They’re really scraping at the bottom of the barrel. How low can you get and still seek credibility and respect? The hypocrisy is mind boggling. How many citizens would know that Baird and co have arranged “public” meetings to have the fi nal say on council mergers? The only announcement was a jumble of nondescript advertisements in the two daily papers and not a word to the local press or community. 2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2024 Father Martin’s Musings We reap what we sow Tragically he and his wife were killed during a bombing blitz over London in 1941. Only recently I came across one of his most memorable quotes; “That it is easy to dodge our responsibilities in life, but we cannot for long escape the conse- quences that come from dodging our responsi- bilities.” When I heard this, I thought that this quote per- haps needs a while to reflect on before its wisdom becomes apparent! One of the long-term dangers of our western society is seen in how so many people have de- veloped a cold indifference to many life commit- ments and even truth itself. Of course, this indifference may often bring some short-term gratification, but it does not bring with-it long-term peace, inner joy or social stability. This is seen these days when many people who are entering marriage have a divorce mentality rather than being committed to work through the inevitable challenges and problems. It’s also seen in the casual option that many people have towards aborting an unplanned pregnancy. Another quote that endorses the message made by Lord Stamp is “that short term pain when embraced in life often leads to long term gains.” Saint Paul of Tarsus sums up the above reality so well in these words; “We will reap what we sow in life whether it be in the spirit of truth or in self-indulgence.” (Galatians Chapter 6, verse 7) Fr Martin Maunsell is a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Sydney Lord Josiah Stamp is remembered as an English industrialist, civil servant and writer. Local girl a poster model Cat of the Week and poster girl Tammy Pussycat is currently available for adoption from the World League where the team describe her as friendly and majestic. “Meet Tammy, an absolute gem of a feline who has overcome adversity and captured the hearts of all who meet her,’’ the team said. “She’s absolutely majestic, with a personality as beautiful as her coat, who is also incredibly friendly and who has endeared herself to everyone.” The team said one of Tammy’s most striking personality traits is her inherent friendliness with other cats. “She possesses an enviable ability to maintain harmonious relationships in a multi-cat household, making her an excellent choice for those who already have feline companions,” the team said. Dragon themed creative workshops will be held at PHIVE in Parramatta from Tuesday, February 6 until Thursday February 8 to celebrate Lunar New Year. Joey Chan elected president of Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club “Our club, a beacon of community and friendship for over three decades, holds a special place in my heart,” Joey told The Weekly Times. “I’m committed to preserving our values while introducing new perspectives and initiatives to enrich our community. “My deepest gratitude to past presidents for their hard work and wise leadership, instrumental in nurturing ECSCC’s growth over the years.” For full disclosure, The Weekly Times must say that Joey is one our favourite community contacts - always happy, energetic and selfless and not scared to roll her sleeves up to get the job done. TWT is looking forward to a very productive relationship with Joey during her presidency. “With your support and that of other communities, we aim to build an even more inclusive and vibrant space,” Joey said. Joey (‘Unstoppable’) Chan has made history, becoming the first female president of the Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club (ECSCC) since its establishment in 1991. ☐ New ECSCC president Joey Chan “We’re open to collaboration with other communities, aiming for harmony and vibrancy. PHYLLIS EDWARDS has achieved yet another milestone - adding another year to an amazing life that now spans more than 107 years. When we asked Phyllis last year about the keys to her longevity, she told us she has “always been part of a loving family and had many good friends” to keep her interested and also, she likes keeping busy and enjoys he food. Most of the family are well aware of the superfood that has fuelled Phyllis for so long - a banana a day! Unsurprisingly - like most of our readers - Phyllis continues to read The Weekly Times every week, cover to cover. She was thrilled to receive congratulations and 106th birthday wishes from His Majesty King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla last year and then again last month when she turned 107. Phyllis first received royal correspondence from the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 when she celebrated becoming a centenarian, before a second letter of congratulations came to mark her 105th birthday last year. Born in 1917 at Haberfield, Phyllis has lived in Ryde for 82 years and celebrated her 107th birthday with her extended family on January 2. She remembers horse cabs and Ryde consisting of market gardens and attending the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932. Her late husband Roy - who passed away more than 40 years ago - was a builder and their phone number was 25 on the Ryde manual telephone exchange. And she’s survived Spanish flu and two World Wars, so Covid-19 didn’t rate a blip. Phyllis remains an inspiration to all who know her with a great positive attitude to life, not least her two sons and daughter in-laws; seven grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Although technology, specialisation and pharmacology advanced significantly during these decades, Dr Isaacs said one of the most important changes was the introduction of bulk billing in the first years of her tenure. “I’ve always believed in bulk billing and I continued bulk billing until the day I left because I felt people deserved to afford medicine,’’ she said. Dr Isaacs was known for her diligence in checking on the health and welfare of her patients and following up their visits. “By persisting, by asking if they were taking their medicines or keeping their (medical test) appointments, we saved lives,’’ she said. “And my patients trusted me because they could see I was treating them with the same care and respect I would treat a member of my own family.’’ The Balmain based doctor from Gladesville told TWT she ‘’fell in love’’ with being a general practitioner and has never regretted not pursuing a specialist medical career. “The greatest gift in my life was general practice and getting involved in peoples’ lives for 50 years,’’ she said. Her retirement was during the height of the COVID pandemic lockdowns in 2021. “I really didn’t like doing remote medicine and this was a hard time,’’ she recalls. For most of her career in Balmain, Dr Issacs was the sole GP. “It meant I couldn’t be sick because I needed to be there every day, but I can honestly say it was a joyful time.’’ Dr Starlette Anne Isaacs from Gladesville has received the OAM for service to medicine and to community health. ☐ Retired Balmain GP Dr Starlette Isaacs from Gladesville CELL Ryde Labor Councillor shares the limelight this week on the TWT Birthday Honours List having missed out on this year’s Australia Day Order of Australia list but in good right royal company with Australia’s very own Queen Mary of Denmark who celebrates on Sunday while our affable Bernard adds a few extra on Thursday week and no doubt will celebrate at Eastwood Chamber of Commerce’s February meeting Monday February 12 at Club Eastwood with shouts by Chamber president and former Ryde Mayor Vic Tagg and Club President Ray Blunt and co. * * * BOB and MAUREEN BURKE clebrate 61 years weddded bliss today while ARIEL BALAGUE music master of North Ryde will be celebrating his birthday with his wife Jenny Lee and Jenny’s sons Samuel and Jeffery on Friday. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2024 Hunters Hill Guest Column Panel sends Montefiore to Gateway Montefiore is seeking to change its site zoning from low-density two-storey residential to allow proposed buildings up to six-storeys. The requested height (24m) allows, potentially, eight-storeys. The Panel overturned the 5:2 rejection of Mon- tefiore’s Proposal by Hunters Hill Councillors at Extraordinary General Meeting on12 September 2023. The Panel ignored significant, ongoing commu- nity backlash. Council had rejected the Montefiore Planning Proposal for multiple reasons which we believe remain valid (connect.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/montefiore), including: Lack of required strategic and site-specific merit. Failure to comply with relevant Government guidelines, particularly State Environmental Plan- ning Policy (SEPP) (Housing), which wouldn’t allow the building heights sought. Inadequate community consultation. Proposed buildings are too high, too bulky and out of scale with the neighbourhood. Serious impacts on eg. neighbourhood character, integrity, amenity, streetscape, privacy, traffic volumes and parking, stress on existing infrastructure, vulnerable bushland and wildlife plus bushfire and emergency risks. Precedent potential across Hunters Hill for inappropriate Special Purpose Infrastructure zoning in low-density residential zones, contrary to SEPP (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021 and Local Environmental Plan (LEP). The Planning Panel Record of Decision (ROD) states “…the proposed instrument should be submitted for a Gateway Determination because the proposal has demonstrated strategic and site-specific merit.” This is at odds with Council’s 12 September detailed conclusions and resolution. Aspects of the Panel’s processes were disappointing. Firstly, the panel had only three members, not the expected seven. The ROD notes that three previously appointed panel members “…undertook individual site in- spections with the proponent and were therefore On 18 December 2023 the NSW Government Sydney North Planning Panel conducted a Rezoning Review which determined that Montefiore Home’s Planning Proposal (to rezone its Hunter’s Hill (HH) site) should be submitted to Department of Planning for ‘Gateway Determination’. To The POINT Bob Hayes of Boronia Park By removed from the panel.” Secondly, no Hunters Hill councillors were al- lowed to attend the Panel hearing; only one council officer provided a briefing. However, seven Department staff and seven proponent (Urbis) representatives attended the briefings. Thirdly, no community representatives were allowed to attend or brief the Panel, despite Guidelines allowing Chairperson discretion to invite community members who had made representations to a council meeting. Fourthly, the ROD states that, as Council has previously refused to progress the proposal, the Planning Panel determined to appoint itself as Planning Proposal Authority, responsible for con- sent and managing the Proposal’s progress. What now? Gateway Determination is Stage 3 of the 6-stage Gateway process (see Guidelines – Making and Amending LEPs). It’s a checkpoint to review strategic and site-specific merit and whether the proposal should proceed to public exhibition. At this stage there is no formal public input. Public exhibition and assessment isn’t until Stage 5, after Gateway Determination and just before finalization! Our Association isn’t anti-development, but expects Montefiore’s Planning Proposal to comply with relevant guidelines, policies and legislation. We believe it does not demonstrate adequate strategic and site-specific merit, nor comply with Hunters Hill’s LEP’s primary stated aim: “To maintain and enhance the character and identity of established neighbourhoods in Hunters Hill”. Bob Hayes, on behalf of Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association Inc. LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 A breath of fresh air Dear Editor, In December 2016 my family I were fortunate enough to move and live in Putney. Every day I have considered myself blessed to be living in one of the best places in this country. The village environment, open green spaces, parks and public facilities are great. And so I was puzzled to see the Putney Village signs located on Morrison Road on either side of the shopping precent in such bad shape. Faded and almost entirely covered in green coloured mould, they looked awful. I thought that they would be replaced in no time in 2016. Come 2024, some eight years later and still the signage had not been replaced by council. I raised the matter recently with Ryde Councillor Roy Maggio. For anyone who doesn’t know Roy, he is a breath of fresh air - very approachable and not one to muck about. He was onto my request straight away and upon me sending him a picture of the signs, he passed the details on to council staff and kept me updated on how they were dealing with the issue. Within days, the signs were replaced. I often see Roy out and about in our community in Putney talking to all who care to speak to him. He appears to have the interest of the community front and centre and from my recent experience, he doesn’t just talk but gets things done. Roy Maggio for Mayor! JOE CALABRESE Putney Hospital is my priority Dear Sir, The appointment of a preferred builder for the Ryde Hospital redevelopment is a welcome step in this much-needed project. As the local MP for Ryde, I am enormously proud to be fighting for the $479 million redevelopment of our beloved Ryde Hospital — the place that I and so many in our community were born and continue to receive world-class care. My priority this year is to actively push for an expedited timeline for the redevelopment. I’ve heard loud and clear the wishes of our community to have their hospital redeveloped as soon as possible, and I look forward to working constructively with the Minister, Ministry of Health, residents, and all Ryde Hospital staff on this crucial project. Together, we will secure the healthcare needs of our growing local community, while providing our nurses and doctors with an improved, modern workplace and the very best medical facilities. I hope residents will join me in fighting to bring this community wish to fruition and look forward to sharing more news soon. JORDAN LANE Member for Ryde Hunter’s Hill Citizens of the Year Rob contributed to the Greenhouse Project at Giant Steps special education school in Gladesville and aided its transformation into a successful community garden, market and learning resource for students and teachers. Mayor Zac Miles described him as one of Giant Steps’ passionate volunteers who integrated garden activities into the school curriculum. When he received his award at the Town Hall on Australia Day, he encouraged other citizens to follow in his footsteps. “We would love any volunteers to join us as it’s a wonderful way of bonding with nature,” he said. Heather Armstrong is Hunter’s Hill’s Environmental Citizen of the Year. An active volunteer, Heather leads the Great North Walk Bushcare group. “I am grateful for the huge efforts put in by bushcarers in Hunters Hill who maintain the beautiful bushland in the Municipality,” she said. In 2023, it worked over 150 days on deployment supporting flood affected communities and attending over 230 incidents. Group Officer, Louise Demarco received the award on behalf of the Unit. “Our members invest their time in training and preparation to respond to our communities needs and we couldn’t be more proud to volunteer,” she said. Increase amenity before increasing density Before Christmas, the NSW Government announced their proposal to increase housing density across the state by allowing dual occupancy on all low-density residential zoned land. Manor houses, terraces and multi dwelling houses with a building height of up to 9.5m may also be permissible in some low-density residential zoned areas within ‘town centre precincts’ under the new proposal, along with residential flat buildings and shop top housing up to 21m within some medium density residential zone areas. The NSW Government have indicated they will introduce a State Environmental Planning Policy to apply the new rules this year, which will override our councils Local Environment Plan. This will allow applicants to bypass the planning rules that councils have meticulously prepared to reflect their community’s vision, and to protect the amenity and character of their neighbourhoods. Congratulations to the recipients of our Australia Day Awards for their outstanding achievements throughout the year. It was wonderful to see the contributions of so many worthwhile local candidates acknowledged and celebrated; including: Unduly increasing density will have an impact on our local road network, reduce tree canopy and put pressure on our services, schools and community facilities. It’s true, we need more housing in NSW, but it needs to be done in a thought-out process. The first step needs to be assessing and identifying the impact on these services and how this will be alleviated with any increase in density. Council’s strategic planning methods have always ensured that our community grows at a capacity that matches the infrastructure and services in our area. This is the perfect opportunity for the State Government to create a plan that will first increase the amenity of the area rather than put pressure on our limited resources. Hunters Hill needs transport upgrades and better connectivity - this would be the best place to start before a proposal to increase density is considered. The NSW Government is asking for feedback on their proposal and I encourage you all to have your say about how this will impact our community before it closes on Friday 23 February – visit huntershill.nsw. gov.au/nswplanningreforms for more information. NSW Government progresses to next stage of Ryde Hospital redevelopment “I am really pleased the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment is moving ahead and will transform healthcare for the local community, providing the growing community the latest facilities and models of care,” NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said. “This project will expand capacity at the hospital, delivering more adult overnight beds, plus it’ll feature a brand-new ED, ICU, operating theatres, a custom-built ambulatory care centre and a paediatric short stay unit.” “This is a major redevelopment which will provide new and enhanced services within a modern, contemporary facility to ensure patients continue to receive the best possible care.” The NSW Government said the investment would deliver a worldclass health facility to meet the future health needs of the growing community. NSW Health will ensure staff, patients and the community continue to be informed as works progress. Ryde MP Jordan Lane said the project was an important one for the local community and he would continue to advocate for the Ryde community to ensure the hospital redevelopment plans remained on track. “The appointment of a preferred builder is an important next step in the $479m Ryde Hospital development,” Mr Lane told The Weekly Times. “Our community need this project, and my top priority this year will be fighting to have it built as quickly as possible.” Mr Lane, who was born at the existing Ryde Hospital, said the Ryde community was cognisant of how hard local doctors and nurses worked and they deserved to have workplace facilities that were world-class. AW Edwards has been appointed the building contractor for the project with construction expected to start in mid-2024, including demolition of old buildings, construction of new hospital buildings and refurbishment of existing hospital spaces. New sensors end long waits The installation responds to long delays and queues at the intersection caused by the failure of cars to set off the former traffic sensors when stopped behind the Keep Clear zone marked on the road. The Council resolved the problem when it lobbied Transport for NSW to install additional traffic light sensors behind this zone. “This means the sensors can now detect vehicles queued behind both the traffic light and the Keep Clear zone to maximise the traffic flow of vehicles and minimise congestion,’’ a Council spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the new sensors will make the intersection safer for drivers, pedestrians and other road users as well as aligning with Councils commitment to managing and developing a safe and well-connected local transport system. New traffic signal sensors have been installed at the traffic lights on the Church Street overpass at the Durham Street intersection in Hunters Hill. ☐ The Church Street intersection in Hunters Hill. UNICEF appeals for donations UNICEF said thousands of children have been killed or injured in Gaza and almost every child has been exposed to trauma marked by widespread destruction, relentless attacks, displacement and severe shortages of food, water, and medicine. It stressed that large parts of Gaza’s infrastructure, including critical water and sanitation systems, have been reduced to rubble and more than 1.9 million people have been displaced, around half of them children. “The ongoing surge of conflict-related violence continues to take a horrendous toll on the lives of children in Gaza,’’ UNICEF spokesman James Elder said. “And although access is difficult and limited, our teams won’t give up trying to get critical supplies to these children.” Mr Elder said online donations will fund medical supplies, ready-to-eat food, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, bottled water and fuel for the operation of medical units. Wednesday 31 January, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: [email protected] Your City News CITIZENS HONOURED City of Ryde celebrated some very special people on Australia Day eve with our annual Citizen of the Year Awards, which were announced during a ceremony at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Scouting legend Lyn Mann was named Citizen of the Year after four decades of leadership and guidance, especially for the young people who have passed through the 1st East Ryde Scout Group. This is one of the largest and most successful Scout groups in NSW in no small part thanks to Lyn’s continued involvement. Our Young Citizen of the Year Areg Grigorian has been active in the City of Ryde community since the tender age of eight, when he inspired Council’s Walk, Ride, Share campaign and he has continued his fine community work through involvements with the SES and St John’s Ambulance Juniors. I heartily congratulate both Lyn and Areg on the well-deserved honour. NEW ARRIVALS I preside over Citizenship Ceremonies for the City of Ryde throughout the year but the ceremonies we hold on and around Australia Day always have extra significance. So, it was honour to welcome new citizens to the City at both the Citizen of the Year Awards ceremony and the next morning, on Australia Day itself. Sincerely, Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM Mayor Email: [email protected] Phone (via Customer Service): 9952 8222 As a migrant myself, it gives me great joy and pride to welcome our new community members, knowing that they could not have chosen a better place to live, to work, to play, and to raise their families. Council reaffirmed its commitment to holding Citizenship Ceremonies on Australia Day during the Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 23 January. BUILDING DEFECTS Like everyone else, I was shocked by the recent sensational media reports of building defects in the apartment complex at 23 Halifax Street, Lachlan’s Line. The defects, which are subject to a rectification order by Building Commission NSW issued to the developer, do not pose a risk to residents, but the media reports may have nevertheless caused unnecessary stress. Following my Mayoral Minute at the Extraordinary Council Meeting on 23 January, Council will provide impacted residents with helpful information in the form of notices and a staff contact for any queries. I will also be writing to the State Government asking that it put in place legislation for stronger building reform. Wings at Eastwood to close next month The bistro, located inside Eastwood Rugby Club, served both Australian and Chinese Cuisine for almost a decade. “With rising costs and other considerations we are sad to announce that we will officially be closing our doors after 9 years on February 25th,” Wings at Eastwood said in a statement. “We will be open as usual until then so please drop by for a last meal with us if you have time to do so. “It has been a wonderful journey and we look forward to seeing what the future holds.” One of our Wings’ most popular dishes was its ‘Sweet & Sour Snapper’ (pictured) which it described as being “crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside”. Seriously though, you don’t need a description to salivate over this dish - you just need the photo! City of Ryde honours 2024 Citizen and Young Citizen of the year Scouting legend Lyn Mann was named Citizen of the Year for her more than 30 years of service to the Ryde community, while Young Citizen of the Year Areg Grigorian was recognised for his ongoing commitment to volunteer work that began when he was just eight years old. City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM congratulated all 10 nominees in the Citizen of the Year category and the five nominees for Young Citizen of the Year. “We once again had some outstanding nominees in both the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year categories, and I want to thank them all for their service to our community,” he said. “They have all worked so hard – taking time out from families and friends – to make our City a better place and these awards give them much deserved recognition.” Citizen of the Year – Lyn Mann With more than 30 years of service to scouting in the City of Ryde, Lyn Mann has made a wonderful, positive impact on the lives of many young people in our area. Lyn began her scouting journey as the Joey Scout Leader at 1st East Ryde Scout Group, providing training in citizenship for young children. She was soon assisting new Joey Scout units in the district, encouraging and mentoring other adults to become leaders. Upon invitation, Lyn joined the Scouts NSW Training Team and prepared and delivered many weekend workshops for new leaders, who were able to gain nationally accredited certificates in management and leadership from the Scouts Australia Institute of Training. Lyn eventually became the Sydney North Region, then NSW State Commissioner for Joey Scouts, providing support and training activities for Joey Scouts and leaders over a wide area. A few years ago, Lyn returned to the role of Joey Scout Leader at East Ryde and she continues to provide vital training and activities young boys and girls in our local area. Her contribution to the adult leader team is invaluable and, with over 150 members, 1st East Ryde Scout Group is now one of the largest and most successful scout groups in NSW. Lyn continues to mentor new leaders in other scout groups around Ryde, assisting them to implement the program and develop their own leadership skills. Young Citizen of the Year – Areg Grigorian Areg Grigorian was only eight years old when he decided he wanted to drive some positive change in the City of Ryde. After witnessing his younger brother being injured in a bicycle accident at Yamble Reserve, Areg wrote to Council asking for changes in how bike pathways were shared with pedestrians. Following several follow up phone calls the Walk, Ride, Share campaign was launched, creating a safer environment for residents and visitors to Ryde. Areg’s commitment to his community didn’t stop there. In 2018, he ran the ‘Kids Bringing a Smile in a Bag’ Christmas appeal within the North Ryde community and as a volunteer First Aider at community sporting events, Areg has treated several injured athletes providing comfort, treatment and relief as needed. Areg’s ongoing commitment and services in the State Emergency Service, which he joined at 16, help the community and residents in times of distress. In his final year of a Bachelor of Paramedicine degree at Charles Sturt University, he is now looking at making a career out of helping other people. The Council resolved to publish on its website “the impacts of the defects and where residents can find adequate support and resources to support their right to a safe home.” Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM will also write to the State Min- ister for Planning Paul Scully to raise concern in regard to the planned 8,000 apartments in Macquarie Park to be created in a short period of time which, it councillors fear, could lead to “similar risks” for the community. City of Ryde will also prepare a report for the Council on the number of residents and businesses potentially affected by this issue as well as investigate who was advised of this issue at the City of Ryde and if this information was passed on to the CEO and the Mayor. Ryde councillors held an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday, January 23 to deal with community concerns about a structurally damaged building in Macquarie Park that was revealed on the front page of last week’s edition. ☐ Greenland Australia’s ‘nbh at Lachlan’s Line’ development is among several Macquarie Park developments that are the subject of concerns BREAKFAST POINT 21/5 Woodlands Avenue, 3B, Apartment $2,015,000 (23 Jan 24) Dylan Choe, Morton Newington CARLINGFORD 50/1-11 Donald Street, 1B, 114m2 , Apartment $568,000 (24 Jan 24) Annie Zeng, Uniland Epping 177/10 Thallon Street, 3B, Apartment $880,000 (11 Jan 24) Eddie Lee, MLL Invest Sydney CONCORD WEST 17/3-5 Concord Avenue, 3B, 163m2 , Townhouse $1,205,000 (24 Jan 24) Alessio Scivetti, Horwood Nolan Concord DUNDAS 2/20-22 Dora Crescent, 3B, 211m2 , Townhouse $1,220,000 (22 Jan 24) Majd Jerjees, Melrose Ryde EASTWOOD 74A Rutledge Street, 5B, 367m2 , Duplex $2,650,000 (28 Jan 24) Andy Lin, Uniland Epping 6/11-13 Clanalpine Street, 2B, Villa $1,480,000 (15 Jan 24) Jenny Qi Zhang, Raine&Horne Carlingford EPPING 1/69 Oxford Street, 2B, 115.1m2 , Apartment $820,000 (29 Jan 24) Russell Sheffield, Belle Property Hornsby 23/2 Seven Street, 3B, Apartment $960,000 (26 Jan 24) Francis Zhang, 100% Sold Chatswood 39/42-50 Cliff Road, 1B, Apartment $540,000 (19 Jan 24) Kevin Wong, Ray White Epping ERMINGTON 19 Atkins Road, 3B, 720m2 , House $2,300,000 (27 Jan 24) Ahmad Malas, Melrose Ryde GLADESVILLE 70 Osgathorpe Road, 3B, 332m2 , House $2,200,000 (29 Jan 24) John Paranchi, McGrath Hunters Hill 605/8 Wharf Road, 1B, Studio $470,000 (29 Jan 24) Robert Cassidy, Cassidy Gladesville LANE COVE 180/25 Best Street, 3B, Unit $1,700,000 (25 Jan 24) Tim Holgate, Belle Lane Cove 19/120 Burns Bay Road, 2B, Unit $865,000 (25 Jan 24) Oscar Nicholls, Raine & Horne Lane Cove LEICHHARDT 9 Bungay Street, 3B, 200m2 , Townhouse $1,690,000 (25 Jan 24) James Price, Hudson McHugh Leichhardt 19 Thornley Street, 2B, House $1,650,000 (25 Jan 24) James Montano, Montano Leichhardt 2/38 Foster Street, 2B, 96m2 , Apartment $1,180,000 (24 Jan 24) James Montano, Montano Leichhardt 22 Rofe Street, 2B, House $1,565,000 (18 Jan 24) Michael Catalano, True Property Leichhardt 201/35A Upward Street, 2B, Apartment $1,000,000 (9 Jan 24) Jack Williams, Village Property Sydney 507/24a George Street, 2B, 108m2 , Apartment $979,000 (8 Jan 24) Raby Shui Yee Tam, Elders Enfield MACQUARIE PARK 47/2 Leisure Close, 1B, Apartment $472,500 (25 Jan 24) Ben Boutros, Ray White North Ryde B1810/82, Waterloo Road 3B, Apartment $1,605,000 (24 Jan 24) Paul Liao, TRG Chatswood MARSFIELD 28A Dan Street, 4B, 306.4m2 , Duplex $2,380,000 (28 Jan 24) Andy Lin, Uniland Epping 131/94-116 Culloden Road, 4B, Townhouse $1,600,000 (15 Jan 24) Ashritha Mani, Agency 1 North Ryde 12/10-12 Edensor Street, 3B, Unit $870, 000 (10 Jan 24) Kevin Wong, Ray White Epping OATLANDS 35 York Street, 3B, 1,031m2 , House $2,375,000 (23 Jan 24) Ramez Riad, Hunters Parramatta RHODES 729/60 Walker Street, 3B, 143m2 , Apartment $1,100,000 (15 Jan 24) Recent local property sales* Yichao Yu, SPGR Girraween RYDE 20 Acacia Avenue, 4B, 607m2 , House $2,401,000 (29 Jan 24) Michael Dowling, Pello Gladesville 4/2 Hatton Street, 2B, Apartment $618,000 (25 Jan 24) Robert Bagala, McGrath Ryde RYDALMERE 14/1 Calder Road, 2B, 52m2 , Apartment $502,000 (22 Jan 24) Matthew Formosa, Belle Property Parramatta STRATHFIELD 7/11-13 Manson Road, 2B, Townhouse $1,100,000 (16 Jan 24) Qiuyan Tu, Elders Enfield (* This is not an exhaustive listing of local sales and represents only a sample of those reported)

Wednesday 31 January, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 15 Football legend is Parramatta Citizen of the Year Julie Crane helped transform the Melrose Park Football Club into a vibrant hub of inclusivity for newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan, providing them with an opportunity to play football and a sense of belonging. She also led the ‘Street Football World Cup’, bringing together players from diverse backgrounds with a shared love for the world game. “Being nominated for an award such as this is reward enough and I am very humbled by the recognition,” she said. “I believe sport is for everyone and truly brings communities together and I have always aimed to help that along the way.” Julie was honoured at a Australia Day Eve ceremony at Parramatta Park, alongside local volunteer Nass Aoun, who was awarded Young Citizen of the Year (in honour of David Shakespeare OAM) for his work in assisting people who are homeless. Ronda Gaffey from the Parramatta and District Historical Society and the Parramatta Female Factory Friends, was named the Senior Citizen of the Year, while Support Or- ganisations for Homeless and Asylum Seekers took out the Community Group Award. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber praised the award winners. “Parramatta is the heart of greater Sydney, known for its diverse, inclusive and supportive community, and that has been shown perfectly in the Citizen of the Year award recipients,” he said. A community football legend who helped refugees integrate into Australian society through sport is Parramatta’s Citizen of the Year. ☐ City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber is pictured with Citizen of the Year Julie Crane. Hunters Hill billionaire Lang Walker passes away The co-founder of Walker Corporation, the 78 year old developer passed away peacefully on Saturday evening in his Woolloomooloo unit surrounded by his family. Mr Walker co-founded the Walker Corporation 60 years ago with his late father, which specialised in earth-moving, excavation and quarrying, before it diversified into property development. Recently, the Walker Corporation had a major role in the development of the $3.5 billion Parramatta Square and the Rhodes residential development. The company also carried out more than 1,200 projects across Australia. “Lang Walker transformed a humble family firm into a company whose name and work is recognised internationally,” Premier Minns said in a statement. “His enormous legacy can be seen across New South Wales and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber also paid tribute to Mr Walker. “Lang Walker understood the potential of Parramatta to be a major global city before most others,’’ he said. “Parramatta Square is one of his many legacies to Parramatta and this world-class civic and commercial precinct is now home to more than 24,000 workers and it is a magnet for government and industry leaders to move their Sydney offices to Parramatta.’’ In the past 20 years, Mr Walker donated around $2.5 million to political parties and supported charitable work. The Walker Corporation said Mr Walker was one of the first developers to creatively tackle the challenge of urban transformation. “Lang’s vision will remain an enduring force through the Walker DNA and the Walker Way which he actively passed on and it is embedded in our culture and our modus operandi,” managing director and chief executive officer David Gallant said. Mr Walker is survived by his wife Sue, three children and 10 grandchildren. Premier Chris Minns has paid tribute to the late Lang Walker of Crescent Street in Hunters Hill. Football Australia commences phase two to identify more clubs for National Second Tier In an effort to identify an additional two to four clubs to join the eight foundation clubs announced last November, Football Australia is extending an invitation to clubs, which previously submitted an NST Expression of Interest (EOI) in 2023, to engage in the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase. This initiative is integral to the NST’s inception, with the league set to kick off its inaugural season in March/April 2025. “Today marks another significant milestone in the evolution of the National Second Tier as we invite 24 clubs to engage in the Request for Proposal phase and potentially join the eight foundation clubs announced last year,” James Johnson, CEO of Football Australia, said. The eight foundation clubs already confirmed are APIA Leichhardt FC, Avondale FC, Marconi Stallions FC, Preston Lions FC, South Melbourne FC, Sydney Olympic FC, Sydney United 58 FC, and Wollongong Wolves FC. The clubs were selected following a robust process which has preceded the NST RFP 2024 process. “The RFP phase is a cornerstone in our journey towards a more dynamic and com- petitive National Second Tier as we look for clubs which will elevate the game, contribute to their communities, and embody the spirit of inclusivity and excellence,” added Johnson. The selection process will be rigorous, and evaluate each club’s football development plans, community engagement strategies, financial stability, and overall contribution to Australian football. “This is an unprecedented opportunity for clubs to step into the spotlight and showcase their vision for not only contributing to the growth of the National Second Tier but also for shaping the future of football in Australia,” Johnson stated. The final selection of clubs will happen after the conclusion of the RFP phase further enriching the inaugural NST season. Depending on the final number of clubs, the season will feature either a 10-team or a 12- team home and away competition, followed by a competitive Finals Series. Upon receiving the RFP materials and fol- lowing a thorough briefing session, the clubs must confirm their intent to submit a propos- al and will have until mid-April to finalise their submissions. To find out more about the NST applica- tion process, please visit the NST Applica- tion Process section of the Football Australia website. Football Australia has announced the commencement of the next phase in the application process for the National Second Tier (NST) competition. realeSTaTe&FINaNCe ☐ Lang Walker of Hunters Hill.

Ryde Eastwood_Weekly Press Ad_30 Jan_2024.indd 1 30/01/2024 10:20:49 AM 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2024 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tiger revolution powers on! Winger David Nofoalu- ma is the latest player to exit the club with only Alex Twal, Adam Doue- ihi and Asu Kepaoa remaining from the 2020 pre-season. All of the 25 players used in the 2019 sea- son have also left and we’ve had four coaches - Michael Maguire, Brett Kimmorley, Tim Sheens and now Benji Marshall - since Ivan Cleary left us to coach his baby boy Nathan at the Panther Pets in 2018. The revolutionary changes impact on all levels of the club with a recent overhaul of the Board and the appointment of interim CEO Shane Richardson leading a new look leadership team that includes for- mer Premier Barry O’Farrell as interim chairman and new representatives from the Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs. The Tigers have also splashed the cash to bring in big name stars which include the multi-million dollar sign- ings of the NSW Blues’ Fainu brothers, fiveeighth Latu and prop Samuela from the Silvertails. Another multi-million dollar signing is the Pan- ther Pets megastar and halves sensation Jarome Luai who joins us on a five-year deal worth six million dollars. Only the Hush Puppies The Tigers revolution powers on with our club on the verge of replacing its entire NRL squad in the space of five years. ☐ Eastwood’s Adam Doueihi is one of three players remaining from the 2020 pre-season. can match us when it comes to new signings and they’ve spent considerably less on players that don’t come with the same accolades. Coach Benji Marshall has also thrown his full support behind the Path- ways Development program which produced 2023 Player Of The Year, fullback Jahream Bula and hooker Tallyn Da Silva while lock forward Kit Laulilii is tipped for a stel- lar representative future. The complete overhaul of the playing roster is proof - if proof were needed - of Benji’s de- sire to sign the players he wants and a stamp of his authority of the first grade NRL team. The Tigers have also scrapped the experi- mental Leadership Team concept to fully back Api Koroisau as captain in a decision I wholeheartedly applaud. Insiders at the club tell me not to underestimate the importance of our first full season at the now complete Zurich Centre of Excellence in Concord with its stateof-the-art fitness and training equipment. Benji is certainly put- ting his Tigers through their paces at pre-season training and hopes the team can avoid the freak injuries - like Api’s broken jaw - that saw us go into games last year with a roster missing a number of star performers. Benji said he’s “not a big believer in what happened last season will happen again” and stressed that players who “go into matches thinking they will be hard games or easy games are going to get beat”. The Tigers start the 2024 season with a pre-season challenge game against the Kiwis at Apollo Projects Sta- dium, Christchurch on Sunday, February 18 at 2pm. On Saturday, February 24 the Tigers play the Sinners at Glen Willow Stadium in Mudgee at 8pm. See ya there.
