2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 3 April, 2024 WIN WIN WIN with TWT Father Martin’s Musings Some Easter questions After some research I hope that these answers will be of value. Easter Sunday coincides with the first Sunday after the paschal full moon after the vernal equinox. The word equinox originally is a Latin word that refers to something being of equal or even and in this case, it is the amount of day and night in the northern hemisphere. It was the Council of Jerusalem in the year 231 that set the equinox on March 21 each year. So, from that year Easter Sunday could fall as early as March 22 and as late as April 25. Tradition has it that the word Easter comes from Eastre who was an ancient goddess of fertility and spring . It was the English Congregational minister J.S. Whale (1896- 1977) who wrote these profound words about the Easter event that recalls and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth; “The Gospels do not explain the resurrection rather it is the resurrection event that explains the Gospels. Belief in the resurrection is not an appendage of the Christian faith it IS the Christian faith.” The great enduring message of Easter I believe is so well put by Saint Paul of Tarsus in his letter to the Corinthians; “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. Then our preaching is empty, and we are false witnesses.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney Each year I am regularly asked this question; ‘Why does the day of Easter vary each year?’ WIN! a BACK TO BLACK double pass To WIN! simply visit our website - weeklytimes.com.au - and click on the ‘WIN with TWT’ tab and follow the instructions. Petition seeks tougher penalties The petition follows recent cases of vandalism in Woolwich and Longueville as well as on-going statewide concerns about waterfront land owners cutting down trees to improve waterfront views. “Help put pressure on the State Government by signing this petition which calls to legislate for much higher penalties for tree vandalism so that they adequately reflect the value of this critical natural asset, as well as requesting recognition of council trees as natural assets within the Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework,’’ the Society says in its April newsletter. “This issue is bigger than the recent dreadful vandalism in Longueville with reports of illegal tree killing and vandalism massively increasing.” Fines of up to one million dollars can be issued in cases of proven vandalism but conservationists argue this penalty could be worth the risk because the removal of public trees to create panoramic waterfront views can add more than a million dollars to the sale price of a waterfront property. The petition can be found and signed online at: www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/la/Pages/epetitions-list.aspx The Ryde-Hunters Hill Flora and Fauna Preservation Society has urged readers to sign a petition that calls for tougher penalties for public tree vandalism. Firefighters warn of battery risk There have been 64 lithium-ion battery related fires in New South Wales this year which include two fatalities. A home in Epping was gutted by a battery fire late last year. Fire and Rescue NSW attributed the double fatality at Teralba earlier this month to an overcharged battery that went into a “thermal runaway” incident. A thermal runaway occurs when a battery charger continues to pour energy into a lithium-ion battery after it has reached its full state of charge, which causes a faulty or damaged battery too ignite. “This appears to be what we have been fearing for a while now, a person or persons dying due to a lithium-ion battery-related fire,” FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said. “We continue to warn the community about the potential for these batteries to explode in flames.’’ One of the hazards with lithium-ion battery fires is the toxic smoke that is emitted, which can asphyxiate people before they have time to flee the home. Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said she is concerned about a spate of battery fires at recycling centres and landfill facilities and will introduce a stewardship scheme for responsible disposal. Fire and Rescue NSW has warned about the extreme fire risk of over- charging lithium-ion batteries. ☐ The Epping home gutted by a battery fire.

Support for Maggio Dear Sir, I want to express my unwavering support for Ryde independent councillor Roy Maggio in the upcoming popu- lar election for Mayor. Unlike the major polit- ical parties, Clr Maggio has consistently prior- itised the community’s needs and actively listened to our concerns. His bipartisan ap- proach, accessibility, and track record of getting things done make him the clear choice to repre- sent us. Let’s unite behind Clr Maggio for a brighter fu- ture for our community. BENJAMIN BROWN West Ryde Recalling our ANZAC stories Dear Sir, As ANZAC Day draws near those of us in the RSL turn our minds to the speeches that we give and the stories we might tell. This year I am telling the story of 75 Squadron RAAF and its valiant fight in defence of Port Moresby in March and April 1942. ANZAC Day is the most revered day in our calendar and we commemorate the deeds of the ANZACs and their incredible sacrifice. A short distance from North Ryde RSL is the grave of PO Lloyd Holliday, a 23-year-old husband and son. Lloyd lies in Macquarie Park Cemetery and was one of the first casualties of 75 Squadron which was formed in a hurry in March 1942. On the 15th February that year Singapore fell, four days later Darwin was bombed. One week later the RAAF were delivered 75 crated Kittyhawk Fighters to Sydney. Eighteen aircraft and 28 pilots formed the flying component of 75 Squadron, 174 ground staff supported that team. Only a few of the pilots had flown high performance aircraft because after two years of war, not one squadron of high-performance fighters existed to defend Australia. By March 7, the aircraft were serviceable but yet to be fitted with radios. The radios were in Townsville so the planes were to fly North. These pilots had little experience on the aircraft and three planes and two pilots were lost before they left NSW. Fifteen aircraft arrived in Townsville and prac- ticed until March 19 when they deployed to Port Moresby. Over the next 44 days, the squadron stood up to the Japanese, destroying 18 aircraft in the air and 17 on the ground. They put heart in the army at Port Moresby, but it cost 23 aircraft and 12 pilots and only one serviceable Kittyhawk flew out of Port Moresby on May 3 to reform the squadron in Townsville. Later, 75 Squadron along with 76 and 77 also flying Kittyhawks per- formed admirably in the SW Pacific. The Air Defence of Port Moresby by 75 Squadron is a proud story of Aus- tralians at war fighting in desperate times but also a warning to us. Time allows for training, for skills to be honed, spares to be accumu- lated and ammunition stockpiled. Supply Lines then as now are long and it was a bit of luck that those Kittyhawks were at sea in our area. Without them the sto- ry of Kokoda and New Guinea may have been very different. So, this ANZAC Day remember we have brave people to fly, sail and slog into battle but their chances will be much better if we make sensi- ble decisions now and have the equipment built and proven. If you want to know more this year North Ryde RSL Sub Branch is representing the RSL family at three services on the run up to and on ANZAC Day itself: * Macquarie Park Cem- etery on Thursday April 18 at 10.30am for 11am service at the RSL Me- morial in the grounds of cemetery. The service will be supported by the Army Reserve from Timor Barracks; * Northern Suburbs Me- morial Gardens on Satur- day April 20 at 10.30am for 11am service at the Waratah Gardens in the grounds of the Gardens. The service will feature the North Ryde Pipe and Drum Band; and * North Ryde RSL Dawn Service Parade on Thurs- day April 25 at 6.30am for the march off at 6.45am followed by a Service at the Memorial Garden out- side the Club. Afterwards the club will be open for gathering together in the spirit of camaraderie. Guest Speaker will be CDRE Peter Scott CSC, RAN Rtd. Hope the readers of this paper can come along. LCDR PETER COLTHORPE, RAN RTD President, North Ryde RSL Sub Branch Why are we making life hard for hospital staff? Dear Sir, First we hear that Concord Hospital is charging their staff up to $27 per week for the “privilege” of parking at work. Now I have heard that Senior Management are issuing Mental Health nurses with $92 infringement notices for parking in vacant hospital parking spaces on their designated shifts. During a time that the Health Department is struggling to fill all the vacancies, why are the bean counters so determined to make life even harder for their dedicated workforce at Concord Hospital? Wednesday 3 April, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 But Mayor Brown says he wants to make progress in areas including jobs and innovation, the culture of council and preserving green space. He was elected unopposed as the Mayor of the City of Ryde last month after protesting Labor councillors abstained from voting and Independent Clr Roy Maggio walked out of the council chambers. It was, however, the first time a councillor has been elected Mayor, unopposed, for more than 20 years, he told The Weekly Times. In his acceptance speech, Mayor Brown also thanked his family for their support and acknowledged the service of his wife’s Grandfather, Sir Ken Anderson and Great Grandfather, David Anderson, who both served as former Mayors of Ryde. “My priorities are to accelerate the growth of jobs and innovation in the Macquarie Park,” he said. “I believe we can work with the business community to increase the number of jobs in Macquarie Park, and strengthen the positioning of Macquarie Park as a centre of Science and Innovation excellence.” He said this would also benefit Council by creating additional revenue streams, additional employment and benefit all residents of Ryde. “The culture of our Council also needs to change so that Councillors are considered to be respected civic leaders of our community,” Mayor Brown said. “The toxic nature of debate and behaviour at Ryde Council needs to be addressed immediately.” He said the preservation of green space was a priority along with continued expansion of sporting fields, parks and gardens and in particular, the “protection of TG Millner Sporting Fields as valuable open space for our community.” Progressing a series of capital works in relation to the troubled Ryde Civic Centre redevelopment would also be the focus of his attention. “In the last two years Councillors have been advised of the financial mess left in the wake of the Ryde Civic Centre scandal and we’ve worked very hard to understand the ramifications, and what went wrong with the Civic Centre project,” he said. “Some Councillors still don’t accept the ramifications of that scandal and the need to return the illegal financial transactions to their original internal reserve accounts. “This has resulted in understandable frustrations in our community about this project. “Getting a series of capital works projects back on track after the illegal financial transactions were uncovered, and corrected will be a priority for this term of government.” Mayor Brown said the City of Ryde had been “plunged into a financial hole due to the Ryde Civic Centre hole in the ground” and the consequences were much worse than even some councillors were prepared to accept. He said he would see to be accessible and engaging in the community. I look forward to working hard and meeting as many people in our community as possible. “That is why my first act as Mayor was to commence a Mayor’s Public Forum,” he said. “It is a great honour to be elected your Mayor of Ryde.” CITY OF RYDE’s newly-elected Liberal Mayor, Clr Trenton Brown, has less than six months to make his mark before the next council elections in September this year. ☐ Newly-elected Ryde Mayor, Clr Trenton Brown, in Macquarie Park innovation precinct. Independent Clr Roy Maggio’s unsuccessful motion also sought to reduce speed limits to thirty kilometres in narrow, high density streets. Only Labor Clr Bernard Purcell supported the motion, despite Clr Maggio’s warning that 60 kilometre speed limits put pedestrians at risk. “The most recent accident was in Putney and there has been one on Epping Road where a cyclist was almost killed,’’ Clr Maggio said. “There are constant accidents right across the City of Ryde.’’ Liberal Clr Justin Li said the Council should not support a ‘’one size fits all’’ speed limit and each road should be assessed on a case-by-case basis. “We have different speed limits because each of the roads have different risk profiles,’’ he said. He said motorists who breach speed limits are going to do so despite speed limit signs. Council staff said the council intends to introduce forty kilometre restrictions on some (high pedestrian activity) council owned roads in West Ryde, Eastwood and Meadowbank later this year. Last month the Inner West Council unanimously voted to pass a motion to restrict the speed limit to 40 kilometres on streets in Annandale, Ashfield, Balmain, Dulwich Hill, Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Newtown, Marrickville and Petersham. Many streets in Rozelle already have a ten kilometre restriction. A Council spokesperson said 82 per cent of surveyed residents support the limits. The Council will prioritise road signage near childcare centres, schools, hospitals and aged care facilities. The City of Sydney also has a 40 kilometre restriction. City of Ryde CEO Wayne Rylands said a concern with a blanket 40 kilometre restriction is for motorists moving through the City of Ryde from neighbouring council areas where a sixty kilometre per hour limit applies on most roads. A motion to set a forty kilometre per hour speed limit on council roads in the City of Ryde was knocked back by councillors at last Tuesday night’s Council meeting. ☐ King Street in Darlington. The Inner West Council last month voted for forty kilometre speed limits. Parramatta meters go cashless The 23 machines at locations on George, Grose, Hunter, Phillip and Sorrell Streets will be converted to cashless machines and once complete, all 224 parking meters in the CBD will also be converted to cashless. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber claimed these changes will make parking services more efficient and easier for people “We know that more people are choosing to tap and go for more payments since we started shifting our parking meters over to cashless two years ago,’’ he said. “Removing coin payments makes sense, we know how frustrating it is when parking meters get jammed so this will reduce parking meter faults and create an easier experience when parking in the CBD.” Critics in Australia and overseas have warned that cashless machines capture and store credit card numbers and details. In the past 12 months, around 94 percent of parking meter payments in Parramatta were made via mobile or card. All cashless parking meters will accept payment via the EasyPark app or Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX. On-street parking meters in the Parramatta’s CBD will be cashless from April 1. ☐ Cashless parking has come to Parramatta. Councillor warns of civic centre landfill blowout Councillor Maggio’s warning came during a rescission motion debate on a previous motion that required staff to report back to councillors on three options to fill the hole that include a grass only base case fill; a mid-case option with plants and a top tier option with lighting and landscaping. He said the $14 million estimate did not include infrastructure to stabilise a land fill. “With a retaining wall this could blow out to $45 million,’’ he said. Ryde’s four Labor councillors tabled the rescission motion during last Tuesday’s Mayoral Election meeting. Labor Clr Bernard Purcell said the hole will have to be dug up again should a new civic centre be built on the site, as favoured by his party. “To fill in a hole only to dig it up again is not a good idea when we should just get on with the job,’’ he said. Liberal Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM said the council doesn’t have the money to build a new civic centre, which could cost ratepayers more than $150 million. “You (Labor) are talking like a lot of school kids ..I want this, I want that ..but I can’t hear any substantial proposal from you.’’ New Mayor Trenton Brown stressed the council had not resolved to spend $14 million to fill the hole but had only sought a staff report about the feasibility of it. The vote against the Rescission motion was seven to four with Clr Maggio abstaining. The cost of filling in the hole at the former Civic Centre site in Top Ryde could blow out from $14 million to $45 million, Independent Clr Roy Maggio warned at last month’s extraordinary meeting of Ryde Council.

Wednesday 3 April, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: [email protected] Your City News MAYOR’S PUBLIC FORUM One of the first initiatives I’ll be introducing as the new Mayor of the City of Ryde is a monthly Mayor’s Public Forum to encourage transparency and engagement within our diverse and inclusive community. These regular meetings at the Council Chambers and other community facilities will offer a structured opportunity for residents to interact directly with me and senior Council staff, discussing a wide array of topics that impact both individuals and the broader community. The Mayor’s Public Forum aims to significantly enhance communication and trust between the Council and the Ryde community. At the Ordinary Meeting on 26 March 2024, Council resolved to commence the forums on a trial basis starting in April at the Council Chambers and then to be held progressively at venues across each ward so that all residents will be able to attend. Stay tuned to Council’s webpage and social media channels for more details on dates and times. HOUSING CRISIS I am acutely aware of the current housing shortage affecting both homebuyers and renters not only in our LGA but across the entire nation. The City of Ryde has done more than most other Sydney Councils to try and alleviate this serious issue and is committed to striking the right balance between infrastructure, employment, and housing within our LGA, particularly the vital Macquarie Park Innovation District. It’s important to note the high amount of housing supply Council has delivered and continues to deliver while also identifying the need for associated social infrastructure such as schools and green space that has been promised. That’s why we resolved at the 26 March Council Meeting to work collaboratively with the NSW Government to achieve the best housing outcomes for Ryde. MASTERPLAN CONSULTATION Council has received broad community support for the draft West Ryde-Meadowbank Renewal Strategy, which was placed on public exhibition between 30 November 2023 and 18 February 2024. This ambitious and wide-ranging city shaping vision has the potential to transform these areas from commuter hubs into thriving, vibrant town centres with associated infrastructure, new employment opportunities and housing supply. Council is undertaking ongoing consultation with all key stakeholders, including the RydeEastwood Leagues Club and its 35,000 members, Sydney Water, and the 42 landowners in the West Ryde industrial precinct. The consultation doesn’t stop after the public exhibition period – we will continue to engage and collaborate with the community in the period before the final report is presented to Council in June 2024. In-person public consultation sessions will take place in Parramatta with two online sessions also scheduled to take place in April. A key focus of the review is to consider legislative changes and improvements to the acquisition process to strike the right balance between the rights of property owners and the benefits of essential public infrastructure. The State Government will hold public consultations with property owners in Parramatta in April as part of its Compulsory Land Acquisitions review. ☐ Dozens of homes across Sydney’s inner west were compulsory acquired to make way for the WestConnex project. Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said it is critical for impacted property owners to know their legal rights. “Compulsory acquisitions are necessary at times to allow state infrastructure and other public projects to proceed for the benefit of the wider community, such as schools, roads, water and electricity infrastructure projects,’’ he said. “We want to put people in the best position to understand their legal rights and ensure there are consistent and transparent acquisition processes across government.” The community consultations are being held until May 3 and are open to local residents. Price makes her Olympic return 12 years after winning Olympic silver at London 2012 in the three-person Elliott 6m class boat. Price and Haseldine achieved Australia’s best ever World Championships result in the 49erFX class when they won bronze last year. They have only been racing together since 2021 – a mentoring session on the water between the then-retired Price and up and comer Haseldine sparking a racing relationship that has seen the pair reach the top echelons of the 49erFX class. Olivia has known Evie since she was born in 2003 because their fathers sailed together in 16ft skiffs at Drummoyne Sailing Club. The 49er class made its debut at Sydney 2000, with athletes competing in identical boats designed by Australian Julian Bethwaite. Speaking on behalf of the 49erFX crew, Olivia (Liv) Price said London 2012 seemed like a lifetime ago, but selection with Evie meant a huge amount given their long association. “What I am most proud of is coming back after a few years out and testing myself in one of the most high-pressure environments. I’m also really proud that Evie and I have stayed true to ourselves,” Price said. “We have a pretty special relationship, I’ve literally known her for all her life. There’s 11 years between us. “You never know what is coming your way and you just have to keep going regardless. I never thought I would come back to Olympic sailing so it The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced the selection of four sailing athletes in the Australian Olympic Team in the 49er and 49erFX classes, with the Paris 2024 Games now less than 115 days away. ☐ Evie Haseldine, left, and Olivia Price after claiming bronze at the 2023 World Championships in the Netherlands in August to claim an Olympic quota spot for Australia in the 49erFX class in Paris (pic: Sailing Energy) ☐ Haseldine and Price in action at the 2023 World Championships. is a really special feeling that I never thought I would get to feel again.” Meanwhile, Sydney pair Jim Colley and Shaun Connor will make their Olympic debuts in the 49er class. Colley and Connor won silver at the prestigious Hyeres regatta in 2023 and the northern beaches pair have been sailing together since they were 14. The selections, announced last Thursday, add to three sailors already selected on the Australian Team for Paris, bringing the Australian Team size to 41 of an expected 460 to 480 by the Opening Ceremony on 26 July 2024. Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Anna Meares congratulated the four athletes on their selection in classes that have a relatively short Olympic history but a strong Australian connection. “Skill and perseverance has brought all four athletes to this point where they will proudly represent Australia in the waters off Marseille in the sport’s ultimate contest,” she said. “From Jim and Shaun sailing together since they were teenagers to Evie and Olivia turning a mentor relationship into a racing partnership, both these teams have demonstrated what you can achieve with teamwork and shared commitment.” Gladesville Ravens’ statement of intent in NPL Four quickfire goals in the first 45 minutes got the job done for the high-flying Ravens, while UNSW made a battle of it with two goals in the second half not enough to topple their TWT Territory opponents. Gladesville Ravens made a statement of intent in the National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW competition on Sunday afternoon at Christie Park as they dismantled University of NSW (UNSW) FC 4-2. ☐ Gladesville Ravens Women’s NPL side Sydney FC secure three points at Allianz Stadium “From start to finish we were very good with the ball and very good without the ball,” coach Talay said after the match. “I think that has been our best performance since I’ve been here. I’m in awe of all our players what they produced, and they did it for the full 90-95 minutes.” The Sky Blues high press style kept the majority of play within their attacking half for the first 45 minutes, making it difficult for the visitors to get out of their own half. The hosts were first to draw blood in the 73rd minute after a dribble and cross from Joe Lolley down the right wing found Caceres, who volleyed home from the centre of the box. Soon after, King doubled the lead notching his first ever Sydney FC goal. His initial left foot strike was blocked by Kaltak on the line, but his follow through successfully found the bottom left corner and Sydney FC were 2-0 up with 10 minutes remaining. The Sky Blues could have had more in the final few minutes and never looked in any danger of conceding as the Mariners were shut out, heading home empty handed. Sydney FC remain in 5th spot five points from second place and will next travel to Perth to face off their Western Australian counterparts tonight (Wednesday). Sydney FC Women squander Premiership Melbourne City leapfrogged Sydney FC to the A-League Women Premier’s Plate after wildly contrasting results on opposite coasts of Australia. At Leichhardt Oval, Melbourne Victory spoiled Sydney’s party with a stunning 4-0 result capped by a shocking blunder by goalkeeper Jada Whyman. Three hours later in Perth, City capitalised on their slip-up, winning 2-1 and surviving a late scare from Perth Glory to claim the premiership. Sydney FC, who started last week knowing wins over Canberra or Melbourne Victory would seal a fourth-straight premiership, instead blew both shots at silverware. After a 1-0 defeat in the capital on Wednesday, the Sky Blues were off colour again on Sunday. Sydney FC have qualified for the semi-finals which start on the weekend of the 20th April with their opponent still to be determined but it will be against either the Victory, Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets or Western United. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 3 April, 2024 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers roaring to Grand Final! Sezer Sizzler Seals Success A long distance field goal forty seconds before the siren gave the Tigers a magic 17 to 16 victory in the local derby. Halfback Aidan Sezer put the ball over the black dot to seal the famous win which puts us top of the NRL table with six points. Under supercoach Benji Marshall the Tigers victory follows last week’s memorable 32 points to six demolition of the Gummies at Leichhardt Oval HQ and we are looking good to beat Bennies boys in Bananaland this Saturday night. Tigers teen sensation five eighth Lachlan Galvin had a Man Of The Match game and was involved in the try of the match when he threw a dummy and sliced through the Jellies defence on halfway before he palmed off a defender to offload a miracle pass to his high school teammate and fullback Jahream Tigers roared into Grand Final leadership with a stunning win over the Jellied Eels at Parra Swampland on Easter Monday. ☐ Aidan Sezer celebrated the winning field goal with Man Of The Match Lachlan Galvin (second from left) and team mates on Monday to place the Tigers on the top of this year’s NRL premiership table ☐ Fullback Jahream Bula was Man Of The Match in our last game against Bennie’s Boys - will it be a repeat performance? Bula in the 69th minute to take the lead. Lachlan also set up the first try of the match in the fourth minute when he put in a grubber kick for Papua New Guinea international and Tigers new centre Justin Olam to score. Justin scored his second try in the 65th minute after some dazzling footwork from Aidan who worked a lovely run around with prop forward Alex Seyfarth. The Benji era is well and truly alive this season as we go for Grand Final glory and you can bet the Ma-In-Law’s funeral fund on this inspirational team of exceptional talent. Lachlan exemplifies the depth we have in brilliant rookie players and he praised Benji for inspiring his last two incredible performances. “He has been so good for me the last three weeks and made me so confident and I love playing for him,” he said. Benji said the win against the Jellies was one of the most resilient performances he has seen in a Tigers jersey and he was thrilled to win with less than a minute to go. The game attracted 28,608 fans at Parra Swampland with most of them Tiger fans - and it was the Tiger’s defence that won this team a standing ovation after the final siren. “If our defence wasn’t that good today, I don’t think we would have won,” captain and hooker Api Koroisau said. Api made 44 tackles and ran 30 metres out of dummy-half. Our next game in Brizie this Saturday kicks off at 7.30pm. In the same match last season Jahream had a stand out performance to secure the Number One jersey for seasons to come.
