Father Martin’s Musings On how life awakens One of the men involved in the discovery gathered the grains together and the following day placed them into a container of fertile soil and watered them. In a few days’ time to everyone’s delight the grains of wheat soon flowered. There is an enduring life message here and that there are often several things in life that appear to be asleep yet when the right conditions arise, they can suddenly wake up. In the lives of many people often talents and relationships with people that have not been active suddenly are reignited when unforeseen circumstances arise. This I have seen a few times when someone after much time away can show their skill again as a gifted musician, poet or storyteller. Another side to this truth was when an old parish priest commended a group of his parishioners on their ability in transforming a waste yard into a beautiful garden. One of the workers replied to the priest half seriously; “Father you should have seen the condition of this land when only God was caring for it!” Jesus of Nazareth endorses the above principles in these words; “It’s the seed that falls on rich soil that produces a harvest some a hundredfold some sixty some thirty.” (Matthew Chapter 13, verse 23) Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital Chaplain in Sydney Recently I read where some archaeologists while investigating the contents of an ancient tomb in Egypt where a king was buried many centuries ago by chance discovered some grains of wheat. It tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo - fifty unmarked wooden crates - from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 19 July, 2023 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 12 July, 2023 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 A winter’s day at Carisbrook By Dr Kay Leiper Each month we serve Devonshire teas, coffee and cakes in the outdoor courtyard which makes for a safe environment for those exercising caution regarding Covid. The courtyard is pleasant in the Winter sun and the Devonshire teas are delicious. But I have to say I was happy to see the Winter Solstice on Thursday June 22. From then on sunset occurs later each day and you get the feeling that gardens all over Sydney are getting ready to burst out in Spring colour. I know, it’s only July—of course we have to wait until September—but the volunteers at Carisbrook have been working hard on the courtyard garden to create a year-round display and Spring will be no exception. The Brooks family built the sandstone ‘Carisbrook’ in the early 1880s. The house stands on a ridge which overlooks the Lane Cove River to the east over Burns Bay and also to the west just north of Cunningham’s Reach. The family itself first lived in another wooden house further down, close to the waters of Burns Bay. This house had its own established garden and orchard. Only in the early 1910s did market gardeners from Ryde run delivery services along with local dairies and butchers. For those living around Linley Point and West Lane Cove before then home-produce was a necessity and vegetable gardens were likely cultivated from the earliest time of white occupation. The earliest couple to live on the Brooks’ land was Terrence Byrne and his ‘housekeeper’ Ann Davis, along with a German workman who helped Terence fell trees and ship boatloads of wood to Sydneytown (1827). Historic Carisbrook Historic House in Lane Cove continues to open every third weekend in the month throughout Winter. Their dwelling was referred to as a ‘hut’ and sadly there is no other description of how many rooms or how big this hut was. But be sure that no matter how good or bad Ann Davis was at ‘housekeeping’ and cooking, she would have tended some rudimentary vegetable garden nearby. The general topography of Carisbrook’s grounds did not change until the early 1950s when the McDougall family terraced the land down to Burns Bay and created the garden we see today. The trees are now so big that there is little sunny ground in which to grow a vegetable garden, but flowers and shrubs do well. Readers of The Weekly Times are invited to celebrate Lane Cove’s own historic house museum with a scrumptious Devonshire tea at Carisbrook. If you prefer coffee and cakes are also served while you chill out in Carisbrook’s springtime courtyard. There is no need to book but we are accepting phone bookings on 0418 276 365. Entry to the house is $12 Adults, $30 family, $10 Concession and includes a video and self-guided audio tour or you can book for special guided tours at 11am and 2pm. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill 1st North Ryde Scout celebration on Sunday Dear Sir, The 1st North Ryde Scout Group committee would like to thank our ASL (Assistant Scout Leader) Dennis Small and TWT journalist Greg Turner for the outstanding historical tribute for our Centenary in last week’s The Weekly Times. The committee would also like to thank John Booth for the full page spread and his continuing support of Scouts and Guides in the Moocooboolah District. If anyone has memorabilia in regard to the Group please bring it along to share. NALEENI WHITE ASL, 1st North Ryde Scout Group Thanks for support Dear Sir, As the Group Leader for 1st North Ryde Scouts, I wish on the behalf of the group and myself personality to thank JB and his team from the TWT for publishing our featurette on the 1st North Ryde Scouts’ 100 year Centenary (July 12 edition). We would also like to take this opportunity to thank JB and his team for all their previous support of our group, as well as their ongoing commitment to the scouting movement. Their help and support will always be appreciated. MICHAEL OPREY Group Leader 1st North Ryde Scouts Slower transition to renewables advisable Dear Sir, Our globe trotting Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has just announced that we have just joined the ‘Climate Club’ in Germany. We all recognise that renewables are part of our future energy needs, but we have to transition to them slowly, without sending the country (and all us consumers) broke. The German experiment with closing down their coal power plants too early should be studied by our country, but NOT copied as a fellow ‘Climate Club’ member. German energy users have seen their yearly power bills increase from $2k to $4k as they have replaced their gas fired appliances with electric type boilers. Their main source of gas is from of all places, Russia and they have had to reopen some of their old coal power stations in order to keep the lights on the old fashion way with coal, not with wind farms and solar power. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Party loyalty or integrity? Dear Sir, I wish to pose a question to our political class to ponder: Loyalty to party/ colleagues or the upholding of integrity? ‘It is a privilege and an honour to be in elected office, a rare opportunity to attain life’s ultimate Aristotelian ‘Eudaimonia’ or ‘flourishing’, through doing what is right for the greater good. Granted, the political arena is a man-made snake pit, needing Machiavellian ability to negotiate and navigate, to survive and thrive. Such that we see principles shedded, integrity compromised, out of total loyalty to party and colleagues. As a once proud supporter of ex-premier Gladys Berejiklin, I am shattered by the extent of her abuse of power/ position. Et tu, Gladys?! Even more disheartening is the repeated claims of “always acted with the utmost integrity” - by the perpetrator, her blind supporters including both the Federal and State Liberal leaders. Has this country’s political arena become “a forest of beasts”, where ‘integrity’ is but a meaningless word of self-serving convenience? Almost five years on, I still mourn the passing of Ted Mack - the giant of men - a rare species that is now extinct. Would we ever see the likes of him, ever again? Shereen Khor Eastwood Enter your dog in show Entries for the Hunters Hill Moocooboola Festival Dog Show opened earlier this month. Ryde to name and shame tree killers During the recent council meeting it was revealed the Council received approximately 450 complaints about illegal tree felling in 2022 but did not prosecute any felon. Liberal Clr Sophie Lara-Watson said fines alone are not a sufficient deterrent and gave examples of multi-million dollar developments where duplexes had gone up and trees had come down. “Fines are not a huge deterrent and I don’t think fines are a solution,’’ she said. Councillors voted 11 to one in favour of staff investigating the name and shame option with Independent Clr Roy Maggio’s abstention being recorded against the investigation motion. Councillors also authorised staff to create a list of drains and gutters blocked by dead leaves. Councillor Penny Pedersen said drains and gutters in East Ryde have been blocked for weeks and she has received complaints. “All I’m asking is to do a little bit more to City of Ryde staff will investigate ways to name and shame people who illegally cut down trees and will consider an increase in fines for tree killing. ☐ Will tree killers be named and shamed in Ryde? identify the spots and do some additional cleaning,’’ she said. But Liberal Clr Trenton Brown said the responsibility doesn’t rest with Ryde alone. “Pittwater Road is an interesting example because part of that road is the boundary with our neighbours in Hunters Hill,’’ he said. A report will be presented to councillors at an upcoming meeting.

I presided over two recent ceremonies at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club where we welcomed over 200 citizens from 34 different countries, and I was able to use five of my languages to speak directly to many of them. The ceremonies coincided with NAIDOC Week - which celebrates and recognises the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - and I was joined by cultural educators Eric Brown and Harry Whitting, who conducted the Acknowledgement of Country and gave a wonderful cultural performance. I’d like to send warm best wishes to all of our new citizens. ELDERS CELEBRATED One of the key events in the City of Ryde during NAIDOC Week was the Day for our Elders, celebrated at Helene Park, Meadowbank. I was joined by State Member for Ryde Jordan Lane MP, Clr Penny Pedersen, and Council staff as we acknowledged our First Nation City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM with State Member for Ryde Jordan Lane MP and new citizens at a Citizenship Ceremony. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 19 July, 2023 Local business Mitronics shows why it remains an Australian powerhouse in office technology But for those who know Mitronics and its approach to business - the evening’s success would have come as no surprise. Mitronics director Roger Amir regularly hosts gatherings of business people from across Greater Sydney and his passion for connecting people has seen his company remain at the forefront of the nation’s office technology market. “I really enjoy regularly getting together with clients, prospective clients and anyone who can add value to the challenges faced by Australian businesses,” he told The Macquarie Park Ryde Business Chamber had one of its most successful gatherings earlier this month, hosted by local office technology solutions powerhouse, Mitronics Corporation. ☐ Nearly 150 guests attended the Macquarie Park Ryde Business Chamber (MPRBC) meeting at Mitronics headquarters in Hermitage Road, West Ryde earlier this month; and right, Ryde MP Jordan Lane addresses the meeting. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTOS (A. Stavrinos) ☐ Local and national sporting organisations who have partnered with Mitronics Trucks rat running our streets to avoid costly tolls Tolls identified in the inquiry this week include the Lane Cove Tunnel, WestConnex, NorthConnex and tolls in and around the Sydney CBD. The independent review - commissioned by the state government - also heard evidence of trucks rat running roads to avoid council curfews with Australian Logistics Council CEO Hermione Parsons telling the inquiry its cheaper to use residential roads than pay the tolls. “It’s just too costly,” she said. “To pay $35 for a trip when it’s going to maybe save two minutes means there’s no value, so the increased costs of tolls is forcing freight back to the secondary road network,” she said. Dr Parsons said a Sydney tollway could increase a freight company’s toll bill from $5.5 million to $7 million in one year. “Transport operators are unable to pass on the toll costs to their customers, threatening the viability of the industry,” she said. Most Northern Sydney councils have truck curfews and Dr Parsons said it often forced trucks onto suburban roads during peak hour. “Curfews are such an impediment,” she said. “The trucks are not able to use the [toll] roads because it doesn’t stack up commercially, so they use the back roads.” She recommended ending curfews, introducing dedicated freight lanes on tollways, and offering “time of day” concessions for drivers to use roads during off-peak A Parramatta inquiry into Sydney’s tolling system has found toll trucks are rat running roads in North West Sydney and the Inner West to avoid paying tolls. ☐ Trucks congest Parramatta Road and side streets around Concord to avoid the tollway to Drummoyne. Climbing Mt Everest in daughter’s memory Madison and her twin sister Charlotte Capaldi were born at the Royal Hospital for Women in 2004 but Madison was soon diagnosed with an intestine disease known as Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC). Despite surgery and the best efforts of doctors and nurses she passed away. Joe and his wife Danielle recall Madison’s final hours and hopes her memory will live on in the lives the foundation helps to save. “We were woken in the middle of the night and they (doctors) said her bowel had gone gangrenous,” Danielle said. At 7am Joe and Danielle received a call from the hospital to say Madison had been put on life support. She passed away soon after the family said their final goodbyes. For nearly two decades Joe and Danielle have been raising money through the Royal Hospital for Women Foundation to help premature babies as part of the family charity, The Madison Capaldi Research Fund. Joe walked the Kokoda Trail in 2018 to raise money for a new humidicrib. He and Danielle hope the Mt Everest climb in October will raise donations beyond the $100,000 mark. The Capaldi family also have a healthy nine year old son, Noah. Hundreds arrested in domestic violence blitz Operation Amarok has also seen 22 guns being seized.as police say more than half of the state’s murders are domestic violence related. Around 139 of the people arrested were labelled by police as the “most dangerous domestic violence offenders” while 103 had outstanding warrants for violent offences. NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said domestic violence was a “cowardly offence” that targets vulnerable people. “The statistics are staggering, the statistics are frightening but each of those is a person,” he said. “Domestic violence is a cowardly offence and people that commit domestic and family violence are cowards.” Since Operation Amarok was launched in January, 1,884 people have been arrested. Deputy Commissioner Lanyon said he would be looking to coordinate stronger laws with the state government to elevate domestic violence. He said serious perpetrators needed to be “treated in the same way as organised criminals or terrorist offenders”. Police and Counter-Terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley said she would be taking the advice of police on what more can be done. Five hundred and ninety two people have been arrested and more than 1,000 charges laid in a weekend as NSW police target domestic violence. ☐ One of hundreds of arrests by NSW Police in an operation targeting domestic violence offenders hours. Local residents told The Weekly Times Morrison Road, Herring Road, Quarry Road and Church Street in the City of Ryde have suffered an increase in truck use with breaches of council enforced truck weight restrictions on Morrison Road. In the City of Canada Bay there has been a reported increase in trucks using the Bayswater Street approach to the Gladesville Bridge and on Henley Marine Drive, Drummoyne. Former Australian Competition & Consumer Commission chairman Allan Fels AO told the Inquiry the current increase in cost of living expenses has impacted on truck routes. “Sydney is the most tolled capital city in Australia and possibly the world,” he said. “At a time of high inflation and increased living costs, toll roads are becoming increasingly costly.” The Inquiry also heard from representatives from the NRMA, who said motorists going to Parramatta and other western Sydney areas are using back streets to avoid tolls. “Due to current pricing structures NRMA members in Western Sydney, in particular, are more likely to actively avoid using toll roads than in any other area,” NRMA senior manager Sam Giddings said. The NSW government is introducing a $60-a-week toll cap for private motorists from January 2024. The cap will run for two years at a cost of $147 million. Those motorways are under concession until at least 2035. In the case of WestConnex, the concessions last until 2060. The inquiry has heard from motorways operators, local councils and members of the public. About 300 submissions have been received online, with the final day of public hearings to be held in Penrith on Thursday. The review is expected to be completed in 2024 when Professor Fels and Dr Cousins submit their final report to the government. “The government will sit down with police,” she said. “We will also consult widely with the attorney-general, victim’s support groups, DFV experts and other stakeholders to develop further reforms to tackle this social scourge head-on.” Weekly Times. “This month’s Macquarie Park Ryde Business Chamber meeting in our newly-renovated showroom was another valuable opportunity to connect our local businesses with eachother and with others outside the area.” He said that helping businesses by providing networking opportunities was a great source of satisfaction, as it also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits available to businesses through use of technology. “Businesses today are increasingly concerned with how technology can be used to positively influence a number of areas,” he said. “They include improving profitability with cost reduction strategies; the security and privacy of documents; productivity and efficiency; strategic alignment of business processes; and innovation to both increase revenue and reduce costs.” Mr Amir doesn’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ solution. “I understand that every business is different and that is why I take the time to assess and evaluate each organisation’s unique position,” he said. Mitronics Cor- poration is one of Australia’s largest brand-independent, office technology providers. It’s proudly Australian-owned and has been operating since 1994, with its showroom at 90-94 Hermitage Road, West Ryde. Wednesday 19 July, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 Matildas to kick off World Cup campaign in Sydney Your souvenir FIFA Women’s World Cup draw - pages 8, 9 ☐ Touring NextSense’s soon to be completed innovation centre at Macquarie Park last Wednesday were, l to r, Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale; Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles; NextSense Chief Executive Chris Rehn; NextSense Director of Technology, Operations and Property Hockman Chang and Director of Marketing and Communications Nicole Smith. And, bottom right, Mr Rehn briefs Mr Marles and Mr Laxale on construction progress. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTOS (A. Stavrinos) How we got the nickname ‘Matildas’ Matilda had been the nickname of the giant Kangaroo mascot at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and had never been associated with football. There was also the connotation that Matilda in the iconic song Waltzing Matilda referred to an old bag carried by a swagman. It was not until the late 1990s when SBS television ran a poll to select a nickname that The Matildas struck a popular chord. Former women’s head coach Tom Sermanni recalled the SBS Poll. “We essentially did it just to get some publicity,” he said. “So to raise the profile of the team heading into the World Cup, we thought to run a contest.” The SBS team considered several potential names such as The Galahs, The Sheilas and The Soccerettes. Five names nominated by voters were shortlisted to be broadcast during the On The Ball football show presented by commentator Kyle Patterson. On the eve of the FIFA Women’s World Cup it has been revealed that the Australians’ nickname ‘The Matildas’ was a controversial choice in the late 1990s. ☐ The original Matilda mascot at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. One of the voters was Natallie Kehagias, a teenage player from Oatley, whose nomination — Matildas — was chosen as the winner of the competition. Not all the players liked the nickname. “I thought it could have been worse,” Angela Iannotta, Australia’s first ever World Cup goal-scorer said. “But it’s a name that, after all these years, does suit the women’s football team. “It’s quite interesting how, in Australia, the national teams have got all their nicknames: the Socceroos, the Joeys, the Boomers, the Opals.. they haven’t really got that overseas.. so I think it’s a good idea.” So finally they had a name to build their own mythology around which wasn’t something borrowed from America. It is also a nickname that can also be adopted with pride by all ages of women players and - although the name Matilda is popular in The Netherlands - it is unpopular in Britain because it is associated with the short lived and tyrannical rule of The Empress Matilda who was overthrown in a civil war by Good King Stephen shortly after the Norman Conquest. Let’s hope the name will be long associated with a World Cup Final victory on home soil. EXCITEMENT IS building for Australia and New Zealand’s month-long feast of football with the Matildas to play their first match tomorrow (Thursday) night against Republic of Ireland at a sold-out Stadium Australia in Sydney Olympic Park. But for local football and netball powerhouse, Gladesville Ravens Sporting Club, preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have been at least 12 months in the making. Club management has taken the opportunity to organise a cultural exchange with a Japanese club and stage a successful, inaugural girls-only school holiday football camp last week at the sports regional headquarters, Christie Park. Almost 100 girls from the Ravens and other clubs across Sydney took part in the week of football fun and most of them have tickets to watch the Matildas opening match tomorrow and other World Cup games too. Those without tickets to the sold-out match will have a choice of multiple local venues - with City of Ryde putting on a family-friendly ‘live site’ at Meadowbank Park; Club By Anthony Stavrinos Ryde celebrating ‘Happy Hour’ with Matildas games screened inside the club and on a giant screen in the outdoor space otherwise known as the ‘Tiger’s Den’. Club Eastwood will also screen games; while North Ryde RSL will screen all of the Matildas matches, along with every other match in the tournament. “Ravens have been preparing for this world cup for the last 12 months,” Ravens technical director Women’s NPL, Stephen Bott, told The Weekly Times. “We will be welcoming Yokohama FC Girls Academy from Japan, who will be staying with us for a week during the World Cup, billeting with our families and sharing a World Cup together. “Our first grade girls will be playing a stadium preparation match at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday, which will give them the full world cup game day experience.” He said the club would be running events at Gladesville Sporties and there would be a large Ravens fan base at every Sydney game. “Everyone at the club is visibly excited by what the next 4 weeks will bring to the game in this country,” he said. “Many of the Ravens families will also be volunteering around the various venues.” Acting Prime Minister visits site of NextSense facility with Bennelong MP New centre to drive research and industry partnerships in hearing and vision loss The centre, which has received a $12.5 million Australian Government grant, will work with clients of all ages – from young babies to older Australians. It will house a school and pre- school, and custom therapy spaces to deliver services such as speech pathology, audiology and hearing and vision early intervention services for children. It will also deliver cochlear implant pre- and post-surgery services to children and adults and its academic arm will support further education for teach- ers and therapists working with people who have hearing and vision loss. The centre’s spaces will be available to other organisations in the hearing and vision sectors seeking collaboration opportunities and to educate the next generation of professionals. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles toured the site last Wednesday with Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale. ”It’s a pleasure to visit Next- Sense alongside Jerome today – the work they provide is invaluable and the finished works will provide a new level of support to the local community,’ Acting Prime Minister Marles said. NextSense Chief Executive Chris Rehn said the centre was an investment in the future and would enable the organisation to enhance its services and build new partnerships with government, Macquarie University and other research leaders, industry and the service sector. This would improve outcomes for Australians who were deaf, hard of hearing, blind or had low vision and drive new knowledge that would influence approaches internationally. “Around 3.6 million Australians have hearing loss and some 500,000 have vision loss currently, and these numbers are projected to rise significantly in future,” Mr Rehn said. “The growing number of people benefiting from our services means the new centre for innovation will be much more than just a building. “It will be an opportunity to nurture, trial and share new ideas and connect leading thinkers to build new models of care and service delivery that are always evolving as knowledge cycles in and out of our centre.” Every detail of the inclusive building design has considered a broad range of needs and abilities and is designed to encourage collaboration. Features include: installations that provide perspectives and information on hearing and vision loss, including a cochlear touchtable that allows visitors to learn about how a cochlear implant converts sound; hearing augmentation to deliver high-quality sound directly to hearing aids; and a custom-designed student bell and emer- gency evacuation system with visual and auditory alerts including flashing lights and bells. The facility also has an envi- ronmentally sustainable design, with 368 solar panels, six electric vehicle charging stations and water tanks, shading, ventilation and building materials that minimise energy consumption. Its custom-designed classrooms reduce glare and allow more control over lighting for students with vision loss, while play areas will feature equipment including an accessible carousel and Liberty swing for wheelchair users. “Situated in one of Austra- lia’s leading innovation districts - Macquarie Park - our new centre will be at the heart of a broader ecosystem that will help to build a more inclusive Australia,’ Mr Rehn said. The NextSense centre for innovation - soon to open its doors on the Macquarie University campus - is aiming to drive innovation to improve the lives of people with hearing and vision loss and boost partnerships to drive Australia’s global impact.

Of course this comes with the usual STCA (subject to council approval) caveat. “It’s perfectly positioned with a north facing rear aspect and is located within minutes of Top Ryde City Shopping Centre, cafes and Ryde Public School,” he says. “Opportunities like this don’t last, so call now because this will be sold.” “How do you make money in real estate? Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. Jim Juniper from the Hunters Hill Bowling Club said the final was a close run event between outstanding bowlers. “Played in tricky, windy conditions on a slick green, Tony Beno just pipped Col Paterson to take out the 2023 Major Singles Championship of the Hunters Hill Bowling Club,’’ he said. “After Tony had jumped to an early 10/1 lead, Col came back strongly, forging his way to the front at 16/13. “The two protagonists then went head to head all the way to the finish, with Tony coming home strongly and ultimately winning the prestigious title 25/21 in an exhibition of high quality bowls by both players.” The event was generously sponsored by Hunters Hill member John Stewart’s Attic Group. ☐ Pictured (left to right) Tony and Col with Hunters Hill Bowling Club President, Glen Norris and celebrated local identity, Roy Gledhill , who officiated as the umpire. (image: Pete Kenny/Framing Life Boronia Park) Hunters Hill chop down Forest Club President Luke McCormack said the impressive win was another example of flowing Saturday afternoon rugby as Hunters Hill travelled to Forestville. “For Round 11, to take on old rivals Forest Rugby, the game started with the Hillies well in control scoring two well constructed tries to Tom Dufficy and Liam ‘Bison’ Janson,’’ McCormack said. “The second half started ferociously and a steady stream of penalties from the referee saw a glut of possession to Forest but the Hillies’ line would not be breached.” He said the game was cracked open by some loose Forest passes that were seized upon by flyhalf Sam Ryan. “This broke the back of Forest who were unable to post any points in the second half as Hunters Hill piled on the pain with excellent tries to Lewie Parfitt as well as hooker James Lynch and Prop Andrew ‘Moose’ Newson.” This Saturday is ‘Back to Boronia Day’ when all past players and supporters are welcomed back to Boronia Park. “It will be a top of the table clash against Blue Mountains and this game will potentially determine the minor premiership,’’ he said. Hunters Hill are top of the suburban rugby table after a 44 points to 17 win over Forest Rugby.

THE BOYS FROM OZ STARRING JD SMITH 8PM, SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER TICKETS $39 JD SMITH ICONIC SONGS FROM AUSTRALIA’S MOST ICONIC MALE PERFORMERS SINGS THE BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Jahream shines in dream team The 21 year old Auckland born fullback continued to endear himself to Tigers fans with two tries, two try-saving tackles, 99 run metres and three tackle busts. Jahream’s one of the shining lights for the Tigers this season - and can jump higher than most fullbacks - as well as being fast and slick with the ball in his hands. His defence and willingness to put his body on the line without the ball was his hallmark against the Frights and those two try saving tackles kept the Tigers in a close fought match. For a youngster in his first NRL season, his reading of the opposition play is outstanding and there’s every reason to hope he’ll become one of the Tiger’s greatest ever fullbacks after he just signed a two year contract. Just as crucially, he inspires the players around him with his never-say-die attitude while his willingness to support his mates gives the whole team a surge of confidence. The Daily Screamers are hailing him a match winner but supercoach Tim Sheens doesn’t want to throw the weight of expectation on his young shoulders. “He’s athletic, he plays the position well, he’s only young but a good kid so I don’t expect him to win us the game, I just want him to do his job,’’ Tim told me. Jahream scored his first try on the half hour mark and doubled his tally 22 minutes later when forward Isaiah Papali’i charged through to set him up and set the Tigers set up a big finish. The Tigers inspirational captain Api Koroisau returned after a broken jaw put him out for a few weeks and his bravery was rewarded when pounced on a double blunder from the Frights in the 38th minute. The Tigers are scoring so many tries these days and I’m leaping out of my seat so often that I rarely get an opportunity to look at the Dally M player points tally. So statistics wizards might correct me if I’m wrong but I reckon our goal kicking halfback Brandon Wakeham has the best Successful Shots On Target ratio of any goal kicker in the NRL this season. He certainly converts every try we score and did so again on Friday. Your stats on the back of a postcard, please! Tomorrow night (Thursday) the Tigers go down to The Gong to take on the Sinners in the 7.50pm kick off. Only two points separate these two immortal Sydney clubs so this should be a classic Tiger victory. SEE YA THERE! A masterclass performance from the Tigers’ Jahream Bula was the highlight of Friday night’s clash against the Frights in Newcastle. ☐ Api Koroisau and Jake Simpkin lead a charge. ☐ Try scorer Jahream Bula takes it up to the Frights.
