WIN, WIN, WIN with TWT! Father Martin’s Musings The wisdom in a story Recently someone sent me this story that is probably highly exaggerated yet reveals a great message about human tolerance. A Protestant parish situated in a bayside suburb was given a new minister for the first time the minister and it was a woman. Her name was Gayleen, a parish elder Eddie was not happy with this appointment as he believed it was to be a job only for a man. Whether the man was the best person for the position was for Eddie not relevant. Another parish elder Matthew encouraged Eddie to give Gayleen a fair go so he suggested that they take her out fishing so to at least get to know her, Eddie reluctantly agreed. When they were all in the boat about two hundred metres out from the wharf the men realised, they left their fishing tackle on the wharf so immediately Gayleen hopped over the side of the boat and walked on the water to collect the fishing tackle. Eddie was still not impressed and said to Matthew; “I knew she was unsuitable as she can’t even swim!” Jesus of Nazareth had something to say about being unreasonable in these words; “Judge not and you will not be judged.” (Mat- thew Chapter 7, Verse 1) Fr Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital Chaplain in Sydney. When people share stories, they provide a vital medium of revealing our human condition. So many religious and life truths are conveyed in books such as the Torah, the Koran and the Bible. Firefighters worked for more than an hour to bring the fire under control, preventing significant damage to the shed while crews that specialise in hazardous materials used materials on-site to reduce firefighting water run-off. The Port Authority will monitor the situation and experts from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit will work with police to determine how the fire started. The Weekly Times campaigned against the demolition which went ahead as part of the Powerhouse Museum rebuild and with promises the 1870 landmark would be rebuilt at another location. This week the Minns Government revealed that no money had been put aside to rebuild Willow Grove by the previous government and building it again from scratch would be an act of fake heritage. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 September, 2023 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles LETTERS to the Editor Hunters Hill Guest Column TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Community sport at its best in our classic rugby season The Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club - a proud and ancient club - took on the men from the Blue Mountains in the Sydney Suburban Division One Grand Final. While the Blue Mountains team were triumphant (44-40) it was the men of Hunters Hill - wearing their famous black and white hoops - that did the inner west proud. As has been the case all year, this team of fine local young men played their hearts out as they represented their community. They took the game to the wire - and were gracious in defeat. They are a class act! This is the beauty of grassroots community sport. The players don’t play for money or fame - they play for fun and mateship. They play in front of their family and friends. They represent all of us in the local community. They literally play for Hunters Hill! And this is the true value of community sport. On Saturday last week the most captivating game of community sport unfolded at the revitalised Concord Oval. To The POINT By Luke McCormack of Hunters Hill Bringing together youth and experience to play sport in its purest form and simply for the love of the game. In a season that starts in January and ends nine months later, the members of the club come together every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to play for their community. They learn key skills like patience, discipline, trust and loyalty and all the while they are being part of something bigger. It is a considerable investment of time and emotion but the dividend for all of us is huge. The local community should be immensely proud of the men and women that play for the ‘Hillies’. They are blessed to have a home at Boronia Park and a community that loves them. And despite the disappointment of last Saturday’s game these fine young players are already committing to do it all again in 2024. Thanks to everyone in our great community for your support - we look forward to entertaining you again next year! FACTA NON VERBA! Luke McCormack is President of Hunters Hill Rugby Club Going solar The latest project that Council has undertaken towards achieving this goal is installing solar panels at Town Hall. Not only will it reduce our carbon footprint in line with our sustainability targets but it will also assist in achieving energy efficiency for the organisation. Solar panels are a great initiative for our municipality as it is projected to reduce our annual energy consumption by a quarter each year and in turn, result in important savings. By investing in projects like this one we are taking proactive steps to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for everyone in Hunters Hill. It’s an important step towards meeting our set targets and I look forward to continuing our efforts on reducing emissions and implementing other sustainability measures in the future. Celebrating our citizens This Sunday (17 September) is Australian Citizenship Day - a day of pride and celebration for those who have chosen to call the lucky country their home. In recognition of this special occasion, our Council will be welcoming new citizens to Australia through a Citizenship Ceremony this Sunday (17 September) on Australian Citizenship Day at 11am in the Town Hall. It is one of my greatest joys in the role as Mayor and remains an honour to preside over these ceremonies and receive pledges from members of our community in their final step to becoming an Australian Citizen. We welcome participants, their family and Our Council are working to ensure our operations and services are efficient, cost-effective and in line with our communities objectives – including a commitment to a renewable energy target of 100 percent by 2030. friends and the broader community to take part in the ceremony and in this year’s celebration of Australian Citizenship Day. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Dear Sir, The Salvation Army is one of the biggest providers of social services in Australia. We are a pragmatic movement, not really into empty gestures or performative virtue signalling. I don’t think in our 140-year history in Australia that we have ever been called “elites”. But we do support the Voice. We support the Voice, simply, because we believe it will make a difference. For 140 years, the Salvos have rolled up their sleeves and helped where we can. We started small by assisting discharged prisoners at the prison gates in Melbourne and now we provide over 2,000 services across every state and territory in Australia. We support people experiencing homelessness, family and domestic violence, financial hardship, unemployment, substance use disorders, social isolation and loneliness, and help them recover from natural disasters. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are over-represented in almost every service we deliver – and that’s why we support a Voice. There is no escaping the fact that what we are doing right now, as a nation, is not working. The Salvos will always do what we can on the ground, but the issues we see are deeper; they are structural and systemic. We believe the only way to practically adThe Voice will make difference dress the hardship experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is to change how the government makes and carries out policy. We believe the best way to do that is to actually listen to the people affected – to give them a voice. Not everyone agrees with us on this and that’s okay. We just ask that people respectfully consider, before they decide on October 14: “Will the Voice make a difference for people who really need help?” We think the answer is a resounding yes. CAPTAIN STUART GLOVER The Salvation Army Australia The Voice explained Dear Sir, At last a politician, Jerome Laxale (Member for Bennelong) is going to explain The Voice! See you all on Friday, September 15 at 6.30pm at Macquarie University (Building G03) at #1 Wally’s Walk. Please, no ‘Where’s Wally?’ jokes, just bring lots of questions for Jerome and his guest, Thomas Mayo. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Hunter’s Hill Council votes on Montefiore proposal The proposal is for several new blocks of independent living units, with residential towers at the centre of the existing site to be up to six storeys high. It will require changes in the Local Environment Plan for the residential area to allow for buildings of this height. The recommendation in a business paper to be presented to councillors at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Council (Tuesday, September 12) states: “It is recommended that Council forward the Planning Proposal to the Department of Planning and Environment seeking a Gateway Determination.” It goes on to note that should a Gateway Determination be received, it is recommended that the Planning Proposal documentation be updated As we go to press, Hunters Hill Councillors will vote on whether or not to send a proposed development by Montefiore Aged Care in Boronia Park to the State Government for Gateway Determination. prior to public exhibition. “Following public exhibition and completion of all relevant requirements of the Gateway Determination, the Planning Proposal and draft DCP would be reported to Council for further consideration.” The recommendation further notes that: “The proponent has indicated that they are open to negotiating with Council with regard to public benefits through Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA), however, to date no such offer or negotiations have taken place.” The Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association is opposed to the current proposal and warns it will set a precedent where several other aged care centres in Hunters Hill will seek the same rezoning to permit similar developments. Although the Association also warns that rezoning will have a negative impact on the character of Hunters Hill, it is not opposed to a smaller and more limited development at Montefiore. Senator Marise Payne retires “For more than two and half decades, Marise Payne has been an exemplar of public service,” NSW Liberal Party President Jason Falinski said. “She has always been someone who stood up for her principles, always working hard to make our state, our nation and our Party better.” Entering parliament in 1997, Senator Payne has had a very distinguished and successful career as a Liberal Senator for New South Wales. The longest serving female Senator in Australia’s history, she has served in public office for more than 25 years, including as the Minister for Human Services, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Women, and the first female Minister for Defence. As a senior member of Coalition Governments, she oversaw the delivery of major policies and reforms including the delivery of a Defence White Paper and the creation of a $200 billion defence materiel program; the historic AUKUS partnership; close Quad partnership with US, India and Japan; the largest ever investment in the relationship with our Pacific neighbours; and Australia becoming the only nation with diplomatic representation in every country member of the Pacific Island Forum. A member of the Liberal Party since 1982, she was the National Young Liberal Movement’s first female President, after serving as a political adviser to some of the most significant figures in Liberal politics of their time. Senator Marise Payne has announced she will retire from Parliament at the end of this month. ☐ Senator Marise Payne

The limousine is then followed by vibrant marching bands, dance groups, cultural performers and festival floats. City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM said the Granny Smith Festival is a must-see event and he encouraged ev- eryone to mark down the day in their diaries. “From humble beginnings, the festival has grown to be the biggest annual event in our wonderfully diverse City and continues to delight people of all ages and backgrounds,” he said. “It’s a true representation of our harmonious, welcoming community and no one does it better when it comes to putting on a party.” The festival made a triumphant return in 2022 after two years of COVID cancellations, with an estimated 100,000 people flocking to the streets and parks of Eastwood to take part in it. ☐ Pop star Ricki-Lee. Ryde’s Armenian community devastated by Artsakh plight Human rights groups and Armenian associations are increasingly reporting this grim statistic in Artsakh where food, medicine and other aid from Armenia continues to be blocked on the only access way into the enclave - the Lachin Corridor - by socalled eco-protestors from hostile neighbouring Azerbaijan. Mayor Yedelian OAM recently denounced the eco-protestors as Azeri security agents and told The Weekly Times he has received distressing stories from Artsakh as the supply shortage reaches a crisis point. “Many people in our local community are getting reports from Artsakh and they are devastated,’’ he said. “The death toll (from starvation and a lack of medical supplies) is mostly among the elderly and (sick) people without people to care for them but we’re also receiving reports of young children suffering.” He said the blockade has prevented many Artsakh residents from returning home from Armenia, which was this week attacked by Azeri forces with at least three Armenian soldiers killed and others wounded. Ryde’s Sister City is Artsakh’s capital Stepanakert and the Mayor has launched an appeal to lift the blockade and airlift aid into Stepanakert. His action comes as hundreds of Armenian speaking residents from Ryde marched through the CBD last week to denounce the blockade as a genocide. “We have a genocide right in front of our very eyes,’’ Mayor Yedelian OAM said. “It is ethnic cleansing.” Azerbaijan and Turkey rejects this although the Azeri side refuses to recognise Artsakh’s independence. To donate to the Mayor of Ryde’s appeal for Artsakh visit the website: www.armenianreliefsociety.com.au Starvation and lack of medical supplies is the third leading cause of death in the blockaded Armenian enclave of Artsakh, City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM confirmed this week. ☐ Ryde’s Armenian community stands in solidarity with Artsakh. North Sydney MP felt “unsafe” during debate “Like being in the middle of a mob” “Following a vote, a male opposition member shouted abuse at me as he returned to his seat,’’ she said. “His tone was hostile and his body language was aggressive.” It is reported the unnamed MP yelled “Where were you today then? You say you want clear answers. Where were you?” Ms Tink did not retaliate but has since called out this type of behaviour. “The behaviour not only left me feeling ashamed of the way my workplace was being represented, but also ultimately unsafe,” she said. “If I could have left I would have but ironically, exiting the chamber during Question Time is deemed unacceptable. “It’s instances like these that makes being in the Chamber sometimes feel like being in the middle of a mob.” The North Sydney MP has since raised the issue in Question Time. “This week I stood up to call out inappropriate behaviour during Question Time, as members from across the chamber yelled at each other using volatile, condescending and North Sydney independent MP Kylea Tink says she felt “unsafe” during a recent Question Time debate in Federal Parliament when she copped verbal abuse from an unnamed opposition MP. ☐ Kylea Tink MP offensive language,’’ she said. Ms Tink said voters have every right to be appalled by politicians behaving badly. “How can we expect our community to act with patience, tolerance and mutual respect when, if they watched Question Time, they would have seen behaviour that is so far from those ideals that it was almost laughable.” Taxpayer funded junkets are also on her agenda for change. “The government continues to withhold important details about ministers’ travel expenses, but who’s on which taxpayer-funded flights is something there should be transparency around,’’ she said. “Truth and transparency are not just things that should be expected when it’s easy and I will continue to push for more government transparency.” The film Aurora’s Sunrise will be screened today (Wednesday, September 13) from 11am and this Saturday, September 16 at 6.30pm. Ararat Uncovered will be screened on Sunday, September 17 at 4.30pm. Aurora’s Sunrise tells the story of a genocide survivor who becomes a Hollywood silent movie star and Ararat Uncovered is a travel extravaganza that lures its star Kev Orkian to the biblical Mount Ararat and to the historic Western Armenian towns of Ani and Van. Both films are part of the 2023 Armenian Film Festival. Co-founders and Co-directors of the Armenian Film Festival, Margaret Chater and Hourie Demirjian said they are proud to welcome back the Armenian Film Festival for a seventh year. “Each year, we are overwhelmed with the quality and story-telling of the films we show- case and this year in particular, we take great pride in embracing and sharing our Armenian history and heritage with all Australians,” they said. Two Armenian films are being screened at Event Cinemas in Top Ryde this week. ☐ Aurora’s Sunrise has been nominated for an Academy Award. ☐ Pictured, l to r, Ryde MP Jordan Lane; Margaret Chater; Hourie Demirjian; Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale; and Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM at the opening of the Armenian Film Festival at Event Cinemas in Top Ryde Two Armenian tales in Top Ryde

6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 September, 2023 NSW Government progresses plans for new Macquarie Park school Once completed, the new Midtown Macquarie Park public school will cater for 750 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in contemporary facilities, marks an important investment in public education as the Macquarie Park area’s primary school student projections are forecast to triple by 2041. “The Minns Labor Government is focused on delivering this important project, after the growing demand for schools in Macquarie Park was not met by the former Liberal and National Government,” the NSW Government said in a statement. “To get this project underway, the Minns Labor Government has worked on completing planning and design to lodge the project’s State Significant Development (SSD) application, including consulting with the community and finalising the schematic design. “The plans will be lodged on Tuesday, September 12.” The design includes a rooftop play area created with the input of teachers, maximising play and outdoor space with a rooftop active area, a running track, a perimeter net for ball games, table settings and performance stage. THE MINNS Labor Government is pushing ahead with plans for a new high-quality primary school in Macquarie Park. ☐ Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, with local teacher - and Labor candidate for Ryde at March’s state election - Lyndal Howison. ☐ An aerial image showing Midtown’s location and, right, another artist impression of the proposed multi-level school Plans for new school lodged and community consultation process commenced yesterday By Anthony Stavrinos The ground floor of the school will include a multipurpose hall with court markings for sport, a covered outdoor learning area (COLA), a climbing wall and a natural school garden. There are also play areas on each of the school’s teaching levels. “It is so important Macquarie Park has the educational facilities it needs to allow this growing community to flourish,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said. “I am thrilled to see plans for this new public school progressing, and I cannot wait to see this new school project completed. “This community was promised the world by the Liberals and Nationals, who failed year after year to deliver the school this community needs.” Federal Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale said it was great to see the Minns Labor Government making progress on the Midtown Macquarie Park school. “This is a rapidly-growing area with future projections for major demand for school places, so this project is urgently needed,” he said. “This school will be such a welcome addition to the Macquarie Park community and will en- sure future generations and families have access to a high quality public education.” The school also features brand new classrooms, administration and staff facilities, a canteen, a multipurpose hall, a library, covered and landscaped outdoor learning areas and plantings throughout the site. Students also have easy access sports fields and open public parkland including Wilga Park and Shrimptons Creek. Labor said this week it would invest $3.5 billion over four years to deliver a massive pipeline of more than 60 new and upgraded public schools in Sydney’s rapidly growing western suburbs, and tackle a school infrastructure backlog. But the NSW Opposition said the Minns Labor Government was “once again claiming credit for the Coalition’s work”. Opposition Leader Mark Speakman said Labor was reaping the rewards of the groundwork put in place by the Liberals and Nationals, with several of the schools already in the development stage. “Most of these projects were only made possible by the planning and funding set aside by the former Government, but the Government is yet again trying to claim ideas that aren’t theirs,” Mr Speakman said.” “By the Government’s own admission, $3 billion of today’s announcement is from the last Budget delivered by the Liberals and Nationals. “Proof of this includes the fact that construction began in 2022 for the new high school at Wentworth Point and work started at Gulyangarri Primary School in Liverpool before Labor was elected.” He said during its time in government, the Liberals and Nationals had delivered $9.1b in new and upgraded schools since 2017, with an additional $8.6b in the pipeline for future projects. “So that is more than $17.7 billion worth of school infrastructure across the state,” he said. Shadow Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said today’s announcement lacks detail and transparency. “To say we didn’t invest in school infrastructure is another blatant Labor lie, especially considering only $500m of their announcement is supposedly ‘new’ money”, Ms Mitchell said. Labor said the investment in Western Sydney schools was $500 million higher than the former Liberal National government’s budget for the area. The capital unlocked in next week’s budget would fund primary schools: near Sydney Olympic Park; and in Gables; Melonba; Nirimba Fields; Tallawong; Gregory Hills; and Liverpool (Gulyangarri Public School). Funding would also be made available for high schools in: Melrose Park; Wentworth Point; Melonba; Schofields and Tallawong; Jordan Springs; Gledswood Hills and Gregory Hills; Leppington and Denham Court; and Edmondson Park. Labor said it would also upgrade school at: Dundas, Austral, Cecil Hills, Condell Park, Eagle Vale, Kingswood, Leppington, Northmead and The Ponds.

8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 September, 2023 Spectacular Spring weather as big crowds flock to popular school fetes On Sunday, the Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale (pictured below), was having a dunkin’ good time as he felt the full force of a bucket full of water drenching him, all in the name of fundraising for St Charles school, one of the most cherished schools in the local area. The event was sponsored by McGrath Ryde, whose principal Robert Bagala along with several of his team members, were former St Charles students. On Saturday night, Eastwood Heights Public School staged its annual Fireworks Spectacular fundraiser with food stalls, market stalls, games and entertainment, rides and of course, a fireworks finale. Ryde’s St Charles Catholic School and Eastwood Heights Public School held their popular annual fundraisers over the weekend, with the excited screams from children and the buzz of large crowds at both events, confirming both were spectacular successes. ☐ Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale gets dunked ☐ Ryde MP Jordan Lane and Mitch Tracey serve up some flavoured ice at the Eastwood Heights PS Fireworks Spectacular; and, right a baby girls takes in all the day’s fun with her ‘Super Dad’. It will create a legacy for professional women’s football in Australia and build on the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. “We want to create the best elite pathway in women’s football and provide a clear vision for the best young female footballers to transition into a professional career,” Sydney FC Chairman Scott Barlow said. “Young, talented girls should have the same opportunities as boys to play football professionally and we are committed to developing the next Sky Blues and Matildas. “It is clear what an enormous impact the Women’s World Cup had on our country and it is vital we invest in the development of future generations of female footballers.” The elite pathway begins at the new Sky Blues Female Training Program, which leads into the Sydney FC Development Squad before selection in the Sydney FC A-League Women’s team. The Female Training Program (FTP) is split into two separate training programs based out of Sydney FC’s training base of Sky Park in Macquarie Park and Sutherland Shire in the south. Talented girls aged between 11-13-years-old can express an interest to join the FTP and potentially be selected to become part of the Sydney FC Development Squad. The Development Squad consists of girls aged 14-16 with players being scouted through FTP and competition games at local clubs. They will train twice per week at Sky Park working closely with the Liberty A-League Women’s squad and opening the door to sign professional contracts at Sydney FC. Current Matildas and Sydney FC forward Cortnee Vine says the program will give the club and the national squads more chance of future success. “The Women’s World Cup showed us what we can do without pathways such as this, so imagine what we can do with it?” she said. “It will be of enormous benefit to Sydney FC and the Matildas, with more chance of success in the future. “It’s also hugely important to give young girls the best opportunity of a professional career in football which is what this will provide.” Chief Executive Officer Adam Santo was also on hand alongside Cortnee Vine and former Sydney FC Captain, Teresa Polias to make the announcement for the Female Football Pathway. Teresa will be the Pathway’s Ambassador and she says it’s an extremely important step to ensure the continued success of the game. “Increased opportunities for professional training between the ages of 11 and 16 will lead to more girls staying in the game, creating greater competition and better players,” she said. “It’s common practice in many countries around the world so it’s important we don’t fall behind, particularly given the recent in interest and surge in Memberships in the Liberty A-League.” The pathway’s structure has been set up after extensive negotiations with all stakeholders and agreement reached that the program is the best framework for the future of women’s football. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 September, 2023 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Jahream got some big wraps from The One-Eyed Tiger this season and it is no surprise he was voted the Tigers’ Players’ Player and Rookie of the Year. We also gave some big wraps to our captain courageous Api Koroisau and the Kelly-Barnes Medal vote-count went right down to the final match of the season with Jahream and Api level on 22 votes prior to the last round game against the Silvertails. Jahream claimed three points in this game (to Api’s two) to clinch the stellar award. Our 21-year-old fullback scored five tries in 18 NRL appearances this season and prevented countless four-pointers as the last line of defence including a famous try-saver in our 12 points to eight victory over the Panther Pets in Bathurst. He played the full 80 minutes in every NRL appearance and averaged a club record 159.1 running metres per game with a season high of 245 metres against the Faders in Round 14. Jahream is also an absolute pleasure to have at the club, Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe reckons. He said he holds strong values and worked hard for everything he achieved. We think there should be a TWT One-Eyed-Tiger Award and it should go to our loyal fans who once again proved we are the best supported club, both home and away. Thanks for your support for my weekly column and for watching our games on the big screens at Club Ryde and the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. In other awards, the Tigers premiership winning prop and now Senior Partnerships Executive, John Skandalis, was named Club Person of the Year for his outstanding commitment and contribution. The Wayne Pearce Community Award went to our backline star Brent Naden. Centre Triston Reilly (24) was named Player of the Year in the NSW Cup, after scoring 14 tries in 19 appearances. Second row Jack Boyling was voted as the NSW Cup team’s Players’ Player and in the Jersey Flegg Cup, centre Sione Vaihu was named the Player of the Year. Centre Josh Feledy is one of three 18 year-olds to join the NRL side this season and picked up the Jersey Flegg Players’ Player Award. Former Pommie import Gareth Ellis has been inducted as a Tigers Life Member, taking the number of Life Members to 27. Ellis played 75 games across four seasons for us and was Player of the Year three seasons in a row. Justin also thanked halfback Luke Brooks who, he said, had given his all for our club over 11 seasons.
