WIN WIN WIN with TWT WIN! One of five family passes to Disney On Ice Father Martin’s Musings Changing the guard! He was a fictitious character who never really grew up and would take children with him to a magical place called Neverland. Ever since then there has been a popular term for adults who never appeared to have grown up that they are Peter Pan types of people. James Barrie also wrote a popular play called The Admirable Mr Crichton that centred around the events in the life of a poorly treated servant working for a very traditional aristocratic British family. The wealthy British family with their servant Mr Crichton went on a boat cruise and during this time the boat ran aground on a deserted island. Fortunately for the family they had their servant Mr Crichton with them who knew immediately how to find adequate shelter for them, find fresh water and food to keep everyone nourished until they were rescued. The play highlighted the reality that the poor servant was now someone who became greatly admired and respected. Whatever happened to this man after everyone was rescued was not revealed in the play. When I heard this story, I immediately thought that this is the message that Jesus of Nazareth was making when he said in the Gospel according to Mark; “that many who are now first will be last and the last will be first.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney James M Barrie (1860-1937) was a gifted and popular Scottish born author and playwriter, perhaps his most known work was the mythical story of Peter Pan. Harry’s 99 per cent fabulous The other one per cent is the problem, though, he can have outbursts where he bites or scratches other cats or even humans. This means he needs to go to a one only animal household and is not suitable for a home with small children or frail and elderly members. He can get overexcited and starts to play a bit rough, but the signs of that are usually easy to detect, and he can be just left alone to calm down. He can also lose his temper and then be problematic. If you think you can deal with this magnificent but challenging cat, please call WLPA on 9817 4892 or if preferred email admin@ wlpa.org. WLPA would love to introduce you to Harry, as it - and especially his many fans - hopes one day to find the right loving home for him. Harry is 99% fabulous. He is a very charismatic, affectionate, confident, clever cat who likes being around humans and can be seen here having an adventure while showing off climbing on the top of his enclosure. He has no choice other than to sleep rough on the ground with no shelter. Preserving our urban forest Our municipality has one of the highest percentages of tree canopy in Sydney at 35%, and we want to make sure that we stay on this trajectory. As part of our efforts, Council is developing a draft Urban Forest Strategy. To shape the draft strategy, we have launched a survey to explore various aspects related to our urban forest including awareness, current engagement patterns, priorities for improvement and community interest for involvement in future initiatives. Our trees play an important part in both our heritage and character and add enormous value in providing increased biodiversity, urban shading, amenity and corridors. With a rise in tree vandalism, arboriculture impacts and other detrimental tree practices, we want to plan ahead to ensure that our trees, vegetation and plants are preserved and continue to thrive. Hunters Hill is renowned for its iconic treelined streets, its leafy family-friendly parks and its green bushland area - in line with our position as Australia’s oldest garden suburb. Help us protect and grow our urban forest by sharing your feedback by Friday 21 June 2024 at connect.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/urban-forest-strategy. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill LETTERS to the Editor Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT with Charles Amos* Rotary: Rewards and Recognition Jack’s Law has passed, at last Dear Sir, Congratulations to the Minns Government for passing Jack’s Law with the support of the NSW Opposition. Jack’s Law was passionately advocated by Belinda and Brett Beasley after their 17-year-old son, Jack, was stabbed to death by a cowardly gang on the Gold Coast. Jack’s Law will protect the community by allowing our NSW Police to wand anyone in certain public places for concealed weapons subject to certain conditions. Once again, as with the revised bail laws, if our major political parties work together we can protect - mainly our children - from danger in public. Some Greens politicians did not support this Law at all which is beyond my understanding, some opposition members thought it did not go far enough, but it is a good start to prevent future knife attacks in NSW. We all remember how John Howard’s Government got gun control tightened up in Australia and now, hopefully, Chris Minns’ Government has got knife crime reduced in NSW. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Funds are raised for worthy causes both locally and abroad and over the last few years the Club has raised a record amount of funds for local projects and overseas causes. Locally, funds have been provided for Dementia research, Domestic violence, Youth suicide, School youth programs, the building of a shed for autistic students at Giant steps in Gladesville and recently donating a large defibrillator for the new Hunters Hill Sports and Community Centre at Boronia Park. Overseas support has been provided for the NZ flood victims, the Ukraine crisis, the School of St. Jude in Tanzania, Interplast – a program for surgeons working in the Pacific Islands and for the continued eradication of Polio. Programs and events for fund raising have included Gala Dinners with special guests, entertainment, raffles, auctions and donations. Other ongoing programs include the annual Car Safari, this year being our 10th Car Safari exploring the Victorian high country. Also, our ongoing morning Tai Chi classes each Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 9am at Weil Park in Woolwich, now in its 12th year. The spirit of giving is always rewarding – as is receiving recognition. The Club received the award for ‘Community event of the year in 2023’ for organising the inaugural ‘Hunters Hill Spring Garden Competition’. The competition is being held again this year in conjunction with the Hunters Hill Council and entry to the Garden Competition is FREE. Last year over 500 tickets were sold for entry to the winning open gardens with funds raised directed to improving the ‘Hillman Orchard’. This year a prize giving evening is planned for Friday 20th September at the new Sports and Community Centre, where the winning At the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill, we volunteer and serve to change lives and help improve the community. Gardens will be announced and shortly after, the Open Gardens Day is planned for Sunday 22nd September. Club Membership has more than doubled and the Club received a ‘Membership Growth Award’ from District Rotary. This has been achieved by having a permanent meeting venue at the Hunters Hill Club, promoting worthy causes with good PR and generally having fun and camaraderie within the Club. Further recognition has been received with the unveiling of a plaque at Figtree Park in recognition of the work Rotary has contributed over many years improving the amenity of that Park, building a fountain, garden bed and Community Centre which backs onto the park. Having been President of the Rotary Club for the last few years I have enjoyed being involved in the Club’s many programs and achievements. I will be handing over to President Elect Barbara Enright at our Changeover Dinner planned for Wednesday 10th July at the Ironwood Cafe in Woolwich. The theme for the evening is ‘Christmas in July’. For those wishing to attend, tickets can be purchased online for $65 pp from: www.trybooking .com/CSNTI The Rotary Club would be pleased to hear from you if you are interested in membership or just providing your time as a volunteer. We have so many people at Christie park and it’s not fair on them the complete lack of communication to the users has been neglected. I have been trying to reach out to the council officers for so many years about a project that’s literally now bogged down in crap! Finally, someone listens and to date the toilet blocks are now shut down and portaloos are being used. It’s a waste of time and money - who will bear the burden? Wednesday 12 June, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Opposition call for payroll tax amnesty for NSW GPs The NSW Opposition is calling on the Minns Labor Government to deliver a payroll tax amnesty for NSW GPs in this year’s Budget to ensure access to affordable healthcare. Leader of the Opposition Mark Speakman called on Premier Chris Minns to urgently provide GPs with a payroll tax amnesty, so that clinics across NSW are not forced to close or raise their fees. “From September 4, many clinics will be facing a retrospective tax bill of hundreds of thousands of dollars that could force clo- sures or fee increases,” Mr Speakman said. “This will mean more patients presenting to our state’s overwhelmed emergency departments, which are buckling under the pressure of Labor’s cuts to health funding. “The Minns Government should urgently guarantee a payroll tax amnesty from July 2018 to June 2025, to be followed by ongoing suitable exemptions - such as for bulk billing practices.” But instead, he said the Minns Labor Government was again “missing in action” while also cutting the health budget and adding to the hospital waiting lists. Mr Speakman said Bureau of Health Information figures showed that the state’s hospital system was under immense strain as a result of Labor’s budget mismanagement. Member for Ryde Jordan Lane highlighted the provision of exemptions and amnesties in other states highlights the feasibility of such measures, which starkly contrasts with the Minns Labor Government’s prolonged indecision. “With clinics potentially facing retroac- tive payroll tax bills exceeding half a million dollars, it’s imperative that the Minns Labor Government commit to an amnesty as part of a sustainable resolution at least temporarily,” Mr Lane emphasised. “If Queensland and Victoria have addressed this issue, the question remains as to why the Minns Labor Government fails to extend similar measures for the people in NSW.” A Medicare Urgent Care Clinic for Ryde The Ryde Medicare UCC will offer extended hours and additional services to deliver urgent care to locals and reduce pressure on the Ryde Hospital. The existing state-funded service will transition to the Commonwealth programme, ensuring a national approach to reducing the number of people attending emergency departments for urgent, but non-life threatening, conditions. In 2022-23, almost half of the presentations to Ryde Hospital were for semi-urgent or non-urgent matters. The clinic is one of a further 29 to be established around the country as part of a $227 million expansion of the Medicare UCC Program announced in the 2024–25 Budget. The 58 existing Medicare UCCs across Australia have already seen more than 400,000 presentations since the first sites opened in June 2023. This includes more than 65,000 visits to the 14 existing clinics in NSW – located in Albury, Batemans Bay, Campbelltown, Cessnock, Coffs Harbour, Peninsula (Gosford), Lake Haven, Lismore, Penrith, Maroubra, Rooty Hill, Tamworth, Westmead and Wollongong. “Medicare Urgent Care Clinics are already delivering for people in New South Wales,” Federal Health Minister, Mark Butler, said. “There have been more than 63,000 presentations to the existing 14 Medicare Urgent Care Clinics in NSW, meaning patients have been able to receive urgent care quickly and for free. “Moving the existing service in Ryde under the Medicare Urgent Care Clinic umbrella will mean better services for locals and deliver a consistent and targeted approach to reducing demand on busy emergency departments.” He said Medicare Urgent Care Clinics were a key part of the Albanese Government’s commitment to strengthen Medicare and make health care more accessible and affordable. Mr Butler said Medicare UCCs had treated thousands of Australians who would either face a long wait in the emergency department or who simply put off getting treatment at all. Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, said extra services to close gaps and reduce costs for Australians were a hallmark of the Albanese Government’s approach to health care. “The Top Ryde Urgent Care Service is delivering great care for locals, and they’ll be able to do even more when they become a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in the coming months,” he said. “The Albanese Government is delivering more clinics, in more locations, and all people need is their Medicare card.” The Albanese Government will provide the people of Northern Sydney with more access to fully bulk billed care for their urgent health needs, as the existing Top Ryde Urgent Care Service becomes a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic. ☐ Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale and Federal Health Minister Mark Butler in discus- sions with staff at the site of the Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in Top Ryde. Hornsby told to repay $36 million for unfinished park The unspent cash is part of a $40 million grant received in 2018 for the Westleigh Park project but only $4 million of the grant money has been spent. The state govern- ment has knocked back the Shire’s request for an extension of time to spend the money, claiming it was not able to demonstrate the sports and recreational project was on track. The grant was part of the Stronger Communities Fund, which was condemned by par- liamentary inquiry in 2020 after the former government admitted to shredding documents Hornsby Shire Council council has been ordered to repay the State Government a $36 million grant for an unbuilt park. ☐ An artist’s impression of a section of the Westleigh Park project ☐ Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock ☐ NSW Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig used to approve the grants. Hornsby Shire Council received $90 million in Stronger Communities Fund grants which former Premier Gladys Berejiklian conceded could be seen as “pork-barrelling” but “not illegal”. In a statement issued on Monday, Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock said he was furious with the government’s demand to repay the money and defended the grants. The Mayor said the previous govern- ment gave the $90 million to Hornsby Council as compensation for the loss of a large part of the southern territory of the Shire to the City of Parramatta during the council amalgamations. He also said the development application for Westleigh Park has been lodged and construction is due to start later this year. “It is the local community that will miss out,’’ Mayor Ruddock said. “Since receiving the grant, we have proceeded with extensive planning, community and stakeholder consultation and the due processes required of Council for the new parklands on the basis the funding is ours.” The Mayor said the Shire is in desperate need of recreational spaces and new sports facilities. “The State Government’s housing targets makes this need even more critical,’’ he said. “These targets come with the promise of funding for essential infrastructure so to take away funding that was already given to us, and has been allocated, is ridiculous. “If not for this decision children would be playing sport here in the very near future, rather than spending their time on iPads.” He said the Shire will look at fighting the decision. “Council is now considering what options are avail- able to us to ensure our community gets the recreational facilities it was promised,” he said. Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig said the government is not backing down on its demand. “At a time when we are facing a cost-of-living crisis, every dollar counts,” Mr Hoenig said on Monday. “Hornsby Council has had years to utilise this funding and the original deadline written into grant guidelines has long passed.”

6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 12 June, 2024 Carrying on Jimmy Shaw’s envi- ronmental advocacy in Ryde On June 5 every year - World Environment Day – local Ryde hero and Greens member Jimmy Shaw hoisted a banner to raise awareness of the environment’s decline and to urge the residents of Ryde to act to protect it. World Environment Day puts a global spotlight on the pressing environmental challenges of our times. The day is a global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the plant. With his passing late last year, Ryde-Epping Greens carried on Jimmy’s tradition on World Environment Day. Ryde-Epping Greens raised a banner and listened to speakers at Ryde Park to mark World Environment Day, and to uphold Jimmy’s callto-action for the residents of Ryde. Speakers, pictured, included former Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, Ryde-Epping Greens member Cosmin Luca and Ryde Councillor Penny Pedersen. “Jimmy did so much to fight for a fairer world and a brighter future for all of us. By putting up the banner today, we remember and honour him,” Cosmin said. “Jimmy was a gem, and remembering people like him is important,” Rhiannon said. “What really drives good change is people – when people’s voices are strong.” “The Environment movement has mobilised millions of people around the world.” Clr Pedersen spoke of her and the community’s fondness for Jimmy and reflected on how Jimmy’s advocacy brought sustainability to the forefront of the minds of Ryde’s residents, laying much of the groundwork for change in the area over the years. Funding announced for community projects The electorate of Ryde has today secured $300,000 in funding for a total of 20 projects through the NSW Government’s 2023 Community Building Partnership Program. “The State Government funds will deliver much-needed improvements to local facilities including local school, churches and community organisations,” Ryde MP Jordan Lane said. “This is fantastic news for Ryde. This grassroots funding will directly help create a more vibrant and inclusive local community with positive social, environmental and/or recreational outcomes. “I congratulate all the organisations that were successful in their application and look forward to seeing how these projects make a real difference for community groups in the area.” The full list of successful projects in the Ryde electorate for the 2023 round are: St Anthony’s Catholic Parish, Marsfield; CASS Care, Meadowbank; North Cross Christian School, Ryde; Catholic Parish of St Michaels, Meadowbank; Smalls Road Public School P&C; Ryde Macquarie Anglican Church, Eastwood; Temple Society, Meadowbank; CCA Community Hub NSW, Eastwood; West Ryde Anglican Church, West Ryde; Derek’s Place, Ryde; North-West Sydney Football, Macquarie Park; St Kevin’s Catholic Primary School, Eastwood; Goodstart Early Learning, North Ryde; KU Children’s Services, Eastwood; Denistone East Before & After School Care, Denistone East; St Michael’s P&F Association, Meadowbank; Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club, Eastwood; Kent Rd Pub- lic School, North Ryde; Gowrie NSW, North Ryde; and St Philip’s Anglican Church, East- wood. Fairytale wedding in Big Apple for Bernie and Edwina They registered the marriage at Manhattan City Hall and held the wedding ceremony the following Saturday. Bernard Purcell, sitting City of Ryde Labor Councillor, and Edwina Clifton, former City of Ryde Greens Councillor, met on council where they were good friends from the very beginning. Over the years, and with the breakdown of their respective marriages, they formed an ongoing caucus which culminated in the wedding last May. “I am a truly lucky man to have the good fortune of meeting, and marrying, Edwina,” Clr Purcess told The Weekly Times. “It will be fantastic to have Edwina by my side for our future together, and especially leading up the Mayoral election in September.” Ms Clifton, a family law barrister, said the pair enjoyed a very special marriage in New York. “We enjoyed a very special marriage in New York and then enjoyed our honeymoon in that terrific city - it has been a whirlwind On May 11th, 2024, Bernard Purcell married Edwina Clifton in a small and intimate ceremony under the Brooklyn bridge in New York City. ☐ Bernard Purcell and Edwina Clifton on their wedding day in New York; and above right, enjoying their stay in one of the more serene parts of the big and bustling city. Constitution Road in Meadowbank reopens The reopening follows an intensive three months of onsite construction activity and provides much needed improvements to access and mobility for both pedestrians and active transport users within the Meadowbank Station and educational precinct. The at-grade access is user-friendly for wheelchair and pram users reducing the longer detours previously required. Work included cutting back the rock face under the Angas Street bridge to allow the construction of a footpath connection between Bowden Street and See Street and a new pedestrian crossing on Constitution Road, near See Street. City of Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown said that while the project had been delayed due to engineering challenges, difficulty sourcing a specialist contractor who could undertake the work, and prolonged wet weather, he was pleased Council had been able to deliver the vital upgrades to Constitution Road for the community and thanked everyone for their patience. For more details on Council’s ongoing work in Meadowbank, visit: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ Projects/Major-Works/ Constitution-Road-Infrastructure-Upgrade The new footpath connection along the southern side of Constitution Road between Bowden Street and See Street, Meadowbank and new pedestrian crossing, connecting pedestrians back to the northern side of Constitution Road at the See Street intersection and through to Meadowbank Station, have been reopened to the public. ☐ Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown officially reopened Constitution Road with a ceremonial ribbon cutting couple of weeks,” she said. “Bernard is such a wonderful husband – he is a terrific cook, is kind and attentive and so supportive of me. We are looking forward to many happy years together.”

Wednesday 12 June, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: [email protected] Your City News RYDE CENTRAL MISMANAGEMENT Today, I will be looking at the discovery in 2022 of financial mismanagement within Council that caused all work on the Ryde Central project to be halted. The impact of that discovery has produced significant and ongoing issues for Council’s financial position. After the sod turning ceremony for the 1 Devlin Street site was held in October 2021, work commenced on planning and undertaking essential underground infrastructure for the project. But in August 2022, the then new City of Ryde CEO Wayne Rylands was alerted by the Chief Financial Officer that $95 million in funds from Council’s Repealed Developer Contributions Plans and Other Externally Restricted Reserves was transferred to Internally Restricted Reserves. Of this, $35.5 million had been inappropriately allocated for the Ryde Central Project. Although another $52.5m was spent, the majority of the money was allocated towards providing infrastructure and other programs which delivered a community benefit and was not required to be returned. There was also inappropriate movement and/or use of funds (remaining balance of $7m) in other externally restricted reserves, such as Voluntary Planning Agreements, and the Domestic Waste Reserve. Following verification of the improper transfer of funds by forensic accountants, Nexia Australia, the CEO then reported the matter to the Office of Local Government (OLG), the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and the NSW Audit Office (AO). The OLG described the transfer of the funds as “illegal” stating: “There may have been, or may be potential for, significant waste of public money”. Next week: righting the wrong. MEADOWBANK UPDATE I attended the reopening of Constitution Road Meadowbank recently and was pleased to see the newly built footpath opened and traffic flowing in both directions again after three months of intensive construction work. Council has completed stage one of this project, which is the rock cutting and footpath construction as well as a new pedestrian crossing, enabling safe pedestrian access to Meadowbank Station. I appreciate the patience of our community while this project was completed. Netball trailblazer appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) ANITA KEELAN AM EASTWOOD RYDE Netball Association (ERNA) Life Member and nationally respected netball coaching figure, Anita Keelan AM, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to netball both as a coach and administrator. Anita, who founded the Carlingford Flames netball club, was an ERNA rep from the age of about 11 and has held numerous coaching and development roles with the organisation. Netball NSW congratulated her on the Honour. “Long-serving high-performance coach, and ex-NSW Swifts assistant, Anita Keelan (Eastwood Ryde Netball Association) has been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the game as both a coach and administrator,” Netball NSW said in a statement. Part of the Swifts’ backroom team for three Grand Final campaigns, including their 2019 Premiership success, Anita has worked across various Netball NSW programs for many years and has been the Netball Australia Pathway coach since 2022. “These Honours are about providing us the chance to celebrate those who work tirelessly to improve their local communities,” Netball NSW Chair Sallianne Faulkner said. “Netball is a staple of every community across Australia and in NSW we are proud to be one of the leading sports of choice. “However, that is not possible without the efforts of those in our grassroots and pathway programs who continue to go above and beyond to ensure the continued health of the game. “This is a very special recognition and the continued strong presence of netball in these honours demonstrates its high standing in the national conscience.” One of Anita’s long-time friends and Netball NSW director, Vincent De Luca OAM, said she was an extraordinary individual who had selflessly given her time and expertise at all levels of the game for decades. “She has had a positive impact on the lives of so many kids as well as athletes at the international level,” he told The Weekly Times. “She so deserves her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia”. Another accomplished netball administrator, ERNA’s Anne Doring OAM said that over the years, she was proud to have mentored Anita and encouraged her in her coaching career. “I’m just so proud of her achievements and she absolutely deserves to be recognised with an AM in the King’s Birthday Honours. Well done,” Anne told The Weekly Times. In early 2022, Anita’s outstanding ability to nurture up and coming netball talent was recognised by Netball Australia, which appointed her to the newly-cereated position of Pathway Head Coach. She is responsible for leading the technical delivery of Netball Australia’s pathway strategy and driving the development of Australian netball talent to ensure sustained success. Keelan joined Netball Australia having held coaching roles within Suncorp Super Netball and previous national league teams, Australian 21&U World Youth Cup / Australian Institute of Sport, the NSW Institute of Sport and Netball NSW programs. Netball Australia Executive General Manager of Performance Stacey West at the time said Anita’s extensive experience across all levels of the pathway and passion for athlete progression made her the perfect fit. “The success that Anita has been able to share in, as a coach, and the quality of the programs she has worked in say a great deal about her,” she said. “Anita will lead our high-performance system in establishing new standards within our pathway that optimises the progression of our talent on their journey towards the Diamonds.” The newly created role will support a nationally aligned and integrated high-performance pathway system that embraces all stakeholders. These programs are critical to the future success of the Diamonds, and even more so after two years of COVID-19 disruption to the pathway. Working closely with Origin Diamonds Head Coach, Stacey Marinkovich, and Head of Pathway, Kristen Barnes, Keelan will lead the delivery of national pathway programs, including the 17/U, 19/U, 21/U and the Australian Development squad. “This is an exciting new role for Netball Australia and I’m very honoured to be joining the team in developing the next generation of Diamonds. I can’t wait to get started.” Netball NSW in March last year announce Anita as the recipient of The 2023 Netball NSW Waratah Service Award. In 2007 Anita was also awarded The Margaret Corbett OAM Coaches Award which rewards and acknowledges coaches that have demonstrated excellence in coaching. _________________________________________ A FULL LISTING OF LOCAL AWARD RECIPIENTS WILL APPEAR IN NEXT WEEK’S EDITION OF THE WEEKLY TIMES By Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Anita Keelan AM, front right, with the 2022 ERNA Hawks Premier League team and other members of the coaching team. Try Ceroc dancing at West Ryde or Five Dock If you’re looking for a fun new leisure activity and want to try Ceroc in TWT Territory, there are classes you can join in at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club in West Ryde or Canada Bay Club in Five Dock. Ceroc, originally from France and then made popular in UK, is a modern form of jive. It’s a smooth and stylish dance blending jive, ballroom and swing to make a fun modern partner dance enjoyed by people of all ages. With its versatility of styling and simple movements, it appeals to all tastes and it can be danced to any music with a steady beat from 40s swing to modern Top 40 hits. And it’s probably one of the easiest partner dance styles you can learn – come along to one of our Ceroc Sydney dance classes and put that theory to the test! Classes operate on a weekly basis, so, unlike that gym membership ☐ Ceroc dance class action at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club that’s been sitting there unused since you paid for it, there’s no need to sign up for a course! Just turn up any week and you’ll fit right into the beginner dance class, probably with a number of other first timers too. Teachers will provide you with a fun learning experience in a social environment at any one of our class venues across Sydney. All ages are welcome* and the Ceroc crew loves beginners! (* Under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent/ guardian) There’s no need to bring a partner – you are rotated around to different partners during the class, although if you do want to stay with your own partner that’s fine too. Ryde Eastwood_Weekly Press Ad_7 June_2024.indd 1 7/06/2024 4:12:30 PM BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Let’s welcome back Tigers stars at Leichhardt HQ this Saturday! The two four pointers - and a conversion by skipper Api Koroisau - gave the Tigers a ten points to nil lead which was extended to 14 points to ten on the stroke of halftime when prop forward Alex Seyfarth barged over on the back of two penalties that took the Tigers the length of the field. Winger Alex Lobb scored his first try for the Tigers in the 5th minute when he spectacularly leaped into the air to catch a bomb put up by five-eighth Jayden Sullivan. Five minutes later Jayden scored a try against his former club after a powerful break from fullback Jahream Bula split the Sinners’ defence to see him offload the try scoring pass under the posts. On the back of this three try blitz, the Tigers dominated the first half and supercoach Benji Marshall revealed after the match that last week’s bye had given the players an opportunity to start the game with a lot of energy. He said at ten points up the players’ confidence was high and we were playing some of the best football we’ve produced this season. Our supercoach knows that you don’t give your game plan away before Round 12 and you save your best for a surging run into the top eight until the second half of the season and (once in the top eight) you make a charge for grand final glory. “We’ve still got 12 games to go and a bye, so I’m not one to give up on a season and neither are the players,’’ he said after the match. He said our injured super star half back Adam Doueihi of Eastwood is expected to get a run with the reserves next week and half back Aidan Sezer will return to the first grade side. Solomon Alaimano had an impressive game against the Sinners and this six foot six winger’s ability to catch our opponents’ bombs reminds us of his rugby union pedigree and the game’s trademark line outs. The Tigers’ match against the Tiddles at Leichhardt Oval HQ this Saturday kicks off at 3pm. SEE YA THERE! Our beloved Tigers return to Leichhardt Oval HQ this Saturday after two tries in the opening ten minutes put the Sinners to the sword in The Gong on Friday night. ☐ Tigers fans will welcome the return of club favourite Adam Doueihi, pictured centre with fans on Members Day this week. He’s expected to make his return at Leichhardt Oval HQ this Saturday after an extended stint on the sidelines through injury. Tigers Supercoach Benji Marshall is most likely to give Adam a run in reserves while we can also expect to see the return of half back Aidan Sezer.
