Father Martin’s Musings When God allows suffering “None of our lives ever turns out exactly the way that we plan it will, it could well be a lot better or lot harder than we plan the important thing is to adapt to what’s before you.” Whenever anyone embraces any significant journey, it’s important to have a strategy to readily adapt to when a storm arises. The commonly used term now is to have a Plan B when things don’t work out so an alternate option can be implemented. It is true that some people have storms in their life as a result of their own making while others have storms as a result of circumstances beyond their control. If people have not been given free will then doing the good, life giving and unifying thing in life would have little or no meaning. Also, some people acquire wisdom as a result of appreciating the negative consequences of their once foolish behaviour. In the Old Testament Book of Job, the author makes clear that God sometimes allows bad things to happen to people while stressing that God is not the cause of bad things happening. This is an important distinction to appreciate. Jesus of Nazareth makes this point; “In the world you will have trouble but in me you will have peace as I have overcome the world.” (John Chapter 16 verse 33) Fr Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital Chaplain in Sydney. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Dear Sir, All indications are that we are likely to experience a spring summer period of extreme heat with temperatures in Sydney rising up to 50C and low rainfall, drought, bushfires and significant air pollution. Whilst air conditioning will provide some relief inside homes and businesses the increased load could result in blackouts. It has been shown that tree canopy can reduce ambient temperatures by up to 10C as well as reducing air pollution. However more than half of Sydney’s councils have lost urban forest cover since 2013, as experts warn that suburbs lacking sufficient trees may become unliveable. Development pressures, poor planning and a failure to value trees have been blamed for the decreased tree canopy in some parts of Sydney even as councils develop urban greening strategies and the state government seeks to plant millions of trees by 2030. Data from the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University and Greener Spaces Better Places found the City of Ryde (-6.9 percentage points), Burwood (-6) and City of Canada Bay (-4.4) councils lost the most urban forest cover between 2013 and 2020. Leafy north shore councils such as Ku-ring-gai (-2.4), Willoughby (-3) and Hunter’s Hill (-4.1) also had less tree canopy in 2020 compared to 2013. Former Planning Minister Rob Stokes said homeowners should plant exotic trees as well as native species around their homes as the state government pushed to boost tree canopy cover and combat urban heat across Sydney. Tree physiologist Dr Sebastian Pfautsch, from Western Sydney University’s School of Social Sciences, said the debate about planting exotic species in residential areas, perhaps instead of than natives, was “long overdue”. He said Australian species, such as gum trees, generally had vertical leaves that created open canopies, while deciduous trees, such as maples, liquidamber and plane trees, had horizontal leaves that provided denser shade. Many trees are reExtreme heat expected moved because they are seen as weeds however Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Wisley in Surrey, said gardeners should stop using the term “weeds” in a derogatory way and instead refer to “weed heroes” or “superweeds”, while Tom Massey at the Royal Entomological Society (RES) said he regarded weeds as “resilient plants”. Whilst Councils have been encouraging residents to plant trees this will take time to have an effect. More importantly is the need to place a moratorium on the removal of trees, particularly those that contribute to the tree canopy. JOHN BIRCH AM Hunters Hill Delay new home impost Dear Sir, The NSW Government need to delay the introduction of the new 7 Star Energy Rating on NEW home builds in NSW. This new Greenie led campaign will add another $20K to $40K to every new home built in NSW. In NSW the signup deadline to avoid this is 1/10/23, as long as you start building by June 2024, while other states and territories have listened to the building industry and delayed this until early to mid 2024. So we have a Federal Government who want to build 1.2 million homes by 2028 under their 5 year plan, while we have a NSW Government that wants to make it a lot dearer to build a new home in NSW. Don’t these MPs talk to each other about heading down the same road in a sensible coordinated way to accommodate a BIGGER Australia that seems to be inevitable? CHRIS PIKE Ryde More Letters Page 5 Hunters Hill Guest Column Community input has played an enormously important role in resolution of two recent motions brought to Council by Clr Ross Williams and myself, firstly regarding the Montefiore Planning Proposal and most recently, the development application (DA) to double the size of Woolwich Marina. Regarding the Montefiore Planning Proposal, two distinguished local retired legal practitioners went to great lengths to provide Council and Councillors with their advice about the application of various State Environmental Planning Policies (SEPPs) to the Montefiore Proposal. We have extraordinary expertise in our community so such assistance should be welcomed and not dismissed because submissions were not invited – Council should be listening to our community at all times. As I advocated from mid-July, Council ultimately sought its own legal advice to clarify the advice of our local lawyers, although this advice was not made available to Councillors until the Friday before the Tuesday Extraordinary Meeting that considered the Montefiore matter. I found the advice of both our local lawyers and that of Council’s legal advisors, which unfortunately remains confidential, extraordinarily helpful in my consideration of this matter. Amendments to the EP&A Act in 2008 undermined public participation in plan making by removing the requirement for two rounds of public exhibition and introducing the gateway process to LEP making, which was criticised then as ‘more complex and uncertain’ than the system it replaced by Zada Lipman and Rob Stokes – the latter became the State’s most capable Planning Minister of recent times. However, it remains possible to engage in consultation beyond the minimum required by the gateway process, as was proposed by another Williams/Sanderson motion, in November last year, to commence the consultation process with a public meeting ‘as soon as practical after receiving a Planning Proposal’. By a 4:3 majority, Council amended the moTo The POINT by Councillor Jim Sanderson Listening to our community One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a Hunter’s Hill Councillor is listening to well informed views that come from our community by whatever means including in conversations while out walking the dog. tion to defer the proposed public meeting. At its June Ordinary Meeting, Council by a 5:2 majority, with Williams and Sanderson against, further deferred the ‘community consultation meeting’ to align with the inadequate community consultation provisions of the gateway process. We should be advocating reform of the planning proposal process rather than seeing a councillor challenge those addressing Council about the risks of not supporting progress of the planning proposal to gateway determination. The quality of the addresses to Council at its Extraordinary Meeting held on 12 September was outstanding and was a decisive factor in delivering the 5:2 majority that did not support the planning proposals that, if ultimately approved, will see an unprecedented impact by normally low impact seniors housing on an environmentally sensitive part of our Municipality. Council has left the door open to ‘Montefiore to resubmit an alternative proposal’, a position that was supported at a community meeting held on 24 August. My hope is that our community will have a seat at the table in shaping a proposal that is both acceptable to Montefiore and will maintain and enhance the character and identity of the surrounding neighbourhood and respect the significance of nearby riverfront, bushland and biodiversity. I had hoped to touch on the outstanding role our community played in Council’s handling of the Woolwich Marina DA but will deal with that elsewhere. Jim Sanderson is an Independent Hunter’s Hill Councillor

Congratulations to Bob Hayes (To the Point, Sept 12), President of the Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association and all group members who put in countless hours of work to hopefully ensure a better and more acceptable outcome can be reached with Montefiore’s planning proposal. There needs to be greater consideration given to our local character and amenity, the height and scale of structures and enforcement of heritage conservation controls to help preserve and protect our unique Municipality and bushland environment. The continued loss of streetscape and history, the diminishing of green space and mature trees in favour of more saturated multi-storey development, creating increased traffic congestion and parking limitations is rightfully reaching the limits of community acceptance. It goes without saying all residents of Hunters Hill have a stake in this game wherever they reside. The consequences of getting it wrong could be life changing for generations to come. We know excess can be destructive. Liveability is a must and social cohesion among neighbours cannot be taken for granted. The power of community action cannot be underestimated and we trust that any further development will prove that common sense and respect for the public good can win the day. KARYN RAISIN President Hunters Hill Trust Centenarian Bill Tait passes away A True Gentleman Centenarian Bill Tait passed away on September 3. His family described him as “a true gentleman”. “Bill grew up in Drummoyne with his parents Cedric and Marcelle and his two brothers and two sisters,” they said in a tribute. “His first language was French due to his mother being New Caledonian. The family said he grew up “messing about in boats”on Sydney Harbour and Pittwater. “He sailed the family yacht ‘Epacris’ racing and cruising with the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, surf lifesaving at Newport SLSC and rowing for Sydney Grammar School, Sydney University and the Sydney Rowing Club,” the family said. He married Annette in 1952 and had five children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. “Bill is survived by his children, their families and his sister Jacqueline,’’ the family said. “He will be interred in the family plot at Waverley Cemetery.” To attend the Memorial Service contact Stephen Tait on 0414 637 675. Denistone Station gets a big lift The upgrade includes two new lifts connecting the station entry to the platforms, while accessible paths from the new lifts to the boarding assistance zones have been upgraded. “Creating an accessible, reliable public transport system is my top priority,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said. “Improvements like this one reflect our commitment to creating a safe and accessible network.” New station canopies and accessible seating have been installed on both platforms, while handrails have been adjusted to meet current standards. A commuter drop-off space has been established on Gordon Crescent, along with a new accessible parking space. Footpaths to the station have also been upgraded to accessible standards. Two new accessible bathrooms are now operational within the existing station building, along with upgrades to CCTV, lighting and wayfinding. Transport for NSW also responded to community requests to see the station’s Inter-War style with Art Deco influences retained, reinstating the heritage awning at the entrance and windows to the platform waiting room. Opening day at the new station featured a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony, Red Set vintage train rides and a free sausage sizzle for residents and visitors, with Ryde Rotary members and friends on the BBQ tools. “Denistone is a small station, but with an incredible history. It’s served commuters for more than 85 years, but now for the first time, it will be fully accessible for everyone,” Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale said. “We’ve had to campaign long and hard for every accessibility upgrade in the Ryde area. Residents in Denistone have been advocating for this upgrade since before I joined Ryde Council in 2012, now they will be able to make the most of these improvements. “I’m also pleased we now have a State Labor Government that will fight for accessible stations that are as good as this one, across NSW.” For more information on the Denistone Station Upgrade project, please visit transport.nsw.gov.au/denistone-station-upgrade ☐ NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen and Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale give the thumbs up to new lift; above, Ryde MP Jordan Lane discusses the problem of graffiti at the station with Ryde Neighbourhood Watch president Phil Brown; and below, Ryde Rotary members and friends on the BBQ tools on Sunday. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 27 September, 2023 Marsfield residents condemn Sydney Water tree demolition “Many residents are deeply saddened by the loss of these trees and are extremely disappointed that Sydney Water was unable to preserve and incorporate them into their plan to build an additional water tank on the site,’’ the residents told The Weekly Times. “These trees are situated on the border of the site and serve as a buffer between the site and the residential buildings.” It has been Sydney Water’s practice to plant new trees to replace those removed to for essential works but the residents said the trees that have been removed are decades old and cannot be replaced. “The planned tree offset replanting will not occur on-site due to its small size and the new location is currently unknown and won’t be of benefit to the local residents,’’ they said. “Any newly planted trees would take decades to reach the same stature as the ones being removed. “The loss of these 22 trees will also disrupt the habitat that local wildlife relies on, diminish their contribution to air filtration and permanently deprive local residents of the many benefits these trees provide.” The residents said they had urged Sydney Water not to cut down the trees, without success. “We have been urging them to explore ways to protect these trees and integrate them into their plans but unfortunately they are still proceeding with the tree removal, citing that six trees have health or structural issues and the remaining 16 need to be removed to make way for the necessary infrastructure.” The residents concede the additional water tank is needed to serve the needs of the fast growing local area but feel that Sydney Water has not done enough to find an alternative local site. The Weekly Times has obtained correspondence from Sydney Water to the residents but it deals with issues related to the removal work. “Our work will be noisy at times however we are working to reduce impacts,” Sydney Water said. “To give respite to our neighbours during our work, we won’t Around forty residents neighbouring Sydney Water’s Marsfield Reservoir on Abuklea Road have condemned Sydney Water’s removal of 22 trees last week. CCA NSW Chairperson, Peter Garrard, said the organisation was established more than 50 years ago and was originally run by the local churches because they wanted to help the community. “I guess you would call it a small local cottage kind of charity where we did things that met local needs,” he told The Weekly Times. “As the years have gone by, we’ve increased in size and have become a medium to large sized charity. “We have more than 25 full-time employees and a large financial turnover from government and other grants. Today, we are a very professional outfit.” He said the organisation was growing because of the increase in numbers of those in need. “We’re there to serve the needs of the community,” Mr Garrard said. “And if they live locally, they can knock on our front door and ask for help. “If we can supply it, we will. If we can’t, we’ll refer them along to an organization that will help.” The organisation delivers a vast array of programs that drive increasingly stronger, inclusive and resilient communities. CCA NSW firmly believes in the collective strength of community and in recognition of the barriers and difficulties faced by today’s families. It delivers holistic programs designed to address the immediate financial, social, emotional, mental health and family violence stresses right across the community, ultimately leading to better life outcomes. Services range from family day care, supported play groups and a toy library to a range of leadership, resilience and employment services for youth. “We run family daycare for children and have more than 56 educators, which we know is a big operation to run in its own right,” Mr Garrard, a former Epping Boys High School principal, said. “Recently, we were audited by the NSW Education Department and received the second highest possible rating for our services, so we’re doing extremely well in that regard.” CCA NSW is also engaged in advocacy, has an active and popular ‘meals on wheels’ and organises social outings and shopping trips for its clients. It also operates transport services for those needing to get to their medical appointments, along with wellbeing phone calls to the elderly and those unable to leave their homes. “We have a very large ageing and disability sector that we respond to,” Mr Garrard said. “That includes Meals on Wheels every day of the year except Christmas and Easter. “We deliver somewhere averaging around 5000 meals a month and that also takes a huge amount of organisation and we also have to be assessed by the health authorities to ensure - for example - that meals are being frozen and heated properly.” More recently, he said, CCA NSW had established a ‘Community Store’ with goods provided from Foodbank and local shops. “Those people who are in need can come to us twice a week if they meet the criteria in terms of their income, etcetera and get a terrific deal from our community store,” he said. CCA NSW offers a range of volunteer opportunities to explore different possibilities of giving back to the community. As a ‘For Purpose - Not for Profit’ organisation, CCA NSW depends solely on donations and government funding. The current high costs of living and housing and financial stress the organisation, more than ever, needs the support of the community. CCA NSW also accepts donations from the public to help fund services needed by vulnerable community members. Sky Blues to take on Brisbane Roar in Australia Cup final Saturday week With Football Australia aiming for a new record attendance at an Australia Cup Final – currently standing at 18,751 (Melbourne City FC vs Sydney FC, 2016 Final) – fan and family-friendly tickets prices have been set for the pixture. Tickets start at $12 Junior, $15 Concession, $25 Adult, and $65 Family, with general public tickets on sale at 2pm this Friday via Ticketek. The host city and match day venue for the Australia Cup Final is at the discretion of Football Australia, where venue suitability and availability are key factors in any determination. With Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium unavailable on the weekend of October 7 and October 8, Ballymore Stadium under renovation with a reduced capacity, and Kayo Stadium’s (Redcliffe, QLD) capacity at 10,000, Football Australia confirmed Allianz Stadium as the most suitable venue to host this year’s Final. The Australia Cup is the only competition in Australian sport where amateur clubs get the opportunity to compete against the sport’s premier clubs, in their shared vision of being crowned Cup Winners. In 2023, a record number of 775 clubs competed in this year’s competition, with two remaining: Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar FC. This will be Sydney FC’s fourth Australia Cup (formerly FFA Cup) Final appearance (2016, 2017, 2018, 2023) and Brisbane Roar FC’s first time qualifying for the big dance. The outgoing Lord Mayor said he was excited to see community members line up to be among the first to explore it. “The smiles on the faces of the kids splashing around says it all as this is a facility will bring joy to our whole community,” he said. “We’ve created a place where our community can have fun for generations to come, a place where kids will swim their first lap and race to victory at the swimming carnival, where future Olympians will be nurtured, where families can cool down on a long, hot summer day.” Parramatta MP Donna Davis said the Parramatta Aquatic Centre is an example of how State and Local government can work together for the benefit of the community. “After being involved in this project from its inception, it’s fantastic to be here today to celebrate its opening with the people who fought so hard to ensure Parramatta has an aquatic facility that serves the needs of the community,” she said. NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman said the new Parramatta Aquatic Centre was an example of infrastructure and community amenities that the former government had been delivering for Western Sydney. “Funded with almost $40 million from our Restart NSW program, the Aquatic Centre is the kind of community infrastructure that our government was able to deliver because of our careful economic management,” Mr Speakman said. Shadow Sport Minister Eleni Petinos said construction of the new Parramatta Aquatic Centre began in 2021 and boasts a number of important sustainable design features, including 358 rooftop solar panels, natural ventilation in the fitness centre, three rain gardens, a rain tank for onsite irrigation and sustainably harvested blackbutt timber. “The Parramatta community can now enjoy the brand new 10-lane, 50-metre outdoor pool, 25-metre indoor pool and even a water playground thanks to the investment from the former Liberal Government”, Ms Petinos said. “The Parramatta Aquatic Centre also has a new fitness centre, a cafe and creche facilities, as well as community rooms – making it a great new facility for the whole community.” Accessibility is at the forefront of the new facility’s design with features including the City’s first all-abilities pool with ramps to enter the 50m and 25m pool and a level, beach-style entry into the water ‘splash and play’ zone. There are accessible change rooms; lifts and ramps to all indoor and outdoor areas and gym equipment suitable for people of all abilities. ☐ Shadow Sports Minister Eleni Petinos, Olympian Emma McKeon and Opposition Leader Mark Speakman at Monday’s launch. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 27 September, 2023 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers sign grand star rookies Recent NRL debutant and hooker Tallyn Da Silva will join Josh Feledy, Brandon Webster-Mansfield, Jordan Miller and Lachlan Galvin in the top squad from November. Kit Laulilii - who made his NRL debut alongside Josh in Round 27 - is also expected to join the squad next season with Chris Faagutu, Solomone Saukuru and Tony Sukkar, tipped to break into the senior ranks based on their form this season in reserve grade competitions. You can bet Ma-In-Law’s pension fund on grand final glory for these outstanding rookies as Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe says the club’s sizeable investment in its Pathways Program for juniors is crucial to Benji’s plans. We have seen this year alone several players who have come through our system and there will be more on the rise next season and in the years to come, that’s what it’s all about, he says. Already a huge favourite with Tiger fans, Tallyn upgraded from the Tigers Pathways Program to the NRL last season and took on the hooker role as captain Api Koroisau moved to the halves. The young hooker reckons playing first grade is a dream come true and he is looking forward to joining Josh, Brandon, Jordan and Lachlan in the top squad training camp from November. Onitoni Large (16) and younger brother Ashton (14) are the youngest players included in the club’s roster and are scheduled to transition from their school and junior representative programs next season. A further group of players will be given opportunities during the NRL pre-season later this year as part of an extended NRL squad from November. This group of players will include local Balmain juniors Keenan Lawandos and Cayne Nicholas alongside Heath Mason and Will Craig. Tigers General Manager (Pathways) Matthew Betsey says having these young players already locked in is a significant step in the club’s long-term planning as well as being a reward for the coaching staff. The plan is to help build the best possible roster for Benji as he transitions into his role as head coach, so it is wonderful to see our elite development system bearing fruit, with so many players making their NRL debuts this season, Matt reckons. The Tigers are currently in the process of appointing coaching staff across all pathway’s programs with team trials being held over the past fortnight. The Tigers have secured their six most sought after rookies, who will join Benji Marshall’s NRL squad next season. 117 Ryedale Road West Ryde NSW 2114 Tel: 02 9807 2444 www.releagues.com.au www.facebook.com/rydeeastwoodleagues 7.30PM-11.30PM, FRIDAY 29 SEPTEMBER Gig Guide Visit website or scan QR code to book!
