rules of law and order. Any organisation if it is to be effective needs to constantly be aware of the challenges before them and then how best to face those challenges. This needs to be a work in progress. One of the great writers and teachers of the church was Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) and she summed up the above reality so well in these words: “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot, together we can do great things.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney Recently I was told of a woman who was visiting a church for the first time and when she arrived, she found out that the priest leading the service was delayed in arriving. The winners - who will be contacted by Hunters Hill Theatre - are: Tiffany Wong of Carlingford; Robyn Piper of Putney; Natai Hanouka of Chatswood; Sandra Bentley of Abbotsford; Joy Wilkinson of Epping; and Christina DiBella of Putney. Set in the early 1800s, Hunters Hill Theatre’s latest stage production will run from June 7 to 23. The Ballad of Maria Marten is a thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery set in Polstead, a small English village in Suffolk.. It’s summer, 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her body is found under the floor of the barn in a grain sack, barely identifiable, and the manhunt begins. The Red Barn Murder, as it became known, attracted phenomenal attention at the time and sparked a media frenzy and was instantly immortalized in ballads, newspapers and film. Although ostensibly a story of dread, grief and violence, the playwright has incorporated moments of joy, laughter and dance. The Southern Hemisphere’s leading multi-artform festival will run from Friday 24 May to Saturday 15 June, featuring the world’s most innovative artists, culinary talent, contemporary musicians and thought leaders as part of its 2024 program under the theme of Humanity. The ‘Lights On’ moment wowed onlookers with over 30 light installations and 3D projections across the famed 8km Vivid Sydney Light Walk, highlighted by the Sydney Opera House featuring the breathtaking new digital artwork, Lighting of the Sails: Echo (2024). Created by multidisciplinary Australian artist and 2023 Archibald Prize Winner Julia Gutman, with creative technologists Pleasant Company, the projection on the Sydney Opera House Sails digitises centuries-old fabric making techniques into an animated, modern epic. “The bright lights of Vivid Sydney are officially on,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said at Friday’s launch. “For the next three weeks Sydney will showcase the magical lights, art and fun of Vivid Sydney. There is something for the whole family, so I encourage everyone to come along and make the most of Vivid Sydney this year.” Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, and Minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham said that since 2009, Vivid Sydney had been a global platform showcasing Sydney’s vibrant culture, bustling nightlife and creative talents. “Going from strength to strength in its 14th year, Vivid Sydney shows the world our colourful creative side. Vivid Sydney shows the world we have big dreams,” he said. “With the majority of this year’s festival being free, we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors back again in the millions. Vivid Sydney Festival Director Gill Minervini said Vivid Sydney was the original festival of light, art and culture, and was celebrating its 14th year with “an incredible line-up of light, music, ideas and food under 2024’s theme of Humanity.” “It is such a privilege and honour to direct this year’s program,” she said. “We’re so excited to bring festival-goers a calibre of Australian and international talent that not only maintains the standard we’ve set in previous years but takes the program to new heights.” Staged across the Sydney CBD, Vivid Sydney festival locations and venues include Circular Quay, the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, State Library of New South Wales, Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, University of Technology Sydney, The Goods Line, Wynyard Tunnels, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Carriageworks, and more. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 29 May, 2024 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/ letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT with Elizabeth Krassoi* Proposed Joubert St traffic changes This is a Transport for NSW proposal. And whilst I acknowledge it’s important that we address the safety and congestion concerns in this area, we need to make sure the works that are being proposed don’t create additional traffic issues. I encourage everyone to share their feedback by filling out the survey on Transport for NSW’s website - yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/joubert-st-hunters-hill. Our journey towards reconciliation I’m thrilled to share that we have officially launched our very first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our RAP which was endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, lays the foundations for our commitment to our Indigenous Australians, priming the workplace for future reconciliation initiatives and movements. This is a significant milestone for our Council, marking the beginning of a meaningful journey toward reconciliation. I encourage everyone to take the time to read through this important document, as it outlines our commitment to our First Nations People and our plans for the future. The RAP can be found at www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/RAP. Have your say We have several important policies and plans currently on public exhibition. Visit Connect Hunters Hill at Connect.huntershill.nsw.gov.au to read through these documents and share your feedback with us. One of the important documents on exhibition is the Draft Henley Precinct Masterplan. Transport for NSW is proposing to make traffic changes at the intersection of Gladesville Road and Joubert St, Hunters Hill. The proposal will remove the ability for vehicles to turn right out of Joubert Street (south) and has the capacity to significantly impact traffic flows on Howard Place, Gladesville Road and onto the overpass. This is a vital document that incorporates our community’s vision of making the precinct safer, more inclusive, and user-friendly for existing and future use of the precinct. The Masterplan is on exhibition until next Monday, 3 June. We are also preparing our Draft Net Zero Implementation Plan, detailing how we can achieve net-zero emissions as a community. We are conducting a survey until Sunday 16 June to help guide our actions. By participating in the survey, you will not only help us to inform the Plan, but you will also have the chance to win a $100 Harris Farm gift card. Additionally, we have our draft Stormwater Management Policy and Watercraft Storage on Foreshore and Public Lands Policy on exhibition until Next Wednesday, 5 June 2024. Lastly, our draft 2024-25 Operational Plan, Budget and Fees & Charges and Outdoor Sport and Recreation Plan is open for feedback until Monday 17 June 2024. I encourage you to provide your valuable feedback to contribute to the development of these important documents. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Can we save our heritage fabric with adaptive design? Up until quite recently, it wouldn’t have been difficult, for some, to justify the demolition or relocation of significant buildings and heritage infrastructure in pursuit of the developer dollar or the delivery of State Government priorities. Fortunately, in the last decade, the economic advantage of considering the whole worth of a building, now includes the social and environmental cost and opportunity. Older buildings, through clever contemporary planning (and sometimes a little compromise) now breathe again rather than languish in heritage decay. With our expanding population, every Sydney suburb needs to participate in how we create more dwellings, but also how we deliver the associated infrastructure and meet the social needs of this growing population. There is a worthwhile conversation to be had about the important role of local communities and local government in determining our specific tolerance for more density, how that might look and where it will be planned. It is vital that we, residents and Council, advocate together on how we want to look in an expanding world city. With well thought out, moderate increases in density, Hunters Hill will need to also consider how we deliver the associated infrastructure for the cultural and social benefit of the community. Good local governance, strong advocacy to the other tiers of government and most importantly, genuine civic engagement and partnership are integral to successful design outcomes. In my opinion, a great example of working together on a social project is the new Master planning for the Henley Community Precinct. On the advice of our operational team, Hunters Hill Council recently voted to invest in the expertise needed to work with our community in the master planning of this beautiful area, which stretches down to the waterfront and which houses club As a relatively young city compared to most European cities, Sydney could once have been forgiven for believing that we lacked the resources to grow as a city at the same time as retaining our small amount of built heritage. sport, passive recreation, community groups, natural bushland, a preschool and an the old bowling clubhouse. The location may have once been a target for developers, but is now at the heart of an amazing adaptive redesign concept, with the old clubhouse and lawns becoming the centrepiece of an expanded social, environmental, recreation hub. In my opinion, DunnHillam Architects and Urban Planners have brought a sound understanding of everything that NSW adaptive reuse guidelines endorse: planning and land-use governance, heritage management and conservation, building codes and regulation, funding and financing mechanisms. Their experience extended to the important wider fields of culture, sustainability, and engagement. It is through their stakeholder and community engagement sessions and their experience with adaptive building and precinct design that DunnHillam have created a Master Plan for a beautiful community precinct that our residents might look forward to seeing unfold, embrace and enjoy for quite some time. While I am motivated, at a governance level, by the importance of local control over local planning outcomes, I continue to advocate for residents to also remain engaged with planning processes. The Henley Community Precinct masterplan is currently on public exhibition for comment until June 3rd. * Clr Elizabeth Krassoi is Deputy Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Plans for Eastwood Dear Sir, I wish to make known the massive planning exercise before the State Government and Ryde City Council (LDA 2042/0092) which will result in rebuilding the Eastwood Centre and replace it with a large grassless collection of buildings, two towers up to 18 storeys above road level and several blocks with 400-plus units and multiple shops and businesses. These buildings will cast shadows over a large part of the suburb and cause massive traffic congestion all at once. No one denies that the centre needs rebuilding but the wishes of and disruptions to those living in the area need to be heard and taken into urgent consideration. The Eastwood centre had a DA approved plan a number of years ago but a new one has been put in, stimulated by the Government move to put urban high-rise buildings close to transport. I personally saw what has happened to Chatswood and decided we do not need mini clusters of high-rises all over the place but rather satellite separate cities in what is a very large country. Careful - and definitely NOT developer-driven - planning of traffic with an additional lane to pull off into on Rutledge Street going East are needed as well as subterranean pedestrian access to Eastwood station at both Plaza and Railway Station levels. The planning notions that trucks and service vehicles can be unloaded in West Parade between Rutledge and the Railway line on the same side is a physical impossibility driven by greed or ignorance or both. We as residents need to fight the profit-only motive to prevent massive further congestion to an already over congested and visited suburb. I urge all residents to respond to Council as soon as possible before the deadline of June 21, 2024. DR JOHN BEATTIE OAM Eastwood Meadowbank Railway Road developments Dear Sir, As a long-time resident of Meadowbank I go for my daily walk from Stone Street, to See Street, right into Constitution Road and left into Railway Road all of which leads me to make a suggestion to the movers and shakers of TWT. Considering the transformative changes that are now taking a preliminary beginning, that I am guessing will take maybe 12 months before conclusion it would be good if TWT did some research – maybe in alliance with the Ryde Historical Society and to publish a background to the early days when the row of shops and the two factory buildings began. I think that just a few weeks ago, the last shop closed and at about the same time a detailed sign was placed on show (quite small and unnoticeable) with men in hi-vis placing markings on the footpaths and protective materials around the trees along the footpath. Another interesting piece of history would be the stairs leading up from the corner shop of Railway Road and Constitution Road – where the stairway tread-fronts have small tiles in decorative landscapes/ patterns. I wonder if that will go down with the demolishers. That leads to a question could it/should it be saved for posterity? I think ‘yes’. Perhaps the fronts could be saved and re-presented as ‘An art from the past’. ALAN HOLROYD Meadowbank Temporary lane closures on Victoria Road Working hours include five night shifts between 9pm to 5am, Monday to Saturday. Work is not scheduled on Sunday or public holidays. This work is to allow Transport for NSW (Transport) to carry out performance load testing on the bridge, which carries citybound traffic across Burns Bay Road on the approach to Gladesville Bridge. The work will involve instrumentation being fixed to the underside of the bridge and a heavy vehicle driving over the bridge to conduct load testing. During the testing, the left-hand lane and middle lane of the bridge will be closed. The right-hand lane will be intermittently closed for short periods, with traffic allowed to pass in between the tests. The temporary lane closures on Burns Bay Road will remain in place. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App. Motorists are advised there will a temporary closure of two lanes on the bridge on Victoria Road at Huntleys Point, through to Saturday June 1.

Inner Sydney licensed venues can stay open an extra two hours on Sundays from 26 May to 9 June, allowing festival-goers to continue enjoying Vivid Sydney 2024 longer after dark. ☐ Minister for Arts, Night Time Economy and Music, John Graham Communications Minister visits 2RRR studios The Minister was thrilled to see first hand the diverse stories that are broadcasted by 2RRR to diverse audiences across Ryde and Hunters Hill, including the Youth Jukebox which showcases high school students getting involved in radio to engage with younger local communities. Chris Davis, who is in Year 12 at Hunters Hill High, was broadcasting at the time of the Minister’s visit and said it was an exciting opportunity to spend 20 minutes interviewing the Communications Minister responsible for Community Radio across Australia. “I’ve only ever done five interviews before and suddenly I’ve got a government minister live in my studio as well as the local MP”, he added. Station Manager, Natalie de Silver said Chris had prepared a series of questions for the Minister with very little notice. “He covered in-depth issues like the government’s battle with Meta (formerly Facebook) over news content, and the government’s attempts to ban so-called misinformation and disinformation,” Natalie said. She mentioned that apart from Youth Jukebox that is heard Mondays to Thursdays from 4pm, 2RRR also awards Youth Scholarships embracing formal radio training, podcasting, production and presenting. “This and other initiatives can only be achieved through the principal support of 2RRR with funding by the Federal Government, as additionally supported by our Sponsors and Members,” she said. “Whilst Youth are an important focus, 2RRR extends to community partners, including The Northern Centre (Family Domestic Violence), StreetWork (Kids at Risk) and AusSip (Youth Work Experience) amongst others.” The Federal Government is committed to supporting 2RRR and community radio stations across the country. In the last financial year alone, $21.89 million has been provided to the Community Broadcasting Foundation. 2RRR received more than $120,000 in Development & Operations and Special Broadcasting grants under the Foundation’s Community Broadcasting Program. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 29 May, 2024 New Zero Emissions Bus depot on the way for Macquarie Park The purpose-built depot will be designed to recharge and operate around 165 battery electric buses, on a current industrial space on Talavera Road. It will service passengers in the lower North Shore and North West suburbs, stretching across to Ryde and Parramatta once completed in 2028. Once the depot is open in 2027, it will operate with around 160 people including bus drivers, maintenance workers and administration staff. “It’s our responsibility to ensure that every citizen has access to clean, efficient transportation options,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said. “That’s why we’re committed to the rollout of Zero Emission Buses across our state.” Transport for NSW has committed to keeping the community updated as the project progresses and will notify residents and business owners of any construction activities in advance of work commencing early next year. The project forms part of the state’s plan to modernise the 8,000 plus bus fleet, as part of its multi-billion-dollar Zero Emission Buses Program, a New South Wales Government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Federal Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale said a move towards a sustainable and renewable future takes a collection of big and small changes, all working together. “I’m proud that our community is part of this clean transport revolution,” he said. “The new Zero Emissions Bus depot is good for the environment, good for residents and will provide more jobs and infrastructure in our local area.” Former state Labor candidate Lyndal Howison said zero emissions buses being charged in Macquarie Park was a “double win.” “A new local depot will give us improved reliability for services when it becomes operational,” she said. “It’s a significant investment by both the Albanese and Minns governments, here in Ryde. “See you on the bus!” A new state-owned zero emission bus depot will be built at Macquarie Park in Sydney following a funding allocation of $115 million in this year’s Federal Budget. ☐ Former Labor state candidate for Ryde, Lyndal Howison and federal Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, at the proposed site for the new electric bus depot in Macquarie Park. Celebrating World Environment Day Running from 10am - 2pm, it promises to be an action-packed day of education and activities, giving everyone the chance to be a part of something bigger, showing how we can individually make a difference as we work towards making our world a better place. The festival will help to demystify and understand the day-to-day processes involved in living a sustainable lifestyle and prove that it doesn’t have to cost a lot or take up all your time. There will be more than 30 information, market stalls, interactive activities, and workshops on site, each offering a unique, informative experience. There will be Australian wildlife display animal talks happening every 30 minutes, a bush adventure and river show with craft and tactile activities for all ages, fun lessons about the fun side of recycling at the Veolia stall, and tips on how to create an insect friendly hotel at the Australian Environmental Education stall. At the Macquarie University tent, you can get involved with hands on activities demonstrating solutions to big sustainability challenges, with a showcase on renewable wind and solar energies, efficient robots for more sustainable agriculture, and how to use fruit to capture light and produce solar energy. City of Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown said the festival was a vital part of Council’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and meeting the challenges of climate change. “There is no doubt that protecting and future-proofing our natural environment is one of the most important tasks facing us all,” Clr Brown said. “At City of Ryde, we are committed to promoting sustainable living, waste reduction, biodiversity of our natural habitats, sustainable transport, and resilience in our community. “I’m proud to say that Council is well on its way to achieving its Net Zero Emissions target by 2035, or sooner, and our community New Zero Emissions target by 2040, or sooner.” He said he hoped attendees would be inspired to become ‘Resilience Ready Residents’. City of Ryde’s annual Sustainability Festival takes place on Sunday 2 June 2024 at Anzac Park in West Ryde and offers the community an informative, fun experience celebrating World Environment Day. EVENTS IN OUR CITY RYDE CENTRAL TIMELINE In this part of my series documenting the history of Ryde Central, I’m going to be looking at the timeline of the project from 2011 until the development application approval in 2021. It was a decade of flip-flopping, controversy and, ultimately, inactivity. In July 2011, an independent assessment estimated that $38.4 million worth of refurbishments were needed to make the ageing 1960s era Ryde Civic Centre and Civic Hall fully Building Code of Australia compliant. On 12 June 2012, a detailed proposal to develop the Civic Centre site was endorsed by Council and was to return, at minimal cost, a new multi-purpose facility valued at $79 million. But following Local Government elections on 25 September 2012, the 12 June resolution was rescinded and during 2013 and 2014 Council further explored maintenance and refurbishment options which ranged in cost from $4.3 million to $11.91 million. At an Extraordinary Council Meeting on 20 October 2015, Council resolved to relocate from the Civic Centre because of the ongoing health and safety issues and substantial refurbishment costs and secured alternative accommodation in North Ryde. By July 2017, redevelopment was back on the table with the project officially named Ryde Central and in May 2019 Council resolved to commence consultation on the plan, which was to be financially sustainable. In January 2020, the development application for ‘The New Heart of Ryde’ was referred to the Sydney North Planning Panel, with the capital investment estimated at $108 million. The DA was approved in February 2021, with the Panel stating the project, “will make a significant positive contribution to the Ryde Town Centre”. Council was to retain 100 percent ownership of the site and the project was to be completely funded without raising rates or reducing services. Next week: the demolition of Ryde Civic Centre. OUR YOUNG STARS As patron of the Ryde Sports Foundation, it was my pleasure to attend the latest Sports Star of the Month Award night at North Ryde Golf Club where the impressive achievements of touch footballer Mikayla Kelleher, wheelchair tennis player Hayley Slocombe, and steeplechaser Adam Bruntsch were recognised. Officers attached to Ryde Police Area Command arrived to find a 29-year-old man had been stabbed several times in the neck and body. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition. A crime scene was established, and detectives commenced inquiries into the incident. Following inquiries, police arrested a 37-year-old man outside Blacktown Hospital about 3.45pm the following day (May 22). He was taken to Blacktown Police Station where he was charged with wounding person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. He was refused bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court last Thursday. Lolley was crowned the 2023-24 A-League Player of the Year as the recipient of the Alex Tobin Medal. The Award cames with a $10,000 prize and either an Isuzu D-Max or Mu-X Ute to donate to the club of his choice - Macquarie Dragons. Macquarie Dragons President Sherif Yazbeck chose the Isuzu D-Max and was thrilled to received the keys. “It’s massive for our club,” Macquarie Dragons President Sherif Yazbeck said. “We have multiple fields so we’ll be using it (the Isuzu D-Max Ute) to transport equipment between all our fields and to also transport our VIPs to all the grounds.” “A special thankyou to Channel Ten, Paramount Plus, Isuzu and of course, Joe Lolley.” Young Macquarie Dragons players braved the wet weather at the presentation earlier this month at Sydney FC’s Macquarie Park headquarters, ‘Sky Park’ and later queued for Lolley autographs and photos. Network Ten’s Tristan Macmanus presented Sydney FC striker Joe Lolley with the Alex Tobin Medal. Lolley’s 12 goals and seven assists during the regular season earned him the Tobin award and title of the A-League’s best player, as voted by Network Ten’s panel of experts. But his season was cut prematurely short when he sustained hamstring tendon injury when scoring arguably the goal of the year in his side’s 4-0 elimination final weekend thrashing of Macarthur FC. “It was a frustrating way to end the season, but I really, really enjoyed it,” he said. “Without the staff and the players helping me along the way it wouldn’t have been possible and I feel really honored.” Meanwhile, Lolley’s team mate, midfielder Anthony Caceres was awarded the eToro Playmaker of the Year award during the formalities at last Saturday’s A-League Grand Final at Gosford’s Industree Group Stadium. __________________ SEE ALSO PAGE 15 - ‘MARINERS CLAIM HISTORIC TREBLE’ LOCAL FOOTBALL club Macquarie Dragons has scored itself a new Isuzu UTE to help with the task of carting around equipment on match days, courtesy of Sydney FC’s goal-scoring superstar, Joe Lolley. ☐ Above, Rain didn’t dampen this Macquarie Dragons player’s excitement after star Sydney FC striker Joe Lolley signed his boots; and below left, Lolley poses for a photo with some of the Macquarie Dragons players. Edwards and fellow co-captain Nathan Power are returning for their second Games. Lachy Edwards - brother of Blake - continues the family tradition and will also compete in his second Games, with the remaining 10 team members making their Olympic debut. It will be Edwards’ first Games as a dad – with son Jude born on Mother’s Day earlier this month. “It’s always good to reflect on the journey, and it’s obviously a little different to making your first team,” he said. “I’ve taken the time to look back recognised all the hard work that has put me in a position to go to my second Olympic Games, and now I’m fully focused on making sure I’m ready and the team’s ready for Paris. “It was a big driving factor to go again this cycle - we weren’t able to share the experience with our family and friends in Tokyo. He said he was sure there would be many tears shed by his mum throughout the two weeks. “I’m extremely proud to be standing there with Lachy again - he’s overcome so much this cycle and he’s going to be a huge asset to our team,” Edwards said. “The thing that’s exciting for us is that we know that our best can really challenge anyone in the world and so knowing that our best is good enough to challenge any team…the outcome or possibilities are endless.” Queenslanders Nic Porter and Marcus Berehulak, West Australians John Hedges and Luke Pavillard, and New South Welshmen Angus Lambie, Charlie Negus, Chaz Poot, Jacob Mercep, Matthew Byrnes and Milos Maksimovic complete the Sharks squad for Paris. Power, Blake and Lachlan Edwards, Lambie, Poot, Negus, Byrnes and Maksimovic celebrated their announcement with their namesakes at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium’s shark habitat, with the other team members currently training and competing around Australia and internationally. The squad will come together in Canberra in the coming weeks for their Paris 2024 team preparations. The squad announcement brings the Australian Olympic Team size to 100 of an expected 460-strong Team. AOC CEO Matt Carroll congratulated the athletes on their selection. “The AOC is thrilled to announce these 13 athletes to represent Australia in Paris,” Mr Carroll said. “With less than two months until the Opening Ceremony, you can feel the excitement around the Games building.” The men’s water polo competition will take place at the Paris Aquatic Centre (Preliminary rounds), and the Paris La Defense Arena (one preliminary round and the finals) from 28 July to 11 August. The men’s water polo competition is a 12-team tournament. Australia have been drawn in Group B against Tokyo Olympic champions Serbia, bronze medallists Hungary, Japan, Spain and hosts France. FIVE DOCK-based co-captain of the Aussie Sharks Waterpolo team has been named in the squad to compete at the Paris Olympics. Tigers legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach inducted into NSWRL Hall of Fame “Steve was a cornerstone of the NSW forward pack and led from the front to inspire the Blues to several series victories, including the memorable first series win for the state in 1985,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said. “Michael was a goalkicking centre with silky skills who also provided several Origin highlights, most notably when he landed a sideline conversion in the pouring rain at the SCG to secure a win in Game Two of the 1991 series. “They are both worthy additions to the NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame and I congratulate them on their achievement.” Roach, aka ‘Blocker’, joined Balmain from Wollongong Wests in 1982 and went on to have a long and distinguished career as a hard-running front rower with great ball skills. He was part of the 1989 Grand Final team against Canberra Raiders that has gone down as one of the greatest deciders in history. He made 17 appearances for NSW in State of Origin, helping them to series wins against Queensland in 1985-86 and 1990. After retirement, he went on to a successful broadcast career with stints at Channel Nine, 2UE, 2GB and currently Fox Sports. O’Connor was a dual international who made the switch from rugby union to sign with St George Dragons in 1983. He switched to Manly in 1987 and was part of the premiership-winning team that year. He made his debut for NSW in 1985 and turned in a memorable performance after scoring all 18 points in the opening game to set up the Blues’ first series win. Guest at the glittering event included Westpac NSW Blues coach Michael Maguire and the Westpac NSW Blues and True Blues ambassadors including Boyd Cordner, Danny Buderus, Nathan Hindmarsh, Steve Menzies and Craig Wing. True Blues Steve Roach and Michael O’Connor were inducted into the NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame on Monday night in front of almost 500 guests at The Star Event Centre in Pyrmont. ☐ NSWRL Hall of Fame inductees, Tigers legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach and Michael O’Connor (pic: NSWRL) ☐ Blake Edwards in action (pic: Water Polo Australia) ☐ The Mariners celebrate their treble achievement and, below right, Mariners substitute Ryan Edmondson in mid-air celebration after scoring the crucial injury time equaliser. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (Michelle Haywood) Mariners claim historic treble Jason Geria opened the scoring for Victory in the 50th minute with a thumping strike into the top-left corner but in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, Mariners substitute Ryan Edmondson snared a dramatic equaliser to ignite the majority of the 21,379-strong crowd – an all-time record attendance at Industree Group Stadium. Seven minutes into the first period of additional extra time, Miguel Di Pizio scored the goal that set the Mariners on course to the Championship, and became the youngest goalscorer in the history of Australian national league Grand Finals with a composed finish to a clinical Mariners attack. Having claimed the lead the Mariners never relinquished it. Ryan Edmondson’s second of the night deep into the second half of extra-time sealed the club’s second-consecutive Championship title – and a third trophy in 2023-24, along with the Premiers Plate and the AFC Cup title. They become the first Australian side ever to win a treble. Edmondson doubled his season goals tally on a special night for the Englishman, who claimed the Joe Marston Medal as the best afield in the Mariners’ comeback win. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 29 May, 2024 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers Sensational Scoring Spree! Under a full moon on a balmy night, our six foot six winger from Waikato Chiefs Solomon Alaimano scored our first try in the 26th minute on the back of a cross field passing movement that featured an inch perfect pass from rookie half sensation Lachlan Galvin. Two minutes later our reigning Player of the Year young fullback Jahream Bula caught a bomb from Jayden Sullivan to go over next to the posts before Lachlan placed a perfect grubber kick for Samuela Fainu to take the ball on the bounce and put it down on the Cowgirls’ tryline in the 42nd minute. And just to show this type of brilliant attacking play wasn’t a fluke, the Tigers did it again in the second half! Our powerful NSW representative prop forward Stefano Utoikamanu was too big and two strong for the Cowgirl defenders as he barged across their tryline in the 76 minute. A minute later Lebanon international prop forward Alex Twal scored his second try of the season from a Jayden Sullivan bomb after some quick passing put the Tigers in a good field position ten metres out from the Cowgirls’ line. The 28 points scored by the Tigers was their most impressive ‘away’ points tally this season and reminded me of the 36 points we scored against the Gummies at Leichhardt Oval HQ. Supercoach Benji Marshall said he is proud of the effort our team puts in - week after week - in our grand final winning season. He also said we’re playing the type of football our fans want to watch. “One thing when you look at our team and what your fans want to see is, they want a team that competes every week and we’re not short of effort,’’ he said. Benji need look no further than some of his great new signings who include ex-rugby try scoring winger Solomon, who really soars when he gets the ball, can take bombs and make great try saving tackles. Jayden, Jahream, Lachlan and winger Charlie Staines have also been making some amazing tackles and often against opposition forwards twice their size. Young Centre Declan Casey Benji’s new look Tigers scored three tries in six minutes against the Cowgirls in the Indigenous Round in Townsville on Friday night to underline our credentials as the most potent points scoring team in the NRL comp. ☐ Fullback Jahream Bula races towards the Cowgirls’ tryline on Friday night made his NRL debut for the Tigers in Townsville and will be a player to watch in the future. Once again my Man Of The Match is our captain courageous and hooker Api Koroisau. We have a bye next week before we take on the Sinners in The Gong on Friday, June 7 at 8pm. “With the bye next week, I’ll do everything I can to have a look at what’s going good for us,’’ Benji said.
