If you’re not familiar with what Fiddler on the Roof is all about, here’s a brief synopsis: It’s 1905, and village life in Czarist Russia can sometimes feel as precarious as a fiddler on the roof. Tevye and his wife, Golde, are doing their best to raise their five daughters in accordance with the traditions of their closeknit Jewish community. But when the younger generation starts pushing boundaries with new ideas and convictions of their own, and the village faces increasing threat of persecution and violence, what choices will Tevye make? And how will the community survive? Full of warmth, humour and heart, Fiddler on the Roof is joyful, thought-provoking, entertaining and deeply moving. This much-loved musical masterpiece features iconic songs such as “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Sunrise, Sunset” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, and speaks to timeless and universal themes of love, faith, community and kindness. This humbling and revealing statement by this man revealed to me that being a doctor is more than having an occupation it’s also the means of realizing genuine life fulfillment. People so often find their calling in life by trial and error that often can’t be anticipated. I was once given a template to share with high school students about 3 key concepts in finding success in any vocational calling. The first is participate in as many things as possible as it’s only then will you find your strengths and weaknesses. The second thing is to be realistic and centre your career aspirations where there is a demand for your distinctive skills and talents. Often what someone wants to do and what is available around them are very different things. And the third thing is to persevere in your choices as there will be some good and bad experiences that will need to be worked through and valuable lessons will be learnt. It’s a fair comment to make that resilience is a struggle for many people today. Saint Paul in his great letter to Galatians makes the point; “People will reap what they sow.” Fr Martin R Maunsell Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in Sydney I well remember a much-loved doctor saying after he retired; “When I was practicing as a doctor, I felt so valued especially when I knew that my patients needed me in their often-troubled lives. But now while being retired I now appreciate how I need them so much more.” Ray and Nancy’s Diamond Wedding Ray and Nancy were married in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Maroubra in 1964 and moved to Marsfield in 1969 where they raised four children and now have five grandchildren. Ray told The Weekly Times he will celebrate the Anniversary in the home the couple built on land they purchased, with a special gift for Nancy. “It will be a diamond ring, it has to be a diamond,’’ he said. Ray met Nancy (nee Speziale) in the late 1950s when they worked for the Royal Exchange Assurance firm. “One night, when I saw her waiting outside for a bus, I offered her a lift home in my car and we kissed,’’ he said. “We just clicked from the first moment we met and although we have different interests we found we were suited for each other from the word go.’’ He said he proposed close to his 23rd birthday - and Nancy accepted his proposal immediately - but their most wonderful moment was the birth of their eldest child Darlene at the Crown Street Hospital on March 13 in 1966. “In those days the father couldn’t be present to see the birth but it was still a wonderful experience,’’ he said. Darlene has a daughter - Montana - and Ray and Nancy’s son Matthew has children Alexander and Charlotte. Their son Andrew has a daughter named Lucy and his son Daniel has Congratulations to Ray and Nancy James of Marsfield who celebrate their 60th (‘Diamond’) Wedding Anniversary tomorrow - Thursday, April 18. ☐ Ray and Nancy are pictured on their wedding day; and, below, today as grandparents. In 1993/94 he was selected to represent Australia in a Veterans Hockey team which went on to win an international tournament in Adelaide and he has represented Sydney and New South Wales. “Nancy was never interested in sport but we’ve enjoyed 13 cruises together, to Europe, the South Pacific and Asia,’’ he said. Nancy’s interests include folk art and she has crocheted many ‘Angel Blankets’ for Sydney’s Adventist Hospital patients. “These are the very special blankets that are given to mothers who have stillborn babies,” he said. “Nancy hopes to be able to continue to assist the hospital in this way for many more years.” The couple’s anniversary has been acknowledged by King Charles III and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Ryde councillor Bernard Purcell announces candidacy for popular Mayoral election It will be the first time in decades that Ryde’s Mayor will be popularly elected. “As a long-time local, I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to run as the first popularly elected in Ryde in the modern era,’ Clr Purcell told The Weekly Times. “I have lived in the City of Ryde for nearly 20 years and both my sons enjoyed excellent public-school educations at Eastwood Public and Epping Boys High. “I was elected to Ryde Council in 2017 and have seen the council run well and run poorly. The Liberals have done little in their three years and wasted many opportunities.” Clr Purcell said the last three years of Council under the Liberals had seen inaction and hand-wringing – “focusing on themselves rather than getting on with the job.” He said parks, playgrounds, major projects and standing had suffered under their revolving door leadership. “I will lead a team that has the residents, businesses, and community groups at the heart of every decision we make,” he said. “We will build a hall at the Civic Centre site, and again ensure a financially viable project. “Instead, the Liberals will leave us without a hall for another decade, spending up to $14m in the process.” Clr Purcell said Labor would also focus on revitalising our town centres. He said Eastwood, West Ryde, Top Ryde, Gladesville and Cox’s Road were all great, but could be better. “We want new vibrancy to these areas without losing the essential character that each precinct possesses,” he said. “We will ensure that the environment is once again a priority by improving and protecting our natural spaces with progressive policies in waste management, tree protection and waterway guardianship.” He said he couldn’t speak highly enough of the team that Labor would bring to the upcoming local elections, which would work cohesively to bring the best outcomes for Ryde. “I offer open, transparent government that will reinvigorate our governmental presence, shopping precincts and the overall amenity for the City of Ryde,” he said. RYDE COUNCILLOR Bernard Purcell has announced that he will be Labor’s Mayoral candidate at this year’s Local Government elections in September. ☐ Labor’s Ryde Mayoral candidate, Clr Bernard Purcell
4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 April, 2024 Improving aged care By Kylea Tink MP* Australia’s aged-care system is a large and complex system that many find difficult — and sometimes overwhelming — to navigate. The system has long been mired in complaints, poor oversight and short-term, piecemeal fixes. My team and I have spent countless hours with North Sydney constituents who have struggled to make sense of the supports they are entitled to and how they can access these. The policy challenge now is to rebuild not only how aged care is funded, monitored and delivered, but also trust in the system. If people can’t trust that the government is acting with their best interests at heart, policies become less effective, workers and residents will not support reform, and the system will continue to suffer. I am absolutely committed to continuing to work with the Federal Government towards a system that works, and that can continue to support the growing and evolving needs of our community into the future. My team and I consult regularly with members of our Ageing Well Working Group, comprising volunteers from our community with first-hand experience of how the system works and what we need to improve. Feedback from this group informs my work in Canberra, as well as additional initiatives that my office has put together to meet our community’s specific needs. Our Ageing Well: Scams & Financial Security seminar with ScamWatch and Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney is one such initiative. Surveys show that older Australians are at Since 2021, the Australian Government has been making changes to the aged care system to support those who need it now, and ensure that we can meet the growing needs of our ageing population into the future. * Kylea Tink is the federal Member for North Sydney greatest risk from financial scams. Given the cost pressures facing all Australians right now, it’s more important than ever to empower our seniors to protect their financial security, emotional and mental wellbeing. I invite all interested seniors to please sign up for this free community seminar at https:// www.kyleatink.com.au/ageing-well. If you have any friends or older relatives who might benefit from this seminar please do encourage them to sign up as well. None of us should ever take lightly the opportunity and privilege it is to grow old. I look forward to continuing to work with and for our community towards a stronger aged care system and services to help all Australians enjoy a safe, secure and fulfilling old age. Hunters Hill Guest Column Alice Kang A living memorial in our midst In the entre New Guinea theatre of war, including Bougainville, some 7000 Australian soldiers, sailors and air crew died. At least 625 were killed in fighting on the Kokoda Track itself and another 1600 wounded. More than 4000 were struck down by diseases including malaria, beriberi and scrub typhus. Eighty years later those losses seem unimaginable, and that is why we must never forget. Running for more than 800 metres from Rhodes station to Concord Hospital, alongside the Parramatta River, is the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway which was designed to reflect the jungle atmosphere. As a result, the extensive plantings of tropical trees and shrubs have made this a public asset, open to anyone who wants to enjoy the surroundings and reflect on the loss of life in all conflicts. The Ralph Honner Kokoda Education Centre at the memorial is an exceptional facility offering a multimedia learning experience to more than 4500 school students annually. Virtual reality technology allows them to understand the horrific conditions faced by the young Australian troops as they battled not only the invading enemy but also dense jungle, constant rain, terrifyingly steep terrain, shortages of medical and food supplies, and crippling disease. The personal testimonies recorded by veterans tell that story in stark detail. Another key feature is the Memorial Centrepiece, formed by magnificent granite walls bearing photographic images of the Kokoda campaign, with a water feature in front, and The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway is a unique living memorial which commemorates the desperate WWII campaign fought by Australian forces in Papua New Guinea, and strives to educate younger generations about that sacrifice. it is here that our wreath laying ceremonies take place. Each year we hold commemorative services for ANZAC Day, VP Day (15 August) and Kokoda Day (3 November). Our ANZAC service is held on the Saturday before ANZAC Day, so it does not clash with other commemorative events including Dawn Services. This year we will have a naval theme, reflecting the role of naval vessels in the original Gallipoli Landing in 1915, and in supporting the troops in New Guinea during WWII. In the years following WWI cities, towns and villages throughout Australia erected monuments bearing the names of local men who served and lost their lives. Those were grim, stony reminders of death in wartime. At the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, we have created a very different memorial, alive with the stories of the veterans in audio and video, and alive with lush green foliage. The Walkway is a vibrant hub for community activities. It aims to foster pride in our community and pride in our nation. Above all it ensures that we honour and salute those young men and women who volunteered to fight for Australia at a time when the nation’s very future was at risk. Alice Kang OAM |Director Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway To The POINT By HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Countdown is on for the Gladesville Reserve reopening! Join us this Saturday 20 April to celebrate the significant upgrades to this important community asset. The works included improvements to the ground surface and upgraded lighting to increase the playing capacity at Gladesville Reserve. This means the sportsfield can be used for more hours each week, all year round, as well as providing a higher quality playing surface for players as well as an improved surface for active and passive users of the park. We’ve also installed a new state-of the-art cricket net which I’m sure will also be a hit. The official opening will commence at 10.45am, with a ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling. All Saints Hunters Hill FC will also be holding a Gala Day in conjunction with the reopening. Kicking off at 8am, the Gala Day will include a Hero Shot penalty shoot-out tournament with an inflatable goal for players aged 6 – 14 years old. There will also be delicious food, refreshments and prize giveaways. Registrations are required to enter the tournament and can be made at herosocks.com.au/ pages/hero-shot. I’ll be jumping into the goals on the day so you can try and get one past me (which shouldn’t be too hard). I hope to see you all there. In Hunters Hill, we traditionally hold a commemorative service on the eve of ANZAC Day. This allows local veterans and personnel to attend a service here before marking the occasion on 25 April with their compatriots from the armed services in the Sydney CBD or the nation’s capital, Canberra. The service will be held on Tuesday 23 April, commencing with a short wreath laying service at 6.30pm at the RSL Memorial Hall, 56 Alexandra Street, Hunters Hill. A march will begin at 6.45pm outside the RSL Memorial Hall and culminate at the Hunters Hill Town Hall, 22 Alexandra Street, for the main service at 7pm. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Rubbish decision by the NSW Government Dear Sir, TG Millner fields must be saved! What a rubbish decision from the NSW Government. Sure, housing is required to shelter the booming population, but at what cost? Why allow rare playing fields to be concreted over when more and more people need them. Where does it stop? Are they going to allow Lane Cove National Park, or Terry’s Creek to be filled with apartments, or let’s just build on all open fields in Ryde. Get real, step up and look at the big picture, we need spaces like TG Millner. Premier Minns, come on and fix this problem now, start with giving TG Millner to the people so they can use it, not let it be abused! TOMMY MELRIN Eastwood It was ever thus! Dear Sir, Recently my wife and I attended two fully subscribed concerts, one at the magnificent Willoughby Concourse and one at the unremarkable Cox’s Road Hall (in North Ryde). The comparison could not have been more stark. I worked for three years with Mayor Pat Reilly in the early 2000s amid howls from his detractors that his visionary project would send Willoughby City bankrupt. Willoughby is far from bankrupt and it can boast a world class facility. Ryde City on the other hand, has an embarrassing hole in the ground with councillors blaming each other for the debacle, now proposing to spend millions “to fill in the hole”. This debacle is no accident! In late 1994 as CEO of Macquarie Community College I proposed the purchase of the derelict Carlingford Public School, built in the 1800s then rented by the College with no lease. My recommendation was met with strong criticism from the Board chairman at the time. “How would we pay for the purchase,” he yelled and voted against the proposal. Unperturbed, I approached the general manager of Met West Education and Minister John Aquilina and negotiated the purchase. The property was refurbished and paid for in four years. No thanks to chairman and his mates on the Board who had no problem taking full credit. In 2002, I approached Ryde Mayor Ivan Petch to purchase the derelict Argyle Centre in Top Ryde for the College. He advised there were plans for the Argyle Centre, it was not available. Twenty-two years later it is still derelict! The best Mayor Ivan could offer was the totally derelict ‘The Parsonage’ in Top Ryde destined for demolition. Council had voted to bulldoze The Parsonage because the $2,000,000 to restore it was well beyond Council’s budget. My proposal, accepted by Council was that the College would restore the property at its own expense and Council would pay for the road and landscaping. I project managed the restoration. It was completed in six months at a total cost of $450,000. Former PM John Howard strongly advised that party politics in Local Government is not helpful to good governance. The combative nature is clearly a factor. The late Mayor Mick Lardelli, also of Italian descent, confided years ago that when the councillors were arguing, he locked the doors in the Chamber. It is time that someone impresses on councillors that they are entrusted with ratepayers money and they are responsible. GEORGE PAPALLO OAM JP FAITD Ryde TG Millner can still be saved Dear Sir, The recent decision on the future of TG Millner fields in Marsfield is a most disappointing one. It is also more disappointing to see pointless political blame being thrown around like random darts at a dartboard to see who can score the most points at the expense of their opposition. I as a ratepayer, expect more from our current representatives and put simply, do better! Now is not the time to cast blame, but to unify. TG Millner can still be saved and has not been given a green light for development. We as a community need all sides of politics to work harder than they have before on this matter, put political differences aside (as they have done in the past with TG Millner) and come forward with their best solutions and strategies. We all know why TG Millner needs to be saved and it is what the Ryde Community needs and wants. Bring the best of Ryde together on this, and let’s get TG Millner Saved! For all those who have served, Anzac Day represents the ideals of mateship, courage and sacrifice. Today, there are only a small number of World War II veterans still with us. The Vietnam War finished 49 years ago. We pay tribute also to the brave men and women who have served in recent decades in Afghanistan and Iraq. For younger generations, Anzac Day is a call to express our gratitude and to appreciate all that our nation offers: Freedom. Opportunity. Prosperity. Peace. This inheritance was hard-won, and those who served paid a heavy price. It is up to us to cherish and protect both them and their legacy. That is our debt to those who fought and died – to carry their flame. How do we show our gratitude? By living a spirit of sacrifice: in small things and in big things, even when it hurts. By serving family, community, and the nation. We owe it to the Anzacs to keep building our nation ever upward with the vigour and generosity with which they laid its foundations. I would encourage everyone who can to attend an Anzac Day Service. Lest we forget. TG Millner field owner North Ryde RSL welcomes State Government decision …. while Ryde Mayor vows to fight on CITY OF RYDE’s bid to compulsorily acquire the TG Millner Fields site in Marsfield has suffered a major setback, with the NSW Government denying permission, citing council’s insufficient finances and lack of strategic justification. And while the site’s owner - North Ryde RSL - has welcomed the decision on Friday by NSW Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig, Ryde’s Mayor Trenton Brown has vowed to continue the fight to have the TG Millner fields retained as public space. “The Minister’s decision recognises the fact that Ryde Council has a $224m shortfall in its capital budget and simply does not have the capacity to purchase TG Millner,” North Ryde RSL told The Weekly Times in a statement. “At a time when Ryde Civic Centre is still a hole in the ground, it would be financially irresponsible to purchase privately-owned land at rate payers’ expense. “We hope this decision will re-focus Council on other major projects and deliver a civic centre the Ryde community deserves.” But Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown said he was “shocked and devastated” by the State Government decision on the site, which he said had been the subject of a passionate community campaign to prevent a proposed housing development on the famous sporting fields from going ahead. Wednesday 17 April, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: cityofryde@ryde.nsw.gov.au Your City News MAYOR’S PUBLIC FORUM I’m looking forward to meeting with members of the City of Ryde community on Monday 22 April when I hold my first Mayor’s Public Forum at Council Chambers from 6.00pm. I have introduced this initiative because I want to encourage transparency and community involvement to build communication and trust between the Council and the people it serves. I believe consultation and engagement are the best pathways to achieving genuine solutions. I hope to eventually hold these forums – which will also be attended by senior Council staff – on a monthly basis at venues in each Council ward. For further information, go to: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/MayorsForum ANZAC DAY It will be an honour to preside over my first Anzac Day ceremony as Mayor when the community gathers at Anzac Park, West Ryde, on Thursday 25 April for Council’s commemorative service from 9.00 – 10.00am. The ceremony will be followed by morning tea and a special performance by Northern Sydney Youth Orchestra at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club. Like many people who have personal connections with our brave service men and women, both past and present, Anzac Day has a special meaning for my family. My wife’s grandfather Sir Kenneth Anderson served in the second Australian Imperial Force during World War II as a lieutenant in the 8th Signals Division in Malaya. He was held by the Japanese as a prisoner of war for three years at the notoriously brutal Changi Prison and on the equally merciless Burma Railway. He returned from serving his country in war to serving the people of our great City, being Mayor of the then Ryde Municipal Council from 1949 to 1950 before moving into Federal politics. TG MILLNER FIELDS I was devasted to learn last Friday that the State Government has rejected our application for the compulsory acquisition of this site. There has been a long running bi-partisan commitment from both Liberal and Labor Councillors, including the State and Federal MPs, to preserve this site as open space. I will continue to seek the preservation of this site as open space to work with the State MP, Jordan Lane and the Federal MP, Jerome Laxale to keep this site as open space for future generations. The City of Ryde has provisioned $15 million for the purchase of this site. If the Minister thinks that this is insufficient funding, then he should determine its worth and secure the difference in funding from the State Government. If this Government is focussed on increasing the amount of green space in a growing community, then it needs to step- up and step-in to situations like this that place at risk valuable open space being consumed by property developers. That is why I have asked for the Premier to intervene in this matter and take the issue to the NSW Cabinet for a decision to protect TG Millner Fields. Finally, a message to those Councillors who have backtracked from their public commitments to protecting this important open space. Now is the time to put party allegiances aside, and to stand up for your community and your beliefs. If Ryde can’t rely on politicians and candidates to honour election commitments on issues this important, how can they expect anyone to trust them again in future? 8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 April, 2024 Mayoralty should be free of cynical politics Dear Sir, I was interested to read the article in TWT’s April 3 edition regarding the new Mayor of Ryde. I write to you as a resident of Ryde, not as a local Councillor. What was not mentioned in the article is that the Ryde Liberals have had three Mayors in 2.5 years, none of them completing a full term. It is a particularly cynical political exercise to rush a new Mayor into the top job, six months out from an election – our first popularly elected Mayoral election in many decades. One would have to assume that the new role is part of their marketing campaign for September. The 2021 referendum for popularly-elected Mayor was suggested so these political transactions would not take place – changing of the guard year in and year out in a cronyistic manner. The role of Mayor should not be a position that is handed around as a reward, as a booby prize, and to use as a political tool. It should be an honoured role that respects the institution, not cheapened with cynical political intent. It is with great sadness that the losers here are the residents of Ryde. They have been overlooked for personal political gain and have not received the leadership they deserve. Let’s see what September 2024 brings when the good fold of Ryde can choose their Mayor personally. BERNARD PURCELL Gladesville Let’s redevelop the Glen Street Carpark Dear Sir, The Labor State Government’s decision to reject Ryde Council’s compulsory acquisition of TG Milner was unexpected. What we do know is that the council had earmarked $15 million as a deposit for the TG Milner acquisition, assuming its bid would succeed. Additionally, it allocated $10 million for capital works aimed at extending the lifespan of Glen Street Carpark for another 5-10 years. Now, there is a unique opportunity to benefit West Ward residents. Can we reallocate these funds to initiate the redevelopment of Glen Street Carpark? With a total of $25 million at our disposal, we have a chance to envision the “heart of Eastwood revitalisation.” Redeveloping Glen Street Carpark would allow us to address critical infrastructure needs for West Ward residents, including: - Increasing public parking spaces from 427 to 600, improving access to the shopping district and alleviating traffic congestion. - Enhancing amenities, such as a new community centre and a library of comparable size to West Ryde Library. - Implementing an underground retention tank in the Glen Street Carpark to mitigate flooding from Terry Creek to a one-in-onehundred-year level. - Developing new community open spaces with parks and green areas. - Transforming Eastwood Town Centre into a vibrant community hub. We simply want a clean, thriving, and beautiful Eastwood Town Centre. Let’s hope that Ryde Council can deliver on a decade-old aspiration of West Ward. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) From page 6 “I have asked for the Premier to intervene in this matter and take the issue to the NSW Cabinet for a decision to protect TG Millner Fields,” Mayor Brown said. In a statement issued to The Weekly Times, Mr Hoenig said it was no secret Ryde Council was facing financial challenges, including self-reporting for accessing restricted funds. “There are significant issues with Council’s flagship Ryde Central project, which has frustrated the community and is stalled as an empty hole in the ground,” he said. “Given its current financial situation, the government has real concerns about the Council’s capacity to pay for TG Millner Field. “The Council has not been able to demonstrate a source of funding for the acquisition.” He said he was “not prepared to burden Ryde ratepayers with a massive bill” to pay for Council’s promises in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. Mr Hoenig said that if Council was to come up with the required funds in the future, the application would be reassessed on its merits. Mayor Brown challenged Mr Hoenig’s reasoning. “The City of Ryde has provisioned $15 million for the purchase of this site,” he said. “If the Minister thinks that this is insufficient funding then he should determine its worth and secure the difference in funding from the State Government.” North Ryde RSL said the decision provided “some certainty to the future of both North Ryde RSL and Eastwood Rugby.” It said the Marsfield Common proposal, if approved by the NSW Government, would provide 132 low-rise terrace homes, the dedication of a new 10,000m2 public park on the site and $5 million contribution to affordable housing. This proposal was developed together with partners Eastwood Rugby and Winston Langley and would provide the missing piece for families who cannot or do not wish to live in high rise apartments. Ryde MP Jordan Lane said it wasn’t Ryde Council’s responsibility to fulfill the State Government’s election commitments. “The Government has not upheld its end of the bargain and for Labor’s Minister to now try and shift the blame is precisely the reason why people hate politicians,” he said. “You can’t say one thing to score votes before an election, then do the opposite once elected to power.” __________________________________ SEE ALSO LETTERS TO THE EDITOR FROM TOBIAS LORD AND TOMMY MELRIN - PAGE 4

The move has angered local residents and Ryde MP Jordan Lane, a former student of the school. “There was never any mention before the last State election that the hall would be demolished – in fact, Departmental briefings before the election clearly indicated plans for the hall’s retention” he said. Mr Lane has raised the issue multiple times in NSW Parliament, requesting the hall be retained for community indoor use as part of the school’s transfer to Ryde Council. While the remainder of the land will be converted into a park for outdoor users, it is understood that there are minor maintenance works required for the hall to be fit for purpose, something Mr Lane says the Government should fund. “If this hall is not saved, taxpayers will be forced to spend even more money building a brand new hall elsewhere. We have a chronic shortage of indoor facilities, and it is extremely short sighted to demolish a hall that is not even 20 years old. “Given the population growth in our community, I am calling on the NSW Government not to proceed with the hall’s demolition, and instead fund the maintenance works to prevent the levels of infrastructure falling even further behind new housing growth.” The site is located in Meadowbank, which has seen a major influx of high-density housing, something advocates say is further evidence of the community need for indoor spaces. Ryde Council passed a unanimous resolution in November last year, calling on the Government to reverse its plans for demolition. ☐ Ryde councillors, l to r, Ryde MP Jordan Lane; Sophie Lara-Watson; Shweta Deshpande; and Justin Li. The start of the season was celebrated with the usual ceremony involving local politicians keen to demonstrate their sporting prowess by trying to shoot a ball in the hoop and mostly failing to do so. Guests included the Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale; Ryde MP Jordan Lane; Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown; Ryde councillors Bernard Purcell, Penny Pedersen, Shweta Deshpande and Sophie Lara-Watson. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (Michelle Haywood) Zac Sapsford had looked to have snatched a point for the Wanderers equalizing Fabio Gomes opener in the 5th minute of stoppage time, only for Jaiden Kucharski to hit the Sky Blues winner with the last kick of the game. “Overall, we were the better team. They had a few moments in transition, but other than that, I thought we were in total control,” Sydney FC coach Ufuk Talay said. He said Brazilian striker Fabio could have had a hattrick with the moments his team created and it was disappointing to concede a goal. “But the boys didn’t stop, and it’s great that JK scored a great goal; it’s been a long time coming for him,” he said. “They’re ecstatic and will be buzzing in the changing rooms right now. We just want to keep going until the final whistle, and it definitely worked out well, especially in the derby. “We still want to win our next two games and finish as high as we possibly can. Obviously, results need to go our way for that to happen, but we need to put ourselves in that position.” Sydney FC will next travel West, where they will face off against Macarthur FC and an opportunity to secure a home final will be up for grabs. Exhilarating derby win for Sky Blues Sydney FC have booked their place in this season’s Isuzu UTE A-League Finals after a dramatic last gasp 2-1 defeat of arch-rivals Western Sydney Wanderers in front of a raucous Allianz Stadium crowd. ☐ Players celebrate with Sky Blue fans in ‘The Cove’ after scoring a late winner
16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 17 April, 2024 Our whizz kid Lachlan returns to pulverise Panther Pets Saturday! Lachlan returns after a two week suspension to add fire to the Tigers’ halves with his thrilling line breaks, striding runs and perfectly timed offloads. He can’t wait to get back and said it has been a dream come true to play for the Tigers. “It is a bit crazy, five months ago I was leaving for school every day and my mum was getting my lunchbox in my bag,’’ he said. His form has been so good that he’ll be a target for opposition enforcers - but come after him at your peril - because he has a body guard in our ferocious Papua New Guinea centre Justin Olam. Justin described Lachlan as a physically and mentally strong player and said they had bonded on and off the field. “I do my best to protect him,’’ Justin said. “I don’t want them to bully him because he’s a good kid.’’ While Lachlan gives the Tigers a huge range of strike force options inside their own half, it was the Tigers’ attack metres out from the opposition try line that produced two great tries against the Sinners at Cameltown on Sunday in front of a sell out 17,000 home fans. Our first try came in the 15th minute after a strong run from Tigers Player of the year fullback Jahream Bula set up hooker and captain Api Koroisau to fire a flick pass to prop Stefano Utoikamanu who crashed over to score. It was an attack on the Sinners’ try line just after the hour mark that led to our second try when centre Asu Kepaoa struck the try line like a bolt of lightning The Tigers’ surge towards grand final glory steps up a gear this weekend with whizz kid rookie Lachlan Galvin available for selection against the Panther Pets in Bathurst this Saturday arvo. ☐ Tigers team mates congratulate teenage whizzkid Lachlan Galvin after his man of the match performance against Parramatta Eels at Parramatta stadium before his two weeks suspension and they look forward to his return this Saturday at Carrington Park Bathurst when the Tigers take on the Panther Pets. Ryde Eastwood_Weekly Press Ad_8 April_2024.indd 1 5/04/2024 4:08:26 PM after a perfectly weighted pass from five- e i g h t h Jayden Sullivan. The game started with a minute’s silence in memory of Balmain Tigers legend Keith “Golden Boots” Barnes AM who passed away last week. His funeral is Tuesday April 23 at 11am at Macquarie Park Cemetery. Our sincere sympathy to Keith’s widow Robyn and children and grandchildren. Rest in Peace Barnsie. You will never be forgotten. The best of the best ever. This Saturday we take on the Panther Pets at Carrington Park in Bathurst. We won the corresponding fixture last season by 12 points to eight in a game memorable for a massive thunderstorm and torrential rain. Former coach Tim Sheens attributed the victory to the enthusiasm the players displayed during the long coach trip, past the Blue Mountains and into the Gold Rush country of the Central West. So expect us to go for gold in the gold fields again this weekend against the Pets under supercoach Benji Marshall. SEE YA THERE!
