Mayor’s Dramatic Public Apology for
Council’s Communication Failures
BY OUR CIVIC ROUNDSMAN ‘Bureaucratic excesses and
poor democratic practices’
Hunters Hill Mayor Ross Williams has made an unprecedented
apology to the community for what he described as bureaucratic Funds boost for local scientists
excess, communication failures and poor democratic practices.
In a speech at the recent extraordinary Mayor Ross
council meeting, Mayor Williams blamed poor Williams
democratic practices for the large number of
speakers at a previous council meeting. speakers wanting to address the council and
to hear proceedings while waiting next door,

“This highlights in my view that council could
improve transparency and effective communi-
ty engagement.”
Mayor Williams acknowledges that a signifi-
cant number of residents - particularly elderly
residents - do not have access to the internet
and rely on public notices in the local news-
paper.
He also blamed the new meeting schedule
for the failure of the meeting to debate the
council’s draft local housing strategy in the
time available.
“It placed unreasonable pressure on council-
lors and residents to have to read and consid-
er over 500 pages with attachments including
1,700 pages in the business paper,” he said.
“This is to a large extent the result of coun-
cil’s decision to reduce the council meetings
to a monthly basis instead of the traditional
fortnightly meetings and this decision was op-
posed by the Deputy Mayor and myself.”
He went on to apologise for communication
failures.
