But the number of Godwits has declined in recent years and the City of Canada Bay wants to know how many are here this year and where they are. “One of the biggest threats to them is being disturbed while foraging along the Parramatta River foreshore, which means they are unable to feed sufficiently and unlikely they will to make the long flight back home,’’ a City of Canada Bay spokesperson said. “If you spot any Godwits along our foreshore, please complete our Godwit Count survey and help us monitor the population of Godwits in our area this summer!” The survey concludes at the end of this month and can be downloaded at www.surveymonkey. com/r/MSDBBW3 ☐ Godwits feeding on the Parramatta River. With a real wag in the tale, The Dog Logs is a poignant and hilarious series of ‘dogologues’ as each canine expresses his dog’s life - from true love, friendship, libido and even death. You’ll be barking mad to miss this enchanting opener to our 2023 Season! Another upcoming play is When Dad married Fury. 70 year-old Dad is worth a cool $100 million. His beneficiaries are his two sons… or, were… until Dad married Fury, an American beauty queen half his age. There is no pre-nup. Just family greed, jealousy and recriminations bob around in a sea of verbal hydrochloric acid in true David Williamson style, but in the end money is not what connects the family, but committed relationships. Pope2Pope is a play that sees Pope Emeritus John XXIX tell Pope Pius XIII: “Your Holiness, when I became pope, almost the first word the Curia taught me was ‘ricatto’. Blackmail.” Think Agatha Christie in the Vatican. God, mammon, faith, ambition, corruption, sex, incense and Gregorian chant. Not to mention extraordinary revelations. And surprising deaths. The cardinals have secrets and the walls have ears. And the audience is a fly on this most eternally concealed of walls! Electrifying intrigue by award-winning Australian playwright, Melvyn Morrow The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race is a play spitting chips over a race for justice and equality ... city-trained doctor, Penny, returns to the rural town where she grew up just in time for the annual potato race. Penny upsets the potato cart when she learns the prize money is $1000 for men and just $200 for women! The play is inspired by real events in the Southern Highlands. Marisa Galiazzo is President of the Hunters Hill Theatre Subscribe to Hunters Hill local community theatre Following a successful 2022 season, Hunters Hill Theatre @ Club Ryde has launched its 2023 program and there is something for everybody. Our outdoor staff strive to maintain our local fields to the highest standards, and as a Council we want to provide accessible facilities that are fit-for-purpose and support regular community use; with interaction between organised sport and more passive recreational activities. Council has continued to actively pursue partnerships and funding to develop these wonderful facilities and accommodate our whole community. I’m pleased to announce that Council has secured $260,000 in NSW Government funding to upgrade sports field lighting at Gladesville Reserve in addition to a $2million grant from the NSW Office of Sport for the reserve’s playing surface improvements. These funds will enable us to deliver a high-quality reserve upgrade to both the field and its lighting, helping to improve the safety of players and spectators on and off the field during night matches, training and other activities. This will also work to bring this community facility to the highest competition standard. Council aims to begin work on this exciting development to Gladesville Reserve in the months to come. Road works ahead In more good news, Council has been awarded more than $500,000 in NSW HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Government funding under the Regional and Local Roads Repair Program to support additional efforts in the repair of potholes and significant road repairs. This additional funding boost will help us maintain and improve our road standard to the benefit of everyday journeys for our community. Council knows that improving the conditions of our roads, particularly following major weather events, was a high priority identified in our last Community Survey, and are working hard to deliver a muchimproved program of road repairs in the coming weeks and months. Clr Zac Miles Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Hunters Hill is fortunate to have a number of well-loved and well-utilised community facilities available to our residents, providing a great base to bring people together around shared passions for competitive sport. Connecting through sports by Marisa Galiazzo Letters to the Editor Dear Sir, I read with interest Phil Jenkyns’ appeal to vote for the Independent candidate, Victoria Davidson. While I agree our political class are acting at all levels of the system with a arrogance historically similar to the French Aristocracy in 1789 and all are grouping us by made up identities the solution isn’t another funded candidate who will, if elected, serve a wealthy benefactor with a large portfolio of renewable energy. The Teals may drape themselves in many causes but their opening shot was the old favourite - ”Climate Change”. Unfortunately that requires the candidate to embrace a theory that defies the three laws of thermodynamics, which requires certain molecules in the air to retain heat in a fluid in which the primary way of moving heat is through convection - that is, movement of the air. It is easily proven. Stand in a cool wind and you cool down. Stand in a hot wind and you heat up. Heat transfers from you to the air or visa versa. In a world where balloons can circle the world in a jet stream moving at hundreds of kilometres per hour, we are expected to believe CO2 and Methane blankets us. So what has this to do with a candidate in a state election? If they can’t determine reality, do yo want them as your representative in parliament where, heaven forbid, they may have to define a woman. PETER COLTHORPE North Ryde Understanding the NSW voting system Dear Sir, I write to thank you for publishing Phil Jenkyn OAM’s article (‘Political Integrity and real representation’ Feb 15, 2023) setting out the case for change in the seat of Lane Cove at the March election. I am intrigued by Mr Jenkyn highlighting the consequences of numbering ONLY one box in the Lower House (as is frequently requested by the major parties), which means the voter has no further say if their candidate is eliminated and not in the final two candidates. I believe voters would love to better understand why your vote will count MORE if you list more preferences by numbering EVERY BOX and I urge TWT to assist voters by focussing on what optional preferential voting means. ELIZABETH ALLEN Lane Cove We need change Dear Sir, I am writing in response to Phil Jenkyn’s column in The Weekly Times last week (February 15). I wholeheartedly agree that integrity is a huge issue at all levels of Government. I also agree that communities need representation by their members of parliament, whether it be on education, climate or any other concern. We need change at the State Election on 25th March. A good independent voice. It is very important if you want change to carefully mark EVERY square by numbering from first to last choice on the Ballot paper. JILL STEPHENSON Hunters Hill TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Dear Sir, Monitoring the Charlie Teo case as a doctor can be challenging due to the complex and unpredictable nature of medicine. Although doctors strive to produce good outcomes and avoid complications, this ideal is often unattainable in reality. Patients naturally hope for positive outcomes and may become upset if complications arise, especially when they have paid a high cost for their medical care. Performing surgery on patients who may not have another chance at life is a weighty responsibility for doctors. Patients who undergo surgery often see it as their last hope for survival and may feel like they have no other option. However, the cost of surgery is expensive. The issue is whether doctors should offer their patients a last chance at life or recommend palliative care instead. E x p e r i m e n t a l techniques are crucial to advancing medicine, but this can only be achieved if patients are aware of the risks involved. While striving for medical advancements, doctors should also be transparent with their patients about the potential outcomes of their treatments. Dr Teo likely informed his patients that there are no guarantees of success, but that he will do his best. The question of whether to give loved ones a last chance at life is a difficult one, and the decision ultimately lies with Solution is not a funded candidate Dr Charlie Teo’s case is challenging and complex the patient and their family. Doctors must be transparent about the risks involved in any medical procedure and do their best to help their patients, even in complex and unpredictable cases like Dr Charlie Teo’s. While it is true that patients may feel like their money and life were wasted if complications arise, it’s important to remember that Dr Teo did not allow their good intentions to go to waste. See you in class, The phoenix rises By Professor John Smolders AM It is wonderful to see some action on the old Civic Centre site at Top Ryde. As it would be easier for me to reflect on the past and focus on the grandiose statements made by politicians of both political spectrums, the sheer cost sustained to date for temporary measures, the reputations ruined, and the blight endured by all over several years. Instead, let’s envisage what may be delivered from information currently at hand. The sheds are on site and hoardings proudly display the sign Nova Civil. For those who are unaware who Nova Civil are, they are below ground contractors specialising in service relocations. These services could include water, sewerage, and stormwater mains as well as potentially, electrical, gas and telecommunications. These relocations are essential before further excavation takes place for the foundations of the building, namely, footings and services. Council’s press release of February 15, 2023 has indicated this work will be completed by the May 30, 2023. So, what may be next? A Development Application is to be lodged indicating yet another design for the proposed centre. And what could we expect to see? In short, a scaled down version of images previously displayed by council. The reason is that the construction industry in general is facing challenges in labour shortages, supply chain issues and rising interest costs. This is evidenced by the sheer number of liquidations of prominent building contractors across the country. At this point I must congratulate the current council and staff and the newly elected Mayor of Ryde in acting. The press release previously mentioned also stated that the ‘Edna Wild Arts Centre’, originally designated as part of the development will be constructed at Macquarie Park. I suspect this will be good news for Tom Forrest of the Urban Task Force, who was critical of the design and at the eleventh hour, lobbied Heritage NSW which, for a short period of time, placed a stop work on the development. So, in short, expect to see a watered down version of a grand scheme previously sold to the constituents of Ryde, a streamlined administration centre but most importantly, there will be no apartments nor interference from developers and the project will be wholly owned by the good burghers of the City of Ryde. He said General Manager Mitchell Murphy had been empowered to pursue the appeal as part of a previous resolution of council to pursue a development application. The Defenders of Figtree Park residents’ group - which is opposed to the trees’ removal - said it had been given ten working days from last Friday to lodge a submission against the appeal and would do so. “We don’t need this, we don’t want it and all we’ve ever asked for at Figtree Park is proper drainage and a safety fence to prevent children from running onto a dangerous road, yet these are the two things the Council hasn’t put in its plan,’’ residents’ group spokesperson David Salter said. Independent Clr Ross Williams told TWT he will speak against the council appeal when it is heard by the Panel. “The Panel was scathing it its opinion the removal of the trees is not in the public interest and Council should accept the independent umpire’s decision and not take this extreme action, this is just desperation,’’ he said. Councillor Williams said a decision to appeal should have been debated at a council meeting where residents could have an opportunity to speak for and against it. He also said the grant money for Figtree Park would be better spent on restoring The Priory, a historic building in Tarban Creek which has sat empty and unused for more than a decade and was ”in desperate need of attention.” “We recently raised our rates by nine to 10 per cent to fund works that urgently need to be done, not to pursue projects people don’t want,” Clr Williams said. Hunter’s Hill Council has appealed against a Local Planning Panel decision to reject a council development proposal to remove around twenty trees from Figtree Park to make way for a new $4.7 million dollar playground and community park. ☐ Hunter’s Hill Council will pursue a development proposal to remove trees at Figtree Park, according to this sign that appeared at the park last week. What’s next for Ryde’s Civic Centre shamozzle? MISINFORMATION, INCOMPETENCE and questionable political motives led to the unnecessary demolition of Ryde’s historic Civic Centre. In late 2021, after the building had been razed, construction of a new Ryde Civic Centre with community spaces and an office complex was set to proceed, with the cost blowing out from $100m to a projected $125m-plus. Those protesting the Civic Centre’s demolition were described as “nostalgic cranks” by then Mayor, Jerome Laxale, who has since been elected the Member for Bennelong. Mr Laxale, at the time, said the prominent building was a “monument to the past” and should have been replaced years ago. “This [building] has been at the forefront of our council for too long,” he said. “I think people will get a shock when they drive over the hill on Devlin Street because it won’t be there any more. “I think those few people who wanted the building to stay will always be sad, and I don’t want to dismiss that feeling, however, our city deserves a new building where memories can be made.” Soon after, contractor Taylors Constructions walked off the job after what appeared to be a commercial disagreement with the City of Ryde. And there’s been radio silence ever since. Until last Wednesday when City of Ryde announced ”The New Heart of Ryde” was a step closer to completion, with Council’s contractor, Nova Civil undertaking site establishment works. At its Council meeting held on 27 September 2022, Council acknowledged the pressures facing the construction industry globally and voted to revise the design to ensure the project could proceed on budget. “The new design still delivers on the promised multi-purpose community facilities, as well as public meeting rooms, Council offices and chamber facilities, and on-site parking,” City of Ryde said in a statement. “The New Heart of Ryde also delivers a larger plaza and more open space, while allowing for the realisation of a previously unaffordable dedicated performing arts space at Macquarie Centre. “Council remains committed to retaining 100 percent ownership of the site and not reducing essential services or increasing rates to fund the project.” City of Ryde Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Rylands, said Council’s decision to revise the design was made after careful consideration of the needs and concerns of the community. “Through effective value management Council has been able to address significant global challenges that are affecting the construction industry and local government,” he said. “This new design will still allow us to meet the key community requirements that have been promised and bring Council staff back to The New Heart of Ryde while we remain economically sustainable, without burdening our ratepayers or having to reduce any of our services, programs or other projects.” City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM voiced his support for the progression of The New Heart of Ryde. “This new phase for The New Heart of Ryde project will ensure the sustainable delivery of much needed community and civic space,” he said. The key deviation from the Laxale-era proposal is the method of funding. Rather than borrow upwards of $65m, which would have resulted in Ryde Council’s largest ever debt, the new administration under former Mayor Jordan Lane refinanced the project, meaning it could be built debt-free. Current Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM reaffirmed his support for the new financial direction. “In a rising interest-rate climate, Ryde Council took the necessary steps to ensure that future ratepayers will not be saddled with record intergenerational debt,” he told The Weekly Times. “This new phase for The New Heart of Ryde project will ensure the sustainable delivery of much-needed community and civic space, minus Labor’s debt.” But Ryde councillor Bernard Purcell said that while he appreciated the need to be fiscally responsible in the current economic climate, he thought the new plan was a missed opportunity. “It’s a missed opportunity to build an auditorium and community facility that the City of Ryde sorely needs,” he said. “The City of Ryde deserves, and needs, a fullyfledged town hall to serve the people of Ryde and to make us proud.” By Anthony Stavrinos
6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 22 February, 2023 Ryde-Epping Greens announce Ryde candidate “Sophie has lived in Ryde for a decade and works in the justice sector,” Ryde-Epping Greens said in a statement announcing its candidate. ”Her son attends a local high school and Sophie is an active member of Eastwood Uniting Church. “As a union delegate with the Public Service Association, Sophie advocates for better working conditions and wages.” Ms Edington said the community of parishioners at Eastwood Uniting Church was one she loved dearly. “They have seen me through some really tough times,” she said. Ms Edington said she was committed to representing her community and fighting for the issues that mattered most to Ryde residents, such as transport. “I remember the days when the express train to the city stopped in Eastwood. Now, under the Liberals, we can’t even get a reliable bus to the city,” she said. “More people have to drive, and traffic is worsening. “The Greens have a plan to overhaul investment in public transport across NSW, putting public transport back into public hands to serve the public interest.” She said the state’s teachers, nurses and many others were struggling with excessive workloads and hours while their pay wasn’t keeping up with the cost of living. “This isn’t sustainable,” Ms Edington said. ”We need to support these people who support us.” Her partner is a high school teacher who is looking to change careers due to burnout. “I know so many brilliant teachers who have left due to poor working conditions,” she said. “We need to take the admin load off our teachers, so they can focus on planning great lessons for our kids.” Ryde-Epping Greens said locals were frustrated with corruption and lack of transparency in decision-making about funding and development grants and reinforced The Greens’ policies to not accept corporate donations and also make donations and spending transparent and accountable. “There’s a lot that needs fixing across Ryde and NSW,” says Sophie. “Our bus services have been cut, our schools and hospitals are overcrowded and underfunded, and we keep seeing our community and infrastructure disregarded with bad planning decisions. ”People have lost faith in politicians who represent their donors not their constituents. We deserve better.” She said she was proud to stand with The Greens for real solutions to protect the community and environment. “The climate crisis is affecting Ryde residents here and now,” she said. “We’re paying more for food, more for health, and more for energy. “The Greens have a comprehensive plan to tackle the climate crisis and reduce the cost of living.” UNION DELEGATE Sophie Edington will represent The Greens in Ryde at next month’s state election. Boronia Park facility under construction The first sod was turned at the site of Boronia Park’s new Sports and Community Facility last week. ☐ Pictured (left to right) at the sod turning event are Gladesville Ravens Sports Club President Cathy Inglis, Ryde Hunters Hill Cricket Club Secretary Greg Chippendale, Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, Ryde Hunters Hill Cricket Club President Ben Woods, Hunter’s Hill Mayor Zac Miles, Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club Vice-President Peter McFarlane, North Sydney MP Kylea Tink, Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club President Glen Sanford, Paynter Dixon Head of Strategic Projects George Kandylas and Pickleball in the Park representative Caroline Hopwood. The event follows the awarding of the construction contract to the Paynter Dixon construction company, which will commence work in April. It was attended by local sporting club representatives from The Gladesville Ravens Football Club, the Hunters Hill Rugby Club, the Ryde Hunters Hill Cricket Club, Pickleball in the Park and local netball enthusiasts alongside Hunter’s Hill Mayor Zac Miles, Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, North Sydney MP Kylea Tink and George Kandylas who is the Head of Strategic Projects at Paynter Dixon. Mayor Miles said the facility would provide a much-needed upgrade to Boronia Park and will be part of Hunter’s Hill’s premier sports ground. “This project will address significant deficiencies in what currently exists at Boronia Park and provide amenities that our community and sporting clubs desperately need and deserve,” he said. The facility is located between Ovals One and Two and will serve as a home for the Hunters Hill Rugby Club during its winter season. It includes accessible toilets, new change rooms and a canteen alongside additional storage for local sporting clubs as well as a community room for use by sporting clubs, local schools and other community groups. Funding for the $5million project is from State Government and Federal Government grants as well as fundraising by the Hunters Hill Rugby Club and a contribution from Ryde Hunters Hill Cricket Club. The Council will contribute $1.735million to the project. Mr Kandylas said Paynter Dixon was committed to partnering the Council and community to deliver the best outcome in a timely fashion. “This project has been on the drawing board for many years, and it’s great to be involved in the final part of this journey,” he said. Australian first $96m RNA facility for Macquarie University Liberal candidate for Ryde, Jordan Lane, welcomed the Perrottet Government’s partnership with Myeloid, alongside one of the country’s leading universities, investing in the State’s capability to develop and manufacture RNA-based therapeutics locally. “Having this facility built in Macquarie Park is a huge coup for our community,” Mr Lane said. ”This manufacturing facility will pioneer ground-breaking research and innovation in RNA therapeutics, including vaccine production, and will create important next-generation local jobs. “It will also help encourage growth of innovation industry locally, being located at Macquarie University’s Wallumattagal campus in close proximity to the Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District that is home to a host of medical and health related organisations and industrial and technology start-ups.” The facility, which will include laboratories and other support spaces, will be the only site in Australia and one of a handful in the world, where a wide range of RNA therapeutics and potential delivery technologies will be independently produced, providing NSW with scalable manufacturing opportunities that will bolster sovereign capability. Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Alister Henskens said Myeloid was selected following a competitive tender process and is an experienced operator with a proven track record in the translation of innovation and managing research facilities. “The cutting-edge work that will be done at this world-leading facility has the potential to save lives by accelerating our biomedical research capabilities and boosting early phase clinical trials to combat disease,” Mr Henskens said. “We have secured a global therapeutics company, co-founded by an Australian researcher, to operate the new facility, which will have strong links into Sydney’s world-renowned innovation ecosystem of research, education and industry experts.” Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said the facility will leverage NSW’s world-class cell and gene therapy expertise, and build on existing investments including the NSW RNA Production & Research Network, the UNSW RNA Institute and Australia’s first Viral Vector Manufacturing Facility at Westmead Health and Innovation District. “Investing in RNA research and manufacturing will ensure NSW remains a world leader in the development of medical technologies and therapeutics, which will ultimately deliver better patient outcomes, particularly for cancer and rare genetic diseases,” Mr Hazzard said. An experienced project team which has worked on a range of health, research and manufacturing projects across NSW has been appointed to progress planning and design for the pilot facility, which is due for completion in 2025. The works are expected to take place until 30 May 2023. At its Council meeting held on 27 September 2022, Council acknowledged the pressures facing the construction industry globally and voted to revise the design to ensure that the project would now be on budget, while still meeting its core aims. The new design still delivers on the promised multi-purpose community facilities, as well as public meeting rooms, Council offices and chamber facilities, and on-site parking. The New Heart of Ryde also delivers a larger plaza and more open space, while allowing for the realisation of a previously unaffordable dedicated performing arts space at Macquarie Centre. Council remains committed to retaining 100 percent ownership of the site and not reducing essential services or increasing rates to fund the project. Works are scheduled to be completed in four stages with full road closure to minimise interfaces of construction activities with the live traffic and pedestrian and improve safety. For the duration of construction works, on-street parking spaces and an existing loading zone within the work zone at Rowe Street and The Avenue will be unavailable. Portable pedestrian lights and temporary pedestrian crossings will be in place to manage pedestrian movements safely. Access to the shops and businesses will be maintained at all times. Local priest Father Greg Morgan was inspired by local parishioners who assisted in Vinnies van outreaches in Eastlakes to push for a St Vincent de Paul van to serve the local area. He even drives one of the vans going out on night patrol. He believes the vans presence “shines the face of God” into people who feel neglected and offers friendship and compassion. Father Greg serves on night patrol The combined parish of St Charles Borromeo in Ryde and Our Lady Queen Of Peace in Gladesville has already raised $70,000 over the last three weeks and hopes readers of The Weekly Times can help meet the $90,000 target. The van aims to operate night and day to distribute sandwiches, coffees, soups, fruit juices and snack packs of food and essential living items across the Ryde and Cumberland council areas and will tour areas of social and economic need identified by the City of Ryde Council. St Charles Borromeo and Our Lady Queen of Peace parish priest Father Greg Morgan told TWT the outreach van will help frail, elderly and a growing number of isolated people, as well as families in crisis. “It is our way to reach out to people who are falling on hard times for many reasons and who can barely afford their rent and basic cost of living,” he said. He said the Vinnies van’s presence “shines the face of God” into the hearts of people that feel neglected in our society and offers friendship and compassion. “It goes beyond providing a meal, a cup of coffee and supplies, the vinnies volunteers connect people with each other which provides them a friend, so they are not alone and they can actually support one another.” Local parish volunteers have previously assisted in van outreaches in Eastlakes, which inspired Father Greg to push for a local St Vincent de Paul van to serve the local area. He even drives one of the vans. “I really believe in it and I love going out on night patrol because it gives me an opportunity to interact with all sorts of people.” Continued Page 3 Ryde-Gladesville Catholic Parish is hoping to raise $90,000 to buy and equip a locally operated St Vincent de Paul outreach van to service local frail and needy people. Dr Lowe has been slammed for suggesting that interest rate hikes are not a big factor in rising costs for renters whose plight was highlighted in a marathon grilling of the RBA boss on Friday before the House Economics Committee in Canberra. “Institutions like the RBA need to ensure that renters are at the forefront of their decision making,” Mr Laxale told The Weekly Times. ”We know that interest rate rises are disproportionately impacting them and I’m hopeful for a change of approach from Governor Lowe.” He said that in successive hearings, the RBA had said it does not do dollar for dollar analysis on the impact of rate rises on renters. “They know that a 25 basis point increase will impact the average mortgage by a specific dollar amount, but they do not know that for renters,” Mr Laxale said. ”In my opinion that needs to change. They need that data to make sure that they’re making the right decisions.” Mr Laxale, a member of the committee, took the opportunity during last Friday’s hearing, to raise the personal accounts of renters being slammed by price hikes of 20 per cent or more. “My real estate agent blanket emailed all tenants … tried to put my rent up $80 a week,” Mr Laxale told the hearing, quoting a constituent. Mr Laxale said the cost of rising interest rates was being passed on by landlords. “Out there in the suburbs, it’s pretty clear that rents are going up because of interest rate rises,” Mr Laxale told the hearing. “But here in this building, we hear the opposite. So which is it?” The RBA boss said both supply and rising interest rates were a factor. “I think we’re both right,” Dr Lowe replied. “And I say that because many landlords I know are saying to the tenants, ‘I am putting your rent up and interest rates are going up,’ so they say that. “But you can only put your rent up if there’s a shortage of rental accommodation, and the tenant can’t go elsewhere. All our work suggests that it’s the vacancy rate that explains most of the movements in rents.” But Dr Lowe was urged to get “better data” on the plight of renters. “I’m concerned and the feedback I’ve got from those in my electorate is that the higher rates are disproportionately smashing renters,” Mr Laxale told the hearing. “And I just … think the RBA needs to better understand the impact of rate rises on renters.” MEMBER FOR Bennelong Jerome Laxale has grilled the Reserve Bank Governor Philip Lowe on behalf of the electorate’s growing cohort of renters. ☐ Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale during last Friday’s House Economics Committee hearing Laxale grills RBA boss over rental hikes

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. Jerome Laxale MP condemns blockade The main route into Artsakh - the Berdzor Corridor - has been blockaded for several weeks by so-called “eco-protestors” which Ryde’s Armenian community allege are paid agents of hostile Azerbaijan, which surrounds Artsakh. Mr Laxale agreed and stressed the blockade had caused a humanitarian crisis. “For nearly two months, Azerbaijani operatives have blocked all movement of people, food, fuel and humanitarian supplies from Armenia to Artsakh,” he said in Parliament. “I am informed over 200 children have been born under siege, that all educational institutions have been shut and grocery stores have been left empty.” Mr Laxale has previously condemned The Armenian Genocide of 1915 where millions of Armenians were murdered by the Ottoman Turks. “This blockade has all the hallmarks of another tragic moment in history for the Armenian people,” Mr Laxale said. Armenian National Committee of Australia Executive Director Michael Kolokossian thanked the Bennelong MP for his condemnation of the blockade. “We are proud to have Mr Jerome Laxale in our corner advocating for issues of importance to the Armenian-Australian community in the Federal Parliament and we thank him for his ongoing efforts in raising awareness during this critical juncture in our nation’s history,” Mr Kolokossian said. Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale MP last week gave a rousing speech in Federal Parliament where he condemned the blockade of the Armenian community in the embattled Republic of Artsakh. Fire engulfs Epping home A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said firefighters were rushed to the villa complex in Kent Street around 2.30pm after a large amount of smoke engulfed the home. “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and immediately began attacking the blaze,’’ the spokesperson said. “They managed to stop the fire from spreading to adjoining villas, extinguishing it in less than an hour.” No one was injured and eight evacuated residents at the villa complex have since returned home. Fire investigators said the Lithium-ion battery was a second hand one and was being recharged by a solar panel system when the blaze broke out. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said never buy a second hand battery. “Had this inferno ignited in the middle of the night we could be talking about fatalities today,” he said. Firefighters saved a row of villas in Epping on Wednesday after one was extensively damaged by a fire caused by a faulty battery. Armenian protestors.
Wednesday 22 February, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 15 See Sarah Grace live at the Epping Club This popular entertainer brings classic favourites to life This special evening performance features jazz, standards and sweet pop hits from legendary artists that include Patsy Cline and The Carpenters. Like these immortal singers and songwriters, Sarah Grace draws her inspiration from deeply moving times of introspection that create music that continues to thrill new generations almost fifty years later. “For so many years I didn’t sing because life’s turbulence can impact a person to the point where the joy gets locked away,’’ Sarah said. “This happened to me and I forgot how to release my pain through song, so I decided to express my feelings through song and, yes, I bounced back.” Sarah also shares a lifelong passion for music which has become the hallmark of the many artists she admires. “There was a saying many decades ago that music and art wouldn’t put food on the table and while that’s often the case, nobody can take away your Sarah Grace and the Big Pitches will perform at the Epping Club from 7pm on Thursday, March 16. ☐ The talented singer Sarah Grace. voice,’’ she said. “Since 2017, I’ve sung at several open mic nights in Sydney and opened up my Social networks as singing has reminded me how vital music is to all of us.” She also shares a lifelong dedication to music with her favourite artists, including gospel music stars. “My musical life started at the young age of five when my parents took the kids to Sunday School and Church and in the 1970s this was the norm, especially singing hymns without musicians in Accapella and choir style,” she said. Her singing career took off at the age of ten when she sang Mary Poppins’ song A spoonful of Sugar in the Grafton Eisteddfod. “I was thrilled as I won that section and it gave me a big boost because I was shy,’’ she recalls. In 1985, Sarah joined a school rock band called the “Alaskan Icemen” and was the Icemen’s only girl. “I was the synth player and lead vocal as we performed for our Schools Specials and even at the local Crown Hotel,’’ she said. Her passion is to support Australia’s live music scene. Luke Brooks is back at school LUKE BROOKS and his Tiger team mates visited schools across TWT Territory last week. The Matildas sink top-rated Spain Beaten 7-0 by Spain in June, the Matildas dominated the first half to lead three-nil at CommBank Stadium with goals from Cortnee Vine, Clare Polk- inghorne and Caitlin Foord. Spain were shocked into ac- tion in the second half and were rewarded with a goal from leftback Olga Carmona in the 73rd minute. A stoppage-time volley from Alba Redondo brought Spain to within one goal of Australia which held on in front of a crowd of 17,333 to celebrate a second successive Cup of Nations win after last Thursday night’s 4-0 demolition of Czechia in Gosford. “I don’t know if the secondhalf was to my liking but it was an exciting game,” Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said. The Matildas seek a winning run in the Cup of Nations ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which starts in July and is being played in Australia. The game against Spain was embroiled in controversy before the kick off with 15 of its best players - and superstar Alexia Putellas - going on strike as part of a protest against the ongoing tenure of coach Jorge Vilda. But is was a sweeping performance by Australia which took the lead after just 11 minutes when winger Hayley Raso laid the ball into the path of fellow attacker Vine, whose first-time strike from just outside the penalty area was too good for Spanish goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez. The Matildas doubled their lead five minutes later through veteran defender Polkinghorne and Foord put the result beyond doubt in the 42nd minute, with the Arsenal attacker taking advantage of some poor Spanish marking to head home a cross from her Gunners’ teammate Steph Catley. Australia’s womens’ national football team - the Matildas - established their World Cup credentials with a 3-2 Cup of Nations win against the highly rated Spain on Sunday night. ☐ The Matildas hope to continue their winning form ahead of this year’s Women’s World Cup. APIA’s nine goals in two games On Sunday APIA travelled to Sydney United to round off a great fortnight with a three to one win thanks to goals by Fabian Monge in the third minute, Jack Armson in the 9th minute and Jack Stewart on the half hour mark. Against Rockdale Linden, Jason Romero scored a hat trick with goals to Jack Armson, Michael Kouta and Adrian Ucchino. APIA coach Franco Parisi is happy with his side’s goal seeking performance in the last two weeks. “We were hungry, we were motivated and I guess the result shows that but three points against Sydney United is what we need to kick into Round 3,” he said. “It’s a lot of what we worked on and, obviously, three points is the final result.” APIA Leichhardt is second from the top of the table, behind Sydney Olympic, with the upcoming Italian Derby at home against Marconi on Sunday, March 5 after next Saturday’s match at home against Mt Druitt. APIA Leichhardt scored an amazing nine goals in two games including a six nil defeat of Rockdale Ilinden at Lambert Park. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 22 February, 2023 ☐ Flying Tiger! Super substitute Aitasi James soars against the Faders on Sunday. By the one eyed Tiger Tigers devastate Faders in try blitz The new look Tigers laid down their credentials as grand final favourites with a masterclass 36 points to four thrashing of The Faders at the Belmore dog pound on Sunday afternoon. After sportingly giving the Faders a four point lead in the opening minutes, Tim Sheens’ Tigers piled on seven tries and 36 unanswered points. Twenty six points were scored in a second half blitz. Former Hush Puppy Brent Naden relished his return to the dog pound and opened the Tigers’ account when he dragged in two defenders before he flicked a brilliant pass to centre Junior Tupou who crossed in the corner on the half hour mark. Five eighth Adam Doueihi then brushed off a head high tackle to send Tommy Talau through a gaping hole in the Faders’ line in the 35th minute and the Tigers led 10 to four at half time. The Tigers pounced again at the start of the second half as flashy half back Brandon Wakeham launched a long-range attacking raid that ended with Asu Kepaoa scoring underneath the posts in the 44th minute. Four minutes later Adam set up backline wizard Charlie Staines to score with his second touch of the ball. By now the Faders resembled a stunned kangaroo caught in the headlights of an outback road train and their poor handling led to easy tries by David Nofoaluma in the 65th minute and Justin Matamua seven minutes later. In the final ten minutes the crowd was on its feet shouting “Tigers! Tigers!” and Tim’s team sent them home delighted with a razzle-dazzle , flamboyant four-pointer that included thirteen passes and ended with an acrobatic dive into the corner from Junior on the 77 minute mark. Man of the Match Adam - who signed a new one year contract on Friday - put in a starring performance finishing with two try assists, several line break assists, massive runs and 296 kick meters. And he can still kick goals! And if Tim’s amazing halves combination of Adam, Brandon and Luke Brooks isn’t enough to frighten our opponents, the Tigers have revealed they have made a $6.7 million offer to bring Mitchell Moses home from the Jellies for five years. The other solid gold news from Sunday is that Marquee recruit lock Isaiah Papali’i got through 60 minutes in the heat wave conditions and hard hitting prop David Klemmer got through a full 50 minutes as super sub Aitasi James rewarded Tim’s confidence in him with a powerful performance. With the preseason now complete, the Tigers will hit the training field with my one eye on our Round One fixture against the Tiddlies at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, March 5 at 6pm.
